So today i have been starting the swap and i have the lower dash removed and took out the auto brake pedal. As i look at the auto brake pedal compared to the 3g manual one i see that the manual one is missing the bracket for the brake line and also for something else i am not sure what is called.

How do you install the manual brake pedal with these differences?

Also, i unhooked the shifter cable from the tranny and there is a bracket that is attached to it and i am having trouble getting that bracket off.

Any tips on what you may have done?

Another Q i have is when you are removing the shifter assembly, should you leave the shifter cable, key lock cable, and brake lock cable attached to it and just pull everything out while attached to the auto assembly or should you unhook it from the auto shifter assembly? I can't figure out how to detach those things from the assembly so that is why i ask.

Please let me know about these things and maybe give me other good advice i may need. Thanks.

the cable on the brake pedal is the shift lock to get out of park with the auto trans. You will not need it. Also you can leave the key lock cable in. Just make sure to zip tie the cable in a position that allows you to remove you key from the lock cylinder.

ok great that helps a lot. Also, there are a bunch of zip ties on the transmission with hoses and lines being held onto them. What should i do about these to get the hoses and lines off of the transmission?

I got one of the bolts for the shifter cable off on the interior, but there is that bracket that holds it to the transmission that i do not know what to do about. Anything on this?

just unbolt the bracket? pics?

not sure if I remember a bracket for the cable. But the hoses on the transmission are for the transmission fluid cooler in the radiator so they will end up being discarded. The wires are part of your engine wiring harness. They will be fine.

the bracket is holding the shifter cable in the middle and a harness on one side, it has a round thing in the bracket like you could squeeze a pliers on it to release it or something but it wont. Ill take a picture to show

If it is what i think it is, the bracket is U-shaped with the opening on top. If that's it, pull straight up to pop it out.

this is the bracket on the shift cable that attaches to the transmission. I tried pulling the cable up to get it to pop out, but it wouldn't budge.

Yeah, I'm 90% sure you have to pull it up and out. A pry bar or large screwdriver may help.

aight i will give that a try

when you pull out the automatic shifter assembly, do you pull it out with the 3 cables attached to it or do you detach all of them?

The only cable remaining on my shift assembly when I took it out was the gear selector cable.

is there a special way of removing them from the assembly because i cannot figure out how to get them off lol

You need to get a pair of pliers on those black tabs on the sides of the shifter cable, those tabs keep pressure on the bracket to hold the cable on, once you squeeze the tabs it will slide up and out

i have another question

what is the socket size of the nut that connects to the axle on the hub assembly side?

i do not have big enough sockets to fit it so i will need to buy one so this would greatly help. thanks

if its anything like my 2g, its a 32mm.

thanks...that sounds about what it should be

yea the socket you need is huge. I ended up just buying a full set of impact wrench sockets that goes from like 13mm to like 32mm or something. Might help you out in the end anyway

another question:

when you get the axle nut off, is there some way you have to pull or push to get the axle out of the hub assembly?

i was jiggling the hub around but the axle would not come out

put the axle nut on the axle about 4 or 5 threads, dont let the end of the axle stick thru the nut, hit the nut a few times with a hammer, that should free it up. Dont totally beat on it, because if you bend it, your F'ed, try spraying some WD40 of PB blaster penetrating oil in there to free it up too.

looks like you're running into the same issue I had. I even had the fun of watching a 30 ton shop press fail to press the axle out. But I will say depending on mileage, wear, etc... It may not be a bad idea to replace your hub assemblies and cv shafts while you are there.

well i am really having trouble getting the axle out of the hub assembly, ive tried putting the axle nut on the tip and tapping it to try to move the axle around a little, but it wont budge, and ive put pb blaster on as well. if i cant get the axle off i am pretty much screwed on this swap. it shouldnt be this hard to do.

Is there some way i can pry the axle out?

have you popped it off of the trans yet?

bsilver23

try PB blaster and using a torch to break the rust free. That has never fail for me, sounds like it just needs more convincing lol

I just used a rubber mallet on the axle. Mine wasn't exactly rusted, but was still a little reluctant to come out. It might feel like its stuck, but sometimes you need to find that exact angle of the hub to remove the axle

bsilver23

yeah i should have went and bought a mallet. I decided to use a hammer instead and now the end of the axle is warped and the axle nut wont go on.

just the first couple threads are all messed up

will i need to get a new axle because i messed up the ends from the hammer?

Mine were giving me the same troubles when I swapped. I had to torch the axles out of the hub and bought new axles and hub assemblies for both sides. Corrosion states FTW :-/

can you take a picture of the warpage? I had a dumb friend take a hammer to the axle too and warped the first 2-3 threads. I took a file and shaved off the first 3 threads and the nut was able to screw in again. Im never letting this guy near my car again

+1

If its only the first few you can file them down or shave them down with a dremel and grinding drum so the threads start on the good ones.

ok i will take a picture, it really isnt too bad, i can almost get the nut to screw on but it just wont stay
