After I've finished assembling Super VR-4 Galant successfully. I thought of doing something special. Something no one has done it b4.
Here is my new project.
RWD 98' Galant with Toyota Supra 2JZ-GTE Engine.
Estimated Time: 60 Days ( Hope everything goes well )
So far I've fitted complete Supra's Front Setup
( Engine mounts, Steering, Rotors, Coilovers, ... )
And Super VR-4 Rear Setup
( Fuel Tank, Rotors, Differentail, Coilovers, ... )
also I made custom housing for the rear drive gearbox ( 1JZ 5 speed Manual )
Here is my new ride

yeah thats the half tempted part, better idea to wait till it runs. and its a site I havent been on in like 5 years so who knows if hes even on it anymore. Might stick it up on a local car forum instead just to show the Honda guys.

Will the rear end take all the power it will see?
I know for the 90-99 AWD Eclipse etc. sold in the US the rear end can't handle a lot of power on its own. I don't recall any numbers though just that they break. How will yours hold up?
Stewi
09-20-2011, 08:26 PM
Dope man. Stick with it and keep updating us. I would imagine your gonna wanna get some type of Ford IRS 8.8 rear or something close to that in terms of power handling. There is no way a stock diff, even a built up EVO diff isnt gonna take that abuse.

The 9 would work but the 8.8s are less expensive, very durable and easier to retrofit into a vehicle with IRS. You could be adapters to fit a 9" into an IRS but it can get a little pricey.
WHy not just use a Supra diff.....
Because if your custom designing a rear subframe or custom adapting a rear subframe, you should adapt it to part that is superior in quality and durability. Supra guys retrofit their cars with ford rear ends, the idea is, if your going to spend the time and money to re-engineer something, during the process you should weed out any weak points.
Skyforger
09-22-2011, 05:54 PM
True, but if Supra guys are doing Ford 9 inch swaps, I'd say it's worth the extra time and money to have a good bulletproof rear for such a capable motor.

I'm glad to see this being built but it will be some time be for this thing is functional... All that speed means you're gonna need a lot of brake power.... This will def be a force and please take all precautions cause this is one of those ideas where I'll say... "With great power, comes great responsibility" You need to be on your P's And Q's with this one...

^ I was gonna say that. Didn't wanna make my post come off the wrong way, but it if it is made of strong quality metals, should hold up.
OP, did shop tell you the material? Or Give you any numbers like how much torque and HP it's rated at?
eclipsh
10-13-2011, 08:24 AM
It isn't just torque and horsepower, it is rotation speed, as I found out the hard way. With the gear ratio of the current rear end and the tire height that thing will be spinning really fast at 60-80 mph. My drive shaft failed at around 75 mph and it scared the piss out of me (thankfully not literally).
That said, this one has to be shorter than the one I used. It also looks like the diameter to length ratio is worse though. Without using a driveshaft calculator I wouldn't wager a guess as to it's viability. Did the shop making it know how fast it would spin or other details?

Yikes. That driveshaft looks small. What material is it made from? Plain steel? Chromoly? Do you know the wall thickness? Judging by the floor tiles which are commonly 12"x12" that shaft is about 5 feet long. I am using 3.5" diameter aluminum on a shaft thats about 8" shorter and only delivering half the engines power to the rear. I would be very very cautious using that shaft you have there. Make sure you run a safety loop.

LOL, we're not trying to be haters, it is a great build. We just want you to be safe. When a drive shaft goes out it can be very dangerous. I was lucky mine didn't hit the gas tank or get under a tire to spin or flip my car. Mine bounced and lodged between the car body and the exhaust. It beat the hell out of the unibody in the process, leaving a big dent in the passenger front floor pan. It struck right at the corner where the steel was strongest too so there was a lot of force behind that hit.
Wall thickness is much less important than drive shaft diameter vs. length. A quick Google search for driveshaft calculator pulled up this one:
http://www.wallaceracing.com/driveshaftspeed.htm
With a 53 inch shaft at 2.5 inch diameter you'll handle plenty of torque. The problem is the critical speed. I don't have the calculations lying around for what our drive shafts spin at but I know that it was up around 5-6K rpms at 65-70 mph. If you drive at or above the critical speed of a driveshaft for long harmonics can cause it to start wiggling and tear it apart. They have some pretty good explanations on the site. To calculate your drive shaft speed you need your tire diameter and rear gear ratio. I'm sure you can get that stuff off the web quickly too.

I've decided to temporary keep the current drive shaft.
Since this engine has HKS 272 Cam, Siemens 650cc Injectors, Brian Crower Valves/Springs, ...
It must be tuned b4 so we can run it safely.
For now, I will start with Idle tuning.

Good choice with the AEM. When you setup your boost settings using the boost solenoid make sure you tune the boost controller settings on the street. From my experiences it's more accurate than the dyno since the dyno can never duplicate driving loads exactly as they are during real driving

I went to the tuning shop and he asked me to install the exhaust system b4 we start tuning.
It does make sense, I was excited and inpatient.
Since this car is missed up, it has supra's front and galant's rear, it wont be easy to get ready exhaust system, so i will make a custom one
What is best material for exhaust piping ? Stainless, galavanized or aluminum ?
unclepaulie

3" aluminised steel for dollar saving, or 3" stainless for bling bling.
or titanium...
Stewi

3" stainless downpipe to 3" aluminum exhaust is my next step. You need stainless close to the turbo due to the high heat but the rest being aluminum really saves on weight

So far it cost me 18K USD ( 5K KD ) & still increasing >.<

Once this car is finished. I'll add it to "Garage" with every modification/price

I'd imagine that the reason its soo much money is due to the cost of those parts in Kuwait is substantially higher due to less availability of parts and taxes/charges on importing and shipping.

However, I see very bad end results on this one. Simply put, the short amount of time this was done in REALLY shows. I dont sacrifice quality and safety over a timeline. I think this is a awesome ass build. Kudos to you for getting it done. However, these fellas bring up a point not to be taken lightly, quality fab work takes time. I'd rather have used some angle iron than cut the Supra trans support and welded in extensions, that reeks of ratchetness. While that exhaust isn't gonna be the final one, the fact that it even got installed in that condition and manner suggest a rushed job, and that's dangerous. I hope it all pans out, because this is otherwise one awesome build.

I think he's just trying to put things together for the moment being
next time you do exhaust bends, fill the pipes with sand and close off the ends. ducktape works for sealing both ends to achieve mandrel looking like bends. either way excellent job

Also I would please please pleaaaase double, or even triple check your work bc this is an awesome project you have going on and last thing you want is fix damaged parts on this hard work you put into, annnd one more thing what did you use to bend the exhaust piping? othan than that, amazing job man. i can not wait to see this started...I do not think any one had the balls to do this.

love the idea, a little worried about the execution.
These mods would not pass certification here in New Zealand, and if you look at any galant 4wd chassis, even with 3" exhaust, they dont run in the tunnell, your best bet would be to run it straight down the right hand side of the car, from the turbo back and have it exit on the other side of the bumper, like an evo, relativly straight.
Also that diff wont last 5 minutes, get that out of there in favour for a LSD inside a STR wagon rear casing.

I wanna know what wheels those are
And if that Toyota engine ever explodes

Hi everyone,
It has been a while. I had other priorities in my life and I had to shut this project.
I stopped this project at the point where I was tuning it on Dyno year and a half ago.
The clutch was slipping and the gearbox had blown up.
Here we go again
