The Galant Center nor Myself will be held responsible for the inguiry to you or damage to your car. This is for informational use only. Try at your own risk.

1. Get yourself five 194 SMD LEDs and three 74 SMD LEDs.

2. There are two screws at the top of the outer cover of the cluster. Remove these and gently pull that part out.

3.Now you will see four screws around the outside of the cluster. Take them out (be careful not to drop them) grab the cluster with one hand on each side. Pull gently while wiggling it a little. Be very careful. It should pull out pretty easily.

4.You will now have access to the back of the cluster where you will find the light sockets. The ones marked Blue are the ones that light the gauges. Remove the old bulbs and replace with SMD LEDs.

LED light have a positive and negative so if you have one that does not work try flipping it.

If you buy all the right size LED lights it is that simple.

Here are a few tips.

Do not get these.

get these.
http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac298/98mgalant/file/ezbl4114.jpg

I used the 194s in place of the 74s all you have to do is put the bulb in the 74 casing.

The tape is to push the prongs out a little further and help them to get good contact to the socket.

http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac298/98mgalant/DSC_5017.jpg

It also helps to tun them to the ends.

http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac298/98mgalant/DSC_5009.jpg

To do this you will need to remove the tack and speedo. This will also allow you to see if they are all working. It will not fit though the hole. You will have to hold the back of the socket while pushing the bulb in. If you do not hold it firm you will break the tabs on the socket. Ignore the tin foil.

http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac298/98mgalant/DSC_5013.jpg

If you do remove the speedo and tack it is a good idea to check that they work before putting everything back together. If not check the screws that hold them in if they are not in good they will not work but do not strip them out.

when you have all your lights in and see that everything is working properly put everything back together in the opposite of removal. BE CAREFULL.

I been looking into doin something like this.....I just need to get another stock cluster. I have reverse indiglos...but this looks so much better. Why did you take the front off instead of putting them in the back? What am I missing there?

*edit* its late...I missed the part where they dont fit! LOL, there isnt a type like those that do fit? I assume those are brighter than the ones you said dont get

98mgalant
12-04-2010, 09:27 AM
They do make smaller ones that will fit in the hole for the 74 sockets but I thought that these would be brighter so I retrofitted them. The ones that I said not to get only direct the light in one direction causing some areas to be brighter than others. Smd LEDs shine 360 degrees. I had the other kind and they are really bad.

yeah it looks sexy. Do they make em in colors? I was thinkin blue for me....I am gonna look for the smaller ones myself....I have taken guages off before and putting em back didnt go too well! LOL my gas guage no longer works!

98mgalant
12-04-2010, 07:04 PM
ya they make them in a lot of colors. I have amber ones in my parking lights. I know they have make blue green red and amber. have you checked the screws in the back of the gas gauge. The first time when I put the crappy leds in my speedo quite working so I messed with the screws in the back and that fixed it.You should take the screws out make sure they are clean and clean around the hole on the back were they get connection. Mine were not tight enough. but they are easy to strip.

Just unscrew it and pull em out. It aint that bad

Yo 98....these should work the same but fit into the sockets right? http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2FWLED-xHP5.htm#photos

and these 74's

http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2F74-xHP3.html#photos

That way I wouldnt have to take the guages off

I need to get some for the hvac, ash tray, and cigarette lighter. and ya the hvac is a pain to get to. even if you unscrew it, it wont come out very far.

Thanks for all the compliments.

ya they should. If you get them and they dont work at first dont freak out at my trouble shooting part about tape and turning the prongs, but as far as the size ya they should fit.

EDIT: those are a little pricey I would check eBay first.
EDIT2: didnt find any cheeper on ebay.

I think that you will need five 194s and three 74s but don't go buying any until I double check. I'll let you know for sure later.

I went and looked it's three 74 and four 194. If your going to get them for the ash tray hvac and other things you will need eight more 194s and four more 74s.

I think I will eventually get the others. But I am looking for another guage cluster then I am gonna do the do. But I was looking at switching the dome light, the light in the trunk (yes damn it!) the license plate bulbs and my city lights in my world specs

I think the ones in the first link will be to long. They will hit the back of the gauges

the second ones will only direct light in one direction and cause hot spots.

Third link will work.
Im on my iPod right now but in a little I will find some and post links.

I ended up ordering the ones from the third link and they are a different color than the others that I bought but I used them in the ac/heat controls and cigaret lighter so it's not that big of a deal for me but you would not want different colors in the gauge cluster.

Predat-R I really have no clue. I've never had indiglo so I don't even know what they are made of. Are the numbers transparent?

you can also do the ignition ring and the glove box of course. I put a green 3 smt 74 in the igntion ring. Looks sweet. I bought 2 pairs of the green 74's and put two greens in for the turn signal indicators, and had one spare. Sooner or later I might get some red ones for the CEL, brake light, door ajar, and a pair of amber ones for the ABS light and the low fuel. But seems like a waste of dough. I'll probably get to that down the road when I'm bored and don't have enough cash for anything major.

Just top off gas tank and insert the the needle on the Full line just dont press it down too much or it won't move.

Joker96
03-28-2011, 05:28 PM
does the needle have a max and minimum? i mean so it wont go all the way around? i dont know f u understand what i mean

Da_Prodigy
03-28-2011, 05:41 PM
What I'm saying take your car to the gas station fill it completely with gas, once it's completely filled, take off the needle and just re-insert the needle at the full line. Just make sure not to press down all thr way because if you press the needle all the waydown it sometimes gets stuck. There is a max and minimum mark but if you don't align the needle right in the beginning it's obviously going to be off.

Can we see more before and after pics of the LED upgrades you've done? I'm thinking about doing the blue on the cluster and ignition ring (that could change...) but at this point I'm more concerned about getting the right amount in the right size. Where's the best source for both the internal (cluster/ door/ HVAC...) and the running/ brake LED lights? If I'm going to do it, I might as well do it all! One site had them for $5.95 US each, so if anyone has found a site that has them for less then speak up.

Thanks!

I get mine off eBay. I've had pretty good luck with eBay. As for the amounts and sizes for the cluster it's already in an earlier post. If your a 7g then look for the bulb list for all the bulb sizes. I can try to get some updated pics but the only before and after pics are the ones that are already in this thread. I now have 32 smd panels in both dome lights (see sig)and the trunk.

Here's the link for the ones I used for the interior. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Light-Lamp-Panel-36-SMD-LED-T10-Dome-Bulb-BA15S-Adapter-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem33674c7271QQitemZ22077 6395377QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccesso ries#ht_3718wt_948

I think they are bright enough that if you bought 2 they would light up the gauge cluster. One for each side. Now I don't know for sure but if it did work that would be cheaper. It would require you to take the gauges out completely inorder to mount them inside.

After looking at my cluster and yours it looks like I have a light where you are geting the dark spot and you dont. You could conect a light to the working light with some wire and glue it into place or something. And ya I have never seen that button in my life.lol

that button is actually really cool, being able to start in second in the snow and ice would have been awesome while auto.

i may seem like a noob but what LEDs do i need after reading all these different types. i will only be doing the gauge cluster so only the LEDs for that are what i need clarified

Alright noob.lol you need 3 72 size LEDs and 4 194s. Make sure to get SMD LEDs with multiple light diodes on them because the others cause really bad hot spots. My advice to you and anyone else doing this is to use 8 194s and modify them like on the privious page. When you get different sizes you take a chance on the color being slightly different. I bought some for my hvac, lighter and other things that were supposed to be the same color and they were totally different. But you have to go in from the front if you use all 194s. If you need any more info let me know.

Yep. But FYI white is the color I have. Super white is alittle more white but I like the white myself.

Did this with sharpies

Note on resetting the needles figured this through trial and error

Note where all you needles idle at my stepper motors powered off the pin angles below zero
For the tach if you know your car you know your idle
For the speedo put the car in gear let it roll set at or a tad above zero
Gas just remember where it was.
Honestly my temps still off ... I hope starts at hot

PS don't crash in the speedo step

Its on my mods list I do all my internet from a phone so .. Sharpie mod here goes .. pull it all apart as explained, then color the back of the gauges with desired colors for desired places I did blue lines and light blue numbers, for the needle just thoroughly copperhead clear center circle underneath. I just grabbed another set of faces. If you use clear Scotch tape to create another layer of color its clearer .. ... .. also I want to post an infinity interior amp tutorial. I may need to type it up an let a vet host it

Here ahttp://i1217.photobucket.com/albums/dd399/master_visionary/IMG_20110901_225138-1.jpgre my gauges the needles are brighter in person.
