So, I've had my car since January 2007 and finally decided to go ahead and make a thread for my car now. So this is it...

Currently undergoing a forged and boosted 6G74 build. It was the first completed 6G75 swap, which took place on Memorial Day 2010 and 5-Speed M/T swapped since January 2010.

Here is the overall duration of my ownership so far. Car is bone-stock 99 GTZ I purchased from my aunt after I totaled my Taurus, since she was purchasing a new vehicle, it worked out perfect.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u215/Rodrigoflip/010507.jpg

A few months later I was going at it, looking for anything with chrome or woodgrain, and was looking to do an audio/video setup.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u215/Rodrigoflip/040307.jpg

Got into a little accident with a Caravan in June 07. This is after picking half the bumper off the ground.
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u215/Rodrigoflip/0619071135.jpg

Temporary fix that happened to be in the trunk of the car when I bought it.
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u215/Rodrigoflip/0619071513a.jpg

This past spring I was getting more than sick of seeing the bra on the car. Plus I decided to get white wheels when my tastes started to change.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u215/Rodrigoflip/041708002-1.jpg

Started the teardown to get the front end fixed finally, and painted the core support flat black behind the grille and lower bumper opening.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u215/Rodrigoflip/06-16-08_2025-2.jpg

Re-installed the original bumper with the new upper support temporarily to make sure the support would take care of the bumper being shifted an inch sideways.

Dropped the front and soon after installed the Mugen Lip. But this is where I'll end this.

How is your build coming along anyways man? I am suppose to be making a trip back to Mn to visit some friends in September, the fiance wants to hit the Mall of America (of course lol), we will have to meet up if everything plays out with my build in time.

M-Rod

It's been going pretty slow the past few months with me moving from Nebraska to Minnesota almost 3 months ago and have not been working since until this past week. And with getting a job at CarQuest, I should be able to start reeling in parts as the discounts on them and through our machine shop should be very generous. I'm hoping to have the engine machined and assembled sometime by Winter.

How she's sitting under the hood for now. Replaced all 6 spark plug tube seals and decided to throw on a different valve cover. Also did a little cleaning while it was apart. Either way better than it was before.

I just used Krylon flat black. I doubt it will hold up well, but it's only temporary since I plan on using my 99-style valve cover for my engine swap.

Oh ok. I like that scheme. I will probably try that same color down the road.

no clearcoat? cause I actually used krylon flat black on my grill, along with no-glass clear coat, and its still a little shiny

M-Rod
07-30-2009, 10:42 PM
No clearcoat. Maybe I'll just go back and mask everything off and give it a coat or 2, but I didn't have any laying around and wanted to get it done before it started raining.

Good news though. I should be getting my mirror, grille, and trunk garnish painted possibly this weekend. Still have to get a spoiler and new bumper though. But I'm really stressing to get this thing looking at least somewhat decent for the All-Mitsu Cookout in 3 weeks.

nice i've been wanting to do that...Did you wire the positive wire the fuse block on the battery and negative to the trunk?

M-Rod

Yes exactly. The positive cable is just extended to the trunk, and the ground is now behind the seat.

blue8g
08-12-2009, 06:13 PM
sorry for the n00b question but what do you have to do to move the battery to the trunk...i've been wanting to do this for a while

M-Rod
08-12-2009, 06:28 PM
Run 4 gauge or better cable from the engine compartment to the trunk for the positive. Hook up a new ground cable in the trunk. Then have a box secured into place so it is in its own compartment and that will prevent it from moving while driving as well.

EDIT: Quick update, put a new air filter as well since my original had fitment issues with the headlight. Now the piping sits down where it should.

Yeah somehow on the Galant end, quite a bit more space under the hood. And my strut bar barely clears. Literally it does by only a hair.

Adrian, here is the link to my photobucket folder with the vacuum and electrical routing I used.

Made a stop at the junkyard today to find something for my dad's truck and stumbled across a few decent finds. Infiniti Q45 throttle body and 6G74 Diamante throttle body. The Q45 throttle body will eventually find it's way onto my car, but will not even be considered until my 6G74 is built and complete next spring.

Are you building the block tor turbo or N/a?

Ok cool, if you are staying N/a you could easily use the stock 74 rods instead of dropping the cash on a set of the 3sx ones. There are a lot of guys running those rods on full N/a built blocks and some pushing boost to them still.

You have any goal for HP to the wheels for the build?

True, it seems the 74 rods hold up fine to decent power, but I still plan on going turbo eventually and figure I might as well get the rods while I have the chance.

My WHP goal realistically is in the 240-250 range. I'm not really sure what to expect yet.

And I just noticed the XG350 mani was for sale and sold quick. Unfortunate timing. Though I have no idea what price you had on it, I would have taken that thing off your hands in a heartbeat! Those runners would have come in handy. I just have to cross my fingers and find one at the junkyard during the next few months.

You should easily hit that Hp range just N/A even man...boost will easily put you into the 300+range. The intake didnt last very long at all, but like I said in that thread if I come across one I will shoot it out to you right away.

Just a little bit of what's been going on lately. The headers didn't get installed like planned. I looked around under the car the day after receiving them and noticed I would have to remove the catalytic converter and purchase a section of exhaust pipe and weld flanges on each end. Being late in the year and running out of time, I decided against it until the 6G74 is ready to drop in. Which leads me to the next thing. The 6G74 block and crankshaft were brought to the company machinist yesterday and have been fully inspected and are fine. The block has been hot tanked and the cylinders have been freshly honed. Bearings and piston rings have been ordered as well. I cannot wait to have this back in my possession and get it put back together. Pictures will be up as soon as I get it back.

yeaa! five speed wooooh!

You know it! All I have left to locate are the cables, passenger side intermediate shaft, clutch slave cylinder, and the transmission itself. I still have some time to get this all together since I won't have my engine built for another 2-4 months and I want to drop it in all at once. So far the total cost of 5-speed swap related parts is $50, and here is today's pick-up.

I have an extra slave cylinder if you end up needing one. Also, if you go to my build thread, you can see total cost for everything I've done.

Oh I also have an extra stock flywheel, extra shifter cable brackets, and a brand new clutch disk (Exedy OEM style) but you're probably gonna want something more than that LOL

M-Rod
12-20-2009, 10:53 PM
Thanks for the offer, but I'm thinking I'll just buy a new slave cylinder at work since I can get one for a decent price. Though I am curious as to which shift cable brackets you are talking about, but I will most likely wait and see if I get the brackets when I end up finding cables.

beam514
12-20-2009, 11:18 PM

The 5-speed swap is in progress now that I have everything as of this weekend. The interior work is complete and the front end is torn apart. Unbolting the auto transmission is the next step, sometime within the next few days when I have time.

If this were facebook I would like this post.

This swap was supposed to be quick lol. Mainly because it's in a friend's garage using his wife's parking spot. We were expecting it to be done in a weekend, but ran into some issues. The new plan is to be finished completely tomorrow once I pick up a spindle from the junkyard so we can get the passenger side front end put back together. Started it up last night and everything seems to be working. Shifts through the gears just fine. I'm getting anxious to take it for the test drive tomorrow. If only the streets weren't covered in ice from the freezing rain. Ugh.

The interior looks good.

Sorry to hear about the damn coolant leak, i've been riddled with them the last couple months, and it seems this platform has problems with them. First it was my top radiator hose on the engine side, replaced that and then the bottom one started leaking on the engine side. Got mad and then the top one started leaking again.... :(

Shit pisses me off, oh and the Eclipse was leaking at one of the heater core hoses. SO i tore the engine bay apart, replaced them, done a coolant flush, and now the heater core is semi-clogged. Blows cold on the driver side and warm on the passenger side.

I give the F*** up. Good luck with fixing yours and I love your car :D

Lucky for me, it won't be hard at all to fix. That sucks to hear about the reoccurring problems you keep running into. It didn't sound all that bad until reading about the heater core. Have fun with that one. Mitsubishi wasn't really thinking when they designed the heater core placement on this platform, though you will learn a lot in the process.

At the same time that mitsu did us no favors with the heater core location, there are quite a few cars that you have to rip out the dash to get to it

M-Rod

I'm doing what I can Matt. I've been feeling kind of sick lately, so I've been slacking pretty badly. It never came with the cover, which is fine with me, so my original 72 valve covers are going on once it's in.

Also working some minor things out and now have all the accessory brackets and tension pulleys I need from my donor 74. If it hasn't been confirmed already, the P/S pump bracket and P/S belt tensioner from the 74 are direct bolt-on and line up perfect on the 75.
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u215/Rodrigoflip/downsized_0525002051.jpg

Last but not least, I came across a small detail for anybody looking to do this swap while keeping their A/C in tact. Look closely at the bracket I'm holding from the 74, and the one from the 75 which is bolted to the block already. There are 2 places for bolts which stick out and cause the A/C compressor bracket to not sit flush (one high, and one low). I either recommend switching to the 74 bracket while the timing belt is out, or grinding down the 2 bolt holes which cause the interference.

Emanage or Ecu Swap that thing now man.

The AFR may be ok for a short time, but the igniton timing on the 75 is way different than what the 72 ECU is running (ie may be seeing a lot of knock).

Good job getting this done though man, curious also why you swapped in the Diamante manifold over the 75?

beam514
05-31-2010, 07:26 PM
Is one of them mivec??

Why cant you run the 75 or 74 injectors

6G74 comes in either SOHC or DOHC (I think)
6G75 can come in either SOHC or MIVEC (I think.. again haha)

For both swaps, the SOHC is the easiest swap. And I can't run the 74 injectors because my ECU won't realize that it is running larger injectors. This means that it would be supplying the same amount of electrical current to the injectors to inject what it THINKS (and calculates based on injector size saved in the ECU) is the correct amount of fuel, when in reality it will be injecting a lot more fuel than necessary. My 1999 ECU is not flashable, therefore I can't go into it to edit the injector scaling.

SPD_FRK

the 6g75 is available as a Non-MIVEC or MIVEC unit, M-rod is running the non-mivec unit.

With either injector choice, and no tune it wouldn't matter what injectors are used honestly.

Thanks! I have to say, you guys were a big help in making this happen. Adrian and Matt both, as well as BJ. Both of you paved the way into making this a reality.

I went with the Diamante mani since it has the bracket for the throttle cable, plus it has the mounting points on the side for my sensors and solenoids.

I really don't plan on driving it much until it's tuned due to the fact I have no idea where my AFR's are at, as well as my knock count, but I do have to say it is a blast to drive. The extra power and torque are definitely noticeable even while taking it easy, and it sounds mean. I've only put about 50 miles on it this afternoon, but it feels great. Definitely worth the time and money so far.

Ok, that makes sense wth the manifold choice.

Once you get the timing and fuel maps set you will certainly notice how much power is there. You probably have a decent "feel" for it now, but getting the ignition timing set itself should make a big difference.

Installed my Prothane motor mount inserts this past Sunday. They sure make one hell of a difference. Funny to think I can actually get some traction with FWD. Launched a few times and made a few runs with the 1/4 mile GPS-based app on my phone.

If anybody has a Palm phone, it's worth checking out this app. Distances and speed are both pretty damn accurate from what I've seen even during regular driving. Now I'm hoping it's close to accurate while using it for it's "intended purpose." I'll find out when I get to the track Sunday the 11th, if I'm really running high 13's.

So today I was at the Car Craft Summer Nationals at the MN State Fairgrounds. It was a pretty good time, didn't do much other than sit around and check out some of the cars in the area where mine is parked, but I'll be there tomorrow again since entry is for the whole weekend and I just may finally get it on the dyno. Anyway, here are a few pictures of the car from today.

Damn dude, you really need to figure out something soon. You have been driving this thing for a long time without a tune. I am sure that what I am about to say speaks for others as well, but for your sake I really hope you dont blow this motor man.

M-Rod

Just got off the dyno and put down 214.78whp and 225.84wtq. The dyno sheet and vids should be up later on this evening when I get home. All I can say is the torque curve is amazing and pretty much just a flat line in the 210's and 220's.

beam514
07-18-2010, 03:56 PM
dang that's pretty good for no tune. So the mods would be 6G75 swap, 5 speed swap, headers, intake, catback?

M-Rod

Yeah pretty much. Except the catback. It's just a 3G GT OEM muffler.

He can get baseline dynos without any type of tuning whatsoever.

It was definitely a good mini-meet. The races were great!

Which leads me to this, tonight's purchase. 2001 Galant ECU. Time to figure things out and get this swapped in so I can flash to a proper tune. Let the ROM headache begin.

Asus or gateway would have been a better pick as far as reliable goes.

Keith, I know there are much better, but I wanted something very lightweight and extremely portable for the car. That way I can stash it under the seat when not in use. It's hard to pass up a laptop for $249 brand new when it's just an extra one for the car.

awd would be killer but it's not happening. Just going to get another f5m51. It was going to storage next week which is unfortunate. I'm just not in the mood to work on it anymore this year so when it comes back next spring I'll get it back in shape.

Im not entirely convinced that it would be a problem with not changing the fluid. A friend and I just changed all my fluids 3 weeks ago in the 5spd Stratus and im pretty sure it was the original fluid. It was BLACK, looked horrible. Surprisingly the car still shifted pretty good but was unexplainable on how much better it shifted afterward.

I'm not in a rush to get it fixed since the season here is pretty much done anyway. First thing in the spring I'll tear it apart and find out what went wrong since I'm curious myself.

Adrian, I think the '99 ECU is flashable. I ran a test write the day before I popped the tranny and ecuflash acknowledged "OK" across the board during the test write. The only problem is nobody has developed the correct file for it to go in the rommetadata folder yet. The 01 ECU has one developed though.

I wonder if you grenanded the Diff possibly...

The 5spd trans is pretty damn solid, nothing o really worry about except the stock Diff. The gears and majority of the hard parts on the V6 5spd is identical to the internals of the Evo, that should give some of you an idea on the strength of these things.

It would be a good thing to tear the trans apart when you get it out and see what exactly broke.

M-Rod
09-23-2010, 09:49 AM
that's about all I think it would be. I'll just have to find out in the Spring since I've put the car away for now. Besides, I've decided rather than just throwing another tranny in there, I might as well do it right and go with an LSD.

M-Rod
10-31-2010, 07:00 PM
A few minor things. JDM handles and a Hurst pistol-grip. The car may be stationary, but the shifter handle has such a solid feel. I'm looking forward to Spring already.
