View Full Version : The Evolution of my engine bay

Just tonight I "finished" my engine bay. It is how I have wanted it to look a while, just never had the time, money or determination to actually do it all over. When I first started modding this car (after the old 8g was totalled) I never really knew which direction and I was always impatient and overlooked all the little details that are important. With that being said, looking below we can take a little walk down memory lane and how it started under the hood.... I have pics somewhere of the stock motor in the car, but that was 6 years ago and I aint lookin for them....

2004 first engine setup, paid a shop for it, I did a ton of research, swapped the car to 5 speed before I brought it in for the engine swap. Bought a good cylinder head from a wrecked EVO 8 that had very little mileage as the car was only out for about 2 months at that point. imported a JDM EVO7 engine and had it all pieced together.......

2006 decided to clean things up a bit and take advantage of the engine being out of the car. engine bay stripped, rust cleaned up, primed and repainted...wiring cleaned up a little, same overall basic setup just had the engine rebuilt and put in some cams......

this upper radiator hose & "cover" lasted about 3 weeks before I realized how gay it really was....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/HPIM0250.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/HPIM0345.jpg

a week after this pic I realized the PC680 mini battery is absolute junk if you dont start your car every few days....

2007...realized that very few people in this area know how to tune the Electromotive Tec2 standalone...also realized it was using 5 year old technology and no real updates since the Tec3 had already come out and was completely different and expensive....so out went that system and in went AEM EMS and a built 4G64 bottom end...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Brianscarparts001.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant003-1.jpg

same basic setup jsut with the 2.4 bottom end....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/ChristinaWedding021.jpg

2008... decided it was finally time to get rid of the small FMIC and all the stainless steel, mig welded and painted intercooler pipes, get rid of my thin walled "im so surprised it hasnt cracked yet manifold", also wanted to get my A/C back into the car since its still a street car, so I had to redo the downpipe and stuff to make room for the A/C....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08036.jpg

all mocked up for a test fit and final marking so I can take them to get tig'd....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08021.jpg

3 wheel motion in the driveway....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Galant08043.jpg

finally everthing is welded up and installed.....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Polishing2008014.jpg

a month later I realized I should shoot myself in the face for even thinking that upper radiator hose/pipe rig that I setup would be practical.... so out it went and in comes the JDM EVO Koyo radiator.....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/Radiator004.jpg

got the car finished just in time for my wedding.... you think im kidding, me and my boy were still puting interior trim back in the car at 2am on the morning of my wedding day. Drove the car out of church after the wedding, drove it to take the wedding pictures, drove it to the reception and back home, made it all the way thru without an issue (THANK YOU GOD!!) PS Sorry for doing the small burnout leaving church.

2009... I finally dont have to worry about wedding stuff and have some time to do what I want. The 3g eclipse trans served me well but with the plans I had for making big power it was sure to be a ticking time bomb. Bought another trans to have Shep look over to see if it could be built, couldnt be built without a ton of custom expensive 1 off parts, so out it went and in comes the EVO trans, figured since it was all taken apart and I knew I would have to do some fabricating to fit that giant EVO trans in the car, why not get a manifold I have been eyeing for 2 years... on second thought, wtf, why not do it all while its out of the car....

LOL dont hate my sick valve cover... the real one was out getting drilled for fittings...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/PICT1720.jpg

I finally have room for A/C...the compressor is down there...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y83/EvoInside/PICT1695.jpg

I dont have too many more pics because I was so focused on just doing everything I really didnt take the time to get a lot of pics. I had originally planned on keeping this totally under wraps until the meet this weekend at GT Spec and Floyd Bennett but with the rain I highly doubt anything will be going on..... so for "now" here she is under the hood...."finished"

looks awesome! the black engine bay paintjob really makes everything "pop"! make sure to take plenty of good pictures during the day before the pipes discolor. also, some of those "see through hood" type pictures are in order!

thanks guys...to answer some of the above questions

the manifold is a Peakboost HVS manifold for an EVO8 it has their *BLING* polishing option.

Reelax I will definetly get the car professionaly shot very soon, likely just the engine bay first, because I have a whole slew of body parts to add on/change very soon. It would have been done already if it would stop raining over here.

Cali, I will get you those pics of the underside, you will see the cuts I had to make and my zig zagged downpipe.

Brian! DUDE shit looks fantastic. Way to take the fun out of it for the rest of us lol.

So, have you ever thought about this for your reservoirs?:

after

The black makes the reservoirs completely disappear from the engine bay. All while retaining the factory locations, quality, function, and fittament.
I just roughed them up a bit, used a plastic primer, then painted them with a few coats of duplicolor Trim Spray. Looks 100% like brand new factory ABS plastic. its not ultra glossy and retains that matte and slightly grainy factory molded plastic look.

Just a thought. Your shit looks so slick buddy. and the form definitely follows the function. biiiiiiiig thumbs up

Nice! The thread had a nice history and pics to read.

thanks for the kinda words.

Right now im gonna leave the reservoirs alone for a little while. Im most likely going to have a custom coolant reservoir fabbed up, I want it to be the same shape as the OEM one but be made of aluminum with AN fittings and have stainless fittings w/an external clear tube to see the level. I already found a good alumium power steering reservoir and I would just paint the windshield washer reservoir neck black.

looks f#cking dope Brian i cant wait to take a ride in this thing, i wish people could know how much work and pesonal sacrifice went into this build that started way back in 04' and im glad i was there to see it and help with what i could.

ive seen it go through 3 different exhaust manifolds, about 4 radiator setups, 2 intercoolers w/piping, 3 coilover setups, a couple of short blocks, a 3g tranny, evo tranny, wheels, tires, and the list goes on and on, not to mention the countless phone calls to me talking about "im gonna roll this thing off a cliff!" or my favorite "im gonna burn it to the ground!" when things werent working out. the goal was achieved homeboy and were gonna rock this spring.

Thanks bro. I couldnt have done alot of this without your help. Its funny that nearly every time we worked on the car that entailed you being under the car I would drop something on you, either a 10mm wrench, anti-freeze, trans fluid and oil on more than one occasion. Its amazing when I look back when I had my other G body kit'd up with neon windshield washer lights and stuff. It all changed the first time I rode in a fast turbo B-series 93 civic hatch, thats when I decided performance was my next phase.
