So from reading other posts I've come to the conclusion that the cheapest way to get my wheel rewrapped is to take the original pattern to a seamstress/sewing shop, and get a new leather bounding made up from the pattern of the old one. Then I'd rethread it myself.

I could do this...

Can someone think of a better way?

On this note, does anyone know how to take the steering wheel off the column without anything stupid happening like the airbag goin off in my face?

About your airbag question, disconnect the battery before doing it, then it's rather easy and at least you know that your airbag won't deploy.

When I was looking up wraps for the steering wheel, I came across wheelskins. I'm not sure if you've seen this, but check it out -

Oh ya, I saw wraps, I just want the actual wheel redone. Thanks for the tip though.

The better and cheaper way is to buy another steering wheel but that's just me. I would not bother with re wrap.

How much do you think a new wheel runs? And do you have to go to a shop to get it done?

I feel the same way.

Check your local junk yard, that will prob be your cheapest option.
