Before I start I would like to thank Trig for supplying my JDM parts (more to come) and Raz_76 for answering a lot of my preliminary questions before I decided to go on this conversion and advices on how things should be done and most specially TGC Tutorials.

Last Saturday was when I started to dismantle my car's front... And trimmed the radiator support and stuff to make the jdm head fit (not perfect yet). Some pics below

However, after fitting the head on the passenger side. I have some issues with the AC lines

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg151/willamette21/JDM/Picture006.jpg

I will try to push the A/C line carefully in to make way for the H7 bulb and socket.

I will also try to push the left head further in to reduced the gap w/ the grille.

I will be able to get more jdm stuff this week.. Hope it comes in before the weekend.. So I can start to cut the crash bar..

Thanks. I just wonder how many of the grille clips you were abe to use?

QnzMostWanted
08-11-2008, 09:36 AM
if u line it up correctly u should be able to get 5 of them to clip, depending on the year of ur car will depend if the 6th (bottom middle) clip will clip in, if not, just cut it off

polishmafia
08-11-2008, 09:36 AM
Umm off the top of my head, I think 4 or 5. All of them were clipped into the headlights.

Galante
08-11-2008, 09:58 AM
I'm only able to use 2 clips and those are the middle ones since I cut the head's grille mounting tabs thin so I can push it further in and I used a longer bolt going to the radiator hole to secure it.

QnzMostWanted
08-11-2008, 10:05 AM
u could have did that and saved the mounting tabs....only other option would be to zip tie it

won't work. just buy new H7 HID capsules (bulbs) that have the same connectors as your (old ballasts) and use your old ballasts.

did u have to cut the edge of the radiator on the passenger side ??? did the headlight hit the condenser bracket ???

Galante
08-14-2008, 09:17 PM
Yes, it has to be cut too so the headlight will fit. It hit the condenser bracket (I trimmed the condenser bracket a bit w/ dremel tool) that's why you have to remove the bolt that holds it and replace it with a longer one, put a hole on the headlight tab so you can secure it on there. It will push in when you tighten it..

Btw, I also trimmed the side of the headlight plastic a bit that have contact to the condenser bracket..

if you remove the two bolts holding the condensor it will give you the wiggle room you need. you can get longer bolts or remove them all together the condensor weights next to nothing.

ok, nobody does this right (only like 1 or 2 other members actually are trying or have done it right... the fogs on the '98+ front end are not quad fogs nor are they fogs and signals. the inside pair=fogs, outside pair=turning floods... they are not signals, parking lights, or fogs. ASTIG and i spoke about this in detail and TRIGGERMAUVE and a bunch of JDM owners have confirmed this over the years. the outside pair are actually aimed at an angle away from the car. what they are supposed to do is light up the road white in the direction of the turn, and stay lit as long as the signal on that side is activated (they should not blink and should never be on at the same time). ASTIG got the wiring to work or was about to last i talked to him about it... he can help you do it correctly (as well as all the other guys w/ the same front end). as for the headlight wiring, look at my tutorial. the correct wiring makes the low beam and hi beam stay on when the hi beam is activated... they should not alternate when going from low to high and back... the high beam should ADD to the low beam and turn off again when the hi beam is deactivated, but the low beams should not go off until the headlights are turned off.

That's what I remember reading before and I told ron the same thing as well. Cuz it is legal to have only quad lights but imagine having quad plus 2 on the fogs plus the flood lights all at once that's way too many lights. But the question is how is it wired to the turn signal without blinking. I have to search for that and see if I can figure it out

ASTIG figured it out w/ some relays and capacitors... yo ASTIG chime in! basically the way it works is the outside turning light turns on then turns off a few seconds after the signal stops blinking, the capacitors store the charge and keep the bulb on for a few seconds so they don't blink.

I wired my fogs the same way, I know what the ouside lights are for. Even if there was a way to make them only come on while turning and then go off, I would still have them as my parking lights because that is the way I want and like them. Just like I know that Vr4 heads in Japan or whatever, all 4 beams should stay on when the brights are on, again, I dont want them that way. I dont understand why you guys try to make it seem that it's the only way and how it should be?

well it's just the way they were intended to be... designed by the mitsu engineers. you can do whatever you want, it's your car... i'm just pointing out the way it was made to be, and how to use them for their intended purpose. if you really want to, you can wire them so that the fogs are the headlights and the high beams are fogs and the low beams are strobes... doesn't matter to me... but the housings and reflectors themselves are made to work a certain way, and to make the conversion "complete", the funtionality should be as was meant from factory on the original example. actually the wiring to do this takes only marginally more effort. but it doesn't hurt me that you have four parking lights at the front of your car, you can have 10 if you like (of course it's your car)... again, i'm just pointing out the way it was meant to be. don't feel bad, 99% of the JDM conversions done are wired "incorrectly", so you're definately not alone. there are however, a few of us that have paid special attention to details through research and application... the results speak for themselves. really, mine isn't even a purist JDM conversion since i have no amber in front until i signal or throw on the hazards (i have clear corners and my corners alternate color from white parking light to amber when i signal). again, any of the bulbs can be wired as horns or squirtguns if that's what somebody wants to do... but they would not be performing as intended, legality aside, since the conversion is essentially illegal in the US as none of the JDM lighting is even DOT compliant.

u hit it on the nose... correct is not always easy (it's almost always harder). personally, i don't bother doing something unless i'm going to do it right. hard work does not bother me, and there's no arguing w/ success. it all depends i guess on your own personal standards of quality...

I had no idea that there was a JDM conversion done incorrectly but ok. I personally don't give a crap how they have it in japan or anywhere else. I also don't care how it's supposed to be. I pay a lot attention to detail, that is why my conversions have come out great, flush headlight etc. This has nothing to do with paying attention to detail but personal taste. There are people that have old style grill with new style bumper and vice verse, why?? you think is because they didn't do their homework or know bettere?? No! it's because it's a personal choice. I build my cars for myself an I care less how they are supposed to be, that is why I don't run around the country showing them off because to some, like myself this is simply just a hobby that doesn't require praising.
I understand what you are saying but just came across like this is how it should be and it's not. Just like people that make their fogs come on with their parking lights, mitsubishi didn't intended for them to be that way but that is why is custom and I personally like to be a litle diffrent and not do everything the same.

u hit it on the nose... correct is not always easy (it's almost always harder). personally, i don't bother doing something unless i'm going to do it right. hard work does not bother me, and there's no arguing w/ success. it all depends i guess on your own personal standards of quality...

SO you are saying that I didn't do my headlight like yours because Im not a hard worker?? So unless I do my car like yours then it's not quality?? That is the dumbest thingI have ever heard dude. Who says that your way is the right way?

slow down buddy, u are taking it wrong. what i am saying is it takes more effort to do it the way it was meant to be; you cannot deny that. that is what i am referring to in attention to detail... just like a car restorer would pay attention to detail and build it the way it was meant to be. i also stated that you can do whatever you want to your car... that is called customizing and we all take part in that. your motivation may be to do it your own way. that is totally fine. but w/o sharing the information on how it was meant to be, how would anybody know? who ever told you you did not work hard or that you are wrong? i think you are reading too much between the lines here; reread my posts, i stated that you can do whatever you want. hell, you could convert the front end to a whole 'nother car if you want... but there would still be a way that the lights were intended to work even on that conversion. our points are not mutually exclusive, right?

Wow. I see some steam coming out of all your heads. Youre both right. Reelax is correct at the fact that if you a true jdm purist, then everything should be done exactly how Mitsu of Japan released their car. Hell Ive seen guys switch out all their windows to JDM made windows, to jdm factory radio, firewall etc... just to keep things to "JDM spec". Raz you know how california is (you lived here), most jdm heads here will judge you if something is out of place. The majority of us just want the Jdm conversion look and customize from there. Both of you guys do great work, theres no doubt about that from all the praise you guys get in this forum. Hell my conversion is mismatched with zenki and kouki parts. It all comes down to the owner of the car. if youre gonna be a jdm purist, then you have to follow the supposed rules, especially when putting your car in show for best jdm mitsu or best overall jdm conversion. you wont win best jdm if the little details are overlooked.

It's good to know how the fogs are meant to be how they are designed to work. Personally I wired them that way because that's how I want them and it appears cool and different. I only would want to pay attention to detail of the front conversion on how they are flushed/aligned but not really on how to wire the lights to work from factory.

Anyhow, you all made your points and I agree w/ them. Now I hope to recieve the rest of the stuff to complete this conversion.

Thanks!

yeah guys... nobody has to justify (to me or anyone) why they do what they do to their cars. in the end we are all just having fun. all i am doing is sharing w/ u guys what i have learned from doing all the research i have done. remember that i was one of the pioneers of the JDM headlight conversion in the US on the 8G (it's hard to say i was first since there might have been somebody off the boards to do it before me... but i was the first on TGC), and nobody here in the US could help me, so i learned from talking to members abroad and getting pictures from them of stock mounting and wiring and how they are supposed to function. i wrote the JDM headlight tutorial to ensure you guys have success w/ the conversion instead of going into it blind and having to go through all the metal cutting/fitting trial and error like i did. in fact the first full front end conversion using the '98+JDM VR-4/Viento parts (like what is in this thread) was completed w/ my assistance via PM's and phone calls (he had to pay over $3000 in parts back then, so consider urselves lucky). it really comes down to personal taste... when i resolved to finally finish my car, i made the decision to go top shelf, JDM, and retire it from daily driver duties; i know this is not an option for everybody, but that's what i wanted to do. i didn't do any of this for recognition, i mean after all is said and done, it's still only a galant and the recognition i could receive is limited to only a small specialized segment of the car population... if i wanted recognition i would have worked on somthing more prestigious or mainstream. but funny you guys mention showing it, as my car has only been entered in 1 "contest" and the result was it won best in show ("best execution" MOD06)... the judges were the senior design staff engineers for Mitsubishi Motors North America, Research and Development (MRDA - the guys who design mitsubishi's concept cars, prototypes, and production models), out of a field of around 1000 mitsubishis ranging from mild to wild. i am NOT better than any of you guys... don't misunderstand. i'm just sharing that this is what i know, and this is what i've done. use the information to make your car what you want it to be!

Change of plans. I went to some paint shops the other day and all quoted me aroung $1200 - $1300 to paint the bumper and skirts. Damn that's a lot of money. I'm only expecting something around $700 - 800. Anyhow, I decided to get me hands dirty and diy the painting of these stuff. No matter how hard it is I know I can do this. I've started doing research on how to prep / sand / polish / paint. I'll be heading on local auto paint shop tomorrow to get supplies and tools..

Thanks to all the positive feedback guys! I just happen to have free time doing this since I'm on vacation until Oct 3. Honestly this is my first time doing this auto painting project. It's kinda scary at first but just believe that you can do it. I started reading online diy auto paint job where I got the basic skills on how to prep/paint etc.. specially the tools.. I can write a tutorial later if that will be able to help you guys to do diy painting like what I did which really save me a fortune from having a shop do the job for me. And if everything will work fine it's very rewarding for myself. In total I have already spent $500 more less for the tools (HVLP spray gun 1.4m tip and 17 gallon compressor) and paint supplies. If you trust your self enough you can do it then you will. :smt082

Edit Again: are you using a urethane base coat? and what type of clear?

As you can see from my sig I need to do some painting
Now to answer questions quoted, I have the base coat mixed from a local paint supply shop. I gave them the color trim of the car which is A68 for my G. The primer I used are on aerosol can (Urethane flexible primer).

The HVLP (High volume low pressure) spray gun was decent it comes with two guns one for primer which has 1.7m tip and other has 1.4m tip for BC and CC. It also comes w/ air regulator. It is decent but on sale for $55 retail was $125. You can get better spray guns than this but this is worth every penny. When you buy a gun get that one that you can remove the fluid needle. Otherwise you'll buy another set if it gets clogged by paint.

BC is urethane and the clear coat is Acrylic Urethane Clearcoat. Activator is needed to be mixed w/ the clearcoat to harden, mix at 4:1 ratio. :smt115

Well guys, sorry to burst your bubble but if your going to do it, do it right. I, myself would not just paint the bumper because you will be able to tell the difference in color shades. What I do and most shops do is paint the front bumper and both fenders. If you just do teh bumper, it will stick out. Just heads up.

What do you guys think is better for my rear, VR4 bumper w/ under spoilers or the Erebuni rear bumper?

09-09-2008, 08:26 PM
Id go with the OEM JDM VR4, unless you plan to put a lip on the front and sideskirts then I would go with the Erebuni.

Car does look nice as is though dude! Great job on the paint! You should hit the radiator core with some black though.

Galante
09-09-2008, 08:38 PM
That's what I was thinking a VR4 rear bumper. I don't have any plans of installing a lip since the front is already low. It already have the oem new style vr4 skirts. I think the erebuni would look better w/ other kind of skirts. I noticed that too I should have painted the rad core black. thanks

Its one of the most ilustrated project ive seen in a while, i also got a 8g, i think its more than decent but your's, your work, and everything that went in on your project, you should have consideration on car of the year, builder of the year at least, if there is one... Anyhow, where could i get that grill you got on, i need a new grill on mines,...

the bottom lip that goes over the muffler is longer so it matches up with the skirts and the underskirts for the rear bumper helps clean it all up to make it flush

Yes you can. Buy couple of space heaters and that should warm up the garage. The paint process and paint will not know the difference. I've painted in my garage while outside temp was 20 degrees. Also, paint the radiator support black and it will look better.
