ok, i searched but wasn't able to find the answer i was looking for. for some reason the search function doesn't seem to be working too well for me so hopefully this hasn't been asked. if it has sorry guys. anyway, i'm upgradig to hid obviously and i'm going with a single beam kit. some h4 single beam conversions come with glare shields and some don't. in our cars how important is the glare shield? thanks guys. cheers.

thanks. i've actually been a member of this board for a log time. my old member name was "VIO" but i haven't been on here in a long time. forgot my password and i don't use the old email i signed up with anymore. so i've seen what happens to people who ask question without searching. don't need my ass lit on fire. ;)

i believe that the shield stops the light from spreading out everywhere so that oncoming traffic doesnt get blindsiding.. not sure

From what i know, i believe the glare shield is built in the headlight already, somebody correct me if im wrong. But i have hids 3 temps in the past and they never came with any type of shield or cover on them

any issue with blinding oncoming traffic or anthing out of the ordinary?

nope, never had that issue as long as you dont point the bulbs up or anything. just park at a flat surface and even the beam if you have to. I had 6000K,8000K and currently 4300K. The 4300 is the best light output i had out of all them.

4300k is like pure white no blue hue what so ever. No you dont twist the bulb theirs a metal circle thing u have on your headlight which aims them up/down. Check your owners manual it should be their, since i dont have a pic of it

4300K:

4300k also produces the most Lumens which means you get better projection (even though they aren't projectors, they still shine better in the long run). the glare shield is to reduce glare to oncoming traffic. I have removed the glare shield on one of my single Xenon HID kits and it created tons of glare so i have to mildly solder it back on. Go with 4300k IMO.

The glare shield is part of the headlight assembly, it can be unscrewed and removed (though why you'd want to unless installing projectors) is beyond me. Your headlights without it are basically useless and would have no scatter control, and you'd blind everyone on the road. I have 8000k HIDs, I love them, they perform great. Got them from Miami Redline Motorsports, ThreeOFive8G (a TGC Vendor).

i'm farmilliar with the glare shield that's built into the headlight. the glare shield i'm talking about it one that's built into the h4 adapted hid bulb. it wraps about 1/3 of the way around the bulb. it's part of the h4 base. some kits have the shield and others don't. i would never remove the built in glare shield on the headlight assembly. it's the one that's built into some kit's that i'm wonder about.

so do your bulbs have a built in glare shield or is it just and open exposed bulb?

the color also depends on the brand of the H.I.D. kit. I have 8k's and mine arent nearly as blue as yours, my friends 10k's are the same blue as your 8k's. Another friend of mine has 4300k and his are yellow-ish.

Has anyone found an H.I.D. kit that is D.O.T. or S.A.E approved????? I dont know how the laws on H.I.D.s work in other states but here in Virginia I have to take my kit off and put the stock halogen bulbs back in for inspection.

you wont find any plug and play hid kits that are street legal since they will cause glare and will blind oncoming traffic, they also do not have the right amount of brightness in the rain

Thanks. I noticed that in the rain they dont seem to light everything up like they do any other time. I thought it was just me.

The color temp doesn't vary. What varies is what people consider 8k or 10k. 8000 kelvin is ALWAYS 8000 kelvin. If someone's HID kit is a 'more blue' or a different color, its simply a different kelvin temp.

Instead of starting another thread I'll piggy back on this one.

My question is if I already have HID & wanted to change to bixenon do I have to change both ballasts & bulbs or just bulbs?

i think it would be just the bulb. i think it's the same thing between temps too. correct me if i am wrong.

New bulbs and new ballasts.

that is some really good basic info that i never see posted or discussed anywhere else. i had no idea that on the halogen/hid hi/low setup the halogen bulb was only to pass inspections and wouldn't really work as a highbeam for driving.

in reference to the shield that is built on the actual bulb, yes there is a cut-off shield that is built on the H4 HID bulbs. It is there to reduce the glare because the original shield in the headlamp isn't enough for the HID.

in reference to getting BI-Xenon headlights, you will need to change both the bulbs and more importantly, the ballasts. The ballast set-up you have right now i am assuming that is a single Xenon and only plugs into the low beam inputs and in order to get BI-Xenon you will need to get a ballast that will plug into both HIGH beams and LOW beams

i got my HIDs today, reading the instructions here... seems kinda straightforward, can someone with an 8g go in order on how they did their install?

unplug the harness from the back of the headlight bulb. plug that harness into the female end of the ballast's harness. the other end of the ballast should connect directly to the new bulb. insert new bulb. mount ballast. repeat on the other side. enjoy

what do you mean unless he got the harness?

dwjp90

a relay harness, draws power from the battery instead of the bulb harness.

nycking23
10-15-2008, 09:08 PM
hmm, i actually use a relay for mine because my stock wiring was shit and had shitty grounds, but i dont know of any HID kits that ship with a relay harness, usually i have seen that you need to either make them on your own or buy it separately. but its definitely a plus if you find one that does have it

i read foglights.com and it looks like the 3 bulb bixenon is the best. but it doesnt have an h7 bulb. so the only option for a jdm headlight is a single bulb hid?
