Its time to start this thing, as you remember this summer i picked up a 4g63 head and a 14b turbo. Now that school is coming to a end im get to dump some money into the G that has been waiting patently.

what i have to start with
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z128/viper306m/DSC00435.jpg

http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z128/viper306m/DSC00436.jpg

have'nt decided if im going to run the 14b or if im going to go with something bigger.

the parts list
4g63 head kit
4g63 timing kit
new rods
new pistons
rings and bearings
intercooler piping kit
intercooler
2g equal length exhaust manifold and down pipe
2g turbo ecu (eprom if i can find one)
2g wire harness
BOV
maf translator
wide band o2 sensors
aem ems
boost gauge
boost controller
oil pressure gauge
oil lines
2g distributor
cams? haven't (decided if im going to cam it)
adjustable cam gears
injectors
fuel rail
fuel pump
and a 5 spd swap with lsd.
im still forgetting stuff but thats the basic parts list that im going to have by the end of January.
The goal is to have it done by June or July.
pics of the head getting pulled apart tomorrow when i get done. Once it is all pulled apart im going to take it to work and throw it in the hot bath with all the components. My friends dad owns a grinding shop that is going to blanchor grind the head for me for a case of beer, also know some one with a dyno thats going to charge 200 dollars for a session, which the session time is as long as i need to complete the tunes.

Stay tuned.

i was thinking about getting a nicer one, or cleaning that one up really good and having it powder coated. The intake side of that head is really carbon'd up im not sure yet what im going to do to clean that out.

the 3 inch thickness might be an issue for fitment behind our stock bumpers.. ive done measurements and talked 2 4grim about it for my turbo project and he said the 3 will b 2 thick and ull have 2 hack the front bumper.. how do u plan on making it fit?

kolio
12-05-2008, 12:41 PM
looking good so far. my 2.5" intercooler will fit snug behind the DE bumper. 3 is doable but you are going to have to trim a bit

Galant306m
12-05-2008, 01:19 PM
im going to buy the 97-98 bumper before April, fits a intercooler better.

edit: oh yea i won my katskinz :) leather seats ftw.

Galanttuner10
12-05-2008, 02:36 PM
i dont like the grills on the 97-98 so im leaving mine and since u r swapping the bumpers u should b good.. good luck with the build man.. im just getting all my parts in within the next month or 2 then its time 2 do it

Galant306m
12-06-2008, 02:59 AM
thanks! just to let you know getting all your parts in a month or so is hard trust me, ive spent well over a g already on stuff for my car and i still have about 4gs to go lol, not going to have them all by the end of January but ill still get everything that i need and more.

Galanttuner10
12-06-2008, 10:22 AM
well i have a lot of dsm guys around me and the only things im missing for the turbo build id the intercooler, intercooler piping and an eprom ecu.. i have everything else and ive started collecting parts not even a week ago.. i know where 2 get the ecu and i know the intercooler im getting and the piping im using so i will have the part soon

you are going to do the headswap, but im not going to do the headswap until later on when i upgrage to an 18g or 20g down the line so u need more parts and more work than i do.. good luck and im looking forward 2 seeing the finished project

looking good so far, keep it up

A few pieces of advice I have for you.

Those cam gears are sick, but for what your doing, you dont really "need" them. Although its rare, adjustable cam gears can slip causing timing trouble and possibly major engine damage. For me, I had no choice but to run them, but when doing this headswap for a 7g you can use the stock gears from a 94 gs and the timing will be on the money, those gears too are only like $45 brand new from mitsu for the pair.

Also, I saw your lifters were numbered, are you planning on reusing them? I reused a set once, cleaned and bled them and they were still kinda crappy. you can buy a complete set of new ones on ebay for $105 shipped, its definetly worth the investment.

Brian and Crower Valve springs came today, surprisingly they where the cheapest ones that i could find plus they have a nice nytryde coating on them for strength. hahah they included a print with the springs im going to take one to work and see how well the hold tolerances lol cause im that way.

also im going to order some skunk 2 titanium retainers to complement the springs and my lil surprise that will be here soon.

Im hate to say it but this might end up on hold for a couple months, my school bill is really expensive this semester. 370 a month for me to attend sucks. Idk i might be able to buy some more stuff here and there. I think im going to buy all my swap stuff and then in april/may when im done with school ill buy my 20g, my cams and my 5spd stuff all at once.

So i think my list for the next month is going to be

Timing Kit
Head gasket kit
gauges
and get my head work done...

im taking it that you just routed the turn signal wires up to the side markers and hooked them up there? Thats what i was going to do. And proto how did you hook up the fogs, i have the wires with the plugs hanging (carroded as fuck) I was just going to hook them up to my headlight wires and have them turn on at the same time.

Anyone here use the gates racing t-belt. i can get a good deal on one, they have a better construction then OEM and are made from a stronger material. Just looking for some input i dont want to break one and have to replace my ss valves.

wait the 63 belt wont work for the 63 head on the 64 block?? Good thing i didnt buy anything hahahaha.

you also need the 64 cam gears for the hybrid motor

Galant306m
01-27-2009, 12:56 PM
now im all confused so i cant use the cam gears that i got, and i have to use a 64 dohc tbelt. hmm what if i just change out the lower sprocket??

Galanttuner10
01-27-2009, 03:07 PM
you can use the 63 cam gears but the timing is off like half a notch cuz the 64 block has a taller deck height.. it is worth it 2 run the 64 cam gears to keep the timing the same.. o and in case u didnt know u cant use the 63 head gasket either.. u need a 64 dohc head gasket

The 94 GS cams are only like $25 a piece jnz tuning sells them.

Ok, i put this on hold for a month well in that month i paid off my school and my credit card so now im free to buy stuff again. I really need to get the head out but im so busy its hard to make time.

So when i get paid again im going to order a few more things
Fuel rail and injectors
my gauges that i want (boost, oil preasure, wide band 02,)
ecu (biggest thing i need right now)

So lets get this thing moving again. toss me some ideas if you have some i want to get this thing done soon.

What ECU? Evo ECU? Why are you buying a fuel rail?

For gauges, get Prosports, they are cheap and work good: http://prosportgauges.com/
For wideband, snag up the Innovatec wideband that qnz is selling, $120 shipped: https://www.thegalantcenter.org/showthread.php?t=35113
Injectors, you could snag some Evo 560cc injectors for $125 or so.

Im thinking about getting a eprom so i can run dsm link. I dont mind piggy backs but they dont have as much tuning capabilities as a ems does. Seth i will take your advice on the injectors and the fuel rail was just because it looks better more then less.

And thanks QNZ for the wideband o2.

how to wire up a innovate wideband and install the gauge pod.

So this is what ive been working on all weekend had to take a break for the meet yesterday and im just finishing it up now.

Qnz sold me a innovate wide band at a really good price so rob and i started to hook it up on friday ran into a couple problems where their wiring colors sucks, we got it working good and now just need to finish up by soldering the rest of the wires and hooking up my other two gauges.

The three gauges i got are

Wide Band O2
Boost/vaccum (for the turbo when it goes in sometime lol)
and Oil pressure
( i have a narrow band AFR gauge if anyone would want to buy it just pm me ill get some pics of it)

well i ordered lowering loaded tokico struts with a 1.25 drop, and new tires for me and rob today. Will get the tires mounted next week and soon after my 7g will be lowered again just not as low as it used to be with my shitty ebay springs. PICS will be posted im so excited for no more 4x4 you can't even imagine.

for the people that dont know my car it was this low once i loved how it looked just hated how it rode so i took them off and two years later im going to be lowered again.

let me know if you have questions about stuff. i got tons of data lying around somewhere!

what gauges are those?

Galant306m
03-21-2009, 04:45 AM
Glow shift Gauges. I wasnt sure about them at first they came with the pillar but i actually really like them, they are not blinding at night like some of the ones that i see people with, they have a real suttle look to them with just a while led. My AFR on the other hand is really bright, its a innovate wide band that i got from QNZ. Going to trim the pillar pod up and mount it to my stock apillar cause no matter how hard i try i can not get the intagra one to fit nicely.

We still gotta hook that sucker up to your rheostat so it automatically dims when you turn your lights on. It will be much less of a nuisance once we do that. I wish I could dim my AFR gauge :(

looking good there. ah and how r u gonna match the "flat black paint" of yours with the spoiler?

im not sure where a i read it , but 8g crank is supposed to be forged and if you notice some manufacturers like Eagle describe the 100mm crank as 2g and evo stroker crank. If it works for our cars then it will be a much cheaper option than actual eagle crank

Galant306m

yea its a big fmic, but i hate small front mounts on cars they just look stupid so i got the biggest on that i could fit.

Nah the egal crank is out of budget so i got one from, http://www.rpmmachine.com/crankshaftkitschrymits.html i got the topline crank with bearings.

i test fitted the bumper over the front mound and im going to have to do minamal trimming to make it fit, just for the piping to fit and it should be good other wise i can make it come down. i took my ac shit out and re routed that brake line, also i moved the support bar out of the way by heating it up and bending it in, with a flat hammer and some heat i pounded it flat.

i want a new crank really, the problem is i have 190k on my car and the crank is out of round so its just cheaper for me to get a new one then have it machined and then get special bearings to make the old one work.

alright guys nearing the end of my build.

crank has been shipped to my grandfathers house, and i will be honing the cylinders, im going to go pick my pistons up and take them to work for a nice hot bath then clean the ring groves so i can reassemble the block after i get it honed.

Now time for some questions that i have,
Timing is the biggest question i have, since i bought the adjustable cam gears does anyone know what to set the at.

With the 5spd swap are the axels the same or is the spline different, the trans is out of a 94gs.

I know that im going to run dsm link, does it matter what year eprom i get? The only reason i ask this is my car is setup for OBD2, but i don't have emissions in my county so i dont know if it will really make a difference.

Ugh since i have the money to buy everything i need now, this is getting really stressful because there are just so many things im unsure of.

Help me out if you have info on any of this, im not completely lost i just need help confirming my thoughts.

Galanttuner10
07-13-2009, 05:10 PM
for the cam gears they are 63 so they should be advanced half a notch from stock 63 timing

i believe the axles are the same as when i ordered my new axle the only question was abs or non not auto or 5 spd

shouldnt mater what year eprom as long as its eprom and socketed

seth98esT
07-13-2009, 05:14 PM
Since you have a 96, a 2g EPROM will be easiest to wire. If you want to rewire every single wire into the 3-plug 1g setup, then get a 1g EPROM ECU.

Shadow19
07-13-2009, 06:01 PM
My auto axles swapped over to my 5 speed... Im not sure what year my tranny is out of but i think its a 94. Also from speaking with John about tuning and whatnot. DSM link isnt the way to go. Get the ostrich eprom emulator and talk to john what program to run on that. The emulator is all of like 100 bucks and the software is free and from what he said its far better than dsm link. i dont see spending 600 bucks for that shit if you dont have to u know?

Galant306m
07-13-2009, 10:26 PM
Thanks guys, I actually contacted ams about my timing question. They say to set them at tdc and adjust 2 degrees clockwise, so that is solved since the markings on my gears are in degrees.

bmore303
07-14-2009, 05:45 AM
Since he has a 96 Galant it would be easiest to run some form of 2G tuning, pretty much making ostrich a more difficult setup in this case. As far as DSMlink goes, quite a bit has changed since v2 to v3, not to mention some updates they have coming. I would read further into it and decide for yourself as both are capable of the same thing. That's def a 16G housing on that turbo. Hope it all works out well for you.

Thanks for the love guys.

I will be buying the rest of my parts when i get paid next friday i need another 650 bux worth of parts to make the car run. The engine will be back together next weekend, i would work on it this weekend but my grandparents are going out of town so i dont have access to the block, my pistons are at work going through parts washing and magnaflux (for anyone who doesnt know magnafluxing is basically taking the rods and magnatizing the crap out of them and using a fine steal powder to check for cracks.)

For the block as stated before i will be honing the cylinders out myself which isnt a big deal, i got to get the block to work to have it hot bathed, so i can paint it black.

I should be able to pull the auto trans out this weekend, so i can get the engine back in, in two weeks and then its all to wiring.

My goal is to have it done in a month now, i want it to be back on the road for labor day weekend since my family goes on vacation up north, so that will be the first long drive for the G.

Hey man. Just for future reference... Its 100000x easier to pull the motor with the tranny attatched to it. I think ive gotten my motor out and on the engine stand in 5 hours give or take and thats from undoing wires and breaking down suspension to pull axles. i couldnt imagine how much of a bitch it would be to leave the tranny in then pull the block. I only say this because you can bet your highest dollar on it that you WILL be pulling it again down the road. LOL..

Manley pistons - great choice! Thats what Im getting - best price for forged pistons!

Galant306m
07-25-2009, 06:32 PM
yea i did it myself, i bought a spring style hone from snap'on and my grandpa taught me how to hone it and then put the cross hatching in, my cylinders mic'd up only about .0005-.001 taper which is really really good, after honing they are about .0015-.002 over the stock size so i can get stock sized pistons and rings which is really nice.

going to work on finishing up my FMIC mount tonight, snaked a peice of angle iron from work that is 25 inch's long so i just have to put some holes in it and that should be done, hoping to have the engine back together next weekend and in the car so all i have left to do is wire it up.

Hey galant306 how difficult is it to do drop in pistons on the 4g64 and built head? I believe I could do it but would need a step by step tut...

Um i wouldnt say its hard by any means its like doing every other type of engine just take your time and make sure everything comes out right, meaning just double check everything and then check it again. I can recommend a couple of things, get a new crank and have it reground to match the main bearings its worth the money and not having to spend the time plastic gauging the crank and the bearings. Seperating the rods from the pistons is another daunting challenge since the wrist pin is such a tight press fit, what i did is heated the area on the rods with a propane torch and use a vice with a couple sockets to press the old pins out, and since the new pins that come with the pistons will be the same tight fit, i took the pins and put them in the freezer for 4 hrs causing them to shrink. Then once the pins are cold take and oil up the rod end and the piston, quickly grab the pins and start tapping them in with a hammer being cautious not to miss and hit your pistons, it will be kinda tough but they will go in. I can make a tutorial for you when i finish the engine completely.

Oh and no i did not use the vice to put the new pistons on the rods. Lol

Shadow19
08-17-2009, 05:50 AM
one more thing. Remember to put the piston rings in an x pattern. None of the rings should be at the 12 or 6 o clock position. Every motor i ever built has called for that in the book.

I didnt fuck anything major up but i did install the crank sensor and tigger plate backwards along with the rocker arm tube upside down and the lash adjusters werent oiling correctly. I did pretty good for my first build though. Ive put about 25k miles on it and she is still ticking along and i beat on her depending on my mood.. LOL. BTW bro if you need some help man feel free to PM me or whatever. I can help out as much as i can on the mechanical shit. The wiring is a different beast. I havent fucked with that much. Thats why i need you my friend!

Thanks man you help me out alot so ill help you as much as i can. This is the first engine i have built but i do have something most people dont a mechanic for a cousin and a grandfather that has built many racing engines in the past.

you has a pm.

So like. He just gave me the list of mods for the winter. What the fuck does a banana, peanut shell, electrical tape and a g-string have to do with the mod list? Im still not impressed. I think he is missing a few essentials here. Maybe if he added a coconut bra and some super glue it would complete the list. Until that changes im not impressed with anything!
