Centerforce 2G clutch, rest of trans swap parts (cables, pedals, shifter, etc.), rear disc swap, rear sway bar, two-pot front calipers, 16" GS-T chrome wheels, Falken Azenis RT-615, turbo maybe

BTW, all of the work done to my car was done by me except for the water pump and timing belt replacement. Which was done by One6 motorsports in Elk Grove Village in Illinois, only due to I didnt have time to do it myself. Everything else, was my own sweat, blood, and tears.

Yes they are supposed to be that way to be able to adjust camber. Also you know that you can go with 3G parts all the way for your 5spd swap and use the starter you have now, right?

yes, I am aware that if I use all 3G parts I will be able to use my current starter. But my current starter is about 90k old and the act flywheel was 80 and the centerforce clutch is 160 so using and spacing a 2g starter dont seem bad considering how cheap I can get 2G DSM parts.

The grille Chicago_one made me was bowing at the bottom a little bit so I took the mesh off of it to straighten it out but as soon as the mesh was off the bottom straightened out pretty evenly.

Before
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a103/4g63lover/baby%20g/DSCF0018-3.jpg
This afternoon, stripped the paint, no mesh
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a103/4g63lover/baby%20g/DSCF0004-8.jpg
notice how much starighter the grille itself is and how it lines up tih the heads.
At the moment. re-painted and cleared

thanks bro. Couldn't have done it without you making the grille for me. thanks again man.

I am only painting the ding that I filled. If that is successful I will try a couple other dents.

was wondering do any of you know if I can use bondo to hold plastic mesh onto a plastic grille?

One thing I found out about myself today, I'm not cut-out to be a body shop guy. I'm a mechanic and I'm sticking to that. I filled one of the dings in with bondo, it looked good unpainted but in reality after I laid the color down it needed another layer of bondo. there is still a little bit of an indent, but its better than before. Although, you can see some of the scratches from sanding, looks good from far, but its an ugly bitch up close. eh, whatever it will do 'til I can hand her to a pro to get painted.

nope, But I had rims with +48, you have rims with an offset of +38.

anyways, I forgot to update you guys on five-speed news. I got the clutch sitting in my room next to the flywheel a couple or more paychecks and Im going to make a 2hour trip to Peoria to grab a trans from a stratus. hopefully, it will be there when i'm ready for it. I will call that yard tomorrow and see if I can work out a deal.

well for now, I got 2G ACT Streetlite flywheel/centerforce clutch combo.

hoping to receive some misc stuff. soon. =)

IMHO, in your case, get ABS plastic, you're @ such a low ride height, that you'll destroy a CF lip in no time.

Ivory8g
10-27-2008, 11:53 PM
and plus cf would be a pain in the ass to extend

yeah. We'll see when I get another beater.

It would look dope, I'm just curious, because I know CF is not nearly as flexible as ABS, how would you bend it to fit our bumpers? I was planning on making a CF lip of my own at one point, but then realized the amount of damage I would receive driving on Oregon's roads.

4g63lover
10-28-2008, 12:48 AM
Honestly, if I went CF I would have a professional body shop put it on and modify it to fit. Bodywork and paint ain't my thing. I'll do everything under the hood and under the car but I dont trust myself with bodywork.

A little update.

I'm back to hunting for a trans. Too bad I missed out on the 375 deal, but I had to help my parents send money to the P.I. for my grandmas funeral. I'll get my money back once the wire transfer that fell through is reverted back to my dads account. But once again I will start making phone calls and looking for the right trans to get my swap done by march.

I was looking at some pics, and I saw Denvers clutch line set-up and thought it was pretty baller. But we'll see, Denver is sending me an OEM line so we'll see. I also found quite the deal on clutch pedal, master, slave, shifter, cabels, etc. for 325 on club3G but still gotta see if the guy still has it.

Well, figured I'd fill you guys in but its been pretty hard on everyone around here this past week and the car was pretty much the last thing on my mind.

Also, I'm pretty sure the auto just lost overdrive cuz its fucking loud when cruising on the highway and the trans is hesitating to shift once passed 65 mph on the higway. and the check engine light is on... woot.

needs a wetsand, some clear, polish, and possibly a buff.

5-speed news: I should get the clutch/brake pedal and the shifter by the end of this coming week or beginning of the next. I also have a bag of bolts for the shifter.

so the parts list right now:

2G ACT flywheel
2G Centerforce clutch
3G brake pedal (in transit)
3G clutch pedal (in transit)
3G shifter (in transit)
bag o' bolts lol

so if I understand correctly I need
trans, TOB, shifter cables, master cylinder, slave cylinder, misc. wiring, washers, u-clip, and starter.

if I'm missing anything please chime in.

the brake pedal took me about 10 minutes once I got the seat out of the way, and the clutch pedal took about an hour. Woulda taken less than 30 mins if I could find the right bolts for the master.

Did someone look into the 98-02 Mirage and 03 Lancer transmissions. They have the same engine orientation, but just smaller engines 1.8L and 2.0L. Some Lancers are O.Z edition and they came with the 2.4L, I think

4g63lover

I believe the Mirage transmissions have different bellhousings than the 4G64/63 bellhousings.

cuz on the Mirage forums when they swap the 4G93 for the 4G64 they always have to replace the trans with either a 8G/3G automatic or a 3G manual.

I got the shifter cables today.

So all I have left to get besides the actual trans lol is flywheel bolts, clutch fluid reservoir, lines and fittings, and 2G starter.

4g63lover
04-27-2009, 12:36 AM
I'm going to go hunt for a trans at the local pick-n-pull on the 13th.

If the flywheel is not too bad and can still be resurfaced, I might ditch the 2G flywheel and go with the 3G one. that way I wont need a new starter or flywheel bolts.

yup its 5-speed or bust for me this season. lol

the 2G clutch still work with the 3G flywheel, so I'm still going to be using the 2G Centerforce clutch.

Yeah but you will have to get a new starter. Like $35 tho not too bad.

4g63lover
04-27-2009, 05:35 PM
nah, you only have to replace the starter if you use a 2G flywheel, but if you retain the 3G flywheel and use the 2G clutch you wont have to.

Denver had that set-up on his black I4.

slight setback:

I wetsanded the orange peel and as I was laying the next coat of clear, I didn't relize the temperature was under 60*.

its now back to a smooth wetsanded surface. we're supposed to have 60+ weather tomorrow so I will lay another couple coats of color and a couple coats of clear depending on humidity.

What I got done today.

I'm kind of disappointed in how it came out. As I was laying the clear down, a gust of wind blew into the 12" gap between my garage door and the ground and blew dust onto the surface. Didn't realize it until it was all dry.

Another thing, the bondo looked and felt smooth before laying the paint down. The same when it came to the flat color coat and while wetsanding but once the clear dried there is some mildly noticeable imperfections.

Last but not least, there is slight color mismatch. Once again, was not apparent until the clear was dry.

Tomorrow's agenda is another crack at clear wetsanding and polishing/buffing.

I guess it'll do until I get her painted for a color change.

Although, I will put it out there that this is the first time I've ever done any major body work. So I guess its not bad, I'll take it as a learning experience and keep practicing on smaller things. Also thinking about taking a body shop course during this coming fall.

You can use the Mirage transmission, the 7 bolt non turbo 4G63 from a 1G DSM is the same size as the Mirage Flywheel. That flywheel is hard as hell to find, took me 2 months to find one. Came from the 92.5-94 4G63 Eclispe/Talon.

but the orientation of the 7-bolt non turbo 4G63 is totally different from the 7-bolt 4G64 for the 8G's. Might fit the 7G's though if I understand correctly.

Orientation does not matter, I thought that to but the swap has been done in a Mirage. Using the Mirage transmission will put the starter behind the engine like the 7G, but thats a good thing in my opinion.

Thanks man. I'm still contemplating tints cuz of IL's bullshit $250 fines for having front tints. I don't want to have incomplete tints. Maybe I'll say fuck it when I get my license back. About the clear part on the tails, I just like the fact that people wont notice right away that they are JDM's until I turn them on that's all. Most people think the signals will blink like stock tails until I turn the signals on. The same with the brake lights. Just something I think personally is cool.

As for the wheels, I'm going to attempt a low offset set-up.

So I know you all are wondering, "wait, I thought Jigz would be swapped by now?" Well, here's my parts list.
Clutch/brake pedals - installed
Clutch Master Cylinder - installed
Shifter Cables - Check
Shifter - Check
Clutch - 2G Centerforce/ACT 2100 - Check
Flywheel - 2G ACT Streetlite
Clutch Slave Cylinder - Check
OEM Mitsu Throw out bearing - Check

All I have left are lines/fittings, flywheel/clutch bolts, 2G starter, trans mount and the trans itself. Two things are stopping me from it, Money (All my friends are home from school I'm having trouble keeping my money in my pocket. I'm going out too much. I also have a girlfriend that I spoil very much. lol ), and the motivation to go transmission hunting. I'll end up having it shipped from somewhere when I can finally afford it. where'd u get that grill?

My boy Jon (CHICAGO_ONE) made it for me.

reppin hard! it will be worth the blood sweat and tears!

OH YEAH!! Im really effin excited. lol

Tear down officially ended today.
-I got the auto cables out and got the manual cables in (What a bitch that was).
-Got the whole trans out of the car. Went pretty smoothly. My buddy Tim thought I died under the car when it dropped. That auto did NOT want to part with the motor.
-Put the dash and console back together. no way I'm keeping it taken apart longer than I need to.
-Got the flexplate out
-Transferred all of the roller brackets on the manual as well as the studs for the mount.

Some issues I ran into

-The shifter cable plate bolts were a bitch to remove. Just take your time and be patient. I ended up using the swivel ratcheting wrench. Once I got my hands in the little space and got the wrench on the bolt just take your time and it'll come off. My hands hurt after but I got it out.
-Installing them is also almost as big of a PITA if you are doing it alone. I had my buddy line the cable out from the engine bay (once the trans was out) so I can put the right side bolt in. I put the left side bolt in from the opposite side just so the plate isnt sitting floppy
-The bellhousing bolts are 14mm. I used a 15mm the whole time until I got to one of the bolts in the bay and the 14mm worked better since I couldnt get the 3/8" ratchet in there and had to use the 1/4"
-With the flexplate and flywheel, when I was doing my research, 4G63mighty max said he re-used his flexplate botls for the flywheel but when I took the flexplate off, the bolts were in no way being able to be used on the flywheel. Maybe it's cuz I have an 02 motor but I now need the flywheel bolts for the 5-speed. I'll order it at the dealer since thats my only option. I also need bolts for the pressure plate.

Here is the issue with the bolts

Front of flywheel
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a103/4g63lover/baby%20g/IMG_0423.jpg
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a103/4g63lover/baby%20g/IMG_0422.jpg
back of flywheel.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a103/4g63lover/baby%20g/IMG_0424.jpg
Now, you can see once the two adapters are installed, there is no way those bolts are
going to work for the flywheel

So I need the flywheel bolts and (dont hate) but I managed to forget I needed the mount for the manual. lol. So I should get paid tomorrow and order the mount from rockauto and order the bolts from the dealer. I am now just waiting on the select lever from Stewi and I should be able to put the manual in, hook up the lines and cables, put the axles and the suspension back together, and fill her up with gearlube, some DOT3 brake fluid, bleed the clutch system and adjust the pedal.

We went to a hardware store I believe, otherwise pulled them from the bolts bin here at the shop. I had to use a grinder on the end of the bolt because they were about 1/8" too long. I dont know off my head what the size/pitch was. We just took on of the stock bolts to the store and had them matched up with just a difference in length.

Just so that this is noted, the dealers listing for "Flywheel bolts" for the 3G is the same size and length as the flexplate bolts. Good thing I didnt pay for them.

Anyways, was ATTEMPTING to put the trans in today but no dice. I ended up getting some M12 x 1.25 bolts from NAPA for the flywheel and one of the threads on one of the bolts stripped so I need to get another new bolt but NAPA was closed by te time I started to work on the car. So I'm going tomorrow morning to get more bolts.

I do have one concern though, with the longer bolts, once the two flywheel washers and the flywheel is on, the bolt only protrudes about a little over an 1/8th of an inch out the back, will this work or do I DEFINITELY need new bolts?

SPD_FRK
11-20-2009, 08:55 AM
When we did Marc's clutch I think we had about 1/4-3/8" actually threading into the crank. Having 1/8" only threaded in may work, but it is very risk that it could twist the bolts right out of the crank and as a result stripping the bolt threads and threading in the holes too.

Atleast we know the OEM flywheel and flexplate bolts are identical now, the aftermarket flywheels are probably much thicker than OEM.

Meh 1/8 of a inch is NOT GOING TO WORK DONT TRY IT. When threading a bolt that has to sustain any type of force it is a must to have at least 1 and a 1/2 times the diameter of the bolt threaded into the hole.

Jigz just have them order you a set for a dsm 7 bolt they are like 3 bux a piece and the thread and length will work for you.

off the top of my head it looks like you need a TOB and the TOB return clip.

if you have an OEM 3G Eclipse flywheel (Has to be from mitsubishi) you're going to need a second flywheel washer. if you have an aftermarket flywheel (2G, aftermarket 3G, or REMAN 3g) you are going to need longer bolts. I used the 2G flywheel bolts and threw the two washers out.

Ooo those will have you working fazzzzt. I can't seem to find any V6's to use as a project I might just end up doing this and start looking for parts little by little and do it sometime nxt yr. Good job on finally getting her where she needs to be. You planning on going turbo anytime soon?

Dayum. lol But you'll afford that once you put that knowledge to good use. I plan on taking something similar to UTI at my CC since I've lost motivation in my current career choice due to the lack of opportunity. Good luck bro.

Yeah, it'll all be worth it. I'll most likely turbo the SOHC 'til it dies after school then ones it dies, swap a 2.0L 4G63 in it.

I have a question, the reverse light wiring is pins from the small black harness not the big black harness right?

if it is on the small harness, can you direct me as to which color wires I have to de-pin?

Took this from the GT 5sp Swap Article (http://www.galanttuners.com/kb.php?a=18) (im still editing the article lol, but it has some information and shows this photo);

SHORT OUT PIN 9+10 ON THE BLACK HARNESS TO START THE CAR.
CONNECT PIN 7+8 ON THE BLACK HARNESS TO REVERSE LIGHTS SELENOID

I've seen that, but that only shows the wiring for the ignition, it doesnt show anything for the revers solenoid.

I've seen that also, but thats the thing I dont want to pay the dealer 45 bucks for a reservoir. My local dealer is a rip off.

Gotta get/make a reservoir and wire it up then bleed and adjust the clutch then it's drive time!

I think I got a different Master. I have the same Master as Denver's and those reservoirs dont fit on top of them. And my dealer is being a fucking rip off. I buy enough stuff from them, including the Galant and my Lancer and all the Mitsus we've had, you think they'd give us a deal...

Oh dude, I was so happy to finally put her back on her own feet. I just want her to move now.

So does anyone have an answer to the reverse light wiring? is it the small black harness or the big black harness?

the reverse light wiring on the automatic trans harness is the one that goes to the gear selector box, that triangle-ish shaped box. I cant recall specifically but I think that is the smaller of the two connectors, but I think my big connector was gray for some reason, that one went to the solenoids inside the trans.

As far as the reservoir, I dont know why it wouldnt fit, you need to knock out the retaining pin on the top of the master that holts the hose barb on there, once thats off the other reservoir thing replaces the whole thing. The dealer cant want that much, its $7 list price (which already has a 40% markup, even if they marked it up another 100% it would be $14, its well worth it.

so worked on the car for a little bit. It seems I got the clutch bled but there seems to be a leak where the banjo fitting is. The slave might need replacing. But there is good feel in the clutch. I wired her up and proceeded to satrt her and she didnt even click the starter didnt engage so i was like oh shit. So i proceeded to check the wiring and it seems like I got too big of connectors that the metal clip is not even penetrating the wire. So going to try it out once again with new connectors and see if she lives. I want to start this car so bad already!!!

And yes, I wired them properly yellow/black and red/black on the black harness.

Did you use two copper washers with the banjo bolt?
