Finished car pics are here ...https://www.thegalantcenter.org/showthread.php?p=446880#post446880

Ok im just going to keep posting pics of the progress. I started working on it a few days ago and so far the car is almost totally stripped to the point where I can begin fitting the JDM parts and making the needed changes and then the whole car will have every panel completely repaired before a seal coat, primer, a ton of wetsanding and finally the new color. I already tack welded the "pockets" for the JDM sidemarkers, this week I will finish welding them and grinding it all smooth. The fenders and hood were replaced because there were a good amounts of little dings and stuff in them and rather than trying to chase down every ding and filling up the front with bondo, I opted to just replace the parts. I also replaced the passenger rear door for this same reason because it had a huge dent.

it all depends on how long I take. Im doing a majority of the work myself. Tomorrow I need to finish gutting the passenger side doors. Then monday im test fitting all the parts JDM rear bumper, extensions and side skirts. Once I get them to fit to my liking I gotta pull them and get them ready for the body work. The rear bumper and sides need very very little body work, but the front bumper is a little rough, plus im shaving the license plate pocket and relocating the plate to the corner (like the EVO). I think I have about 1-2 weeks worth of body work before primer and paint, then another 1 week to re-assemble everything. So being safe, roughly 1 month and it will be done.

LOL

Whats funny is this time last year, I was talking about getting a FG JDM bumper, FG fenders and hood, molding it all into one piece and then wrapping it in CF. Then I realized if I ever got into a minor fender bended I would be effed and have to redo the whole damn thing.

Ok so I got more work done today, nothing big as right in the middle of working my boy got a call to do a tow. so I went with him, im making another thread with the accident pics as they are pretty cool. here are the pics from today. I finally got my headlights/grille to fit really good. Tomorrow im gonna trim the bumper a little more, in the lower "vents" its still rubbing the intercooler pipes a little.

Ok so a while has gone by without any updates so here we go. I have been really busy as its crunch time, car almost done, wedding in 3 weeks and trying to make it all happen on schedule. So far I removed the dash, and steering wheel. All the JDM parts have been fit and mounted, the side skirts still need to be sanded and evened out where I had to add on to them. The body work on the left side and hood will be done tomorrow, the trunk and right side should be done either thursday or friday and by friday night into saturday, we should be in primer. Im hoping to be totally painted and ready to put it back together beginning of next week. I also started working on the interior, see pics below.....

I cut this from a damaged 2008 Expedition front bumper...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork2008023.jpg

Viola!!!! I tacked it in using a plastic welder (glorified soldering iron) and then bonded it
fully with SEM Problem Plastic Bumper repair epoxy. This stuff is EXPENSIVE, but its the BEST money can buy. A tube of this stuff is about $35-$40.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork2008024.jpg

JDM Rear Bumper and Extensions are on...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork2008022.jpg

Even tho the hood was new, it had 2 small dings on the front, it took me about 10 mins worth of looking to find them, but they were there.....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork2008026.jpg

Fender needed more work than I thought. The problem is the metal is so thin, when you weld it warps a little, even though I was using low heat and doing spot welds, it still warped a fair amount, but wtf, I will have flush fit JDM sidemarkers.

Dash color changed....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork2008027.jpg

I have to do the rest of the interior over the next few days. All I can say is that SEM makes amazing quality products. I painted my A pillar pod with their paint last year and it came out like total shit and it was all my fault. I didnt properly prep the surface and I didnt use the correct paint. They making something called SEM Color Coat Vinyl/Plastic paint. Its AMAZING. Its not cheap, but well worth it. All the stuff you see in gray was painted using an aerosol can, anything black was sprayed from a HVLP professional paint gun. It sucks because the gray is only available in aerosol, I would have liked to spray it all with the HVLP as you can adjust pressure, material volume and fan width.

Ok so im not even sure where to start. Alot has gone on since I last updated this thread. All the body work has been done with the exception of "shaping" the JDM sides where they meet the fender so that there is no gap, that will be done over the weekend. The entire car has been primed, the door jambs and all the edges have been painted for the color change. As of tonight 80% of the wetsanding has been done. The car has about 10 hours of wetsanding into it and another 2 hours of wetsanding to take place tomorrow before the final paint can be sprayed. The color I went with has alot of flake in it! How much flake you ask?? Well the paint formula consists of only two components, an aluminum silver flake and a semi transparent "binder" so to speak. To mix a gallon it takes 3 parts flake and 1 part binder, I cant wait to see this thing in the sunlight. I also opted to use a high quality D-BASF Glasurit clear coat. 1 gallon of clearcoat with the appropriated catalyst was $525. I talked to as many shops as I could and they said this particular clear is the best money can buy. I also found several cars that appeared on the covers of Super Street, Modified and Import Tuner that all use this same D-BASF clear coat.

The plan is to finish wetsanding tomorrow, clean everything up, re-mask it all and shoot the color and clear. The base coat im using is a honda/acura silver that has very fine flakes. The problem with the color I am using is that the large flakes dont cover well, so to try and completely cover the primer I would need alot of material and alot of light coats. By basing it in the acura silver, I can get full coverage with 2-3 coats.

here is how it all went down over the last week and half....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork007.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork008.jpg

All the parts getting edged out, I am wearing a mask because there is paint in the air. This is just the acura base going on, the car was in the booth baking the primer on, so once it was done baking, we rolled out, put all the parts in the booth and shot the color coat and clear coats then baked them.

still waiting to be wetsanded. a black guide coat is used so after your done wetsanding, if you still see any black, you know you have a low spot that needs to be fixed prior to the color being sprayed.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork019.jpg

the entire left side is wetsanded with 400 then with 600 and is ready to be cleaned

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork020.jpg

right side almost done being wetsanded.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork021.jpg

this pic doesnt do the color justice. I dont even want to put the heatshield back on, thats how nice under the hood looks.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork022.jpg

One thing I will say is this, if I could do this ALL over again, I would have done all the primer and wetsandind and stuff with the motor/engine harness out of the car. When you wetsand, that dirty primer filled water gets EVERYWHERE. I bet I will spend at least an entire weekend cleaning out the engine bay from that stuff because it gets stuck in all the seams where the spot welds are.

Ok so it is finally PAINTED!!!

Now some good news and some bad news. The good news, even with large flakes, the color laid down very evenly and smooth. The bad news is yesterday I asked the painter if he wanted to shape the sideskirts now or wait until after the car was painted, he didnt want to do it then, so he said to wait until it was painted. We baked the car for two 45 minute cycles at 150 degrees in order to get it to cure. The painter tells me an hour later that he wants to test fit the sideskirts, we do and bam it scratches the bottom part of the fender. Not a big deal because once its installed, it covers the scratch, but he is going to fix it tomorrow anyway. Even after baking it twice, the clear is still soft, so we need to give it a few days. The next issue as we are taking all the masking tape off, we see a small dent in the right front door, WTF!!!! We spent 15+ hours wetsanding this car with guide coat, when I left last night, where wasnt a single flaw on this car. So then one of the prep guys fessed up that he was trying to clean the roof and he leaned up against the car, but he said he didnt notice a ding or else he would have told us before we painted it. The good news is, the ding is above the door reinforcement bar but below the body line, so we have full access to it from inside the door, we are going to have a paintless dent removal guy take it out on monday, so that will be gone. More good news, this clearcoat is AMAZING. Its worth every god damn penny. The shine this car has straight out of the booth is insane. My first 8g and this one never shined like this, even after a full polish/detail. I could honestly say that if I wanted to, I could skip wetsanding and compounding the clear coat and just leave it as it, thats how well it shines. Being that the paint is still "soft", my plan on starting re-assembly tomorrow has been changed. I am not touching this damn thing til monday, I want to wait at least 48 hours for that clear to really cure.

So here are some pics.

this is the acura basecoat being applied...

did you see mine brian? its a pretty basic idea...just drill a hole in the part of the bracket you want to use, then weld(doesnt need to be though obviously) a nut under the hole. and use the stock belt bracket in that location.

i will take a pic tomorrow if your not sure what im talking about

also just fyi, i know you were planning on getting them eventually. the 3g eclise belts for the back will not just bolt on. the brackets are different. you will have to somehow get the eclipse belt on the galant bracket...its probroblly pretty easy to do but i havent gotten off my lazy ass to do it lol...i really dont have people in the back often either so there is no real incentive to do it either... i will one day though lmao

the front belts however fit fine

Stewi
11-24-2008, 02:25 PM
Craig the issues with the seat brackets isnt a matter of me not being able to make a bracket, its an issue of there is 1/4" between the seats thigh bolster and the center console. I need to make something with a pretty complex angle/curve, to get right into that opening, but wont rub against the seat.

new carpet ftw....trimming it with dull scissors...ftl. Please if you do this, buy a good sharp pair of carpet shears, you will be happy you spent the $25 on them.

center console notched out around the seatbelt buckle brackets, finally it fits

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork2008055.jpg

new gauge bezel I made, it came out good until we painted it. I must have had some not totally dry resin in there, once we baked it in the booth, that shit got all wavy, fine for now, soon to be CF. All the interior bezels/door switch trims are EVO MR Graphite Gray

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork2008046.jpg

sideskirts on. I still gotta do a little work in the back part where it goes under the door, it kinda chipped it because the door is a little low, that will be resolved tomorrow when we adjust all the panels to get good lines.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/BodyWork2008056.jpg

anywhere you see dull, like under the sidemarker is either dust, or a spot we wetsanded to get a clear run out, again, this will be gone once the car is polished...

I wont be your twin after winter I promise. I have some serious CF work in the works.

I also shaved the front plate mount. Once I get pulled over a few times and get sick of paying tickets, I will make a bracket that mounts it between the FMIC and the driver side foglight

is the dash wrapped or painted black?

its painted

I used SEM Color Coat Landau Black. The gray pieces were done with aerosol cans of SEM color coat in gray, but the dash, door panels, steering wheel, A, B and C pillar trims were all sprayed from a gun in the booth. They only offer a few basic colors that can be ordered by the quart to spray from a gun.

So I brought her home tonight. I am really happy she is back home, its nice to open the garage door and see her sitting there.

Tomorrow im going to adjust the ride height and install the wheels and the rest of the interior. I have to hold off on the brembo's for now, I have all the parts, but not enough time as the wedding is saturday and im gonna spend the better part of tomorrow running around with my friends picking up the tux's and etc. I will post pics tomorrow. Its completely wetsanded and polished and then tomorrow we are going to do a final hand glaze and full detail. I will post pics after that.

Ok so its finished. Let me tell you, anyone who plans on getting married, listen up. The day before your wedding will be the most chaotic day of your life up until that point. I spent morning and night working on the car while doing other stuff like getting my tux and haircut and bs stuff all day, then the rehersal dinner and shit. So yea, its finally done. I will take pics tomorrow before the wedding. I must say that my suede wrapping of the door panels sucks a big one. The wrapping itself came out pretty good, but the suede is a little too thick and it caused the handle and switch trim bezels to fit crooked. I mean for me, im fine because its only for the wedding, the car will be off the road soon and the interior will be done by a pro.

Holy blast from the past, shane is in the house.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. The ceremony and reception went exactly and planned and we couldnt be happier. Myself and my best man took the G to the church, me and the wife left from the church in the G and then drove 15 miles to take photos, then back to the catering hall and then finally home with the G. I must have caught some luck because there are still a few bugs to be worked out as well as a desperate need of a re-tune ( it was tuned at 70 degrees, now its 45 degrees out) and even with that, the car ran solid. No pics yet as its been non-stop chaos since friday. Someone took a video of me doing a small burnout leaving the church (sorry god, but the wife asked me to do it, I swear she did) I will try to get that vid and some pics up after the honeymoon, No TGC for me for the next 8 days, I will have some catching up to do when I get back.
