Interesting choice, going from the V6 to a 4cyl...

Not my cup of tea, but looks really good man.

Lovin it :D The Evo engine is not a bad choice! :D

Goku
09-20-2009, 12:54 AM
True, except you're not really gaining anything using the Evo 1-3 engine right off the bat, as it runs about 250hp at the fly and the 6A12TT runs 240hp at the fly and roughly the same amount of torque.

So performance wise you're not gaining anything to begin with.... though this one seems to be rather modified, so it will be interesting to see what it can do :)

Also, where in chch are you 7gVR4 ?
I'm in the good ol garden city too.

cheers guys, yeah it is a bit different, thats one of the reasons i did this the others are as far as im aware it hasnt been done in nz with a vr4 and all the parts are of the shelf for the 4g63 unlike the 6a12 where they are abit harder to come by and sometimes have to be custom made and when i started it seemed like a good idea haha

im out near rolleston bro

4g63t would be better if you want to have more numbers.

nice parts you are putting into the 63t.

Yea man, I think you're right, I haven't seen a 7G with a 4G63t here yet. Though I prefer the V6 route due to it being more unique.... but a bitch to get parts for lol

Very cool project... I'am sure those cams are going to have a crazy idle... What hp/tq numbers are you hoping for?

7gvr4
09-21-2009, 11:55 PM
im hoping with the turbo and fuel pump iv got now to get around 500hp and when i change the turbo, fuel pump and fuel lines to get over 600hp atw

heres the current progress, turns out all four mounts needed to be modified to fit, with a new bracket made up for the grearbox mount, a new hole drilled in the cambelt side mount so the engine could be moved over about 20mm and the rear and crossmember mounts moved over the same amout, also had the exhaust and dump pipe finished up as well as the wastegate moved so the powersteering pump could fit, all the intercooler piping made and the b.o.v. mounted and the catch can and oil cooler mounted

I think you might need a bigger intercooler lol.

7gvr4
12-11-2009, 02:54 AM
haha it was a bit much on the original set up, hopefully wont be to bad on this one but i'll see what it's like when its going and if it's abit to laggy then i'll consider either a bigger turbo or a smaller intercooler

well not the best christmas eve for me this year, had the new engine going and on the dyno, the guys were about halfway through the tune and she was runnning pretty sweet untill the alternator belt came off and got tangled in the cam belt which caused it to jump about four spaces and stop very fuckin fast when pistons met valves

did a leak down test on it and at this stage atleast 2 but maybe more valves are bent but untill the head comes off next week wont know the complete extent of the damage

how does the alternator belt make contact with the cam belt? did you not have the cam belt covers on?

you took a Galant and used a Evo motor and i took a Evo and used a Galant motor lol

12-29-2009, 01:37 AM
yeah didnt have the cam belt covers on for 2 reasons (a) was planning on pulling the head off early next year and (b) didnt have the covers

i had nzefi doing the tune, not there fault though cause i told to run it without covers and to be fair they were just as disapointed as me

and JDMFTW yeah iv been following your build and gotta say very impressive what you've done

Goku
01-02-2010, 12:48 AM
Yea, I had NZEFI doing mine too, they do a good job :)

Good luck with the rebuild, anything you need let me know, I have access to quite a bit of Galant and Evo parts/knowledge.

well i got some good news today and the pistons have little more than a scratch on them ( thank god for forged pistons ) so the head is off to the reconditioners on monday

will hopefully have it running this week, will find out if they got a power reading before it blew

7gvr4
01-10-2010, 09:27 PM
well got the head in to car aid this morning and will have it back tomorow afternoon

got some good news out of this, found out the valves have been replaced at some stage with 1mm oversized items, so got some new ferrea valves going in, more good news is that its only the inlet valves that need replaced

also when i had the valve springs put in it looks like the guys who did it didnt put the valve sleeves in properly and they are completly f*cked now, so its good to find that out now instead of in a month or 2's time

7gvr4
01-15-2010, 10:39 PM
well got it back and gave it one hell of a road test, picked it up from nzefi at 2pm yesterday and at half 5 i was on the road to auckland

the car is a definate monster around town with a very small power band, basically makes all of its power over 1500 revs

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b357/brad_511/006.jpg

over all very impressed considering all the problems trying to get it going it came together just in time and didnt miss a beat the whole trip up

will have to a vid up of it idling for you guys, sounds sorta like a rota, but it shakes the car at the same

well i figure that this is more than overdue for an update, so for the last couple of weeks the cars been at the panelbeaters getting all the dents taken out and smoothed over, it's now all primered and ready and waiting for the new paint job of gloss balck with a red pearl thrown in for good measure, its due to come be finished on tuesday

but today i received this package in the mail

in which i found the most expensive chocolate bar of all time ( which wasnt an empty wrapper at the time but soon was )

and then i found this

Got a call today that pretty much ruined my day, anyway found out the car had finished it's dyno tune and was just getting back from the road test when it had blown the crank seal and dropped all the all, thankfully it didn't do any damage.

Looks like it was a result of running to small breather hoses and it was pressurizing the crank case, it had been blowing abit of blue smoke for awhile but id put it down to the oil seals going on the old turbo.

Hoping it won't cost to much to fix, should be a few hundred for the seal but it may also need a new oil pump and cam belt.

It did make 330kw atw though

This build is great, keep up the great work.

As far as the engine mounts, you can change the belt side mount with mount off a Galant w/ 4g64, you just have to grind off one of the holes to fit. You could probably use the same cross member off the 7g 4g64 to get the front tranny mount to line up. As for the rear tranny mount, you can remove the steering subframe, and replace it with the subframe from again the same donor Galant. This would give you three out of four engine mounts that you could get shelf products for. And honestly i think all you'd need for the main tranny support is the bracket that comes off a stock 7g manual tranny mount. The fender mounting point look to be in the same position as our cars.

AS for the wheels, i think they look cool on the car, but i would prefer a retro fit stock Evo 3 or 4 wheel, just to throw people off.

Edit: but please remove the decals. do you really want to covor that much of the paint job?

7gvr4
08-31-2010, 02:16 AM
Cheers for the coment mate, the engine mounts were sorted last year just got some custom brackets made up

I think the wheels will look better once i've sorted the suspension and it's sitting flush with the arches

Yeah the decals were only on for an event, they came off once i finished that

DOHCstunr
08-31-2010, 01:53 PM
So what are you going to do about the front bumper cover? Looks like you've hacked yours to hell and back

7gvr4
08-31-2010, 04:12 PM
Thats's probably going to have to wait untill next year, i'll get the intercooler moved up as far as possible so the bumper fits properly and i'll get a new bumper and cut that the bare minimum so that it looks good

Blue Ice
08-31-2010, 07:27 PM
well i figured i'd give my $.02 on the engine mounts, in case you wanted to try something different while you had the car down for repairs. Great work, and good numbers...

P.S. Front bumpers are over rated any way... hehe

7gvr4
09-01-2010, 03:24 AM
Cheers mate, I might look into that if I do this again on another car but right now im just happy being able to drive the car so I don't want it to spend any major amounts of time off the road

beam514

sucks about the oil seal man
nice about the power though. According to an online conversion calculater:
330 kW = 442.35924933089996 HP

that's a pretty sizable number lol

7gvr4
09-01-2010, 03:55 AM
Yeah i'm pretty pissed about the oil seal, hopefully shouldn't be too expensive to fix, and atleast thanks to the power it's making it's a pretty good sign that it's not the rings causing excessive blow by

7gvr4
09-06-2010, 12:11 AM
The guys pulled it apart today, and looks like it didn't spit the crank seal, it munched the oil pump instead, I've been told it's a common fault of the HKS cam belts, what they do is pull too hard against the oil pump and cause it to wear out the housing and dumo out the oil, he was saying he's seen it happen to quite a few evo's even a evo 9.

So it's gonna be a new ( second hand ) front case and oil pump and a genuine miti cam belt and it'll be back on the road

Just a word of advice to any running a HKS cam belt, you might want to think about replacing it or the same thing may happen to you
