View Full Version : Have you taken out the backing?

I was changing the oil today and I decided to take out the backing that was right behind the vents to see what it would look like and to make it functional. Here are some picture;

Has anyone else did this because I was wondering how does it hold up in the wind and the MAF sensor is a little exposed. Should I worry about this or is it made so that water can hit it but not affect it in anyway?

I also noticed that the response was a little better. The engine did run cooler and sounded a whole lot better.

There shouldnt be any problems. This should be obvious, but dont leave it open in the rain, even though most likely nothing bad will happen to anything. Just a chance that something will rust and look horrible

I was going to cover it back up if it rains but I was thinking if I got caught off guard and did not have the backing on me when it started raining and I could not cover it back up in time.

I was actually thinking maybe I can build something with a clear plastic like luxor or acrylic that I can use to act like the first backing but with the ability so see through it.

When I put my hood on in the spring, I plan on taking the backing off. I'm not worried about the rain. I've hosed down my engine to clean it and never had any problems, so why would the rain bother it?

Hey, Outlaw, since I have my hood packed away, can you tell me if it looks like you can take the mesh out? I want to paint the mesh either beige to match the car or black so it isn't as noticeable.

Yeah it look like you can. There are just tabs that are bent to hold it in place. Later on today I will take pictures of it and post it for you here.

Or you could just mask off the hood and spray paint the mesh. It would be a lot faster I think

I wouldn't do that. If in the off chance you did get some paint on the hood you are going to have one hell of a hard time get the paint off. Depending on if you know what kind of clear coat they used a epoxy, VER, or some kind of resin. You will need a cleaner that will not strip it. If you where wrong on the coat you will end up ruining the hood. I am having a hard time deciding what kind of wax I should use on the hood. If I get the wrong kind it will turn the clear coat yellow.

if you are really worried about ur MAS getting wet, then you might wanna get some sheet metal and build a shield or something for it. another idea is to make a deflector for the air. i mean so that the water can drain somewhere safely but the cabn still cool the motor...

You would worry because Clay's car had problems after a heavy rain once https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif

well not really. first of all clay had problems cuz of the other vent, the one on the side i believe. and yea he did the oem intake mod so the way his filter was and the airbox, it held in the water. DANJ has the aem cai so his filter is lower. and to top things off he has the bypass valve too.

Cool! Thanks man.

Also, like Pinoy said, Clay had his stock airbox flipped and water got caught in there, so the rain shouldn't effect anything that it would touch through those vents. I guess there is really only one way to find out.

Cool, that's exactly what I was hoping to see. My hood is also packed away and at the body shop, I plan on replacing the mesh with black mesh. Man I can't wait. Thanks for putting up the pics Outlawzcc.

Unless you have the flip box mod or a shortram that lines up with the hole there's no way you'll have a problem unless something isn't fitted properly. I have slammed my engine w/ more water than any rain storm could ever deliver while cleaning the engine and it doesn't even acknowledge the water in any way other than to steam a little when you warm it up

I've been looking for some good black mesh, have you seen any? The only pieces I have found would work great for the hood, but are not big enough to fit in the opening of my front bumper I will be putting on. I've been trying to find some nice looking black plastic or vinyl mesh.

Thanks Outlaw for the pics. For some reason, it didn't look like it would be that easy to take off when I peeked behind the shield, when I got the hood.

Thanks Pinoy, but I'm not too crazy about painting the mesh. It will come off, no matter what. I've thought about powder coating it, but that would be expensive. I was just doing a search and found a sheet of black aluminum mesh that might just fit, but it's $50. That's crazy! The mesh that came with my bumper has a black pvc coating, but it looks like chicken wire. I know a long time ago I saw black diamond mesh made out of plastic, kind of like the stuff you see behind some JDM grills, in fact I think Reelax's grill has it.

I am going to try the Foliatec mesh, it's not on their site, but the magazine ads for Ultra Performance list that they carry it. They are the only US dealers I have been able to find. Their webpage is upracing.com, you will have to call to order it.

UPDATE: I just called to order it, they said they are out of black, they told me to call back in one month when they should have more back in stock.

UPDATE:

Try these places:

http://www.pvdnet.co.uk/interior/foliatec.asp ('http://www.pvdnet.co.uk/interior/foliatec.asp') - in the UK, so probably no good for us in the US, but for those in Europe...?

http://www.mmstuning.com/shop/store/comers...?idproduct=716- ('http://www.mmstuning.com/shop/store/comersus_viewitem.asp?idproduct=716-') Really expensive

http://www.globalautoshop.com/accessories/.../mesh_grill.htm ('http://www.globalautoshop.com/accessories/mesh_grill.htm')

http://www.7453217467431.com/browse/brandB...D=1044393044609 ('http://www.7453217467431.com/browse/brandBrowse.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2305175&FOLDER%3C%3EbrowsePath=1334363&FOLDER%3C%3EbrowsePath=1262019&FOLDER%3C%3EbrowsePath=1524119&affID=DFX&bmUID=1044393044609')

I am going to try the last link. They list everything as aluminum, but if you compare the part numbers to those found on foliatec.de, there should eb some black ones there too.

I've seen the Folia Tec mesh before, but it's not wide enough to cover the whole opening in my bumper.

Okay just to give you guys a heads up. Like with any mod you do to the car you will always want to follow up with it and check it within a couple of days to make sure that everything is okay. Well I checked the hood today because one of the things that has been bugging in the back of my mind is how well the hood holds up to the heat that the will be venting from the vents. Well as it turns out not very well. I have a couple of hair line fractures where the vents meet with the grill. So I put the backing back on until I have time to make something that I can see through and still protect the hood. So a word of warning if you do this make sure to check your hood for any fractures.

Jason

You have fractures? Man, that is not good. Your sure it's from the heat coming up from the engine? By the way, what is the backing made out of?

Danger DANJ

What the hell?! You have fractures from the heat? That sucks. I can't believe the shield would make that much of a difference, it's only fiberglass isn't it?

Prophet

I can take pictures so that I can show you guys. Heat is going directly on to the clear coat. It may be a combination of me in the morning when it is really cold and then starting my car and driving. I can actually see the heat rising in the morning up to the top of the other cars around me you know what I mean. The backing is only made of fiberglass but it stops the heat from directly hitting the hood.

Damn, the cold in the morning? And you live in CA, I live in Minneapolis! I guess the backing will stay on for awhile until I move (June) or it warms up.
