The car has been through many changes, and I have taken pictures of everything. It is my daily driver and my project, and it is really hard to modify it this way .For some it may be annoying, for some it may be fun. I hope you enjoy it!
This is how my car looked when I first took it home back in 2006/winter/ - just another galant on the street. That didn't work out for me very well; having experience in painting and detailing cars, some basic knowledge of mechanics I can proudly say that my car hasn't been in shop for any repairs. So here we go:

Drivetrain - 5 spd swap was scheduled for December 7th 2008, and I have all the parts for it. It will be nothing special: 7g galant manual transmission, Exedy clutch, fidanza flywheel, SS clutch line.
Powertrain - for an exception of the air filter, and header and exhaust, nothing was done, because it was still auto. I needed a few more parts to finish the parts list and go for the installation. It will be pretty basic blow thru setup - GM MAF w/ translator, 16G turbo, Bullseye hot side, Evo 3 O2 housing, 3'' downpipe, 2.5'' intercooler piping, 1g Eclipse BOV, Aeromotive FPR. It will be running 8-10 psi on stock motor.

Well, I was officially 5 spd swapped. It took 14 hours of non stop work of me and Bronxbomr . I think it went good, although we had a small problem with the master cylinder - it took only 6 hours to figure it out. Car was running, but I was having some issues with adjusting the clutch pedal. I think the master cylinder that i bought off Advanced auto parts wasnt not doing its job; I don't have pics of the work, but ill post some of finished job later

I did some work these days. Replaced the factory water temp gauge with Prosport gauge. I needed to trim the rear of the cluster to accommodate the deep gauge /never seen such a deep gauge/. I made the temp sensor adapter which will be fitted in the lower thermostat hose. Welded 1 1/4'' exhaust pipe and M8 x 1.00 nut together. NOw I have give it a coat or two of high temp paint.

On other note, I got these babes and just ordered the rotors from R1 Concept, so sometimes next week Ill have the 4-piston calipers installed. The rotors are 12.4'' /314mm/ in diameter vs. Evo ones that are 12.6'' /320mm/. When finances allow Ill get the 2-piston Evo rear calipers with 10.8'' rotors

Good work, lots of pics... Keep it up!
So I got the 510cc dialed in with the MAFT and i get something very odd - under acceleration in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear I get knock when the AFRs are in the 12-10.0s. i just dont get it. Right now the fuel pressure is set to 50 psi.
I read an article about injector latencies and I think the ECU keeps the injectors open for too long since its set for 275cc.
Any advice would be appreciated it.

How much boost you are running? Which DOHC head are you using? Your ecu is eprom, you can have it socket and run an Evo 3 maps.
no boost for now. just trying to get the MAFT dialed in with 510cc. I havent swapped the ECU yet, but that will be done very soon. As soon as im done with the GS ECU on SOHC head, Ill swap the 1g head with cyclone intake.
Since I bought many gauges /I got a deal/, I needed to come up with a spot to place the important ones like AFR and Boost. So, I came up with this:

Those are some nice rotors man, just hope you don't mind changing brakes out more frequently. There are two designs for slotted rotors, the diamond cut (like those you have) and round cut like powerstop and many others. The diamond edges cut into the pads a lot more and ultimately reduce the pad life...if its not a daily driver you will be fine, but something you should know for the future at least.
Thanks for the info. Yeah, i dont mind changing pads. Right now i have drilled and slotted rotors with my dual pistons and i havent changed the pads in 2 years, and they are not even half way worn out

But seriously, much respect. Car has come aloing nicely. Im liking the 8G spoiler on here too. Creative, the EVO spoiler is a lil too much IMO. Not a fan of the wheels tho, some EVO wheels would look tits on here, or another nice set of 17"s. But at any rate cant wait to see the finished product! GL :)

OK, its on. Got the lil stuff all fixed and its working now. I still have to figure shit out with the AFR at idle. I started with less than 1psi and now its running at 4 psi at full boost. Ill play with it some more these days. The AFRs go down to mid 11s at full boost, cruise is at 14.5-15, idle at 17.5. Its fully spooled at 3500 rpms
Galant306m
10-12-2009, 07:33 PM
where is your wide band O2 located? If it is to close to the turbo you will get a false reading because of the heat. You want to keep it behind the cat, or test pipe if you don't have a cat, heat is down and it will be a better reading.
Oh no. Wideband is always before cat, always. The cat will give you lots of false readings. Usually for DSMs the bung is welded 18'' from the turbo. Right now mine sits 2 inches away from the oil pan drain bolt
seth98esT
10-12-2009, 07:39 PM
You dont need it behind the cat. You want it between the cat and downpipe elbow. If you cant hit a full 8psi, then you have a boost or vacuum leak. Run a boost leak test, fix your leaks, see where your AFRs are at then.
I havent pushed it Seth, Id rather go 1 psi at the time. Im running 4 psi right now, Ill try it to 5-6 tomorrow. But Ill do boost leak test as soon as I can.

Well, car has been running good at 5 psi. Im afraid to go higher with the boost, cuz i dont know whats the condition of the head gasket. Anyway it has to go soon, cuz the DOHC head is almost ready. Cuz im broke right now, I wont be buying new 3mm port lifters, and will be using the old ones. Followed some cleaning techniques on VFAQ and pumped out all the old oil. Right now they are soaking in Seafoam and Acetone mix and tomorrow Ill let them dry and prime them with oil .

Next on the list is the FIAV/IAC. Well the FIAV block off plate worked great for the summer and its getting really cold at night, so Im having trouble keeping it idling in the morning. It takes around 5 min to make it idle on its own, so Im not happy with it.
This is another block off plate, but partial one - only for the FIAV. The IAC ports are opened and I will see how it works tomorrow.

MKO great work! how dose the 5psi treat you so far ??
btw this might be a silly Q but by what means are you using for cooling the 16g???
It means that Mitsu turbos are oil cooled and water cooled. Since we dont have the additional nipples on the thermostat housing to feed the coolant and the nipple on the water pipe to drain the coolant from the turbo, we use the throttle body water lines for that reason.
Galanttuner10
10-20-2009, 09:30 AM

I Had the new injector clips installed and tucked the wiring away and It looks really nice/Phizz/ while Skrap sealed the oil pan. Its all good now, just need to install the SAFC and tune the car, cuz Im still having problems with the AFRs at idle /too lean/ and richen up the top end a litttle more.

Very Clean MKO, After looking at your J-pipe again, I notice your missing a fan in the location.
Are you still running AC? or is the fan on the oposite side? Mine looks the same except my pacesetter manifold melted my only fan a little.

The injectors have 2 wires - a power line with constant +12V and a signal wire. For my car the power wires were black, but It may differ thru the years. So, you mark 2 inches after the clip and cut the power wires for all injectors. Then all the wires at the harness side have to be spliced all together and then connected to the thickest wire of the resistor pack. The resistor pack has 4 more wires coming out, these wires need to be spliced with the 2 inch short injector wires

Well, my j-pipe was designed for SMIC and the way it came down, it was pointing towards the transmission. So, I cut if off and put that coupler with 2.5'' aluminum pipe that I had laying around, but that pipe didnt clear the fan so it had to go. The AC doesnt work, but that fan turns on with the main fan and I can notice it takes a little longer for a single fan to cool down the engine temps. When I get a new J-pipe designed to FMIC Ill install it back and do the fan control bypass.

once you set the timing, the marks will line up fine. The fact that they don't line up is a good thing. Makes it easier to set the timing. That's why yiu put the belt on a 1/2 tooth off. Once its tensioned the belt draws the marks together.
You mean half a tooth the way it is now, or I have to turn the exhaust cam half a tooth past the intake mark to the right

i recommend once you get the head on and the timing set, rotate the engine a couple time and check the torque on the cam cap bolts. you will be suppressed when you do.
Yeah, i was gonna do that since im reusing the old bolts. If they were new the torque spec is 14-16 lbs

yea even if they where know i would still recommend it just because of the spring tension on the cams, i checked mine and a couple where loose had to re torque them.
If you start from the caps in the middle and work your way out, by the time you get the most outer ones, the middle ones will become loose. I went over all of them like 3 times, they should be good

IDK what is wrong with this car. Now I cant boost much. It goes to 2 psi max. I even bypassed the MBC and ran the line from the j-pipe to wastegate and still the same. My girlfriend filled me up with 87 while I was paying inside the gas station, I hope this is why i cant boost.
I still have the hiccup and it gets no better. Ive tried everything possible. My AFRs are normal, but my spark plugs are white. It acts like a post MAS leak, but Ive checked it all.
Im about to put my stock MAS and just run the SAFC.

What do you mean by "hiccup"? If I where you I would run a coil ignition setup from a spyder 4g64 you keep the dist there for the cas and then wire the coils up, betting you are not getting a strong enough spark from the dist
Very soon. Im waiting on Kolio to get back to me about a GS harness, and as soon as i get it, it will be done
So, I did a few things today. I was trying to eliminate things one by one on top of what Ive done so far.
Switched back to my OEM fuel filter /brand new/ and filter to rail line, installed different TB and just in case I switched to 510cc. Well, the thrill of 510cc acceleration felt nice, but my hiccup problem still persist, and its driving me crazy.
Things Im doubting that might be the problem:
Aeromotive FPR, distributor and HG.

I forget, did you change out the coolant sensor? If it only happens in closed loop, seems like the o2 sensor, tps, or ECU. You said you already replaced the o2 sensor, I think the tps too? The coolant sensor would be something I'd try replacing too.
I dont see it being the dizzy though, I would think the problem would exist no matter the throttle and it would be worse under boost.
Yes, o2 sensor, coolant temp sensor, I went thru 3 TPS's
Ill try the ECU at least thats easy and the MPI relay
Changed the ECU today.....same shit, no difference. Skrap went to switch his "brand new" distributor that didnt work with another one, so we tried it on my car and we found out the "new" one we got has misaligned rotor

SO SO SO, I got it fixed. OMG what a relief.
well the MAFT needs a RPM signal so u can tune with the knobs for low, mid and wot, but I dont use it since I have the SAFC do the fine tuning
Anyway, I had the wire tapped in the distributor for RPM signal, and soldered there. i was playing with it today and wiggled the 2-pin plug and it kind of did the hiccup, so I was like hmm and pulled that wire off and tada. so the MAFT was stealin the signal form the ECU to the distributor - making it weak enough to trip the power transistor shut meaning that the level of the incoming signal was so low that the power transistor wasnt able to open at times....doing the hiccup. Thats why it was quiet, and not like a misfire sound /pop/
Back on track!

Nice work so far. I like the 8g spoiler on the 7g. Any chance you can post up some detail shots of how you modded your front bumper cover for the IC? I'm struggling with finding a nice clean way to get good airflow to mine. I'm thinking I'll get the 7gB front cover and trim it but don't know how to roll the edges around on the plastic so it looks stock (I know heat doesn't work.)
All i have pix of is my old bumper.
How it started:
http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af184/mko1234/DSC000331.jpg
http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af184/mko1234/DSC00033.jpg

http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af184/mko1234/meet10-19-2008010copya.jpg
It worked for the IC, but I wanted my car to be a bit more stealthy, so i got new bumber and started all over with smaller IC. Trimmed the middle duct so it doesnt rub against the IC, then I cut the upper end of the duct as straight as possible. Then where I had a straight cut line, measured 1 inch above and cut another straight line and removed that piece. The first piece I cut that had part of the duct, i screwed it down with small screws and pieces of strapping line the way i wanted it, and on the back of it I use 3 plies of fiberglass cloth and resin . Edges were rounded with fiberglass cloth and resin and then fiberglass bondo to smooth everything out.

Magnus makes that p&p 1g in 2g cas harness. Which is nice. Wiring it up is a lot cheaper though and easy to make look factory. But P&P is painless.
IDK if you've been to their site lately.. but dude they make some pretty breathtaking shit anymore.
have you seen the rear subframes they make? Talk about holy shit.
Yeah, they got some crazy shit going for DSMs and Evos.

Yeah, the AWD is a blast in the snow. The mechanical bits really aren't all that bad to work out. You'll need a transmission with t-case, factory drive shaft to rework, rear end, gas tank and custom exhaust. I'd guess around $1k for good parts. You can always hit me up with any questions you have.

I would love to go awd. After seeing esclipsh do it, it makes it seem sooo much less complicated than I thought it would be. It honestly just comes down to me finding a source for all the parts, and having the cash to jump on it when the opportunity arises. It really wouldn't cost much more than building a fwd tranny with an LSD. And then you can factor in all the FWD specfic parts that you can sell to recoupe the loss; such as fwd flywheel, tranny, fwd turbo downpipe, fwd exhaust, fuel pump, rear sway bar. maybe some other things idk.
Lol maybe next summer i'll do it.

On a side note:
I came across something that might help you 96-98 guys who want to do the DOHC swap with 1g head. Its a cool thing I got off 97 Sonata with 4g63.
As you know you the 1g intake manifold doesnt have the MAP sensor since its not OBD2 compliant and many of you have avoided it for that reason only. Theres an adapter sold, but first its expensive and second it doesnt look too good. Well heres the solution:
As I said it came off 97 Sonata and its a part made by Mitsubishi:
http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af184/mko1234/HPIM0833.jpg
http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af184/mko1234/HPIM0836.jpg
http://i1006.photobucket.com/albums/af184/mko1234/1g2gheadswap1lg.jpg
Excuse my drawing on that photo. it was for a some knuckle head on another forum who was trying to tell me that 2g have MAFs not MAPs.
So installation is simple as this: the plug is P'n'P and all you need to do is to source a vacuum to the hose.Done!!
I got this MAP of the j/y for $1.50. I told them it was a solenoid.

So there's a hole and screws mount to install that map on a 1g intake? What is installed there originally and why couldn't you reuse a map from the galant?
nope, sorry theres no such a hole for a MAP on 1g intake mani and since theres no hole you have to buy the adapter which is twenty some dollars or use the sonata MAP sensor
Just bought this:

there's no MAP sensor on the 1g or 2g or 3g or 4g
its called a MDP
manifold differential pressure sensor.
all it does it verify EGR function. by looking for a Difference in Manifold Pressure when the egr is open or closed.

my ARP head studs are part#207-4203 and my main studs are your part number i see there on the box.
Snagged this brand new 90 deg 3'' bend from the junkyard for $5. It was off brand new pacesetter exhaust. This will be my new full 3'' downpipe and full 3'' turbo back exhaust

if you buy eagle or manleys and a couple others they come with ARP rod bolts. what are the future plans here?
Well the plan is:
8g crank knife edged and micro polished
Eagle Rods
Manley or Wiseco pistons /still debating on the CR 8.5 or 9 to 1/
ACL bearings
ARP hardware kit
OEM Gasket
The cheap version of it:
my 7g crank
Evo8-9 Rods
Manley or Wiseco pistons
ACL bearings
ARP hardware kit
OEM Gasket
In addition I have a LSD transmission, still have to do the balance shaft deletion and buy a 6 bolt crank pulley. i read they are 2-3 pound lighter
on a side note, Ive decided not to take advantage of the features the Cyclone manifold offers. As Im writing im taking it apart for a porting job and removing the butterflies. It will be used as 1g manifold. Need to figure out how to make the EGR functional

Are you running a 1g head? If so those butterflies will really help with spool and low end. Not that a 2.4 really needs much help on spool-up.
What are your reasons for not running it with the valves?

Yeap, thats the reason. 2.4 gives you the 400-500 lower spool up, so if a 2.0L with 1g head and 1g intake mani can run fine then theres no reason a 2.4 with 1g head and open Cyclone shouldnt be fine.

IDK if its visible, but there's oil everywhere on the compressor side. IDK what the f*** happened, but it aint good. Of course because it had a bullseye housing which are famous for snapping turbo bolts, all my bolts were trash, only one snapped. And I didnt think of that before and didnt have extra bolts, so quick trip to the hardware store and 30 bucks down the drain until the new bolts arrive.
Me and Skrap hae been busting our asses all day to put it together and weld the new DP and stuff. The new setup is B16g with MHI 7cm housing, and full 3'' turbo-back exhaust, still running stock boost tho.
First impressions were very positive. The B16g moves way more air than the S16g, and I did a couple of short pulls and it feels awesome. I'm having a small oil leak from one of the copper washers of the oil supply line fitting that i have to take care of.
Dont have pics of the new setup today, but Ill take some tomarrow when I wake up

Having all that oil in the comp housing is usually an indicator that an o-ring, or bearing (if there is any shaft play), let loose. You might be able to get a rebuild kit for the turbo and turn around and sell it on Ebay.

Dude I used to have a BEP housing on my old 14b. Nightmare. I used brand new oem bolts with new oem spring washers, AND chased the threads of the housing with a tap everytime I took the bolts out. and it wasn't long before all four snapped. This is with 2000* anti-sieze as well.
I installed the fancy shmancy ARP turbo bolts and washers.... and literally all 4 snapped in a week. Torqued to spec and everything.
So i pawned my turbine housing off on some poor soul a loooooong time ago. The new turbine housings are made of cast stainless steel, but idk if that makes any kind of a difference.
I never got around chasing the threads. This was the first time I took that turbo housing off since i put it in back in August and bolts were still f-ed up. Oh well. I like the MHI 7cm housing much better now. Boost comes soooo much earlier plus the B16g is awesome

Does that battery bracket actually hold the battery down at all or just restrict side to side movement? Either way you know you should do something nicer. You've put a lot of work into the rest of the car, don't do a hack job on that. I don't know if you've seen my battery relocation in the trunk but there are plenty of nice ways to do it up right. The black trim and the coolant bottle are nice though :)

if you take the stock tstat housing and shave it down some you can use the part where the upper radiator hose goes into and then you will not have to have two radiator caps on your car, thats what we did just put a set screw in where that bolt is with some rtv.
Mitch, that wouldnt have been the case cuz i had 1g Fluidyne aluminum radiator that i just sold. I was looking to buy a stock 7g radiator off ebay, but i just found a brand new radiator on one of the 1g's in the junk yard, I think im gonna go with it

they dont fit. I have one and the little mounting posts on the bottom are closer together then on the 7g which is why i just got a 7g on.
I think it fits on 94, it fitted on Skrap's galant, no problem.
Maybe you should try 2g radiator. the lower mounting pins are located differently for 1g and 2g.

Heres another option for the 7g radiator. You can get a t-stat top off 4g63 hyundai. They have some kind of sensor there that can be removed and plugged with brass screw in cap

If you look closely you can see I used the T-stat housing off the 2.4 engine and used the Galant radiator. It was very tight where the CAS is. I had to do some grinding on the housing to get it to fit. I also needed to run a coolant line to the turbo though so that meant some funky stuff going on on the back side where the bolt goes in. The sensor screwed into the top is for triggering my fans (the 1g ECU I'm on can't run them).
