Report: Mitsubishi Eclipse, Galant, May Die In 2013 (http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2010/09/report-mitsubishi-eclipse-galant-may-die-in-2013.html)

Mitsubishi (http://www.autoguide.com/new-cars/mitsubishi/index.html)’s mid-size offerings, already long in the tooth and outdated, may have to soldier on to 2013, after which point they will be unceremoniously executed as Mitsubishi shifts its focus from (http://www.autoguide.com/new-cars/mitsubishi/index.html)heavy, lumbering mid-size cars to small vehicles and electric powertrains. (http://www.autoguide.com/new-cars/mitsubishi/index.html)
Mitsubishi is currently lacking in capital, and is investing all of its cash in the development of a new global small car, that is slated to be production-ready by late 2012. Until then, the U.S. Mitsubishi range will undergo no changes, save for the introduction of the (http://www.autoguide.com/new-cars/mitsubishi/index.html)Outlander Sport (http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2010/04/new-york-2010-mitsubishi-outlander-sport-debuts-with-high-expectations.html) and (http://www.autoguide.com/new-cars/mitsubishi/index.html)iMIEV (http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2010/07/mitsubishi-hoping-to-introduce-imiev-at-below-30000-for-u-s-launch.html). (http://www.autoguide.com/new-cars/mitsubishi/index.html)
With no mainstream product in sight for another years, it will be a tough road for Mitsubishi to keep selling cars in the United States as the competition gets better and better.

well the galant has allready been replaced by the lancer in japan (known as galant foritis) and some other markets. the current galant 9g and eclipse 4g were designed by MMNA R&D which has since been ended as all new mitsus are being designed in japan. this is expected, and like i said before, since the normal, illinois plant is allready tooled up to produce these cars, they will continue to produce them until they are too stale to continue.

the next version of the eclipse will probably go by another name and the concept RA looked the part, although no guarantee they will ever produce it.

K so the Lancers are gonna be renamed to Galant Fortisis and the Ralliart to Lancer Evolution right?

K so the Lancers are gonna be renamed to Galant Fortisis and the Ralliart to Lancer Evolution right?

Highly unlikely. The Galant name will probably be done in the US market from the sound of it. I'm sure the Lancer will retain it's name.

For the Ralliart and Evolution, why would anything happen to them? They are both submodels of the Lancer.

I remember reading somewhere that starting in '11 or '12 they were going to change them in the US market as well.

as long as we get a new car that is small nimble and looks like a galant i dont give a shit what its called.

i cant wait to see what they are developing.

btw this is great news to me i thought mitsu was gunna go down the "bigger is better" route..

Well right now it seems they're going the Eco friendly route with imev. Mitsu has put a lot of their marbles behind that hoping it will be the next big thing since it's suppose to get some crazy high mileage. So I would expect that the galant might die and the eclipse still has at least 1 generation left in it.

That's a shame.. The new generation Eclipse concept looks so bad ass.

u mean the CONCEPT RA? yeah it looked even crazier in person when they brought it out for us at MOD08. the doors are powered and the car runs (not just a static model). it was pretty sweet.

I remember just drooling over that car. The wheels were MASSIVE, the fenders were flared like crazy, and the brakes were just huge. Everything was awesome

yesh it was very nice. and one of my contacts over at MMNA that organizes MOD (don't know if he is still there since they closed MMNA R&D) designed the interior; they sent him to japan for a few months to work on that car. he was explaining to me that the car is uncomfortable and totally impractical to drive because it was made to look awesome (like all concepts) but not be very user friendly/ergonomic.

the EVO doesn't even outsell the galant and eclipse in the US not to mention the regular lancer, so why would you think that? all the article says is the eclipse and galant (which r almost the same car) are going away because mitsu doesn't want to develop new versions... those incidentally are the only 2 cars left in the lineup that were designed in the US by MMNA R&D which has already been absorbed back into MMC making all future cars designed in japan... the 9G galant and the 4G eclipse were not even ever sold in japan and the lancer has allready taken the galant's place there (and is even called the galant fortis).

i like the look of the concept RA but the doors would be a PITA cus nobody around here leaves enough space when they park

also typing galant into google and seeing a lancer is real confusing....
