I dont know if this is common in galants, but my [automatic] gears change at a relatively high rpms, which is normally around 2700rpms. I can also control my gears a bit by letting off the gas by a bit during a steady acceleration, and then the next gear kick in sooner.

-PS
My first gear started making a subtle whinning noise, it goes away once i go to second, what could be causing this?

Are you flooring it the whole time? Or do you ease into it?

my only option for u would be to get a tune up but u might need to have the tranny looked at cuz my galant shifts at about 2300-2500 rpms

If I'm hard on mine, it won't shift til 5k rpm. Otherwise it shifts earlier than that.

Depends on your driving style. As for the whine noise. Go get a flush and fill done on the trans and see if that fixes the issue.

Im guessing you have high miles, Not to spook you but trans could be going eventually also. Never know, and its hard to tell unless you have sliping or slamming at shifts.
