View Full Version : 2000 2.4L Oil Pump Gear - where's the hole?

I need to replace the gear on the oil pump on my 2000 2.4L. I've read that there's supposed to be a hole on the side of the block where I can stick in a screwdriver to stop the oil pump gear from turning. I can't find the damn thing. I've read through threads on here and most say it's on the back of the block (closest to the firewall) but I don't see any plugs, bolts, or have any holes that will allow the screwdriver to go in any more than an inch or so.

Where is it located exactly?

The diagram in my Haynes book isn't much help, and the only other diagram I've found online (http://www.vfaq.com/proj-pics/Tbelt/96-013.gif) doesn't help much either.

Can anybody provide a roadmap? A picture would be awesome...

Have a look at the attached picture, where the arrow is pointing it on the side of the block a few inches behind where the oil dipstick goes into the block. Is that the hole?

vfaq is a DSM site. the info there is true for 8g, but the engine is flipped at 180 deg. So it you have that hole in the rear of the block for a DSM then that hole would be in the front for 8g.

Here i posted it in this topic

Oh, ok. That makes more sense...

I had a look and I see one bolt in the block right under the starter. That seems to line up with what's in that other thread. Is that right?

yeah that bolt is located on the balance shaft barrel, undo it and stick a screw driver in there. look at the other thread for more info.

Oh man, this is a good one.

So I found the hold, slid a screwdriver in there to stop the gear from moving so I could remove the old one and put on the new one. I put the nut on the shaft, tightened it up and then went to remove the screwdriver.

It won't budge.

So I'm thinking that the shaft is hard against the screwdriver, all I need to do is turn the oil pump gear back a little bit to release the pressure and the screwdriver will slip right out. No dice, I go to turn the gear back and the nut comes loose but the gear stays right where is it. I tried putting another nut on the end of the shaft and then turning the original nut but there's not enough threads for the second nut to get a grip.

Any ideas or suggestions? I'm sure somebody else had to have run into this before, right?

is the belt on it?

if it is then try turning the crankshaft back and forth until you get that screwdriver loose

No, the belt's not on. I was getting ready to put the belts back on when I realized that the new oil pump gear wasn't lined up properly so I went to pull the screwdriver out so I could turn it and found it stuck.

Grab it by the gear and turn it back. You can use a towel or even the old t-belt

either way, thats weird that it locked like that. Try spinning and pulling at the same time

NFG so far. I can't turn the gear, I've even tried a pair of channel locks on it.

I was able to pull the screwdriver out about half an inch but its still in there. Is this only for the oil pump gear or is there another that could have an effect on this?
