I decided for my big mod is going to be a rear disc swap. I drums squeak and suck so it's the perfect time.

http://www.esnips.com/doc/07bd031a-7369-4801-9691-0c6f16d9ecf3/Rear-disc-brake-swap-tutorial

This is the tutorial I was reading on how to do the mod. I believe this is the same one from the galant wiki. This tutorial says it involves cutting the backing plates and stuff. I though there was no cutting involved. I though you had to buy backing plates from a galant or an eclipse that had rear discs. Then after that I thought it was all plug and play. Is that true?

I was getting this idea from seeing Greddy's rear disc swap sale that includes everything you would have needed for the swap (which I would have bought if I had 50 posts by that time).

 i see you found my rear disc swap tutorial.
you DO have the buy the backing plates from the donor car. some modification is required. You gotta cut some of the slot were the E-brake cable comes out of.

So even buying the backing plate you still need to modify the plates still? Not what I was hoping to hear lol. Going to be harder than I thought. So the plates that Greddy was selling were premodified, now I'm starting to get it.

Is there any backing plates from a car I could buy that do not involve modifying?

im pretty sure the backing plates from a v6 galant dont need modifying but im not 100% positive.

i'm not sure, i got my set from rez887, which is from a 99 v6.
the hardest part is drilling the hole where the E-brake cable goes...
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u43/run1206/disc%20brakes%20conversion/DrillopenebrakeslotMedium.jpg
and pulling out the cable itself...

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u43/run1206/disc%20brakes%20conversion/EbrakeremovedMedium.jpg

these are the mods i did to my setup, and it's been running perfectly for a few years now. just gotta modify the E-brake cable to fit that whole in the back of the backing plate.

Well I'm more of a bolt on type of guy for mods, meaning I don't like using a dremel and a drill. Anybody selling the backing plates pre-modified? :)

Sure but you have a 94 Galant, is it the same backing plates for the 2001? How much are you looking for?

What else do I need for a complete swap. Calipers, pads, rotors, backing plates, is that it? What about caliper brackets? Do those come with the calipers or do I need to get those from a donor car too?

mko

cmon, ive done the swap a few times on 7g and 8g - the backing plates are the same.

you need calipers that should come with the bracket and rear disks. Also, if youre not going to use SS lines, id suggest buying 2g gst eclipse rear brake line with male ending.

if you need entire swap let me know

I can get you all but disks

I need the entire swap. Without the discs and the pads would be great since I'll probably get those new anyway.

I'll pm you tomorrow with an offer, I need to go to bed. I also got to figure out how much to offer ;) .

Are pbr rotors any good? I'm trying to do this semi cheaply meaning I don't need to have brembo or any high priced item if the cheap item does the job just as good.

i did my swap years ago, before we were able to buy the R1s at that price. :(
but you can buy slotted R1s at that price now, both slotted and drilled is 100 somethin i think

Well I'm about to buy the swap from a fellow member and now I need to pick out some rotors and pads.

http://store.r1concepts.com/Items/Item.aspx?sck=41878275&SKU=emr07965%20-%20121.46047&caSKU=emr07965%20-%20121.46047&caTitle=MITSUB%20GALANT%206/00-01%20V6%20Brake%20Rotors%20-%20E-Line%20-%20Rear

Those look any good? I don't want drilled and slotted right now, I want just some basic rotors. I'll probably upgrade all my brakes to drilled and slotted next year, but not now.

http://store.r1concepts.com/Items/Item.aspx?sck=41878275&SKU=pqr07965%20-%20106.03830&caSKU=pqr07965%20-%20106.03830&caTitle=MITSUB%20GALANT%206/00-01%20V6%20Brake%20Pads%20-%20Posi%20Quiet%20Semi%20Metallic%20-%20Rear

Just some standard pads.

Trying to do the whole upgrade cheap for now :D . I'm planning to upgrade all my brakes to drilled and slotted next year when I have more money and my fronts will need to be replaced anyway then.

can u do the rear disk swap on a I4? cause on r1 the dont have rear disks

brad995
02-01-2009, 02:58 PM
My car is an I4, I'm using the v6 model to pick out rotors because the v6 already have rear disks. If I put in on the website that I had an I4 I would have gotten drums instead of disks.

Yeah you would need calipers and pads too, among other things.

Disc rotors, disc calipers, disc brake pads, rear disc backing plate, and the E-brake line connected to the backing plates (you can cut the old hard line off the donor backing plate; you'll be inserting you current E-brake line into that section)

Sorry to ask a question on someone else's thread, but I thought it would be more convenient that creating a duplicate post on a similar thread.

So, I'm trying to buy the backing plate for the rear disk swap and I found one, but the seller sent me this picture -

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_WKmry7pciLc/SYyE7rXbC9I/AAAAAAAAAK8/4VQuLkoeem4/P1080003.JPG

Now, from what I can see this looks more like the backing plate for the drum brakes. Because run1206's tutorial picture looks like this -

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_WKmry7pciLc/SYyE7mhB6MI/AAAAAAAAAK0/oww0M9MTRj4/preparingtheebrakeleverforcableMedi.jpg

And the Mitsubishi diagram looks like this -

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_WKmry7pciLc/SYyE7Q4mJcI/AAAAAAAAAKs/HXhUYF4yEUA/s576/rear_brake_assembly.gif

Can anyone help me confirm if what I'm trying to buy is actually the drum assembly backing plate? If so I think the seller has got it mixed up.

One more question, will the rear disk brakes from an 02 Eclipse(3G) have any fitment issues on the 8G? Or is it only the 95-99 (2G) eclipse rear brakes that fit on the 8G?

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_WKmry7pciLc/SYyE7rXbC9I/AAAAAAAAAK8/4VQuLkoeem4/P1080003.JPG
my previous drum brakes:

notice they're both perfectly circular and similar components at identical locations...

you do want the backing plate just like the third picture.
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u43/run1206/disc%20brakes%20conversion/preparingtheebrakeleverforcableMedi.jpg

the third pic is the disc brake backing plate, i'd think twice about buying from that seller :?

Very true. I went with someone else from the eclipse rather. When I spoke to the seller, he ended up saying that he only had calipers for the front brakes, even though he's listed them for the rear. Seems like he doesn't know anything for sure. I guess it was a good thing that he sent me the picture though, saved me some money.

Thanks for the information mko and run1206!

yeah, if anything contact rez887; he's the member who usually sells full rear disc brake sets. I got my set from him.

brad995
02-22-2009, 06:49 PM
Well I have the whole set except for rotors and pads which I'll be ordering in a few days. (thanks mko for the set)

My question is about painting and cleaning the calipers. The calipers are dirty and I want to clean them off before painting them. Can I just run them under water or will that hurt them in some way? I'm guessing not because they're going to get wet when you drive in the rain.

Now since they're already off the car I'm going to paint them now. Can I just paint the whole caliper with out masking anything off (including the inside)? Or what do I need to mask off?

Thanks.

When i was doing that i bought one of those black hard foam brushes that attaches to a drill and this thing scrubs the shit out of them. I got it from walmart for 3-4 bucks. then buy a spray can of engine degreaser /walmart again/, let it soak for 5 min, wipe it, let it dry, prime it, and paint it. I didnt mask it tho, never had any problems

can you really feel a difference from drum to disk???

tamim13
03-13-2009, 12:00 AM
The main reason that I'm getting them is to get rid of the rusty and squeaky drums, it's a real eye sore and painting drums never really was my cup of tea. Disks all around just makes the car even all around, I believe, especially if you have replaced your steelies with nice rims.

run1206
03-13-2009, 12:24 AM
about 15% - 20% difference. a lil bit better braking.

yes indeed, i just dud my rear disk swap last week with some cheap brand pads and rotor and i did my SS brake lines in the rear and i feel much more braking power

I'm SO READY FOR RIMS! once i get rims this is the next thing on my to-do list!

brad995
03-13-2009, 06:24 PM
Well I have another question about the difference between the 4cyl and v6 brakes.

Heres my brake setup to begin with:
2001 4cyl DE
rear disk swap with old rotors and pads from my friends 03 Eclipse
stock brake setup in front

Now my question about ordering new rotors and pads. For the rear I know I need to order brake parts for the v6 because of the disks. Do the v6 pads and rotors fit the 4cyl in the front? Or do they need to be made for the 4cyl?

spdracr
03-13-2009, 06:31 PM
they will only fit the front if you have the dual piston calipers and since you don't then you can only fit the stock rotors and pads for now

brad995
03-13-2009, 06:36 PM
So if I upgrade to dual piston calipers I need new rotors? I would like to do that eventually but I'm getting drilled and slotted so I want them to last a long time.

run1206
03-13-2009, 06:38 PM
if you're getting slotted and drilled rotors, the pads might wear down faster

blue8g
03-13-2009, 07:37 PM
yea i'm gonna upgrade to oem disks first then i'm gonna go with brembos or something crazy....

run1206
03-13-2009, 08:07 PM
if you do Brembos, the rims have to be 17" minimum. and you'd have to get either an EVO spare tire, or another 17" spare, our stock spares won't fit :(

blue8g
03-13-2009, 08:10 PM
yeah i intend on going with 17 or 18" forged rims...
