I've got a 64 with 126k and a pretty steady valve tick. Anyone think that it's time to go up one viscosity grade?

Do you get the tick year round or only in cold weather? Does it go away as the car warms up? My V6 sounds terrible in cold weather but then sounds normal after running for 5 minutes.

All year, but bad on startups, worse in the cold. Sometimes it doesn't go away even after hitting operating temp.

i would say it's time to inspect, clean, and replace if necessary your valve adjusters.

People on here have had varied results with different solutions, but some of the ones that I've read worth mentioning -

1. Switch to Amsoil. Some people say it reduces their lifter tick
2. Seafoam - Some people says after you seafoam it removes lifter tick
3. Clean or replace your lash adjusters (I think cleaning is with Diesel)
4. I personally put in some Rislone this oil change and am going to see if it gets better.
5. I've switched to 10w30 from 5w30 (thicker) but didn't help with lifter tick
6. I've tried Subaru Top Engine cleaner with no improvement
7. Someone said to throw in a shot of Transmission fluid or diesel in my engine oil to help, but I've personally not done this.

Option 3 might be the best. Option 1 might be the easiest for now.

My question is why do you think you need to run that heavy an oil?

my 0.02ยข, you might try switching to amsoil, not a thicker oil just what your manual calls for, and maybe some of their engine flush before you change the oil....ive used amsoil in my v6 since 7,500 miles, im now at 112,000 ive never had the slightest notion of valve tick and the engine sounds and runs like it did when new. now i use it in every motor i have, we had a 95 toyota corolla, used to be my wifes car now her car is the galant........yeah 308,000 miles when sold and started every time never a scary engine click, clack, or tick.

I seafoamed thru the pcv vac line last night and it worked perfect for my noisy tick. About half a can while a friend kept the rpms about 3K. Cold start this morning and no tick. I have a bottle of rislone to top off the oil as I need it.
Hope that helps.
