On paper its a 1994.... but with all the money I've dumped into it since January 2009, I feel like I'm driving a 2010 7g Mitsubishi Galant GS. After you see what I've been through, you might agree.

About the car:
This is my 4th 7g Galant, and my 2nd GS 5 speed. With that said, this car is 11 years in the making.

The purpose behind my build was to simply build a car that I could enjoy in every possible way, and compete in any form I could.... all while keeping it daily.
I know that a great 1/4 mile car isn't going to be a great track or autox car, and neither one of those is going to make for an excellent daily driver.

So I built this car simply to be as good as it can be at any event, without sacrificing daily driven fun, or comfort.

My motivation
My philosophy for modding has always been: Modify it so it looks/performs/ flows like it could have come that way from the assembly line. So that it looks/feels/handles/performs/ and makes you smile the way that YOU feel it should have came from the assembly line.
I want people to look at my car, and not be able to point their finger at any one thing that stands out from the rest of their car.
I want them to say: THAT, is a nice car. Not, that is a sweet spoiler, or those are great graphics or wheels

Its all about flow with me. Its all about self expression, all while honoring and respecting the brilliant minds at Mitsubishi(or any car manufacturer for that matter).

So that was as of last fall.
I took a lot more pictures but they are scattered over 3 computers and Most of them are poor quality anyways. Truth is I didn't take nearly as many Pics of the white GS through the development stages as I did the Black GS.
Some of the time it was because I didn't have a camera, other times it was because I had lost some of my enthusiasm for the White car.
I mean the black car LOOKED AMAZING in person.
I've got my passion back though, and mechanically, the white GS is far superior. The interior is in much much better condition and all but the paint on the car is perfect.
So... From here on out I pledge to take more detailed pictures and keep you guys in the loop. Documentation is everything.

DOHCstunr

So basically I've had a rough 18 months with the GS.
The biggest part of it has been maintenance.
Being a New York car, I went through a suspension nightmare piece by piece.
Then there is just the other stuff that piles up and keeps you from moving forward.

I'll make a sort list of whats gone wrong and whats been(or will be next week) replaced on the car so far this past year.

coil packs, transistor pack, oil pump gasket, old cast manifold cracked, get new manifold, manifold to head studs snapped(got new oem studs, nuts and washers), starter failed(destroyed my old ACT chromoly flywheel(ordered new flywheel, awaiting install), axle failed, upper control arm ball joints, front lower control arm ball joints, front compression arm ball joints, Cam angle sensor failed, alternator failed, New alternator failed and caused my battery to boil over and explode(acid all over engine bay), got another new alternator(warranty) and new battery(no warranty), power window/lock master switch failed, replaced tie rods(inner and outer), replaced rear eccentric bolts for rear toe control arm(seized), hard steel brake lines rusted through and failed near the gas tank(had to literally build and bend all new brake lines from scratch), brake master cylinder is approaching failure(ordered new one awaiting install), Clutch master cylinder is approaching failure(ordered new one awaiting install) clutch slave cylinder cracked where the bolts secure it(ordered new one, awaiting install), My ACT2100 can't handle 27psi and is slipping(ordered new clutch, awaiting install), oil pump and pan are leaking again(ordered new oil pump, gasket and oil pan), power steering pump failed(replaced power steering pump), Power steering rack has completely failed(ordered new one should be here friday), old muffler was 7 years old and shot(installed new Vibrant performance one) wideband sensor fouled out(ordered new one)

So my suspension is 100% new,
My brake system is about to be 100% new
my clutch system and hydraulics are about to be 100% new
my power steering system is about to be 100% new

Its been a hell of a year guys lol.

I know as of late I haven't been sharing much on TGC,when it comes to my car anyways.
So from here on I'll be updating you with pics of my maintenance, upgrades, etc. In this thread.

john you have donn incredible work.

i'm also experienceing my own boat load of failures but don't have the funds to fix, so the car sits most of the time.

I dare say that my spoolup is actually quicker and boost response is improved. Once the wastegate is open my boost level seems to stay very very flat now as compared to the old Joe P. boost controller. Adjustment is easy, precise, and no tools are required.
I'm very satisfied and should have done this years ago. Thanks to MAPerformance.com for hooking me up with such a great price.

i need to get a nice oil pan like that.

you have a little bit of work ahead of you there. You are lucky you have hole for the clutch master its a pain when you have to make them. Oh and let me know how that steering rack goes, i noticed the other day when i was under my car its been leaking.

Well got started today. Set the car up on stands and took the wheels off. Started pulling axles and dismantling the front suspension. took the charge pipes out of the engine bay on my way to the trans.

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/6792/gettingstarted.jpg
Jeez I have a lot of work ahead of me.

Here is the old compression arm ball joint. Dry as it could be with tons of play. This bad boy is why my left front suspension has been knocking when I switch from accel to deccel
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/8307/compressionarms.jpg
Once these are installed. That will be every single ball joint on the car has been replaced. Front and rear lol.

I took a few weeks off. I feel bad for my poor car sitting in the garage, but I suppose its better than sitting on the street. The last few weeks of the semester were ultra stressful, and after I took my last final I went to the beach for 2 weeks. Now I'm home and have resumed wrenching.

Yanked the old power steering rack and am in the process of finishing up the installation of the new one. I'll post some pics when I get the chance.

I feel your pain. My G has been sitting in the garage for a month now. Hey, do you know if the rack is different from a 2g DSM to a 7g Galant? Just wondering because the part numbers are different and I have both sitting around. Your car is looking great. Why you didn't build up the DOHC 2.4 you had though?

well at the time I simply didn't have the money. I just wrecked my black GS and i sold the headswap to recover the cost of buying the white GS.
Then of course I'm still FWD, so a 2.4 turbo would only irritate me. Once I get out of school and start working full time I plan to go your route.

As for the steering racks,

they are the same, BUT the galant steering rack is variable assist rack and pinion. The galant has a power steering control module that controls a bipass valve in the top of the steering rack. This is pretty cool. gives you full assist when you are at low speeds, and once you are moving it gives you nearly no assist.

You can install the eclipse steering rack(which I did because its cheaper)
Then I suppose its going to give assist all the time.
I'll post a pick of it when I get some.

John, what is your input on the use of the stainless steel clutch line with the GS clutch line setup?

DOHCstunr
06-05-2010, 12:01 AM
John, what is your input on the use of the stainless steel clutch line with the GS clutch line setup?

I highly recommend the stainless clutch line. I ditched the accumulator reservoir and installed a 2g clutch line. I also took the restrictor out of the slave cylinder.
It may be personal preference. But I like to feel my clutch engagement down to the very last mm. I honestly couldn't call it a burden on a daily driver. It will also increase the accuracy and consistency of your shifts.

In my opinion the 7g should have came with a stainless line from the factory.

Regardless, its an ultra cheap mod.

mysticj
06-06-2010, 07:33 PM
Thanks for the input, I could never understand the reason for a secordary reservoir. My clutch pedal feels sloppy for being sitting[car]. I'll do the mod with some motor mount inserts and ball bearing mod for the clutch shift

Well, i've been driving the car for about two weeks now after the p/s rack install. Can't describe how much I missed this car.
Still have a slew of other parts I need to install but for now I'm taking my time and remembering why I do all this work in the first place.

probably because the knuckles he bought to get brembos cost and arm and a leg

have you thought about painting the wheels john?

DOHCstunr
06-26-2010, 11:57 PM
Well I was going to slap them on, but in the end I sold the stoptechs because they gave me a LOT of much needed Galant money to play with. That, and I didn't want to have mismatched brakes. black stoptech's up front, red brembo's in back(or even black brembos would still be a mismatch)
Another deciding factor was that the aluminum hat on the breath-taking two piece stoptech rotors... was about 5mm thicker than the stock brembo hat.
Which would have pushed my wheels out of the fender. As it is they sit perfectly flush and I didn't want to ruin that.
Would be different for an 8g/3g/9g/4g car.

As for the steering rack,
It was pretty painless. I put it off for a long long time because I thought it was going to be a big hassle.
In the end it wasn't very difficult. I guess the biggest hassle was dealing with all the grime and oil all over my drivers side suspension from the hydraulic fluid that was pouring out the main seal of the old rack.

Painting the wheels? Nah can't say I have. For whatever reason I love the factory tuned look I have right now. Its like I drive an SVT galant or something. As aggressive as it sits, it still looks like it could have rolled off of the assembly line that way.
The plan was to get some Evo IX SE wheels, and keep these for my winter.
But i don't even drive the galant in the winter so idk.
We'll see.

Clutch release fork. It may be hard to see it, but the pivot ball has wore deep into the socket on the fork. Good thing i have a brand new OEM fork and Fulcrum Ball. When these wear it greatly effects the travel of the clutch fork and can cause some serious engagement/disingagement issues. Especially at high rpms.

Here is my throwout bearing... or shoudl I say whats left of it. This is literally how it came off of my tranny. I'm pretty sure this may have also been a contributor to my inconsistant shifts and missed gears I've been encountering lately.

After reading through your post I see the need for a new clutch,
care to share what brand specs you will be using in the future as for a clutch?

I picked up a Fidanza alumnium flywheel and a Fidanza 3.2 clutch.

its a sprung 4 puck with kevlar friction material

the 4 puck design means less mass away from the center of the disc. which means less momentum and weight. This will allow for much quicker shifts.
The sprung hub and marcel still allow for smooth engagement.

The kevlar friction material apparently lasts for quite a while and can handle abuse.
Its kind of weird though. when I hold the new disc in my hands, and i touch the kevlar, the best I could decribe it as... is leather.
So idk how its supposed to hold up lol. But EVERYone says its great.

But EVERYone says its great.

my fidanza clutch went about 13k miles on a stock motor with spirited driving :(

Not sure how you managed to accomplish that lol. I'm betting on about 30k miles out of mine.
My ACT2100 lasted about 8 years, and multiple turbos.

I've had little time this week to work on things. Last night got the clutch and flywheel bolted up and torqued to spec. cleaned up the transmission and installed the new fulcrum ball and release fork. Greased up the sockets on the fork with moly based grease which works fantastic for my brakes, so i'm sure it will do the same in the bell housing.

Also replaced the Rear Main Seal with a new OEM seal, but didn't take any photo's.

This bad boy is my pride and joy

So I've put about 50 miles on the clutch so far.
Its a little early for a realy review, but first and foremost let me say that it has NEVER been so effortless to slide the shifter into any gear at any rpm. Going with the 4 puck has improved shifting dramatically.
Also, I know the kevlar has a ways to go before its broken in(900 mile manufacturer required), but the engagement is as smooth as stock. I haven't felt even the slightest hint of chatter. The clutch just grabs and goes. Nice and smooth. I think thats the benefit of the kevlar. Smooth engagement with tons of holding power, and durability.

The new pressure plate is firm but overall has a better feel to it than my old act2100. having installed a new clutch master, slave, release fork and pivot ball has really paid off. I did not shim the pivot ball if anyone wanted to know.
I'll keep you updated as new developments come in.

DOHCstunr
06-21-2011, 04:08 PM
Well I'm approaching the 900 mile mark and I'm still as happy as day 1. I probably won't launch it till at least 1500 miles but I'll be glad when I can start leaning on the right pedal again. I'm missing that boostilicious pull.

With all of this weight reduction my engine really sails through the powerband. It rises and falls so quickly and effortlessly. You do have to shift a little bit quicker because the rpms drop soooo fast between shifts, but when you rev it to downshift it is instant. Makes downshifting into any gear even going down 2 gears very seamless.

I wired up some bixenon h4 HID bulbs the other day so now I have quad high beams again. halogen h1 bulbs in the inner lens, and the bixenon HID bulbs in the outer lenses. If you guys have ever seen a h4 bixenon kit you know it comes with a special relay that keeps the low beam on while the high beam solenoid is engaged. Thats because on cars that come standard with h4 bulbs the low beam circuit turns off when the high beam is on and vice-versa. Well since our 7g's keep the high beams on with the low beams, all i did was run the solenoid wires over to the high beam harness and solder/spliced them in. As soon as I pull the high beams the halogen bulbs illuminate and the h4 shield solenoid engages. Makes for an incredible view on the expressway and ky backroads at night. I love it!

http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/9388/imag0202p.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/692/imag0202p.jpg/)

Note that these aren't faded or worn, its just how the microsuede appears to the camera lens from different angles. The EVO seats do the same thing.

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/4726/imag0203r.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/202/imag0203r.jpg/)

I tried to capture an angle that shows how well bolstered these GS seats are. They really are super comfortable and firm, and the side bolsters hold you in place quite well. This is one of the reasons I never really considered upgrading. But the price on the evo recaros was too good to pass up. So thats how it goes sometimes.
Even have kangaroo pockets on the back which I will miss.

Something I should have done years ago. I made a shift boot for the black GS but the shifter trim was destroyed in the wreck. So when I installed the short shifter in the white GS it of course interferes with the factory accordion boot(which i have two of now on my work bench on the shelf of misfit parts)
So as many of you know I've been driving without a shift boot for quite some time.
Picked up this boot off of eBay. Its black suede with blue stitching. Compliments the Evo Recaros and finishes off my interior. I might get an Evo Momo wheel at some point if I come across a deal, but for now I'm happy with my leather wrapped GS wheel. You can see my Momo pedals in the floorboard. An ex got them for me and honestly they are one of my favorite mods. I highly recommend getting a quality set of pedals and ditching the factory rubber nonsense.
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/3239/imag0366i.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/163/imag0366i.jpg/)
Shifter looks tall because of the 2g shift knob. Its not a OEM one its a weighted knob. Instead of the knob being nylon wrapped in leather, its like a lead alloy or a heavy pewter of some type wrapped in leather. I think it weighs in around 1.5 or 2 lbs. Its seriously heavy for its size and makes up for some of the leverage you lose when going with a short shifter. The extra weight helps when getting the lever from gear to gear.

It works great. Couldn't be happier. I went ahead and shaved back the left inside(part where the stock boot mounts) in order to create even more clearance. Now there is no interference and its actually made the action of the shifter quieter because the shifter is sealed away in the center console compartment the way it oughtta be.

As far as the VR4 wing goes....
Before I had one I always though there was something off with them.
Mainly because all I had ever seen were crappy internet pictures.
Because seriously what would the odds be of me seeing another vr4 wing on a 7g in the middle of Louisville, KY.
Even in the good pictures, i was never sold on it.

The VR4 wing is unique...its because its rare and not something you see too often to get to appreciate. So with the the handful of 7g's that have them here its hard to get "used to the look".

I will admit..when I first got it, I was a lil mixed feeling about it because there was something about the look of the car.

It was the stance..it didn't sit right, the wheel/tire combo made the car look "tall".

When I went to the the 5zigens with the slightly aggressive offset.......the VR4 looked right in place and that was the key to pull off the VR4 wing IMO.

Do you rub with 245's? is that your regular ride hight or do you adjust it?

The wheels came with a practically brand new set of 245's but I ended up selling them to a buddy. I wasn't willing to sacrifice tire noise for more lateral grip, not that my current tires are lacking in the grip department. They are just lightweight and very quiet, very smooth riding Y rated tires.

End of the road for this project. I've been in the Galant game for 14 years.
Be on the lookout for a part out thread. Unless one of you cool cats wants to make an offer on the car as one piece. Sad to see it go, and I know I'll miss it more than anything when its gone. But right now the car is at its peak. I simply do not have the time to go AWD.... So i figure its better to leave on a good note, than to let the GS fade from glory.

Sad to hear man, but you have made that car quite a spectacle. You were the reason why I kept my galant 5 years ago when I found pictures of your black GS and then found here and saw this white GS. Good luck with everything I would have loved to have seen this in person.

Is the car done in performance or car done as in some shit happen to it?

The car is great performance wise. I drive it every day and I still enjoy it very much. I've spend a lot of time and money making sure that this car has always been in tip top shape. I'm just to the point where if I don't swap to AWD or build some crazy engine... then its just going to stagnate. Its a great car and I love it, so it deserves better than to let that happen. If someone wants to buy it, great. Otherwise I'm going to part it completely and likely junk the title and chassis. Sounds horrible I know... but what else can a guy do? I could keep it for another 10 years if I wanted to. It really just boils down to me being so incredibly busy in my career that I simply don't have the time to take care of it, and the last thing you would ever see me do is let someone else turn a wrench on my beloved GS. lol.

OMG are you kidding me? Junk the chassis and oart out the car? This has got to be joke, that car is beautiful and you have kept it in pristine condition. Please reconsider and if it doesnt sell as a whole then just keep it. Its like destroying a piece of art...

Keep it, cage it, gut it and track it. Or send me the bumper cover and side skirts as a gift ;) Or the brakes ;) Seriously though, just turn it into a track toy and pick up something else to mess with for a daily. Or give me the parts. You know, either way.

I wish I was in a position to buy it off you whole but I cannot. I'd swap my drive train into it without a second thought. It is a great looking car.

What will be next?

DOHCstunr
08-07-2012, 11:05 PM
Well my options are part it out, or sell it outright. I'm not going to wait a year for someone to buy it. Honestly... the thought of someone who isn't a TGC diehard purchasing it and ruining it is no worse that me wrapping it around a tree.

I'm just trying to streamline everything. I have one car now that does everything and I really don't want the GS to sit on the backburner. Picked up a Legacy GT 5 speed limited.
I honestly thought I'd keep the GS forever. If someone were to come at me with $5k. I'd let it go. Which is a friggin deal considering you could just part it out for far more than that.

eclipsh
08-07-2012, 11:32 PM
Hah! A Legacy GT was what I was thinking I might go to if my Galant died. That or an E46. Still, there is something to be said for having a track toy that you can mess up or have down for an extended period and not worry about losing your DD. None the less, good luck however it goes.

Gut the inside and track it. That's what I am in the process of doing. Going from 2960+lbs down to 2860lbs is a hell of difference. Apparently you have the hunger for more and your currect setup isn't satifying your appertite...

It mainly just boils down to me not having the time. I could afford to paint it, AWD swap, all of those things. But I simply don't have the time to see them through. I do love the car. There's no tracks near me worth the drive and autocross is retarded expensive if you think about how many dollars you spend / how many actually minutes you get to drive... which will usually total well under ten total minutes. Followed by a couple of hours standing in the hot ass sun dodging cars and picking up cones.
I do love this car though.

At first thought I agree with this. On the other hand, Galants are really nothing special in the grand scheme of cars. It is a fun, inexpensive sleeper but the Legacy GT is better in pretty much every way other than curb weight.

DOHCstunr, I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision to come to. Best of luck with the sale.

little by little would amount to once or twice a year. I've had another daily driver for years. The white GS hasn't been driven in the winter or bad weather since I bought it. After going through the suspension and replacing it all with prothane and new hardware, I didn't want to ever have to deal with salt again. Also I didn't want to have to buy a separate set of tires for the winter. So from thanksgiving till March every year it stays nice and cozy in the garage.

AWD is only worth it, IMHO, if the car is being track on the weekends, doing rally races, becoming a show car(why?), or some 500+awhp goal is in mind to terrorize the streets. Other than that, say welcome to the additional weight the AWD will offer and more maintenance. And by the sound of it, more maintenance is something you don't have time for or want.

Pretty much. So I'm going with one car. I already have the Legacy GT. working on selling the Outback, then I will decide the fate of the GS. Hopefully someone snatches it up so I don't have to butcher it.

I can agree with that. I'll be honest If i still had the black one I would never ever sell it. As much as I really enjoy the white one (and in a lot of ways the white is a much better car), I've never really fell in love with it. Like I said, time is hard to come by. I alwyas thought when I embarked on my career and starting raking in dough that I would be able to do all the things I dreamed of with this car. Maybe some of the things that we have ALL dreamed of doing to a 7g. Alas, when the money comes, the time goes. I simply don't have the free time anymore. I just hope that someone who cares about and understands these cars takes it off my hands. I'd let it go for a steal. If it meant I didn't have to tear it apart... Lol because I don't have the time lol.

Yeah pretty rough huh?

Core support, hood, tbar, jdm lamp and corner, radiator.... I think windshield too. The amount of money he would spend replacing those parts would exceed the value of the car. Sitting right beside the Galant is his 99 GST. I think his plans are to take everything that will go into the GST and upgrade that DSM to a beast. As for the Galant specific parts hopefully he gets on here and lists them. I'm sure he'll make a deal for everything. There is a lot of rarities in that car including the engine harness and ECU setup. Which would make it rediculously easy for anyone to swap a 6 bolt into their 7G. I'm just glad it happened to someone other than me. Sheesh. Already lost one GS. I don't think I could have done all that labor a third time.

it sucks to see this happen after only a month!

but the parts that are busted up are cheap to replace with the exception of the headlight. i could get all the parts from the junk yard for literally under $300.

is the diamond edition trashed?
