So I believe my Optima Red Top is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. I'd like to install it as soon as possible but I have a question...

My alternator seems to be showing its age and is making more noise than usual during normal driving, more so when I come to a stop while still in drive. Perhaps it is just the belt, but my question is, would NOT REPLACING the alternator have a negative impact on my new battery?

Not necessarily. If the alternator voltage at cranking, under load, and not under load is adequate (14 volts or better) than don't worry about it.

My new battery is dandy but I am convinced the alternator still needs replacing.

Dave, you mentioned 14 volts, is that a typo and can anyone confirm stock voltage and amperage for the alternator. This particular one is 12V 85A, while others I saw were 90A, they might have been for the 4G64 though.

I'm just going to tell you that if you buy a new one buy it for the eclipse since they are 95A and galants I4's are supposed to be 85A, just a suggestion.

The alternator will only need to be replaced if it is no longer holding charge.

14v is right, once the car is running check the voltage on the battery itself if it says around 14v your alt. is good

Huh? The alternator holds a charge? What in the world are you talking about? *sigh*

You took what I meant in a different direction. The alternator gives off a charge.
