View Full Version : Poor gas mileage?

Hey guys,

I deliver pizza in my car, and I'm wondering if there's any way to raise my gas mileage. My last tank got me 16.8 mpg city. I think that's pretty poor coming from a 4cyl engine. For reference, my dad's 560hp supercharged cady cts-v gets 3 mpg less than I do for city driving.

Here's what I've already done to improve mileage:
- Tires inflated to 40 psi.
- I drive it like a grandpa (sloooow acceleration)
- Regular oil change intervals / maintenance
- Check engine light is on, but it's on because I'm currently missing the EVAP charcoal canister. No other codes reported.
- No one else rides with me, so that saves weight.
- I don't ride the brakes

Is there anything else I can do? I should be able to get at least 25 in the city. Any ideas?

Are all your sensors up to date with maintenance? Fuel pump? I personally never heard of inflated tires saving gas though lol.

Even though I'm a noob myself, I heard those could be issues from another post that was around about an 02 sensor someone tried to clean out but killed his MPG.

Oh btw before anyone flames you, use the search button.

sounds like you might need to do a fuel injection service, you know get all that carb and build up cleaned out. check the air filter too. hope that helps

Air filter is almost brand new and the spark plugs are NGK's - changed out around 25K ago. I always keep the car idling instead of turning it off. I figure this leads to less wear on my starter and also less gas. I do idle quite a lot, but idling shouldn't really use all that much gas.
Is it possible that because my charcoal canister is missing, gas is evaporating out of my tank faster than it should?

Maybe I should rephrase the first question on my thread:

What gas mileage do you get during city driving? (This question applies to everyone btw)

Is yours a 5 spd swap or automatic?

Either way, I'm losing 6mpg somewhere... I'm going to look into getting that charcoal canister replaced

I have found the culprit. Having the charcoal canister removed can apparently reduce mileage by 3-5mpg. So this is my problem.
