I went to autozone yesterday, and i had three spray cans I was going to buy. one was a plastic adheson, second was the color, and third was the clear coat. My instincts told me that I was right. I decided to ask the guy that worked there. He looked like he knew what he was talking about. He told me to go with Rustolium fabric and vinal paint. I first Sanded whiped everything down, and then cleaned again. I did three coats of the color. and I can see it cracking. I dont know what to do. Help!!!! i painted basicly all the silver parts and some black parts. (excuse my spelling)

It's called paint lift. It happens when there's not enough adhesion between the surface and the prime (adhesion promoter). Regardless of how well you prep it, the biggest culprit mainly comes from outdoor enviroment. Was it raining outside? Were you painting when there were plenty of humidity in the air? All this will cause it to lift. Next time you paint make sure it's clear/low humidy or find a place where there's a dehumidifier indoors. Of course, the only other place that have such thing would be a paint booth....

It sounds like you're painting trim pieces. If that's correct, then why are you using fabric and vinyl paint? Those are reserved for leather and cloth painting as they do not require any adhesive solution. Regular exterior auto paint or hi temp paint will do just fine.

when i painted the trim peice that happened to me. i searched on here and found out that you have to use a adhesive promoter to take the fake plastice wood grain off.

once you take that off you can sand it down again and prime and paint.

On top of what Gspot said- did you apply clear coat to the paint before it started cracking or did it crack without the clear. If your painting the trim you can just use:

Krylon Fusion.

No sanding or priming required
Bonds easily to most plastics, PVC, resin and more
Fast dry; fully chip resistant after 7 days
Features EZ Touch 360® Dial Spray Tip
Dry to Touch 15 minutes
Dry to Handle1 hour

here is a peice i painted with Krylon Fusion. YOu can see how smooth and rich the color is. it picks up the textures wonderfully. no clear coat needed. all i did was wash with soap and water first then dried it and sprayed.

I can understand that... I can't stop itching to do something to my car.

I bet so... But my trim pieces will look better black than the wood grain crap.

Spandex is not good for fat chicks.

i forgot when you spray dont make your first layer thick just spray it so you see the spatter of paint , that will become your primer so to say. wait 5 min then slowly fill in the areas. If i have time ill make a Video for people to see how to do it.

if you paint the wood trim parts and you dont take the fake plastic grain off it going to crack

it will only crack if you spray the paint like your trying oil down a bigbutt porn chick. if your paint sticks when dust spray at 12" to 18" and let it tack-up/handtouch dry first, when you lay a solid coat it will not crack. Spraying plastic is not a rush job you need to take your time and do it right. expect to spend a few hours sraying your trims if you want it done right. YOU MUST allow the paint to adhere and dry between coats. the colder the area the longer you wait unless you can bake it at 80 degrees. Dont try to get a solid coat in one shot this isnt a HVLP paint gun its rattle spray it does not mist the paint and spread it like magic dust you MUST take your time.

I think Keven means how the woodgrain pieces have a sort of plastic film over it that kind of bunches up and shrivels when the paint contacts it, making it look cracked. Any kind of spray wont prevent that from happening.

To be more technical its a Hardened gelcoat. The grain effect is actually in the plastic. it is possible to sand the gelcoat without hitting the actual plastic ; 2 full strokes 800 grit then semi smooth it with 4 strokes 1500 wet, leaving a smooth surface that still has enough pitting for the primer/paint to adhere. you can later reverse the the process if you wanted to go back to wood grain by removing the paint and buffing the gel before applying a new coat of gel or clear.

Ahh. I had a hard time until I sanded the heck out of the radio and shifter trim... in the end the surface was scratched after painting it. Looked decent but I just bought the OEM silver pieces. If i sprayed it, I could peel off the coat but I didnt have enough paint for that.

no need to sand... use soapy water and a scotch brite pad and rinse..
then do your first coat very light like someone else said and biuld on that.

if you are putting a clear coat on you have to do at the same time you paint it, or after about a week, but i prefer to do it all at the same time. if you paint it and do the clear coat the next day it will crack.

trust me i painted my entire interior.

i just used regular krylon paint and clear.
