Alright so it has begun. I have been lurking in the shadows while piecing everything together and now its time to reveal my master plan.
My 7g will be undergoing a major transformation in the next couple of months to a year.

The Plan:
5 spd swap
rear disc swap
tokico suspension kit
cleared corner head lights
and last but not least
the installation of the turbo setup

so far:
i have the headlights and the 14b turbo
will be ordering the suspension kit very soon
all turbo parts within the next month or 2
and when that is all set im going to gather all the 5 spd parts and then when the auto shits the bed the 5 spd is ready 2 go in

im waitin to do the swap as this tranny is only 4 months old and is in great shape
ill keep you posted as i gather new parts and ill inclusde some pics along the way

yes...kill the auto!!!

Galanttuner10
12-11-2008, 01:02 PM
yea brian im gonna fry the auto then swap it.. might as well get some use out of it..

turbo arrived 2day and i checked it out and everything checks out.. its in the same condition as the last time i saw it when i took it outta his car

Galanttuner10
12-23-2008, 12:09 AM
alright we r moving along and the intercooler got here 2day.. its a 27x5.5x2.5 with 2 inch i got it instead of an evo 8 intercooler cuz im leaving the stock bumber and this intercooler will run right along the bottom opening

ill have 2 take some pics of everything as i have the tokico suspension kit and the sway bar and the headlights im just getting the rest of the turbo parts before i snap some picks

Galanttuner10
01-06-2009, 05:24 PM
i got bored and did the headlights the other day and heres how they came out

im at a little bit of a cross road.. i am going 2 also be getting a 2g head and stuff. heres the choice and id like some input on this. i was thinking of just going dohc and doing the ecu swap for now.. then when i convert it 2 5 spd then make it turbo

any input is nice.. i know the auto will blow with the turbo and the added top end of the dohc can hold me till i go 5 spd

or i can go turbo on stock motor as i first planned and hope the auto holds

or ai can do it all at once

remember im not going 5spd anytime soon.. wut should i do?

haha 4grim i dont have them there but i had both garages full as it was snowing out lmao

and the intercooler may look tinny but its not.. its pretty solid.. i think the flash reflecting off it made it look that way

get an evo 9 factory bypass valve, very reliable, cheap, evo guys keep theirs for a reason, unless of course you want the noisy psh noise

not trying to ruin the sale, I'm just suggesting it, a lot of DSM guys are using them as well rather than going aftermarket

yes exactly it is laid flat and flows very well in that position and no1 can c it at all

That FMIC isn't going to get much air to it at all...

Galanttuner10
04-09-2009, 09:51 AM
its not a matter of who told me that its a matter of ive done it before on a turbo tbird and it flows very well there.. it isnt something any of you have done so dont think you guys all know.. and if there is an issue i can change it later on.. im not worried about where it is at all

turbo gets hot anyway its a matter of heatsoaking the intercooler and causing overheatinf of the system.. but it flows well there trust me

I think MItch meant the air flowing through the turbo will be hotter than usual.

If you say it works by experience then I wont go against you. But I highly doubt its efficient in that spot.

and I've tried it all, SMIC, FMIC, TMIC, etc. I've even played around with air-water intercoolers.

are you going to make a duct that will direct air into the intercooler atleast??

well, nonetheless good luck with the build hope it all works out for you

if you look at the design of the bumper all the air comes in below the radiator and everything and is directed up.. theres a piece that helps push the air up.. i know it gets air and flow cuz driving in any wet conditions the top od the intercooler is covered and the only way water can get there is from underneath

or its coming in through the grill.

Lol before my G1 cut my post off it read

That turbo is going to get hot which having your FMIC mounted like that and not getting alot of air the intake temp is going to be outrageous.!

From owning a turbo eclipse and working on various other turbo cars... you are going to heat soak very bad..

agreed. we're all just trying to help you bro.

Try it like that, tune it and see how much power you make.

on the same tune, mount it the right way and see how much power you make then.

it will be a big difference and the intake temperatures wont be as high.

I'd like to see the results with this IC setup, there are quite a few Rx7s running V mounted intercoolers that are almost laid flat, and they seem to do just fine, so we'll see

Galant306m
04-09-2009, 01:52 PM
i think it could do fine, i mean i like the idea but i think the way the 7g front is made not much air makes it to the top. I might make up a duct for you if you want just send me the dimensions of your FMIC and i will use my usdm bumper and make something for you to direct air to the fmic.

greddy
04-09-2009, 02:03 PM
^I agree with you completely, as long as there is proper ducting, he should be fine

We must also not forget about the temperature of the air after passing through the intercooler. While a complicated duct that somehow manages to not block the radiator (while still providing enough cool air to the intercooler to not make it completely useless) seems like a reasonable band-aid, the air will be flowing straight into the hood latch area and the hood, greatly decreasing the velocity. In a normal FMIC setup, the air flows straight through the intercooler to the radiator, and is then pulled through by the cooling fans into what is usually a reasonably open space in the engine compartment, instead of trying to cram all of the air into a tiny area by the hood latch. There's a reason that most factory radiators and intercoolers (the STI being an exception) are mounted perpendicular to the ground. I'm no mechanical engineer or expert in fluid dynamics, but it kinda just makes sense.

exactly i took this mounting idea from that style and this is how we did it on the tbird

the air is coming from underneath not above and the 7g bumper gets plenty air in and it gets turned up toward the radiator and such.. there is no right way to mount an intercooler only the commonly accepted way

hey i hope youre right. with the bumper you have its hard to see anything thru it anyway. the location will also make the IC piping route longer and as far as i know many DSMers prefer a shorter route piping

bmore303
04-09-2009, 10:35 PM
Get an IAT sensor and test both positions. Arguing the physics of this would be a waste of time and would go over most peoples head's.

Proto
04-10-2009, 12:31 AM
shorter piping and mounting the IC the proper way is the best way. i still think in the spring and summer you are going to heat soak like a DSM with a 50 trim on a stock sidemount

Galanttuner10
04-10-2009, 04:44 PM
piping isnt as long as you guys think and i will make it the shortest i can no long ways for me.. and i usually dont drive too far and i dont beat the shit outta my g so it shouldnt heatsoak often at all

Galanttuner10
07-13-2009, 02:29 AM
ok heres a little update.. suspension has been done and i put on the rear sway bar

i have the 63t head just waiting to be put on, but due to lack of funds i have decided to turbo first headswap later like next spring...

the 14b that i had blew up shortly after a preliminary run on my car, it was on my buddies talon as he already blew his up 2 days before and i have just picked up another one in much better condition than the old one

due to space issue i will be mounting the intercooler more in the traditional manner but still angled a bit.. piping is going to be 2.5 inch aluminum, tbolt clamps etc and im welding on the 1g bov flange as thats my choice of bov

exhaust due to me already getting an exhaust ticket for my car will be a stock 2g downpipe with my cat back, as they are the same diameter and it will not be as loud as the megan racing 3 inch and adds to the sleeper look for now.. prolly will go 3 inch and an evo3 16g later on but for now this will do

im wiring in the safc and resistor pack and im just debating about the ecu swap as i dont want to mess up the pins and such but i might go stock ecu for now just tune it the best i can with the safc and keep the boost set at 8 psi and never higher than 10 as is

Galant306m

well ill get pics later on one of these days.. i just need the new 3 inch downpipe to come in and the intercooler piping and im ready to go turbo.. headswap will be over the winter and 5 spd prolly next summer

and i hope i dont need that other tranny.. this one is still mint and its only been in for almost a year now.. i dont paln on beating her up 2 bad :FIREdevil:

o and i am picking up a set of jdm tails within the next week

Galanttuner10
07-22-2009, 01:04 AM
so as an update...

intercooler piping is coming in next week

got my downpipe and j pipe 2day

also picked up a b16g that was sitting at my buddies house for free, but will only use the 14b on the stock little 64 for now

ordering wally 255 next week

picking up a 2g oil pan and all the water and oil lines next week

then hooking it all up hopefully by my birthday august 27th

Galanttuner10
09-16-2009, 09:41 PM
all turbo parts have been here for a while, but working 6 days a week leaves little time to work on the car

i have put the stock suspension back up front preping it for the cold months, and shortly after showing up at the JY to get the shocks and springs i realize its a 5 speed 7G with everything in it and they only want 325 for everything and they are pulling the tranny i pull the reast, clutch slave and master, cables pedal etc so that will be happening next month

turbo will be next summer and hopefully the headswap will be as well

dude thats messed up.. im not selling the 14b as there is no shaft play or bent fins and the 16g needs a rebuild but still works oddly enough.. id say save then decide on what you really wanna do..

my parts for the turbo with everything will be around 2k to 3k and its a pretty basic build, i put money into tuning(MAFT PRO 400 bucks just for it)

decide if you just want a turbo or if you wanna build the motor as well and get a bigger turbo or something

mko
10-24-2009, 11:24 PM
you better rebuild that TB and clean the passages inside. The seals on my TB were garbage, but I couldnt take a chance of having some stupid ass leak like this. Youll have to figure out if youre gonna rewire the IAC or use block off plate. And better read up about the vacuum line rerouting, cuz you want to use OBD1 TB in OBD2 car.

Galanttuner10
10-24-2009, 11:30 PM
yea mko.. im really researching on the dsm forums as they do this swap all the time in a 2g so that is really the least of my worries.. and i did plan on using the block off.. seals seem good and everything i might not venture fully with the TB until i do the head swap

only way to tell if the throttle shaft seals are good or not is to do a boost leak test after you've installed everything(including the throttle body)

with that said, if you haven't rebuilt that throttle... its about 99.9% a sure thing that those seals are original, and about 100% sure if they are original then they will leak under boost and kill your tune.

Im thinking this is where my vacuum leak is coming from.. Do you have a link where i can buy the seals? Or is all of that shit on v-faq?

If you plan to have the TB rebuilt, especially having the throttle plate shaft seals replaced I have a guy that does immaculate job on doing them with TONS of experience. He did my TB on my GVR4 and bored it 64mm at a very reasonable price. PM me here or on GT and I will get you the info.

no Gary, i got one without the hole from John's old black GS so there is no more hole

yeah the GS came factory equipped with a spoiler(not dealer installed)
as such, the rear deck did not have the third brakelight in it, and so the rear deck is smooth where the brake light would have been.

should be picking up an Evo 3 O2 housing tomorrow and ordering all new OEM mitsu bolts and gaskets.. i have decided on an SAFC for now. i know its not the greatest, but its easy to tune and wont be too restrictive for now.

also. i am taking the 7 cm housing off my 16G and putting it on the 14b along with the ported 2g mani and evo 3 O2 housing i should be set there

mko
11-20-2009, 05:18 AM
Just a heads up. Evo 3 O2 housing is different. The outlet is 2.5'', the bolts are at 4'' and its kind of tilted a bit. Now all ebay or vendor downpipes are meant for 2g O2 housing which will cause some problems , cuz youre gonna have to bend the flex pipe a lot and still may not be able to make it work w/o putting a lot of stress on the flex pipe. The pther thing is the bolt pattern - 2g downpipe has 3.5'' between the bolt holes. Just my 2cents

you are correct sir. still weighing the option of doing it that way or cutting all the connections off that i need to use in the head swap and itll help with the ecu repinning

seth98esT
12-14-2009, 10:32 PM
Not sure what ECU you are going to use, but since you have a 96(4-connector ECU), unless you go with a 1g ECU, keeping the 7g harness will be easier then swapping to a 2g harness.

You technically arent re-pinning the ECU, you are simply moving 4 or 5 wires around and adding a couple new pins.

i plan on getting the car painted this summer or fall and having the turbo and motor done and next year i think AWD and some coilovers would be awesome

Ive been catching hell because i dont know dick about tuning. MKO has helped me out alot and if i get a good base tune with my setup and you need the settings ill help you as much as i can.

ive basically had the 5 speed swap for a few months as it was at my buddies junkyard, and now i feel its acually time to go pay for it and pick it up. so ill be getting it by the end of next week. then gotta get the new clutch, new clutch fork, pivot ball, shifter bushings and flywheel

going with an ACT 2100 6 puck unsprung and a fidanza 8.5 lb flywheel

My advice...?
Don't get a riveted hub on your daily driver. It WILL chatter and have harsh engagement.

4 puck, 6 puck, all fine... Just make sure they are sprung for a street car.

i was looking at a 6 puck unsprung as its on the 1g daily my buddy has that ive driven and it seemed smooth to me. same clutch and flywheel i was looking into because of that.

might go 6 puck sprung then from what you are saying but i will see in a month or 2

ok so here is an update. picked up the 1g prop valve to finish the rear disc swap parts so that will be happening within the next 2 weeks

the cylinder head is being disassembled and cleaned and planed as we speak at the machine shop and i have all the parts for that now all gaskets and parts etc

full turbo setup ready to go just need to pick up a wideband and im good to go

and today i just picked up the whole 5 speed swap today. everything needed all bolts fittings clips everything. i have a lightweight flywheel and i am picking up an ACT 2100 this weekend and i want to have it in by the end of june.

i have all the parts but no time.. man i need a daily lol

05-27-2010, 11:15 AM
Chris your garage is looking like mine. Def do 5spd first cause like me you would be so tempted to put your foot down if you did turbo and 5spd at same time. After you break in the clutch toss on the turbo.

I may have the parts on by end of summer, they cut my hours at work and I havent been able to finish parts on either turbo or 5spd. To finish 5spd parts will cost me like 400-500 more probably and to finish turbo parts will cose me another 600 plus i the $300 boom slang harnes. So about another 1300 and everything should be in :)

Galanttuner10
05-27-2010, 12:46 PM
steve i have everything for the 5 speed. flywheel has like 400 miles on it and the clutch disc has 1500 and looks new so i really dont have to break in much at all. im just wating on everything so that i have enough backups shit in case something goes wrong or needs fixing. i have 2 clutches, an ACT 2100 unrevised pressure plate with revised clutch disc and then a daiken pp with a luk clutch and i have the lightweight flywheel and the stock one both in mint shape. just need the time to swap it. i was gonna have Al (bronxbombr) swap it just need money to have him do it

Shadow19
05-27-2010, 02:29 PM
Yea that flywheel is pretty much brand spanking new. The F1 clutch held up to some nice power before we blew my gf's car up. Ebay turbo wastegate didnt open so we spiked boost to 30 PSI and BOOM TINK TINK TINK!.. BUT MAN DID IT PULL HARD! I run that same flywheel in the 7g. It takes some getting used to for street driving. Taking off is a little more complicated with the lightweight flywheels than the stockers. However if you delete the balance shafts and use that flywheel your 2.4 will rev wicked fast or atleast mine does ;-). OH.. Ill give you a heads up on your turbo build because i ran into these issue with mine.

1. remove the driver side radiator fan if youre going to put that turbo in the car with the j-pipe on
2. if you buy the ebay tubular o2 housing and 2g down pipe be prepared to have it cut and weld it (i recommend you buy this). It hits the oil pan because of the flange angle on the O2 housing. I had to cut the down pipe about 3'' down from the flange where it connects to the O2 housing and extend it about 2'' or so.
3. Down pipe is also too short
4. If you run the ebay O2 housing use their gasket with some copper sealer. Their flanges arent perfectly flat so youll need the thickness of their gasket to make up for that. OEM is too slim and will leak. Trust me i know. I was able to stick a feeleer gauge between the mating surfaces when i torqued them down.
5. Down pipe needs to be modified to fit the hangers on the 7g. There is 3/8'' rods that come out on the DP on both sides, the passenger side hit on the front sub frame. To fix this i cut a chunk out of the rod and welded it back together for strength.
6. If youre running a GM MAF sensor and not doing the recirculation and dont want to relocate your battery PM me and ill find the link to the K&N air filter that i bought that is a PERFECT fit for the turbo (i have a small 16g 2 1/4 inlet). Its a 5x3'' filter with an offset inlet so it doesnt hit the block or anything like that. I spent hours measuring and all that to see what works and thats the ONLY ONE that i can find.
7. Dont listen to the dsm guys or honda guys about not running coolant lines to that turbo. It was designed to have coolant so run coolant in that bitch. Use the throttle body coolant lines to feed the turbo and just eliminate them on the TB.
8. The 2g DENSO O2 sensor is a PERFECT fit if you elimate the harness extension from the OEM 7g sensor. The reason i say DENSO is because DENSO is OEM sensor. Rock auto has them for 45 bucks.
9. The oil return tube does stretch. You will find that its too short for the motor because the 2.4 has a higher deck height than the 4g63 (hence the reason for the down pipe issue). Bolt it to the oil pan first without a gasket then tighten it to the turbo. Trust me, this works. I couldnt tell you how many places i went to try and find oil proof hose that will fit that pipe if you cut it and i had no luck. Its designed to have that flex part in it so it works.
10. If youre not good at soldering. Learn it now. Its pretty easy once you do it a few times.
11. If you are going to use the stock maf sensor then good luck getting an aftermarket turbo pipe to work.
12. There is a guy on the full throttle site selling a maf translator gen2 for 150 brand new. I would get that to be honest with you so you dont have a headache fitting a turbo pipe and relocating your battery.

Thats about it for now. Trust me YOU WILL RUN INTO PROBLEMS. It took me 4 months for a reason. I worked little by little and i did it the right way. I dont want to go back and do shit again. So do not cheap out on your first round.

i have an evo 3 o2 housing and know that will be a headache and i also have a 2g and 1g shousing if need be. i drove my buddies 30r 1g gsx with the 8lb flywheel and a 6 puck unsprung.. that was a bitch and chattered like hell but im fine with the lightweight it wont be too bad. i will run coolant lines and turbo time it. reason i am putting this all off and saving up is my buddy is bored with the 30r and i may pick it up and make this a beast and finish the other motor as well and get a daily. prolly wont get it but ill be ready to if i can

Shadow19
05-27-2010, 03:09 PM
Well good luck. The 5 speed swap is pretty easy. The only thing i had a major issue with was the shift cables. I cut the auto ones in the engine bay with some bolt cutters so that made it it a bit easier but it was still a mother fucker to put the 5 speed ones in.

05-27-2010, 03:23 PM

Coming along nicely. What will you be running for engine management with the turbo setup? I keep thinking if I'd had an OBDII car I would have run a late 2g turbo or Evo ECU for the reflash capabilities and simple wiring.

for 100 dollars is a good job

Galanttuner10
09-10-2010, 11:32 AM
so i think i have figured out the setup for the head at least

lets see here

Graveyard Motorsports 274 cams, yes they have a custom 274 grind
Crower spings and titanium retainers
EPN Stainless valves and bronze valve guides
EPN 3G Lifters
Supertech valve stem seals
Stock 4G64 DOHC Cam gears

All i need off that lists are the springs, valves, and cams. rest is already in my possession

the bottom end is where i cant decide on the setup. i know i want forged rods and pistons and ACL bearings and whatnot, but im really debating about the crank. stock cranks are pretty strong but there is this really nice forged one from manley and the whole rotating assembly with the crank, rods, pistons and rings, acl race bearing and ARP rod bolts is only 1500 and is so tempting.

stock crank with manley rods and pistons with all the other stuff will probably be like 800-1000 depending on the deals etc, so what do you guys think, is a forged crank worth it? i do plan on running at least a 30r setup in the future

eclipsh

i figured as much. but i sill say that rotating assembly was tempting. decided stock crank earlier. awd will be happening in the next coming years maybe sooner but i want the new motor done first because then i dont need to worry about the cars dependability as much. who knows what will happen "crosses fingers for winning lotto ticket"

now i know it is a 3 inch but i dont feel any major difference like losing too much back pressure as i still have both stock cats (cali car) and the sound is a very smooth tone still no ricer honda tone which makes me happy

as far as the rest of the build goes, the DOHC cylinder head is all set for whenever i decide to use it. turbo is freshly rebuilt and balanced. new block cleaned honed etc. major set back has been my dad going through a divorce and switching jobs, went from store manager at advanced to a district manager at autozone so his vacation got all messed up so there seems to be no time for us to get together as he is also 900 miles away. i will get it done and it will be done right. its just taking longer than planned

it was. i have a 14b, 16g and 20g at the moment. i have everything to turbo it, i have so many parts in my basement its sickening. another block, rebuilt cylinder head, injectors, turbos, ECUs, everything is there. just need the time. its not even about buying many parts anymore, its about time and having it reliable still as its my daily.

Im not too sure that you have a fwd 2g exhaust. It doesnt look like FWD. I run a 3'' turbo back exhaust from a 2g and mine goes over the rear sub frame. Yours goes under it like the AWD.
