hey guys, I am returning here because I have brought home yet another Galant! I wasn't exactly in the market to go and buy a VR-4 but my friend owned this for many years and looked after it well. I had to buy it as there pretty much wouldn't have been another opportunity to get one in this condition ever again. Plus I couldn't bare some dropkick cutting the springs and dumping it on out chrome wheels with a hacked up bumper to fit a massive ugly intercooler etc.

I now own a 4th gen, two 6th gens, and a 7th gen Galant - and have previously owned countless other 6th gens, another 7th gen and two 5th gens too. All I need is 8th and 9th gen Galants and I'm set!

What I have is a near stock standard 1991 E39A JDM Galant VR-4 Evolution - often nicknamed 'Evo 0' or 'Evo Zero' as it was the first Evolution to come before the popular Lancer Evolution series.

In addition to the usual facelift VR-4 extras such as twin pot brakes, it has the same running gear as the rally bred RS model - 510cc injectors, TD05 16G turbo, larger intercooler and piping, 3.909 ratios and 4-bolt rear end, hood vents as well as extra vents on the front bumper underneath the grille.

It is mostly stock other than the boost gauge, fire extinguisher, sound install and leather interior from a JDM Super VR-4.

Wow..that E39a is SUPER clean! So its not a true "RS"...its just got some nice "RS" upgrades?

The last exterior piece I want to put on my GVR4 is the "RS" vented aluminum hood....lucky guy!

It's a genuine Evolution, essentially the road version of the RS, and much rarer than an RS also.

The Evolution shares all the same good bits as the facelift RS - ie those hood vents and all the other RS gear such as injectors, turbos, 4-bolt, 3.909 etc etc.

Not all RS's had those vented hoods whereas all the Evolution models had them.

Also, RS is E38A with no 4WS while mine is E39A with 4WS.

Great looking car for its age! Nice set of wheels would really set it off. I wouldn't change anything else.

Thanks Proto! Moved up to the world of 8G's have we? :P

I think I'm going to just leave it as is for a while. I'm going to blast and powdercoat the original rims (have an extra 5 so will pick the best 4 out of the 9) in perhaps a dark bronze colour or a light silver. I'm a fan of the black with silver lip/edge some VR-4s seem to have.

Yes...I have heard of them the first to be truly badge "Evolution" right before WRC rules and regulation changes to smaller chassis production vehicles to participate in the WRC.

There has been a big debate between E38/E39 Galant VR4 owners and some Evo owners that our GVR4's are the true "EVO 0" but the proof is in the pudding for the model produced like yours named from Mitsu as a "Evolution". Our Galants are simply the precursor to the Lancer Evolution and if the WRC didn't change the rules and regulations it would be Mitsubishi Galant vs. Subaru Legacy to this day instead of the Lancer Evolution vs. Subaru Impreza WRX:cool:

wow so I haven't posted about this car here in over three years. In that time I had moved to Australia to live for two years and now I am here in the UK living here for the next two years! The poor VR-4 is just stored away in my mother's garage and hardly sees the light of day any more :(

Every time I get to NZ I give it a good shake-down though. Not long before I left for Australia I decided to upgrade the OE manifold to a EvoIII one as they flow better, but at the same time I saw damage to the turbo compressor wheel and decided to overhaul the turbo and upgrade the wheel and housing to a 20G unit.

the new setup goes very well and pulled much harder in the midrange and top end and surprisingly not much noticeable extra lag.

as I had two full sets plus a spare of the OE rims I picked out the best four and refurbished them sanding them down and repainting with some clear over top, I think they came out pretty well. I had two sets of center caps too - a set with the logo and a set without.
