View Full Version : Rotor Direction

Hello,

I installed my new brake rotors over the weekend and I think I may have installed them backwards (passenger on driver and driver on passenger). The second picture on this link, http://www.clubtgc.org/forum/viewtopic.php...t=4721&start=25 ('http://www.clubtgc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4721&start=25'), is that the front passenger rotor or the front driver. I installed this rotor on the front passenger side. I checked out a Porsche Turbo today and it's rotors were different compared to mine (flip-flopped).

Thanks for the info,

L

The second picture is for the driver side.......

Hum,

Well, that sucks. :? That means I have to rotate them. Is it going to be a problem if I have driven the rotors as they currently are for about 25 miles?

Wait a min......u know both those pics are the same right? Which picture two are you talking about?? Are you talking about the fronts or the drums??

Actually all the pics in that link are passenger side.......

I was referencing the post by Strahan, with the two pics of a rotor in a box, then a close up. So I do have them on right? You had said earlier that they are for the driver? Btw, I have the Bradi rotors that are in the picture. (Some rotors are reverse slot).

The slot should slant backward.

This is slant line is the front left. ////////

Well, then this guy has them on wrong like I do http://www.clubtgc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5734 ('http://www.clubtgc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5734'), about 3/4 the page down. Do you think that I can just rotate them and they will be ok ? I've put about 25 miles on them so far.

The reason why I said passenger is because you have know that some companies make them against the direction and some with the direction.......So after seeing its Brembo, they are against the direction......

Is that front left in perspective of the driver looking out the window???

"the slot should slant like this ///////,

That is what it should look like, the slash above is the front left side,
the right should looks the same way as you face the wheels.

Wood"

I don't think so, this is what Wood from Race Concepts just e-mailed me.

You should specific your meaning of "front left"......is that front left looking from the front of the car or sitting in the driver seat...

Liszt

Front left refers to the driver-side front of the car. What I want to know is if I should order new rotors or if I can just rotate them?

I don't think you have to buy new ones.......just swap them around.......But it is always good idea to get new pads, but it is also not absolutely necessary.......If you have the money, by all means change the pads....

Liszt

Awesome, thanks for the info. So why new pads? b/c the surface is now f....ed up from the direction change? Ahhh..... this means more time in the garage, oh well.

thats the way wood told me.....left front meaning drivers side

Hey Mrjaydeeone, would you happen to have a pic of your rotors installed? Preferably a closeup one.....

first of all ur not gonna be hurting really by putting the rotors on backwards. but they do work better the way they are supposed to be.

if u buy new rotors or u resurface rotors, its always a good idea to put on new pads since the old pads are broken in and work best with the old rotors. u'll also get better peformance with the new pads if u change them when installing new rotors or resurfacing them.

Well actually if you put your rotors the opposite direction, your rotors cannot sufficiently cool down thus hindering brake power.....Heat is the ultimate issue with brakes....Once heat kicks in, brake-fade starts......

Thanks for all the info guys. I really appreciate your help. I'm going to pick up a pair of Axis Metal Master pads from raceconcepts then switch the rotors probably over the weekend or on Friday. I read about premature warping and screwing over of the rotors if they are on the wrong direction. Do you think I can wait until Friday to do my work?

L

NRG

yup............rotors wont warp that easily........specially if they are quality brand......

NRG

Actually come to think of it.......Let me do some research to make sure which way is which so you don't go swapping for nothing.......I know different companies make their rotors go different directions.......

pinoyesv6

they should be ok. just don't do things that promote rotor warpiong like wetting hot rotors and things like that.

If you only have 25 miles on your pads, I won't think anything has been "seated" yet and you shouldn't have to spend the $$ for new ones....

this is response from Wood
based on this image
http://www.galants.com/temp/bradi2.jpg
the rotors in the box, that should be the left side, which
is the driver side.

The slott should slant backward. If you face it forward toward the front, it
will catch the wind as you drive and make whriling noise.

Wood

this is Danjs car...his appear to be opposite though...which is right

If anyone knows a 100% on the rotation, please post the info.............

Ok, I found out a little more about how a rotor should be put on. We should NOT determine the correct way to put them on by looking at the slots or drilled marks. Instead, we need to know the internal vanes of the rotor. According to that, we can determine the correct way. But since we don't have a model picture of our Brembo rotors, we can't determine that.

Although the following link is not for Brembo, I have searched around, and concluded that IT IS INDEED determined by the internal vanes not the outter ones.....
