Oil in spark plugs

I changed my plugs last night on my 2000 Galant, 4 cyl. 2.4 SOHC ID 4G64/G....and found that two of the four plugs had oil in the chamber. Is that normal? I'm not a mechanic so I'm not sure if it is or not. I have a Chilton Repair Manual and it mentions that I could have either bad valve seals or the piston rings may be broken. The 2 plugs that had oil are the 2 that are secured and have 2 bolts on them that have to be removed prior to removing the actual plug itself. Advice please...................

Easy fix. Nothing to be concerned about. Time for new valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals. When you buy the valve cover gasket kit, the tube seals should come with it. Local parts store will carry it for under 40 bucks for the kit. Easy to replace if you have basic skills and the book.

Replace the spark plug tube seals, and voila.

Yep easy fix...same thing happened to me an i wasnt sure how to fix it...shop charged over 400 to fix. So dont go to any of em.

You have to remove the valve cover. That's why I said to get the kit so you can replace the valve cover gasket too since you have to remove it to get to the Spark plug tubes.

It comes down to confidence. Are you confident enough to do it yourself and save 150 to 300 dollars in labor or you would rather pay someone that? It's not hard, it takes me 20 minutes, start to finish to replace valve cover gasket and tube seals, depending on the old gasket. Might take you one hour but you will feel good about yourself at the end knowing you did it yourself and saved all that money. Take that money you saved, get your mom some flowers and take your girl out. Get a Haynes repair manual, it will show you how to, step by step. Good luck!

Yeah........your right, I will definately feel better about having done the labor myself and saving money. Confidence......Definately, I have the confidence to do the work myself. i did my own lol.. make sure you got every blade on the book cause if that gasket is old.. lol its there to sty, took me like 45 minutes to get the gasket out.. good luck :) keep us posted.

The easiest way to remove the old gasket is to drive the car prior to work and get the valve cover off while it's still hot. The gasket will be a little easier to remove.

It wont be as hot as you might think but if it's put some gloves on.

Well, I finished the Valve Cover Gasket Replacement. It wasn't that bad. It took me about 2 hours but that's because I had a little trouble getting the cover off the valves. I didn't want to be too rough with removing the cover. I was a bit nervous about possibly breaking something. The most time consuming was making sure all the old gasket was completely off the cover. I actually do feel better about myself and my mechanical abilities, being that I did the labor myself. Thanks for all ya'lls support and advice. Next will be the timing belt!

That will be more complicated. You have to get it perfect or risk bending valves.

Yeah, I figured the timing belt replacement would be more of a challenge. Fortunately, my neighbor is a mechanic, by trade, and has offered his assistance, when the time comes. After replacing the valve cover gasket, I feel more confidant about doing repairs myself. With this forum as support, anything's possible. Thanks.
