View Full Version : Subs cutting out at low volume

This has really been bugging me for about a year now. I have 2 rockford p300 amps and 2 JL W3's. 1 amp for each sub.
My problem is, sometimes at regular volume the subs give very weak response (power light on the amps are on), then if i turn the volume all the way up, the subs will kick back on full strength, and i can turn the music back to a normal level and the bass will work for a few minutes and then will go weak again. Sometimes the bass doesnt kick back on no matter how high i turn the volume. Sometimes if i hit a small bump the bass will go really weak, and it will have to turn the volume all the way up to get it to come back on.

Judging by the symptoms i have ruled out the remote, power, and grounds to the amps. Since the power light on the amps never goes out.

So im thinking that it is either loose, or shitty RCAs. Or a problem with the subs themselves.

Anybody have any ideas.

Try running another set of RCAs, don't get to worried about taking out the old rcas or pulling up the carpet at all yet. Just run the wire from the deck to the amp straight, that will rule out or solve a possible RCA issue. Other than that you could always look at the subs themselves and see if the speaker leads are loose or worn awkwardly. I'd doubt it is an issue with the amplifier, but do you have any other amps you could try swapping in to see if it is the internal amp circuitry?

also, my amps are not overheating and going into protection mode, as this happens as soon as i start the car.

Im going to try the RCA's when i get a chance. Im not going to worry too much about it since i wont be driving the Galant for the winter, but it was just on my mind.
