I'm trying to remove my axles so I can finish up my 5-speed swap, but they are really rusted onto the hub. I tried putting pb blaster and hitting them with a hammer, prying them off, and an axle puller but they don't budge. Is there any other way to remove them?

I think I'm going to do this too, but just get new hubs and axles. Anybody know a good place where I could get them?

First thing to ask is do you have a good compressor if then here is what I did
First you need a torch map gas at min. Propane doesn't get hot enough heat the hub around the axel try not to heat the axle this let's the hub expand giving some room then a good air chisel or you can try a good hammer drill in just hammer till it starts to move but pbblaster should help out.

if you dont want to buy specific supplies or have the time to do it this way, take it to a local shop and pay $15 to have them pressed or heated out.

Here's some pics of the passenger axle and hub:

The one on the driver's side you can kind of see the teeth of hub where the axle goes through.

that right there my friend is melded together, it will need to be removed by a press and in that condition one of the components can break.

BRB, going to spray my shit down now in hopes that it NEVER looks like that, that's some strong fusion there.

the biggest issue is that theres splines in there so not only are we talking top meld but also inner side melds, just a big metal glue dump... you not only gotta free up the edges touching the inner wall of the hub but also the walls inbetween each spline-hub/axle-......

eat some cookies while fondling some titties,, wont make the parts come apart but youll feel better about how your day is going.........

hows he gonna use the old knuckle if its still on the hub and the hub's frozen to the axles?

I see this all the time at work. by the time you press it out all 3 components will have either bent or broke.

The hubs can be removed from the knuckle by un bolting it, if he's unable to remove the hub from the knuckle then he would need to replace all three components,

edit/ hes gona have to replace the knuckle due to the axle
since its sandwich in between each other,

If the axle is welded to the hub, the hub to the knuckle could be worse. Toyota hub assemblies are mostly pressed in so when they get this bad the knuckle either gets fucked or bent. The Prius have bolt on hubs but when we cant get the axles out of the hubs 9/10 the hub is even worse on the knuckle and we end up pressing it out, usually the ears on the knuckles break off. Thank God, Mitsubishi has bolted hubs but like, I said if the axle is stuck in the hub the hub will most likely be stuck in the knuckle. ESPECIALLY if the car has lived it's life in the northern part of the country.

ok so he just cant replace the hubs and axles, unless hes able to separate the them from each other, or save the knuckle

heres a pic
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v55/FinaL_data/untitled-1.jpg

the hub bolts onto the outside of the knuckle and the axle runs threw it, if he was to unbolt the hub it wont do him any good because the axle is welded to the hub

hope this helps out

OK so EVERYONE can understand.....You can NOT remove the Knucle from the assembly while the AXLE is still inside the hub. The axles spline ring will not allow the hub to slide over it.

Also you can not get a socket properly over two of the bolts for the knuckle after inserting the axle theres no clearence for it.

So I can't remove the hub, axle, knuckle all together as one piece?

jubeiaire
07-31-2012, 01:36 PM
you can remove it all as one solid pice like i have in the picture. take the axel out of the transmission pop the nuckle off of the lower control arm ball joint unbolt the tierod end for the rack and remove the bolts holding the knuckle to the strut arm. i may be forgeting something else thats bolted to the knuckle if not thare you go.
