can someone give me an estimate on how much a shop would charge to replace my waterpump.

I have had a sqealing noise coming from my car for some time now. It does it whenever my car has been sitting up for a while and a start it up then the noise stops . I thought that the problem was with my belts but i had someone to check it out for me and they found that it was the water pump.

Probably very close to the cost of replacing a timing belt, so I would just get the timing belt replaced along with the water pump

Mitsubishi of las vegas wants $975 for timing and water pump change.... I just think that way the F*** over priced!

Average price that a shop will charge for a 4cyl timing belt replacement is around $400ish.

If you find a reputable person locally that works on DSM's he/she will probably charge you MUCH cheaper.

the galant of my father is a v6 2.5 6a12 and water pump damage and came out less than 50.00 dollars and the timing belt is the same if it is damaged does not change the mechanical charging $ 100 for that work was a little uncomfortable but if it is to your car if it is a 4 cylinder you can aser yourself only if you have a repair manual and do not know how to put the engine in time there can consult.

you would want to replace the timing belt also, because you need to remove it to get to the water pump. So its best to do it all at once

Yeah, almost all the steps it takes to change a timing belt will be done if you change the water pump

I was charged $450.00 with parts and labor to do a timing belt change, tensioner belt change, and water pump and gasket change at a Mitsu dealer.

I paid $300 for the labor (supplied the parts). Always best to change the water pump and the belt at the same time.

sence we're on the subject of timing belts, are these rough estimates for both I4 & V6 ??

or is the V6 timing belt harder to get to?

sorry if this is a lame question :P and I know I should prob use the search figure ;)

V6 is much harder to get to, making it more expensive to replace

OK, a question. Is the water pump leaking? If it is and you have the V6 you need to replace the timing belt because the coolant essentially renders the belt unusable. If you have the 4 cyl. you may be able to get away with just replacing the pump. On the 4 cyl. the water pump is not driven by the timing belt ( as on the V6 ) and depending on the severity of the leak it is possible that the timing belt would not have come in contact with any coolant. A timing belt change on the V6 cost me 1200.00 at the dealer. Included in the price was the belt, auto-tensioner , tensioned pulley, idler pulley and water pump. If your pump was NOT leaking and the belt has very low miles on it ( less than twenty ) I would say you can get away with just replacing the water pump. Changing the pump "only" may not require the removal of several other components that would have to be removed if the belt was also changed. If you do get the belt changed you should at least get the auto-tensioner changed also. Its driven by oil pressure so if it fails it could be destructive. Someone may want to comment regarding auto-tentioner failures and if they result in timing belt disengagement and thus engine destruction

I would get a 2nd opinion on the waterpump of the cause of the squel/noise. More than likely its drive belt (drives waterpump)related because if your actual waterpump goes you will know it and it won't just make noises.

For any members who have replaced water pump, tensioner belt and timing belt, were OEM parts used for pump and timing belt or aftermarket? Interested in Gates or Cosworth Performance timing belts. I'm sure the OEM belt will be fine and haven't herd of one going bad prematurely on 02 Galant ES-V6 (62,000 miles). I figure if I'm gong to change belt, install something stronger for piece of mind. Any suggestions / comments would be appreciated.

Hook up with one of the TGCTX guys and maybe they can help. But for a start, Id recommend buying the parts from somewhere else, and then having someone do the install. NEVER BUY PARTS AT THE SERVICE SHOP! You will pay through the nose!

6G72Galant, thanks for you reply. I agree with purchasing parts and bringing to service shop to install. Is there a GC member who might be able to get the following parts at a discounted rate;

Spark plug wires - part # MD361060
Water pump - part # MD978743
Timing Belt - part # MD307487
Tensioner belt - part # 1145A070
Spark plugs - part # MD313442 (NGK PFR5G-11)
Distributor Cap - part # MD619613
Distributor Rotor - part # MD619689
Intake manifold gasket - part # MD199282

I don't know about any discounted rates, but www.donherringmitsubishi.com tends to have the cheapest prices for parts among dealers

I ordered my timing belt and a few other things from there

Thanks for the suggestion beam514. DH was the first place I inquired about purchasing the parts. I've used DH in the past however, his pricing on these items were much more than the quotes received from another dealer;

$456.46 for the following:

Spark plug wire set - part # MD361060
Water pump - part # MD978743
Timing Belt - part # MD307487
Tensioner belt - part # 1145A070
Spark plugs - part # MD313442 (NGK PFR5G-11)
Spark plugs - Part # MD313443 (NGK PFR6G-11) colder plug
Distributor Cap - part # MD619613
Distributor Rotor - part # MD619689
Intake manifold gasket - part # MD199282

*NOTE: removed one of the OEM plugs installed and it was Champion RC10PYP4. NGK website states that plug PFR6G-11 would be correct for 2002 3.0 V6 and have been informed by NGK rep that Mitsubishi switched to the hotter heat range plug PFR5G-11 in 2003. Either NGK PFR5G-11, DENSO PK20PR11 or CHAMPION RC10PYP4 plugs were recommended in owner's manual.

GSpeed - I moved your post regarding magnecor wires as it did not belong in this thread about water pumps. I moved it to the performance mods for the 8G section.
