View Full Version : Any 9Gers with reflectors headlamps got HID?

Hey guys. I have an 09 Galant with reflector style headlamps (9007 hi/lo bulbs) and trying to hook up HID so I can see at night (halogens suck and the stock fogs suck).

I would just pick up 9007 HIDs but I have read that the reflector headlamps scatter the light around and it looks crappy.

Does anyone here have HIDs with the reflector headlamps? Everyone with HID seems to have the projector style. I would just buy projector headlamps but a pair would cost around $300. I'm just trying to see if anyone has first-hand experience with HID w/ reflector headlamps to see if it is indeed cheesy.

Thanks

I'm a 8g guy but many of us have HID with the reflector. The cutoff isn't a straight line, but in my opinion it isn't that bad, just point them to the floor. The right way to go is to save up the money and buy the Projectors or retrofit some on your headlight and install the proper HID.

Thx Omega. That's basically what I'm trying to avoid (retrofitting and buying a set of projectors, which I can't find anyway). I guess it doesn't really matter what type of car one has (9g, 8g, or otherwise). If it's a reflective lamp, you're going to deal with uneven lighting with HID. This sucks.

I have them and the work fine. I have no Highs but never need them with 6K HIDs for the lows.

Thx for the input. I'll just cop a 9007 hi/lo kit from DDMtuning and see how it goes. They're 'only' $83 w/ shipping.

Hey Helotes, do you get really bright white with a hint of blue with your 6k? I want the brightest light, but don't to blind folks. So I may go with 6k

Thanks.

6K is pure white no blue.

Word word. Thx again Helotes. I'll stick with 6k. I fear any higher like 8k and it would be too much blue in there.

Thanks.

6000k is a very brilliant white with tints of blue, it is tiping the blue scale on the spectrum, if you want a PURE bright then 5000k is the way to go.

Yeah I want as bright as possible. I think I should go with a hint of blue just because I don't want to blind other drivers. I live in Souteast PA, which is a very hilly area and I do a fair amount of driving on un-lit roads too.

6k sounds like what you want then http://gallery.me.com/pwdougherty#100247 I have 6k in my lights.. Normally, They would be whiter cuz i have 55watt ballasts but my 09 ralliart has blue tinted projector lenses (cant speak for other ralliarts prior to 09) So these should show you 6k fairly accurately as far as color.

6k is pretty nice, u can to from 4.5k to 6k, 4.5 being the whitest ... i have 6k as well and it projects pure white, but if u look at the head, there is a faint tint of blue.

Thanks Procksa and Krazien for the info and pics. That helps a lot. 6k seems like the way to go then. Should have the kit installed in a couple weeks. I'll update this thread with a link to my cardomain page if anyone wants to see how the HIDs look on a 9g with reflector (ugh) headlamps

@Krazien - I think you made a thread some time ago about disabling DRLs with HIDs. I see a lot of the luxury cars with HID technology and DRLs. Do you know why 9Gs can't or shouldn't run with HID and DRL?

our drl just runs the headlights at 70 percent, so if you hook up the ballasts to them with out disabling the drl you will get flickering everytime you turn the car on and it will wear out the ballasts quicker

That's right it decreases the bulb-ballast life span.

Unless you use a relay to power the ballast.

Also most luxury cars like lexus and bmw dont use the main headlight bulbs they have another bulb in the assembly as a DRL at least thats what it appears.. usually the outter most (towards side of car) is the projector, and innermost (nearest grille) is DRL (eg lexus IS250 and 350)

EDIT: usually just a standard halogen DRL in a reflector setup. Again I am only goin on what I see at stoplights and passing cars
