OK so many of you already know, but for those of you that don't my distributor went on my 94 es. When the distributor went it cause my timing belt to skip one tooth off to the right. What i am now planning on doing is my 4g64/63 hybrid build. The plan is to get a 1 gen head to do the swap with. I am also not sure on whether i am going to try and get an eprom ecu and rewire it or to just get a stand alone system. Both have their positives and their negatives. I am also going to get 450cc injectors and wire them up along with the resistor pack. I don't have any parts yet. But i have started to tear down the block...Now i am not sure whether i am going to rebuild the head that i am going to get and if i am going to upgrade my pistons. For right now i am going to make the build N/A. Please feel free to give me any suggestions on parts or how to go about this. I am going to do this by the seat of my pants.... That"s how i learn everything that i have ever done.

This is where the plug is in order to lock the balance shaft into place in order to take your timing belt off. I had a tough time locating it so i figured i would post it.

So I decided that I am just going to rebuild the motor to get the car back up and running then I will eventually Turbo the Sohc to get a feel for the tuning aspect...

I Just bought all new valves and they came in on Wens.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/skrap/100_1737.jpg

I had a very tough time putting them in because I couldn't get the C-clamp style spring compressor to work correctly. The Spark plug tubes were getting in the way so that I couldn't get the spring retainers in. SO I went to Sear's and I bought the style that almost looks like a puller. That was also giving me a big hassle because it was hitting the outside wall of my head. I had to Cut certain sections of it off in order to clear the Tubes and the wall of the head... I eventually got them all in though. I also Cleaned up my camshaft with some 400 grit wet sanding... Then I assembly Lubed it all up and slide the camshaft into place... Its a little bit of PITA to get the camshaft in but I eventually got it in. I also replaced the camshaft seal and put the cam Gear on...
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/skrap/100_1739.jpg

I have a quick question though. I bought a master gasket set for the 4g64 and I was wondering if there is a camshaft seal on the distributor side? If there is idk if its in my kit because I couldn't find it..

Today I am going to clean my lifters and hopefully get them assembled ans on to the head. Then after that next is to clean up my cylinder walls and Put the Head back on! I will take more pictures and post them tonight or tomarrow!!!

the distribuor seals that side with an o-ring. so ono, no camshaft seal.

Did you buy new valve seals? did you install new valve guides?

depending on how many miles you have those guides are probably worn, and if you bent valves, I can almost garuntee you have cracs in some of your guides.

If you want your motor to run like new and not smoke or consume oil(provided your bottom end is in good shape) you need new valveseals and guides.
Seals are an absolute must.

I did replace the valve seals but not the guides... They are fine though.. I also did not bend any valves, I just bought new ones because they had a lot of buld up on them and I didnt want to fight cleaning them and then having them not seal correctly because I sanded too much off. The motor has about 180k but everything is in Great shape!

So I finally got the head put back together today and I also cleaned up the Rocker arms, Rocker arm shafts and the valve lashings. It was very tedious work but it was worth it in the end. It pretty much looks brand new!

This is what I did today and I think everything is coming along nicely. I am going to give my G to my G/F for her first car to drive. That kind of made my priorities for this car change a little bit. his means that I am going to put it back together and instead of boosting it and making it a power monster I am going to be Working on the looks of the car. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know because I am not really sure what scheme I am going to do.

did you have your head milled?
do you have new head studs?

11-09-2009, 06:13 AM
No I have not touched the head... I also dont have new head studs.. I understand that they strach but I am limited on my funds right now so I will just tighten them down a lil more than normal and then take my chances....

No I have not touched the head... I also dont have new head studs.. I understand that they strach but I am limited on my funds right now so I will just tighten them down a lil more than normal and then take my chances....

The head studs are stretch to torque. This means that you torque them to a low torque spec in foot/lbs... THEN you use a degree type of torque wrench and you turn them a certain number of degrees to get the stud to stretch to a very specific spec.

Its not that the studs "may" stretch over time. its that they are stretched in order to get the proper torque spec.
with that said, once they have been stretched, you simply cannot re-use then and get any kin of a consistant torque spec out of them.

at this point it doesn't matter how tight you torque them down to because even if you torque every single one of your nuts to 90 ft/lbs, each one of those studs is going to yeild a different clamping pressure.
and your headgasket, especilly without a resurfaced head, will most certainly fail.
this i know.

The Head is in Great shape... It perfectly smooth. Why would it need to be resurfaced if nothing is wrong with it?

So I decided to do some more work today. Leah and I cleaned up some of my accessory brackets along with the intake manifold.
Here are some pics..
Leah scrubbing the intake manifold with a toothbrush:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/skrap/100_1755.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/skrap/100_1756.jpg
We still have A LOT of work to do on the intake manifold!!!!!!

Brackets cleaned and degreased:

The brackets Primed:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/skrap/100_1758.jpg

Now I need some opinions. Which color should I do my engine bay? I am deciding between flat black or gloss black. If anyone has any other suggestions feel free.

So this weekend i did some more work. I cleaned up my block by sanding down the old head gasket and I also blew out all of the old coolant from the water jackets. I have been taking off all of my accessory brackets and degreasing them and painting them. I decided that i will be painting them flat black. Then I will paint my block a gloss black.

This is some of the parts before i cleaned and painted them...

Here are some of them with primer:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/skrap/100_1768.jpg

Here they are painted flat black and then I pulled some more parts and cleaned and primed them.

Here is my before shot of the block:

This is how i looks cleaned. I think it turned out pretty good:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/skrap/100_1774.jpg

I also pulled it back into the garage and took off my front bumper, crash bar and I took my radiator out to give myself some more room to work...

I also just found out what it was that made my timing belt skip in the first place. As some of you may know MKO has been having problems with a hiccup and we thought maybe it was his distributor. Well my distributor went so I had bought a new one... I put it into MKO's car and it was all messed up!! It did the same thing that it did to my car.. So I'm pissed off becasue I spent almost 400 dollars on a distributor that doesn't even work!!!!! I don't know if i am going to be able to return it either because its been like 6 months!!!! Is there any suggestions on how i should handle this??? Also i know it is the correct one for my car because they match up perfectly. I guess they just manufactured it wrong!!... This is so frustrating.... I just cant wait until I get this thing up and running. This will be my first MAJOR project on a car.. I'm excited to see if this will all work out correctly. Oh and by the way I will probably buy new head bolts because I don't want to go through all of this effort and then have it not work!!!!

Ok soo I have a little bit of an update for you guys.. I have slowly been collecting parts for the DOHC swap and turbo.. A major thanks to MKO for keeping my ass on track. So far I have a 2g t head that I am rebuilding I also have the water pipe and the thermostat housing along with the newly aquired gs cam gears and the resister pack.. Thanks again to MKo...

As many of you know I rebuild my sohc because I was just going to get it running again... Well about 3 months ago I bought a 7g for my girl.. I bought it from Mrjaydeeone and he had bought it off eatsleepjdm... So we are keeping it in the TGC family... Anyway I am going to put my rebuilt sohc on that G because the valve seals are completely fried..

I have been having a tough time getting motivated to finish this as of late but I have talked with some people and I think Im ready to get this done!! I have 3 trans's to swap out and then Its time to put my motor back together.. I hope to have my G running by mid summer. I know its a long shot becasue I have alot of work ahead of me but I think I can do it!! I will keep you guys posted withinfo and ALOT of pics!!

P.S. I think I might be the first one to try out MKo's Evo 8 ecu theiry... I hope that it work becasue it will revolutionize our tuning capabilityies!! I am really excited to see how it will work!!

So today I finally motivated myself to go and work on my car a little bit.. Once I got started I just went and Got everything ready for me to pull my trans.. Took all my control arms apart and then I pulled my driver side CV axle. I am leaving my passenger side one in because I pulled my old trans out with it still in and plus its just going to go into Leah's car. I should be able to put the trans in with it still in there but if not then I will just pull it once the trans is out. Now I am waiting to run to Harbor Freight and pick up a new trans jack becasue I broke my old one and I will be doing this all by myself!! YAY for me. Well Ive got some pictures for you guys!

please buy new head bolts. you can get them through a local auto parts store for cheap, you dont need arp studs or anything just need stock ones. I got a set of felpros and i think they where like 80 dollars they have the same rating as arp bolts at way less the coast. torque them to correct specs for the dohc head not the 64 numbers they are different.

1g 12mm x 1.25 threads.
2g/7g 11mm x 1.25 threads.

1g head bolts will not work on a 2g/7g block. When the 1g 6bolt 63t guys use 2g heads, they have to drill the head to fit the 12mm bolts. But when using a 1g/2g DOHC head on a 2g/7g block, I dont think we have to do anything but use the 11mm 1.25 head bolts.

I some Updates.. I have been slowly collecting parts to do the dohc swap....(Big thanks to MKO). I have a couple more things to get and then its time to get started.. I got a 1G head that I finally dissassembled over the weekend and cleaned up. It looks in really good shape. Surprisinly the valves in the 1G head have less carbon buildup then the ones i pulled off my sohc... I am waiting on my buddy to get some free time in his shop do I can use his glass beader to clean it up more... Hopfully this thing will be running soon but Its going to be a long long road...
I also think I am going to attempt to be the first one running an evo 8 ecu... shall be interesting.. lol I will keep you guys posted and also try and get some pictures of my new toys!!

I haven't really worked on my car too much as of late but I had some time to give her on Sat night so i decided to finally pull the motor and trans out. I didn't have a cherry picker so it was a little challenging but me and a buddy got everything pulled out of the engine bay in about 2 hrs. I was also going to put it on the engine stand last night but for some reason the bolts for the block were not long enough to work with the engine stand (thanks Mitsu!). Today I woke up and MKO came down and we started searching for bolts that would work and we finally got 3 of the 4 bolts so we got it up on the stand.. Then we started to disassemble the Bottom end. Everything was in fairly good shape just really dirty. We cleaned everything thing up at a special degreaser and it was amazing because everything came out looking like it came strait from the factory!! I need to replace my crank bearings because they are shot. We also had to hone out the cylinder walls because of the surface rust that had started to build up. That also means that I will be needing to buy new piston rings. We also went ahead and Cross-hatched the cylinder walls.. The break in period is going to suck when I get this motor back together but I am glad we decided to break it all down because of the crank bearings being shot. We also did the balance shaft delete on the crank case. We just cut them both. The pistons are in pretty good shape but I am concerned about the rod size because they look kind of small. Also I am debating on whether to get 8G pistons to lower my compression ratio.

Here are the pictures from today"s progress:

Jeez man, idk looks like you are in over your head. Its going to take a lot of paddling to get yoru car back in one piece at this point.

There's no way your deck is still true. Just from a pic it looks uneven. Idk looks like you polished it up or something. I'd take it to a shop and have them resurface it as well as have your cylinders properly bored and honed. I'd make sure you stick with a thick composite gasket if you leave it alone.
See what I worry about for you is that once you get everything finally back together you are going to have problems galore.
Looks like you used that steel wool drill mandrel for cleaning up the front case. I wouldn't be too confident that your front case won't leak now.

Thats what I worry about for you: leaks of all kinds. There are a friggin thousand things to go wrong. Do it once, do it right.

Anyways, good luck man. You really need to get this running. The longer it sits the more problems you are going to have. Things have a way of failing when they sit. Like power steering rack main seals, brake master cylinder seals, clutch master and slave etc etc. Factor in how old our cars are... and you can have a headache that never ends if you don't stay ahead.

That brush wheel somehow got into the picture. We did the block on the outside with it. Id never use that on aluminum parts

The front case( and everything else) was cleaned with the chemical mentioned above. I didnt even touch it. Just spray and rinse

I understand your concern. I am not really too worried about leaks as much as I am the deck.. Its is somthing that I really have to think about and I might just put it all back together and pray it doesnt leak.. Like mko said I am using a composite gasket. The issue right now is that I need to get this thing running and asap because This will start to fall apart.. Allthough the whole time it has been off the road It has been in the garage.. We just moved it out. Money right now is a problem for me with the baby on the way.. In all honestly I think I am going to try and see if its leve myself and take my chances.. If things work out great but if they fail then its back to the drawling board.. Hopfully it wont fail right away soo I can get my other parts moving.. LOL
PS- I cant just steal leah's motor if this one blows! HAHA dont tell her I said that though :)

OK guys so we cleaned up the block and painted it. I think it turned ok but the paint dulled out really funky for some reason. I also took a strait level to check and see whether the deck was good. IMHO i think it looks pretty decent. I also check the head and that's strait too.

Its nice seeing the love from my fellow TGC brothers... I guess its because I don't have an 8G.

yea its def cuz we dont have 8gs. 8g build threads that are complete jokes get more comments.

dont worry, when your car rolls out, people will respect it.

i take it those a 3g lifters, what else is on the way?

what we mean is look at everything on here, 8gs with tinted tails and stock everything with some 18s get better reviews and in COTM my JDM converted, 5 speed swapped and rear disc swapped galant lost to basically stock 8gs.

7G til the end

I agree with that, I feel like you should have won by now, I've voted for you several times in fact, however in the case of this specific thread I see a pile of parts but nothing done to the car, I'm not trying to be negative, just realistic, notice when you did stuff to your car galanttuner I came and commented on your car. I'm done with the OT, sorry skrap, best of luck, post pics once you get some stuff installed.

Oh yea it will be running. the photoshoot will be coming also. Yes they are 3g lifters. that is also a 94 gs ecu. I just got my SAFC II in the mail yesterday. The reason why there is nothing don't to the car yet is because im currently dropping the 5speed out of my girls G and swapping in an auto so I can take the 5speed.. As soon as that's done my car goes into the garage.

Greddy its nothing personal but if you look at the 7G build threads compared to the 8G build threads the 7G's get no recognition. I was just stating a known fact. It sucks but it is what it is. you may post in our Threads but 75% of the members on this board ignore us....

You're going turbo, correct? Why not use the evo 8 ecu?

you have to swap the entire wiring harness since you're giving her the auto?

I like all those goodies Nice way to free up a manual. I bet the crank spacer is easier to put on then take off.

both cars were auto and the silver galant was swapped to manual by sleeper vr-4, Ans since he has a 94 and the silver galant is 96, we have to keep his harness in order to use the GS ECU

I am eventually going to do that but I got the Gs ecu for a deal. Another reason why im not doing that yet is that its never been done on a 7G before and I would like to make sure the car runs and everything before I take on that milestone.

The crank spacer for the auto is already out. It actually wasn't as hard as people mad it seem. I knew that I was going to reuse it so I didn't beat on it. What I did is packed a ton of petroleum jelly in and found a socket that fit in there perfect and hit it with a hammer and repeated that process about 8 times. What it did is filled the tiny space behind the spacer and kept packing it in there moving the spacer out. It was tedious and messy but it worked alot better than welding and that big mess.
