This is normal. Many of us have it, and it's not limited to the Galant. Seems our Eclipse siblings have it too. If it really bothers you, you can try to have the dealership address it with their 3-2 hard shift programming. Mitsubishi knows about it, no worries your transmission is fine.

I have a 01 ES and the transmission is doing some weird things. If you have to come to a complete stop after coming off an hill or incline the transmission acts like it does not want to completely downshift. It will downshift itself to 2nd gear and hold when you are at a complete stop. Then the car will slam into first and take off when you hit the gat to try to leave. What in the llll is wrong with my baby.

Once again...completely normal. Many if not most Galants came from the factory that way, and it's not limited to the year made. My car does both, which scares the crap out of me, but I live with it.

id like to get rid of this if at all possible, it used to shift nice and smooth before up until now, about how much does it cost to get fixed?

Remember, your transmission learns your driving style and adjusts its shifting accordingly. So if you're driving aggressively, your shifts will be firmer and closer to redline. If you drive like granny (Ralifan) then your shifts will be smoother and more like the family grocery getter.

If you want to make your PCM re-learn your driving techniques, just reset it and start over. Disconnect your negative battery cable for 10-15 minutes to reset the PCM. Then reconnect it and drive normally.

I found something about Galant 8G V6 auto transmission on NHTSA's website. The summary says:

MITSUBISHI MOTOR SALES OF AMERICA, INC. HAS DETERMINED THAT A CERTAIN NUMBER OF AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION EQUIPPED V-6 VEHICLES MAY HAVE A DEFECT IN THE TRANSMISSION. AS A RESULT, THE A/T MAY SLIP WHEN UP SHIFTING FROM SECOND TO THIRD GEAR. *TT

here's the URL. ('http://www.nhtsa.org/cars/problems/tsb/tsbssum.cfm?BulNo=061000%20%20%20%20%20%20&SeqNo=181&make=MITSUBISHI%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%2 0%20%20%20&model=GALANT%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%2 0%20%20%20%20%20%20&Year=2001')

Just do a search for a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant under automatic transmission and go through every one of the bulletins you get...I think there's 5 TSBs. For me it was the last one that had this information.

Yeah, mine did it too. One thing I did that made it better was the reset/relearn procedure. During the learning process, I drove like an old lady on sleeping pills. It rides/shifts much smoother now under light or heavy acceleration.
