Hey everyone,

No, this ISN'T an April Fool's Joke :D

I don't know if y'all know about this, but the 380 (very similar to your Galant 9G) in Australia has ceased production. They have released this final model, a supercharged RalliArt with 230kW (approx 310bhp) and 442Nm of torque as well.

http://themotorreport.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/1.JPG

The article is below, and definitely worth Googling as well for more news.

http://www.themotorreport.com.au/4327/the-motor-report-exclusive-tmr-380-driven/

The article just in case the original article is gone:

With Mitsubishi Motors Australia closing its factory in Adelaide—home of the Magna and more recently the 380—this vehicle comes as something of a pleasant surprise ending to what has been an endearing story of automotive manufacturing in Australia.

Dubbed the TMR supercharged 380, this car will no doubt leave an impression on the car buffs that never turned to Holden or Ford for a car to display proudly in the driveway.

From first look, it’s the TMR brilliant red duco and full TMR body kit that grab you, with its clean lines that look more considered than afterthought. More than anything though, it’s the wheels that really standout. You can’t help but stare a little longer than you’d expect at the large 19” chrome wheels. Sure, they won’t be to everyone’s taste, but they do serve an evil purpose: there simply aren’t too many wheels available that can fit over the truly massive 370mm brakes on the TMR 380.

The brakes themselves are something that wouldn’t be out of place in competitive motorsport, having shot up in size from the standard 294×28mm twin piston brakes, to the dinner-plate-sized 370×32mm hat-mounted two piece construction rotors, with their grooved ‘fish hook’ design and massive 6 piston calipers that could clamp down and stop time itself. Even the rear brakes—consisting of a 4 piston 340×28mm two piece brake—would leave many performance brands lacking in the underpants department when it comes to washing off speed.

This 380 doesn’t just stop: it goes around corners too—mainly thanks to the TMR-tuned front and rear Koni suspension with up rated and lowered front and rear springs. While they still maintain the same design of independent front Macpherson struts with coil springs and rear independent low mount mulit-link upper and lower control arms, the Koni suspension does a much better job of keeping the car firmly planted on the road—and with minimal body roll. The upside is that although the suspension is firm, it’s not unduly firm and the lateral grip limit is quite high. You can feel that time has been spent on making this car handle properly.

The engine has also been massaged to suit the large anchors and upgraded suspension. In keeping with the same engine as the VRX 380 donor car it started life as, it’s got a 3.8 litre 24 valve V6 engine—but with a difference. A Sprintex supercharger is visible—and audible—with the familiar whine that superchargers are so ominous for. The Sprintex supercharger takes the standard 175kW and 343Nm of torque and huffs & puffs it up to 230kW and a whopping 442Nm of torque. The exhaust has also been modified with a ‘straight through’ design that diverts into dual exhaust outlets giving the TMR 380 a nice but gruff note.

Torque is the enemy of most if not all front wheel drive vehicles, and to some extent the TMR suffers just like the rest of them, but it’s not bad. Bad in comparison to a powerful front wheel drive car is a Saab Aero V6 turbo or Mazda’s MPS 3. At no time did I have my arms wrenched from my body with all that torque, but rather a light tickling from the tiller. Added to that, anyone who drives a high power front wheel drive car daily will tell you that you adjust your driving style to suit. While it may be easy to provoke the wheel to tug in your hands, it’s equally as easy to drive in a style that doesn’t make the experience unpleasant. And actual Torque steer? No. Even if you mash the loud pedal into the floor the TMR 380 won’t change lanes without your leave, or spit you off the road.

The handling is pretty good for a car of this size. While you can feel the weight of the car moving around you, the more time you spend behind the wheel, the smaller the car feels to drive. As you start to test the limits of adhesion you realise that if you do come into a corner a touch hot, you simply ‘lift off’ the accelerator and the front wheels dig in and grip, slinging you around the next corner. There is even a hint of lift-off oversteer, and you can provoke the rear to slide out if you’re game.

The engine itself is like many supercharged V6s in that it feels lazy, but when prodded the whine of the supercharger starts to fill the cabin and the TMR 380 picks up its skirts and gets a wriggle on. The supercharger whine is a fantastic soundtrack, but I couldn’t help but think that it could get to be like listening to your three year olds Wiggles CD on any sort of long distance drive. For quick trips around town though, it’s a welcome sound.

Now I wouldn’t say its super quick as my derriere dyno wasn’t telling me I need to replace my Bonds comfy undies, but this car does work right. While the acceleration from standstill isn’t breathtaking, I don’t think that’s what was in the mind of the guys that put this car together. From an 80km/h indicated speed to overtake a slower vehicle, this is where the thing makes sense. A lot of sense. Using the 5 speed sports mode sequential gear shift, tap down two gears and the TMR 380 blasts off. It’s at highway speeds that this car comes into its own: on tap is 442Nm of torque, making overtaking trucks or caravans a simple task. It truly is a Grand Tourer that would be suited to long interstate trips— something the 380 has always been good at, only the TMR 380 does it much, much better.

At $56,990 it’s not cheap, but after thinking about this it may just be a bargain. You see, these are the last of the 380s that have been built, and more than likely the last Mitsubishi we will ever see manufactured in Australia. And with only 20 units available Australia-wide, it may very well become a collector’s item due to its rarity and story told.

As any decent human knows, Australians are a proud lot when it comes to our cars. We’ve all heard the stories of diehard fans paying what can only be described as moon money for old GT Falcons, Toranas, and Monaros. Even lemons like the John Goss Special are worth good coin these days. While it may not be a Falcon or Commodore—nor has it ever tried to be—the Magna and 380 does hold a place in our hearts. And this being the last and greatest 380 ever built, that might just mean something in 30 years time.

Time will only tell if the TMR 380 becomes a collectors piece. You might call me silly, you might call me romantic, but this just might be the rare GT from the stables of Mitsubishi Australia.

Discuss and Enjoy!

Yep, only 20 made and it's been discontinued, with Mitsubishi closing their factory in Australia :(

They made Sigmas (bought the factory from Chrysler during the early 1980's), Magnas (Diamantes) and our 380 (based on the 9G) but couldn't compete against the four other locally manufactured big cars.

Well, Mitsubishi as an Australian operation never had the budget to market the cars... and there's a strong buying psyche of RWD V8s.

As much of a Mitsi fan that I am (that's all I've owned in 13 years), I am a BIG fan of the new FG XR6 Turbo (270kW, 533Nm of torque... 5.2second 0km/h-100km/h time and more power/quicker than its V8 sibling, the XR8 because it is lighter!) that got released very recently here in Oz.

but that means that SC only gives it an extra 50-60 HP which isnt that much that 380 is at 310hp and a stock ralliart is at 256hp that engine in the pic looks more like the GTS engine

krazienluv10
03-03-2009, 03:54 PM
the pic is a non mivic engine...soo base should be around 230hpif it wasnt supercharged. non the less 310 is plenty for practical hp under normal driving, but of course we always want more

Yep in Australia. The kit is available through TMR for $4950 AU$ which at the current exchange rate would be around $3200 US$.

I already have headers, exhaust, CAI, ECU & on top of the kit I've installed 6 larger fuel injectors, a bigger fuel pump & have just picked up a water/methanol setup. There already is a 380 running similar mods to mine doing around 410HP & I believe with the few extras I have I should be around 445HP.

i think u would be lucky to hit 400hp unless its a stage 2 SC even then u would need headers and full exhaust and intake to push close to 450hp

I'm running about 300HP normally aspirated, the kit gives about a 50% increase. I already do have headers. high flow metal cat, dual exhaust, high flow throttle body & aftermarket ECU. The 380 that is doing 410HP here doesn't have CAI or water/methanol injection & is still running the 7th injector. I think 450HP is well in sight.

There are no Ralliarts here just the non mivec 3.8 & yes TMR still do sell the kit. Go to http://www.tmraustralia.com.au/index.php & have a look at the news on the right hand side & you will see it mentioned. You have to contact them for details, Alan Heaphy is the man.

Originally probably spent about $4K AU to get to 300HP & so far on top of the SC kit about $1.5K AU for the injectors, bigger fuel pump, water/Meth injection. I'm doing the install myself so the only other cost will be dyno time to squeeze every last drop of power out of the install 8-)

Since there were only 20 made....I guess I better post my youtube 0-100kmh run.

(that's zero to 62 mph for you US folks)

Of the 20 built mine is serial number #3.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwlutWC59sQ

BTW I have 4 of the 380 machines because my brother was an engineer at the factory.

My latest project is the 380GT version.

It is Supercharged, has the same 19 in wheels and tyres as the TMR...however..

It is fueled by LPG and is supercharged.

Team Mitsubishi ralliart did the work and it is the only one so far.

General Motors have been trying to do a version for three months in a factory down the road, yet TMR got it sorted in a week !

Basically it costs one third the price of petrol to run.

Means i can go hard without worrying about fuel economy..

Will post a few detailed pics if anyone is interested.

Here is my 380GT that has been upgraded to the same supercharger (Sprintex s4-335) as the TMR 380.

This one is a world first for a 380/Galant as it also runs on Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) which in australia is one third the price of petrol.

Performance motoring at a ridiculously cheap cost.

About US$3500 for the supercharger fitted by ralliart.

This runs about 1 second slower in the 0-100 km/h than the TMR380 due to it being on an alternative fuel.

This conversion is basically what Foozrcool in the above posts is doing, with the added complexity of the LPG.

But I just paid the $900 and had TMR fit it professionally with 12 months waranty etc etc.

They did it in 3 days and 3 weeks to get the MAP settings worked out for LPG.

Notice that the suspension strut bar has been modified, that's a trap for young players.

It doesn't clear the supercharger belt unless you reweld it.

I am lucky enough to have a pile of 380 parts on the shelf at home.

I have two windscreens, 6 coil packs, 6 injectors, fuel pump, all rubber and plastic trim on external body areas, 5 spoilers all painted including mounting kit/drill template, a set of wheels/tyres, manifold assembly, center console inc CD/radio, bluetooth phone kit, full 2 din sat/nav kit, clock, MAP and MAF sensors, throttle bodies, ecu... and more.

Got in while the discounts were happening.

If you guys want a spoiler and are serious about any 380/galant parts then I am happy to arrange it for you for cost plus postage.
I can source TMR parts for you as well if you need anything.

Australia is awash with the parts.

Last i heard there were ten thousand rear spoiler/wings in stock....all colour coded in all various colours.

Some of the above pictures are out of date ....

Because I also fitted the same wheels on the GT as the TMR380.

They are Yokohama Advan Sport 225/40ZR19inch-on ROH Flare wheels...(with 46mm Offset)...allow about US$3000 for wheels and tyres..

Virtually impossible to wheel spin with these wheels/tyres.

But the result is astounding for a front wheel drive.

Here is more eye candy from around the globe guys...

I was greedy, I bought 4 cars in total, the other two are company cars for the family business.

I needed two supercharged 380's because I didn't want to wear out the limited release TMR....and prices were less than half for staff in the final days of the factory closure.

Note the huge 4 piston calipers on the TMR380 and the baby calipers on the stock GT380.

With the new wheels you just see everything, almost embarassingly small.

About $3000US for those shiny red calipers and slotted discs....all available from TMR.

wow thanks for the hook up.. last time I had someone in Australia look into the rear visor and spoiler, the visor was $130 AU and the spoiler was $230AU.. i believe those prices were direct from a dealership.. i'd definitely be interested in a spoiler.. my Ralliart is Kalapan Black which I'm pretty sure Mitsubishi has used the same black forever.. shipping to area code 01960?

and i would be interested in some TMR parts as well probably down the road.. i contacted them to see if I could get a rear bumper but never heard back... doable?

Hey guys been over a year since i looked at this thread...a neads up on some projects.

The two of us guys in this thread that have the superchargers fitted also now have custom Limited slip differentials on our 380/9g auto transmissions.

Basically you get the quaife QDH7b ATB differential and have it machined to fit as well as re-splining the driveshaft splines.

The result is no torque steer no matter how hard you floor the pedal and both wheels spin...not just one at a time.

The traction is awesome.

Anyone needing more info just email me...not selling anything...just giving advice.

Also I have a forged 6G75 engine almost ready to go under the bonnet, it's about a week away from delivery to me.

Finally I have another project to update the TMR380 to...wait for it....

ALL WHEEL DRIVE on a 380/9G with supercharged performance.

Yes...the diamante bits almost fit straight on...just a bit of fabrication.

Here are some photos of various stages.....enjoy!

Am currently doing three projects with the 380.

(a) a complete forged 6g75 engine with CR of 8.5, intended 12-15 psi boost...nearly complete
(b) a trial all wheel drive conversion using all wheel drive Magna components....semi complete
(c) Limited Slip differential for the FWD auto...completed and running

Here are a pile of pics in some sort of order as posted on other forums.

Will add when something new develops.

I bought myself a car hoist for the garage at home...sure is useful.

Here's a precat with cover off....gonna cut him up....

The article is below, and definitely worth Googling as well for more news.
