Ok so I finally decided to create a build thread for my 8g "Ivory"
Woohoo!!! It should have been done long ago but anyways without further adieu......

The Beginning
Early 07 when I took her home...

Holy wheel gap!!!

My first mod in mid 07 were my tinted tails, new muffler, and blacked out emblems

9-26-07 Gtz Spoiler and Tint
Installed a stock gtz spoiler on my car. lol never thought drilling holes in my car could be so scary...
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSC00781Small.jpg

Rolled around like that for a while until I decided I needed something extra on my ride. but not just anything something to make it fierce...I looked around at other types of cars. Evos, Bmw, Nissans.....and I decided I wanted a sport/classic look. The major conversions were the new and old style vr4 conversions but wow that seemed like a pain and I wanted to keep a somewhat stock look so cops and "ricers" will stay off my a$$. I then did my research and found that there was another type of galant that wasnt talked about a lot. The Vrg. Oh boy did I get excited. I then found a picture on Cardomain and saw and 8g-b front end with a vrg lip. I knew immediately this what I wanted to do soooo.......

YAY for another build thread! Great progression, I like your lip fiberglass project, my first project was a vr4 style grill, definitely didn't turn out as good as your lip. Good luck with the five speed swap, and this gives me inspiration to start my own build thread.

looking good bro 1- 5 5 being the hardest what would u rate ur swap

3-4 since I have never done one before and I read like 3 different tutorials. but the slight difficulty would go up to a 5-5.5 if I didnt have the correct tools and lifts....

dam, now im gonna be checkin this thread 20times a day lol. I wish i had a shop to work on my car at. Goodluck bro

yeah its pretty sickk I didnt even think about it until he offered to me to use the shop and I was like DUHHH.... -_- but yeah thanks dude!

sooo.....

The Swap: Day 2

What I think of the fat biotch! HAHA
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0594Small.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0597Small.jpg
So I took off my flexplate and threadlocked the flywheel bolts and was putting on the flywheel and wow it was THE WRONG ONE!!!!! WTH the bastards on ebay I bought from sent the wrong bloody one.....emailed them and was pretty pissed because I was planning to have the car done today....yeah right...but luckily for me my father in law got mad hook up and found me the whole oem clutch kit for $50 bucks and will be here in the morning. My previous clutch kit had a lightened flywheel and a slightly above oem clutch....but err $350 or $50 bucks. Yeah $50 bucks. I will upgrade when I eventually boost her.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0595Small.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0600Small.jpg

So since the whole clutch kit ordeal I cleaned my whole center console and installed the shifter and cables......wow.....the nut on the left (see borrowed pic from goosey's thread) is a BITCH to get out....took forever!

good luck with the rest of it bro!

Ivory8g
09-05-2008, 12:57 AM
Nokcy: Thanks dude, and for some reason I think I wont mind the clutch and traffic and besides it will be WAAAY better on mpg

Fatal: I know right?! I am trying to be as calm as possible and take my time.

Jigz: Thanks bro, man I was so tired of seeing everyone do something sick so I was like ramen noodles here I come...at least my ride will make me happy while eating em :) haha
Wow I dont think I am moving quickly at all but then again.....it is just me....LOL!

Alrighty so

The Swap: Day 3

Started the morning off by going and picking up the $50 clutch kit which the pressure plate and flywheel were in good shape but the whole thing was bolted together so when I got back to the shop I seperated the pieces and took a look at the clutch and that crap was done.....I was like is this a clutch or is it a freakin oversized cracker? I didnt even bother taking a pic of that lol. So I needed a clutch still and father in law again with mad hookup got me a brand new Exedy pressure plate, clutch, and TOB for $147. So I was all set for the day.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0601Small.jpg
So while I was waiting on the exedy stuff I resurfaced the old flywheel ...

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0603Small.jpg
Went and picked up the clutch kit, and installed it right away.
And just in case its not a well known fact...the automatic has a flexplate adapter plate that is the same plate you use for the flywheel. one catch though; the 3g m/t has TWO flywheel adapter plates. One on the crankshaft bushing, so between the bushing and the flywheel. And another plate one the flywheel...and then you put the bolts in. Mind you you have to align all the plates and the flywheel since all the holes will only fit in one direction! That flywheel/flexplate adapter mitsubishi part number is MD754228 for future reference just in case. god bless CAPS. lol

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0604Small.jpg
So after everything was installed I got the tranny and the stand out and proceeded to put er in!!

And Magic happened!
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0605Small.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0609Small.jpg
Ran the clutch line.....connected the shifter cables & the ground back to the tranny

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0608Small.jpg
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0610Small.jpg

Then shorted out 9+10 on the black harness
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0606Small.jpg

And that ended day 3. All that is left to be done is getting putting the gl-4 in the tranny, putting the other two tranny mounts back in, the axles back in, suspension back together, bleed the clutch line, put the battery & intake back in, wheels back on, then record the first start up....and wait for my ecu to throw the code "5 spd hawtness" LOL!

yep. I dont know why everyone bothers jacking up the engine. it barely moved my hand could still fit between the downpipe and my engine. Plus it gives you some extra room and angle when putting the tranny in.

Thanks peeps!! Your enthusiasm keeps me motivated!!!!!!

So short update:
I am pretty sure the master cylinder's seals took a dump because there is no feel in the clutch. so I took off the line along with the reservoir and the fluid came out immediately. But I took out the clutch line out of the master cylinder and there was nothing -_- BAH I'm tired today and just didnt want to be bothered so I will deal with it tomorrow. :( I really wanted to drive it today.....looks like my game is going into overtime fellas :P

P.S. I will have pics up tonight as usual....

Well my father in law were the only ones running the garage today so I barely got anything done. Should have been done today but yeah didnt happen.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0611Small.jpg
Everything is back in....

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0612Small.jpg
Only the axles remain to be put in...and I had to get new boots for them both because they were TORN! wth......
Yea so I ghetto zip tied it until tomorrow so I can put some clamps on them.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0613Small.jpg
and my master cylinder is gone....so tomorrow I am going to test it to make sure. and then replace it if needed, then fire it up!

Wired Up Properly...
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0621Small.jpg
SHE LIVES!!! Sorry I didnt get a first startup vid for you guys but my father in law was in a hurry to go pick up family from the airport. So I was in a pretty big hurry the whole time.

My first test drive was me going home -_- LOL well I am getting a rattle....pretty sure the brake shield is touching the rotor so I have to fix that, but the big problem is that I have no second gear WTF!!!!!! So I went home and checked it out and it is jamming when trying to move the shifter out of first into second. First gear is hella sticky and hard to get in and out of....but when I take off the selector cable It shifts hella smooth. so I thought it was the bushing on the cable because it was sticking up a little....so I fixed it and still no second, so I looked into it the engine bay again and had my fiance try to shift into second and it looks like the selector shifter cable isnt extending enough to put it into second. So I think I need another set of shift linkages. Maybe it was bend somehow? I dunno but it suxorz!!! And I still need to order the harness for the speedo and the reverse gear solenoid since my tranny didnt come with them. Haha not having a reverse gear is a MAJOR BIOTCH!!! Lol Gotta push that ish. Also I took off my lip because it is swelling and cracking from temp changes so I will get that fixed later. But i'm not rolling around like that.

But now for the good......SHIT IS BADASS!!!! I shifted a little too fast and lost traction in 3rd and again in 4th LOL but yeah then I calmed down cause I have a 750mi break in on my exedy clutch -__________- GAWD!

Good job bro! Good to see another 5spd 8G - not many out there.

Try switching the shifter cables inside, and tranny side. 7g has that problem when doing the 5 spd swap

Ivory8g
09-07-2008, 08:53 PM
Yeah Mko I'm ordering the shifter cables from mitsu tomorrow. that has to be the problem because tranny side it goes into all the gears perfectly and without that selector cable it shifts through gears perfectly as well so all in due time :)

why dont you have a reverse gear solenoid? just didnt come with the tranny you got? amd tha harness for the speedo should that be a oem harness out of a 3g?

Ivory8g
09-09-2008, 11:44 PM
YESSSSSS!!!!!!!! FIXED!!!! she drives like a dream now!
ok so after playing around and seeing how my shifter worked I realized that the select cable was not reaching properly therefor moving all my gears around. I then removed the clip holding the cable on the shifter base and moved it up a little.

Going to try and move the silver clip in front of the black clip for the select link....but for now at least its drivable.....walking sux arse! LOL

^ thanks guys!

Ok so its been a while since I updated. been busy and ish! lol

UPDATE TIME!!!

The Aftermath & Little Kinks

Ok so I got shifter base bushings to firm up my shifter feel. installed those without a problem. really a great upgrade. shifts are 100% more confident, a must from where I see it.

I then got ambitious and decided I would get some brass bushings for my shift linkage. they fit perfectly in the linkage.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0693.jpg
I then went to install them and the smaller bushing just would not fit on the select lever properly. like a freaking NUB I forced it and guess what?
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/DSCF0695.jpg
FAAAAAWK!!!! yeah need new shifter cables.......so $110 and 3 days later I had my cables and installed them with my normal rubber shifter link bushings. EFF THAT!! I even got a new select lever right on up and the bushing still doesnt fit. hell if I know. I was thinking about getting the dremel out and trim that ish but oh well I just want to drive her not screw with some crap lol!
So I broke her in after that since she was up and running and now I can drive without being all kinds of super careful.

Winter Project

Ok so the inevitable happened.....

so quick little update, my car was shocking the hell out of me everytime I exited the car and my hid's seemed to get dimmer so my friend suggested this....
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/volt.jpg
and wow my lights are brighter, after about 20 mins after installing this voltage regulator/system I also noticed how much smoother my car ran, and gears shifted. my hid's no longer flicker from what seemed to be a strain on my alternator/battery. also it feels like my car pulls a little better through the gears. did some research on it and found this....
http://my.is/forums/f88/product-review-hyper-voltage-system-282257/
http://forums.evolutionm.net/showthread.php?t=198510&page=2
http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6151
pretty interesting, I will leave this on the car for a while and see what the gas mileage will be like....
I might need to get the hyper grounding system as well to prevent the damn shocking upon exiting my car, it has gotten a little better. the hyper ground and the hyper voltage system work best together from what I am reading.

Soooo....I got them yesterday evening and put them on because I was afraid of the weather that was coming...

yeah dude I love the new look, stock and less of an attention grabber but still aggressive.
I will keep you guys posted on the sun system volt regulator and how it performs.
Sun is the only one I would go with besides the HKS because it is a pretty legit company and they are used on cars that go through crap everyday, just like the track cars the HKS unit is on.

I remember looking into this when I had my S13 and I was told it would be useless to my ride bcz I already had a capacitor installed for my sound system. But it was suggesed to me to replace all the ground wires that attached to the engine block with a larger gauge wire, so i upgraded them to 4 gauge wire and my stereo sounded even better, and seemed my car ran a lil smoother. Matter of fact I need to upgrade my 8Gs ground wires too, since Im still running the capacitor I wont need this Voltage Stablizer still.

Ivory8g
11-30-2008, 09:24 AM
yep I will be going with the Sun hyper ground system as well for my next upgrade. they yield the best results when working together. and plus I want to get rid of that static shock I get when exiting my car completely!

Got the headers off. *good ridance to the gosh forsaken thing one of the 14mm bolts was a nightmare.* crash bar off as well. this was kinda get off all the crap that was slowing me down day. now I can start banging stuff out and putting stuff on and hooking up, should go a lot faster from here on out. I freaking gotta start moving, i dont have all the time in the world to do this. :P

rerouted that ugly ass throttle cable running all around the bay. looks much cleaner and the heat from the tubular wont cook the cable on top of it.

a dumb bitch that I know reversed into my car so bumper paint spiderwebed and cracked. no matter I have a new bumper and lip that I am working on already. sprayed the whole intercooler black and covered the mishimoto and the chipping parts and you really cant tell its boosted now. only indication is sound passed a certain rpm and the gauge pod.

It may get a little easier, there might be some bleeding in the system left so I would try and do that in a couple days again. I am sure that clutch will work nicely though, I was really impressed with the flywheel design. Good choice on that component man

Ivory8g
07-20-2009, 12:09 AM
thanks dude. yeah I was really drooling when I first got that flywheel. spool of the turbo is a little later in the rpm band but the engine revs faster, doesnt work as hard on hills and its easier to rev match. I'll prolly bleed the system out like you suggest again for sure this thurs or so :) cant wait to get the pte turbo in! i just need the adapter for the oil return, 3 inch piping to make an intake and a 3 inch straight coupler

Since you mentioned the 3 letter word...did you get some? haha :tumble:

We have 3" tubing at work. That's what is in my trunk to fab my intake, we can certainly fab one up on a weekend for you. I am tied up this weekend for stuff, but if you want to wait for the following weekend maybe we can get that turbo put on.

It is going to be a heck of a good year for us compared to years before...we have at least 3 trucks running low 11s to mid 10s :icon_razz:

I would say definitely get that turbo and stuff put on and get it in for a tune. I have a very good impression of the power output...especially feeling the difference with that new clutch even on the light accelerations you did that night. That turbo and a tune should make it one agressive machine

Ivory8g
07-26-2009, 01:46 AM
yeah those trucks you showed me are legit! amazing how a 9ton truck can run 9-10 sec 1/4's!

for sure I felt a difference that night too...haha *slowly creeps.....STALL!* haha but yeah the more i drive ivory the more i realize how much of a difference that lighter flywheel makes! As the clutch breaks in the better and faster it shifts! the precision turbo with a dyno tune definitely will put this car in a different league than it is in right now.....gonna be fun once the bottom end gets built!

I couldn't stand to see this machine torn down. When I first became a member of the Galant community I was very interested in this build because Marc lives close (closer lol) to me so I was able to look things over. Secondly, the work gone into this to bring what was essentially a car not "allowed" in the US (lol), was great.

I know we will have our hands full with the project/s ahead with his car and mine, but it will be well worth it.

Figured I would share some photos I had from last weekend installing the turbo with Marc. He will probably kick me in the nuts for this first one, but it was funny as hell. We had trouble fitting the turbo in because parts were hitting the starter shield, then the O2 housing was made kind of poorly that they located the O2 sensor in a way that it hit the power steering pump. We got it all sorted out, and yea I tried getting him to dump the P/s lol...but basically this one is Marc "praying" to Ivory to let it fit right hahaha;
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee207/HD-SPDFRK/Galant/0808091519-00.jpg

On a more serious note, since there is a turbo shop in house where we are working on these cars, we took his compressor housing and compared it to some we have. The housings are slightly different in how they bolt to the cartridge of the turbo assembly, size of the exducer diameter on the compressor wheel, and actual outlet diameter.

From left to right is Marc's new turbo, an Aurora 2000, and an Aurora 3000

I would really like to get Marc to put one of the Aurora 3000 turbos on, but we have a bit of engine playing to do first...heheheh

Figured I would share some photos I had from last weekend installing the turbo with Marc. He will probably kick me in the nuts for this first one, but it was funny as hell. We had trouble fitting the turbo in because parts were hitting the starter shield, then the O2 housing was made kind of poorly that they located the O2 sensor in a way that it hit the power steering pump. We got it all sorted out, and yea I tried getting him to dump the P/s lol...but basically this one is Marc "praying" to Ivory to let it fit right hahaha

awwww should have removed the P/S! it's really not that bad.. even for a small guy like me (only running 215 width tires though)

uh huh well im not going to be running these small tires for long. screw that lol!

hahahahahahahaha...I was just sifting through photos on the phone and found them.

The compressor inlet I think is what you mean...they are 4.5-5", would have to measure for sure but they are meant for some big ass AFE filters. Also the compressor housings are ported which is GREAT for a turbo.

I tried getting him to, hinted at it about 4-5 times maybe...didn't have the heart to grab the tools lol. I am running 245s on my car and its not bad without p/s, and like I told Marc...when your tires are spinning it won't matter LOL

haha its totally an optical illusion from the angle the pic was taken.

but yeah i prolly should have just cowboy'd up and taken the p/s out, but I really didnt want to tamper with ivory much anymore, she's one picky biotch when you start changing too much on her! lol!

yeah I was driving to help Blackheart and pulled in a driveway to turn around and literally it went boom, smelled the burning and excess fuel in exhaust and knew a coil went right off the bat. unclipped the corresponding injectors for that coil and kept going....lol it was interesting. It was the oem one and my car has over 100k on it but still.....it blew up.

I still can't believe the thing ran with the dead coil pack...lol.

I would really like to try and get the direct ignition stuff working on your car. At least you had a spare coil pack at home though

Whats the difference on the EVO Coils? Are they a direct ignition or are they a waste spark system like whats OEM on the Galant model?

Ivory8g
08-17-2009, 08:24 PM
i'm sure they actually are a waste spark system but they have some awesome plasma systems that i know of.

thanks guys! well for now there is some sort of weird problem. car was having some crazy idle problems. thought it was a cracked intake mani. pulled it off with blackheart and put on another from a junk yard and no avail. pulled the codes and had 13 codes! lol wtf! deleted them and need to make some more adjustment and at least i have a steady idle now. Still reading up on the Dohc and building the bottom end. stay tuned

meh sourcing the outlander intake mani around here proves to be more of a pain than its worth and if/when I go DOHC then the outlander mani will be completely pointless and flow less than what I can buy. :P

F4A51 is the 4 speed automatic. In fact, the same one in our V6 Galants.

The F5M51 is the 5 speed manual.

haha heck yeah it will!

Lol and F4a51 is the auto tranny, f5m51 is the v6 5spd, f5m42 is the 4cyl 5spd. shiz gets confusing! I thought it was the 5 spd at first too so I bolted around to the drivers side to see in the car but there was an auto lever in there then i went and checked the tranny and saw that it definitely wasnt a manual tranny. its in a 2001 diamante that was hit from the side and a little in the front but the engine looks perfectly fine in there. the rad support is bent and pushed in but thats all the front damage in the bay there is! Its perfect!

Wish I could justify going out and dumping onto a new engine already, sounds like a perfec donor for the project thats for sure.

damn. that TB is HUGE!!! will you be porting the IM or going outlander mani?

i know right? its stock on the 6g74! it should fit the stock IM just fine seeing as how the butterfly plate wont fully go into the manifold but if i decide to keep the Sohc i will go outlander mani if i decide to go dohc then i will have lots of manifold choices. i might also have an intake manifold built for the sohc. i'm thinking i like the sound of a sohc that can kick ass and take names. dohc has been tried and true but a little over done. there are plenty sohc race cars that put down awesome numbers. way higher that i am looking for too. what do you guys think?
