**This is an updated/compressed version of the original build thread**

March 2009-November 2009
In March of 2009 I purchased this vehicle from the original owner for $500 with 172,000 miles. There was a list of items needing replacement/repairs from the start. Those of you who have followed this build along the way have seen the transformation over the summer, and also seen the problems I have run into on different aspects of the build. As of November 2009 I have decided to pull the engine out and prepare for something entirely new over the winter months. As things progress I will update this build thread. If you have any questions about the build, just ask and I will answer them.

Below are pictures of the build as it progressed throughout 2009;

Condition of the vehicle when purchased. It has some body work to be done;

Finding a V6 Galant with a broken timing belt would be the ideal in that situation. They are dirt cheap.

Your right and thats what I am looking for but the cheapest I have found is a high mileage v6 but they want a little over 2k for it. I would like to stay under 1k for that. I'll just keep my eyes open for any deals. I will also keep up on this build since it has been useful info spd_frk.

I really wonder what that center one could be from. Probably not a Diamante. It even looks like it uses a larger crankshaft as well. Could the Montero 6G74 have differences, and that's where this is from? I am extremely interested in seeing what is going on here.

The rod/piston combo in the center is from a 3.5L engine such as the Diamante or Montero. The one on the far right looks to be a different size, but the rod journals are identical between the "regular" 74 rods and the thinner one on the right...the one on the right just has the bearing still in place.

Well you got it figured out, just take off the AWD portion...I am not about to take up that modification lol.

Turbo is a "possible" but as of right now it will be getting a full tear down and rebuild for N/a with some serious parts installed. The only reason I would likely stay N/a is for the throttle response, and less expense on top of such a build like this.

Mmmmmm...something big...Damn I think you beat me to it...
Idk if I "beat you to it" yet, it wont be done until Spring time I would imagine. Already have a few of the current 72/74 parts sold that I didn't need, and once I can get the old engine and trans out then I will spend a lot of time within the engine bay cleaning up wiring and stuff.

The engine build will be a complete tear down, rebuild with forged pistons, swapping out for the 74 rods, set of cams and valve springs, balancing...pretty much a built block.

The main difference are the cam profiles and compression ratio, everything else is pretty much the same. The good part is you can keep the dizzy if you like and swap the 3.0L valve covers, and everyone will think it's a 6g72.

You can run the distributor on the mivec though too :thumb:

The cam profile is one of the "big" changes going into the motor, I just didn't want to mess around with the mivec stuff since they are still trying to get it all figured out to work correctly and not screw stuff up badly.

Thanks go to mysticj for this information that he posted on Club3g. This is the flow chart for the non-mivec 75 heads. Compared to a heavily modified 74 head, the STOCK 75 heads still out-flowed them significantly;

No sense in keeping the good stuff hidden IMO. Figure I may as well share all the information I come across so others here can start building some good machines on the platform. We have a few members who have taken up the 74 swap, but I know people are always looking to acheive more. Everything in this build is getting directed towards that and with a budget in mind so people are "scared away" by a huge price tag.

I only had a little time after work tonight to work on it. So far all the hoses are and wiring is disconnected, radiator and headlghts are removed. I will be hitting it again tomorrow most of the day and should hopefully have it all out and sitting on a pallet.

I thought about doing it that way, but I decided to just go straight to the trans area to make removal quick and simple.

No 5spd yet...it will be a while before that is bought even. I am focusing on getting the engine bay all cleaned up and organized nicely, get the brake system completely done, wheel issue resolved, install the 5spd shifter...pretty much the car will be sitting on jack stands for a while so I can go at the whole car.

Well I spent a couple hours working on the car today. My goal was to get the 5spd shifter and cables installed, but I went about this a little differently than most have. Since I have already removed the majority of the A/c system I decided to take out the rest from inside. I removed the entire lower dash, center counsel, and lower portion of the heater core assembly. Now, this was by no means "easy" as it involved taking a part the center dash "frame" which holds the HVAC controls and radio, and a little assistance from a long pry bar, what I wanted out finally did.

http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee207/HD-SPDFRK/Galant/DSC_0001.jpg

This allowed much easier access to the shifter cable plate bolts on the firewall, but again this was not easy by any means. The hole to the right is from the A/c system which hooked up to the lines in the engine bay. I will fabricate a plate to cover the hole so there is nothing to worry about with that.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee207/HD-SPDFRK/Galant/DSC_0003-1.jpg

Everything which has been removed, some will be placed back into the car while other parts will be tossed out. Oh, and yea...a new cabin filter is being put in lol
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee207/HD-SPDFRK/Galant/DSC_0004.jpg
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee207/HD-SPDFRK/Galant/DSC_0005-1.jpg

5spd shifter and cables installed. The spring action (side to side movement) is a little stiff when you let go so I greased the bolt, and placed a smaller washer onto the facing sides of the spring assembly which improved it quite a bit. There was a small plate between the cover plate(?) and shifter bracket that held the shifter into the assembly which caused about an 1/8" gap between the ball and the plastic housing. I wasn't happy with the "sloppy" feel because you could feel that little extra movement, so the plate had been removed and it is a nice smooth feeling when moving the shifter around.

I was trying to get to those two bolts like you did, but it didn't work so well. The left bolt was easy to get a flex head ratcheting wrench onto, but just no room whatsoever for any wrench or socket to fit on the right side one.

After I started taking out the rest of the stuff and finding more components to be removed, the work and time spent was paying off. I am going to be able to clean up the wiring in that center section a bit more now.

There are two rods that had a different stamping than the others, have to research a bit more to see if there are any differences between them or not. Nothing visible that I have found besides the markings. 4 of the rods are stamped with a "U" and two are stamped with a "T";

Yea, let me know what is on yours. I know BJ's had a "J" stamped on his. I doubt there is any difference in the rods because they are likely a manufacture date/code

little update, not going with a twin setup...just won't work efficiently. I did some sifting through some other turbo builds to see what a/r folks were using. I found an .82 a/r turbine housing wasn't seeing spool up until about 4000rpms, the turbo i am running has a .76 a/r...so doing a set of twins like this these would likely not spool up until much later in the rpm range (read not dd friendly).

I am sticking to the same turbo choice, but only running one of these. Even at 15psi of boost the turbo will run from 3000-6000rpms (even up to 6500rpms its at 72%), straight through the 80% efficiency of the compressor map. I should see a spool up time around 3500-3800rpms i believe which is still somewhat dd friendly but will also be capable at the strip.

I called today to get my 6g75 pulled from the car it is sitting in, and should hopefully have it picked up and shipped back to me here sometime next week...then the fun begins!

I do have one question though, let's say I have a full 5-speed set-up from a 99-00 including the 99-00 ECU and harness, technically if I swap all of it over to an 02-03 it will not throw codes right?

4g63lover
01-23-2010, 12:56 PM
Exactly!

Don't forget this will be for the 01-03 guys who have the code issue. The only thing we have to do is cross check the pin out from the 01-03 ECUs and compare to our 99-00 ECUs. I believe there are some pins that need to either be moved or added for us (99-00 folks) to swap into the 01+ ECUs but nothing serious. I know the one major change is the additional O2 sensors that the ECU reads, but from reading on Club3G it sounds like you can tap into the 99-00s existing pre cat, and after cat O2 sensors so the ECU will read "4" instead of missing 2. FSM 13A-417-I for 4cyl, and 13B-499-I for V6 have the ECU pinouts to check, but it seems pretty straight forward.

This is where I'm lost, why would I need to move pins and what not if I have the WHOLE ECU and Harness from the 99-00? Just for the sake of No code for the 5-speed swap, not for tuning reasons.

If you have the 99-00 ECU and harness then yea, no codes...all you are doing is ripping the old stuff out and putting in the 99-00...but why?

The problem with this though is you are basically taking "two steps back" in any build progress, or growth capabilities later. If you are a 99-00 Galant, you will not have any codes from doing the 5spd swap, great...but you have no EcuFlash option. If you are a 01-03 Galant 5spd swapped, there will be the 5 solenoid codes thrown, but you are able to flash and tune with EcuFlash.

The 99-00 ECUs are really just "limited" and they really aren't worth swapping over to if you are a 01+ Galant. If what I have found works to resolve the codes from being thrown then we eliminate a common issue for the 01+ ECU and 5spd swapped drivers.

Yeah that does suck. But you could always go piggyback. I know it's more money but it's the easy way to do it IMO. As soon as I graduate, I will start colelcting turbo parts and most likely an EMU. Then Once, I swap the motor, it's full EVO IX ECU and harness time!

4g63lover
01-24-2010, 03:22 PM
You can spend the $200+ for a piggyback unit...but I wouldn't say it's easier than swapping the ECU to an 01+. For the 4cyl like you have though the Evo ECU swap has been discussed in great detail to be the "best" option so you can monitor knock. You can swap to the M/T 3rd gen Eclipse ECU and flash the Evo ROM to read above 100%, but no knock monitoring. The Evo ECU is likely the best choice still for those who have a boosted 4cyl though because it will monitor knock and read above 100%.

If you want to do a full harness and Evo ECU, don't waste your money on any piggyback...everything can be done within that ECU and save you a few hundred dollars in the process.

Ah. You're right that makes more sense. EVO ECU and custom harness while it's on the 4G64 Single slammer, then just swap the harness once I'm ready to go 4G63.

or

I could just do the 4G63 swap after I graduate and just drive the 4G64 'til it dies. Though I am planning on getting another G sometime in the future and 5-speed swap it for a DD and I really want an 02 which is why I want to just swap the 99-00 harness and ECU since it wont be heavily modified to need tuning.

I was reading about v6's ecu problem not being able to tune for boost. I know in ecu flash, you can edit the load table so that instead of 10, 20, 30... 100, you can make it go 20, 40, 60, 80 100, 120... 200. Has any of the V6 guys tried that?

Also, I seen that the the Evo guys are able to expand their maps to even larger resolution than normal. Not sure how its done, but if someone is able to figure it out, you could tune past 200 load. even 200 load is good for maybe 6 psi.

qnz
02-16-2010, 02:57 PM
Do you have an image of your Rom? I wanna see what a v6 map looks like

without looking at your rom, most fuel maps look the same for the first 3-4 load cells so you can remove them all together. Such as

40
60
80
100
120
140
160
180
200
220
240

and this would give you fair resolution, until someone figure outs how to get "big maps" onto the v6 rom

And I wouldnt exactly say 200 load = X psi. it also depends on how big your turbo is and your VE. I know on my car, when I hit 180 load, im at 10 psi on my t3 turbo.

Check out the area I circled on the map you posted. That is 4 columns of identical fuel values which can be condensed to 1. If there is no 10, 20, 30 load, the ecu is going to use the next available known value, which is 40 load. Since the map for 40 load looks exactly the same as 10,20,30, you can cut out the un-nessary rows and add more resolution to your map. Most tuners on EvoM would tune this way before Tephra added "big maps" to his newest mod.

Conincidenally, if you run off your map, such as 290 load, the ecu is going to use its last known value which is 240 load and continue to use that.

In a nutshell, this is why people said you could boost to like 3 psi on the stock ecu withouht needing a piggy back. when in 3 psi, you would be around 120 load or so, which would look similar to 100 load.

do you have the rom off your actual car? do you know your rom ID number?

what is it that you v6 guys want to do? flash the stock map or swap in a 3000gt vr4 ecu and flash that?

Don't sweat it man, this stuff was way beyond myself even for a while. I just started digging and reading more and more on the topic. I am still saving up money for more components on the build and doing what I can, but ultimately when the build is done all of this tuning stuff will resurface itself. I am just getting a big jump on it now to reduce the "work load" later

Cool beans

what is the difference in ignition systems? im asking a lot of questions but im just trying to help and see if I know some bits that your v6 guys are lacking.

as for adding bigger maps, I rememmber tephra saying this:

Steps required to make maps bigger:
a) identify map you want to make bigger
b) identify axis's of said maps
c) see if these axis's are used for any other maps
d) relocate axis's to new block of ROM
e) relocate said map(s) to new block(s) of ROM
It's not particularly hard, just time consuming, and a lot of checking required.
If anyone had a specific requirement/request I could do it fora small fee...

he said it should only take him an hour or so to do

Matt, beat me to it...

The 6g7x DOHC and SOHC have different ignition systems, the 01+ Monteros have a DIS system like the 3kgt yet SOHC even the pinout is almost the same. The goal is to allow the distributor 6G7x ECU to understand and read boost for high load values.

i see.

So ya, i guess your best bet is for someone to figure out how to get "big maps" onto the 2000 ecus. Does the 3kgt ecu have knock control? what about the v6 ecu?

Another reason why the Evo ecu is so popular becasue they come with knock control, launch control, lean spool and all these other useful turbo specific tools built into the rom already. I wonder if these can be added into the v6 rom..?

Hey Matt, try to compare the 3kgt rom with the 3G/8G rom, some of the hex codes maybe the same.

Big Maps can be as big as you want it to be. However, to do it, you would need to find unused space on the rom big enough to hold a 25x30 or 30x30 resolution map for fuel and timing. I remember Tephra saying that a 30x30 map could be done, but would take up like 80% of resources on the rom. hehe.
