Okay I think my brake pads are worn out and I only have 20,000 miles on them. I stopped by the dealership and they want to charge $280.00. I have changed brake pads before on other type of cars. How hard is it to change the pads on the Galant our is it just like all the rest?

its a piece of cake..
although id suggest having the rotors turned anytime you replace the pads, its certainly not necessary.

Hey thanks manybrews. I am trying to save for a totaly different brake system so I want to do this myself. For $280.00 like the dealership wants I could save up another $100.00 and get the AEM brake system. Which does remind me. The guy at the dealership says that with a after market system there will be alot noise. I have never heared of this problem is it true? I think he was just telling me this so that I would go there.

yes, often there is a LOT of noise from aftermarket systems, as they are designed with performance and NOT comfort as the priority.

although the real high quality ones are generally decent enough to deal with, ive had to remove a few aftermarket componants from customers cars due to horrible noise.. the main culprit being carbon fiber brake pads.
DAMN, those are noisey.

Have you had any problems with the AEM system and what brake pads would be the best in your opinion.

honestly, we dont deal with aftermarket stuff that much, so i couldnt even begin to guess..
the stuff we do deal with is usually removed and thrown away, so the manufacturer may never be known.

Jason, talk to AK1 he has the AEM Big Brake upgrade ($400 or so) and he is using EBC Green Stuff Pads which cost $60 +shipping from AK1 and the HorsePower House in Kentucky.

there is a tutorial on 3g on how to change the pads...i think i have one too on my site, check out the links. nonetheless, uhm you really can't avoid the shop. i'd suggest turning the rotors and the best way to do that is on the car...

Yeah I know it is just that damn $280.00. That is only about $100.00 away from the AEM big brake system. I guess before I buy this system I am going to have to take in to account the noise. But hell I listen to my radio so damn loud anyway so it is not like I will hear them anyway https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif

just some advise from experience...

the AEM's were quite nosiy unitl they were good and heated up... took about 2-3 stops before the pads heated up enough not to cause a hellsih squeal from the brakes... and braking whil ein reverse was almost always noisy...

anytime you get a slotted rotor you will hear a hissing when the brakes are applied... this is a function of the slots, "cleaning" the pads... nothing to worry about, and that sound was kinda cool...

I've decided to go with the Baer track kit for the Galant this time... 13" rotors, with Baer 2 psiton calipers... no 4 pots for me, i'm not all up for upgrading my master cyclinder and shit... I could have went with the Stoptech's which offers a 4 pot, but matches the pitson sizes for each application, so you have no need to upgrade the master cyclinder...

But they forn kits alone were $1600 plus $180 for the gloss paint on the caliper... I got the Baer kit for $1500 and that included rear rotors and pads... the Stoptech was a front kit only...

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(efiLnikcuFeciN)</div><div class='quotemain'>i replace my rotors and the pads today at this local shop, and i was watching wondering how come i dont really see the brake bleeding ?? Â*

:</div>

thats because no one bleeds the brakes during a brake job.. why? because theres no reason to.
the only reason to bleed them would be if air somehow got into the system, which is only going to happen if 1) the system has a leak, or 2) you have replaced a componant for some reason.

Ic, so in most cases when i'm gonna do it in the future just to change the pads i dont have to do the bleeding part when it doesn't happen right ??
all i have to do is take the old pads off, and install a new pad. so basiclly if i dont touch anything else, the bleeding wont happen. correct me if i'm wrong ?

I have to disagree! I know it's supposed to be a closed system so if you didn't need to bleed it in the first place, why now. I asked myself this question ever since I've learned to do my own brakes (since my first car). Well let me tell you from experience that it might have something to do with squishing the pistons back in and all that OLD brake fluid back up the system towards the reservior. I don't know what it is but on occasion after the install of new pads, the brakes don't work well. Bleed the brakes and they feel better and much more firm. I advise anyone to bleed the brakes after install of new pads because 1)you get rid of some of the old brake fluid, 2)it's safer to do so along with the peace of mind. Bleed the brakes anyways b/c there's no harm in it and brake fluid is cheap, an accident isn't.

Get some Speedbleeders and you can bleed all your brakes in less than 5 min. by yourself.
