Hehe! I'm impatient.
The other hose is going straight to the intake barb

01-20-2013, 01:19 AM
I would move the catch can hoses bro. I would run it from the PCV to the can, then to the manifold. I was having trouble with oil being pushed out of the PCV into the manifold before I put a catch can on the car.

Really fast build though, cant wait to see numbers on the auto. You going to 5-speed it RIGHT?

Ivory8g
01-20-2013, 01:25 AM
Holy shiet! Good looking out. Lol my buddy hooked up the can while I was finishing up and I didn't even notice! I usually go from the egr to the intake so there is a good amount of suction to pull the oil out. We were tired LOL.
HAHA OF course I'm going manual. I'm curious for the numbers before and after tranny swaps.

Personally I think that was the perfect choice. That's the first thing I noticed when I looked for the fmic in the picture...just enough to give those in the know a clue, there's some things going on behind the scene. Tuning isnt that hard. Its reflexive just like the human body. Or at least thats how I think of it to keep everything straight.

Sooooo quiet yet deadly, Ebay exhaust + T3 turbo = win. I'm amazed I havent thrown a CEL cause there is no cat and no spacer in there. This of course threw the open dp tune all out of wack. Did some quick 20-30 minute tuning. Scaled the maf to comprehend all the air, then did some timing/fuel adjustments. I'll play with trims and stuff tomorrow.

So I grabbed one of the pulls I did today (have been tuning up to 5k rpm so far) and threw it in Virtual Dyno for the hell of it to see what I get and to my shock.....

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/LOLOL.jpg

WTF?! Drivetrain loss on the auto tranny is probably about 20%.......If the car was manual swapped it would probably be around 12%. 20%-12%=8% difference......

223 whp and 257 wtq would more than likely be around 241 whp and 278 wtq...........LOL already beat Ivory's power level.

Flashed evo maf scaling and smoothing and whatnot. Car idles a lot smoother as well as pulls better through the rpms. Adjusted the timing some more as well as fuel.
Last night I got the barometer totally wrong. Definitely not 24 inches here anymore. Its 29-30. That makes a huge difference lol. Makes more sense with what it feels like. I was beginning to worry that being in the evo was throwing my sense of power off or something.

I also took out the spring in the wastegate and found out it was only a 5 lb spring!!!! LOOOOL not bad at all for 5 lbs of boost and sitting at 200 whp! Pulled the 5lb spring out and put in the 15lb spring. Hehe, stay tuned.

Just out of curiosity about how much you think is safe to make on stock internals..cause I'm sure on stock internals it all comes down to tuning (and maintenance), and that's one of the reasons I like this build so much and that you tune it yourself. Tuning to me is like magic... I don't understand it but it makes things happen lol

I would say 300 whp is the most anyone should push it "safely" there are a few things you can do to squeeze the power out though.

On that note....

Slim, how tha hell the car puts down over 100 more foot-pounds than horses? That's crazy!
Tuning and I swear I have a thing for picking 64 powered cars like this. Ivory was the same way!

Ok so today as soon as I turned it up the car got really angry and the rpm's would seriously "hang" at 4.5k rpms and didnt want to go passed that. I knew it had to be something with the maf or scaling or something. After some troubleshooting (going over logs and seeing the maf capping out at 700 ish hz of airflow) with my buddy Matt (SPD_FRK) He was pretty certain it was the maf clipping as the V6's needed this to be defined in their xml to un cork the limit of airflow throughout the powerband so to speak. Sad day I didnt have that.
I hit up Isaurio and asked for his prowess in defining that for me and BIG BIG thanks to him he took care of it right away. Thanks a million bro you are super skilled! :)

I flashed the car and tuned away......10 minutes later.....

Its Virtual Dyno. Keep in mind I've road tuned about 25+ evo's and this is within 1-2 whp of the mustang dyno local to me. It was spot on with my evo as well. The numbers also match up with my calculations. Especially the airflow hz as well as the injector duty cycle. I calculated around 70-80% at 300 whp on suby 440's and I'm at 73% idc. I will be taking this to a dyno when she's all done though just to concrete it.

I've watched the guys put tint on my cars twice. They use a clear plastic film and put it on the outside of the windows and cut to get the window's shape, then they lay the cut clear over the roll of tint and cut the tint to shape. They use a large piece of lexan on a stand to cut the shape out. The tint isn't sticky, and they spray the windows with a soapy solution to be able to move the tint into place and squeegee the bubbles out. Then they hit it with a heat gun and then it sticks. It looks simple. It took two guys about 30 minutes at a relaxed pace to do all my windows.

The back window is the one that scares me a little. That is going to have to be spotless.

So because I am OCD I adjusted timing today ever so slightly to maintain consistency under WOT. 13-15* nice smooth climb everytime. If anyone is still on the older version of evoscan and hasnt updated. you need to update! It's sooo sick!

Hell no youre not! I saw a clean dover white 8gb the other day and I forgot I was driving for a sec LOL. Its the memories tied to the car that make it hard.

update of the day.....
So today I decided I was going to go take some photos of the car in its current state with the slr and tune fuel trims.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/5FF22231-C654-411B-BE36-BA283E96D310-6731-000002C28D318536-1.jpg
All dialed in.

Went and washed the car and was on the way to one of my favorite shooting spots. All of a sudden on the highway a hawkeye sti and a bugeye wrx pull up super hard on either side of me. wtf?! They wont look at me but I see them starting to brake boost LOL. Took the car from 3k - 4.5k and blew their doors right off LMAO!!!!! I've never let the car rip on the highway. Keep in mind max torque in my car is @4250. I barely got into it LMAO. For the next 10 minutes I was on the highway they stayed about 10 cars back and wouldnt pull up. Tumbler feels amazing on the highway!
Made it to the spot right as it started DUMPING snow. I was going to shoot the exhaust video but it was horrible at the spot :( Decided to wait another day.

No prob man! ^

Alright! Went to the dyno today and found out several things about the car.
-To hell with electronic boost gauges when at elevation
-Tumbler is a lot lighter than I thought
-A lot of shops around these parts put in a SKY HIGH correction factor to keep people coming back

Sorry I didnt get video as I was running the dyno from inside the car and tuning. Spd_frk and I found an awesome dyno with a very honest owner who wasnt interested in pumping up peoples ego's but sold the validity of his dynojet. It reads from a weather station on the top of the building at the time of the run for maximum accuracy. After the test I've got to say I believe him as I know mustang dyno's that make exorbitant numbers just to have my lower reading car walk them LOL. I always wondered how that happened. Now I know.

So since I'm at elevation the electronic sensor in the old boost gauge was giving a false reading. I'm already in the process to switching to a mechanical boost gauge. I thought I was running 15lbs. I was only running 12 LOL!
So I immediately knew there was nooooo way I was at 300 whp and decided to see how close I could get on 12 lbs.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/120CD184-A383-4101-91E6-9D6D00486E00-14653-00000749A19887AD.jpg
The dyno had two O2 sensors go bad HAHA. I'm running 11.5-11.8 afr. After I took it home I pulled the external wastegate and put in the heavier spring. This should land me in the 15-17 psi range and get me to that 300 mark.

So I took the final log home and plugged it into virtual dyno to see what I got.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/dynojetisamustanghaha.jpg
I need to get my car on a scale to confirm that weight. Thats hard to believe the car weighs that little with me in it! Crashbar, stock exhaust, rear seats, carpet, some molding, sound deadening removal really cuts down the weight that much?! only one way to tell.
This dynojet reads like the comparative mustang dyno around the USA! This is one of the newest software models and has a 3500lb roller. Dynojet got sick of all the varying numbers with their product and locked it down so it reads like a Mustang (heartbreak dyno). Its only a heartbreak cause its not inflated and giving you correct numbers LOL! Apparently with virtual dyno when you are at elevation you should never need to use custom correction factors or sae correction.
I'm pretty stoked with the numbers and my tuning though. For 12 lbs 255 is legit on a "heartbreaker" *laugh* and the auto tranny. I learned a lot about the local dynos today as well.

Ivory8g
02-01-2013, 09:51 PM

I was guessing around 305-310.

I was looking at logs and threw them into Evoscan 2.8 and was surprised. I was blown away at the accuracy.
This is the run I did on the dyno.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/comparativedynopro.jpg

Now I was inspired to see what it would tell me about my car now. Went out and did a 3rd gear pull (screw you auto tranny)
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/newcomparativedynopro.jpg

as you can see.... I maxed out the airflow in hz across the whole powerband at 1600HZ LOL, 89% Idc (Time to get bigger injectors), and 270 load. I knew the car felt faster but damn. Its aaaaaallll top end now. We'll see when I get back to the dyno, what the dyno says.

yeah mate the "gt series" flanges that I am using are the same as the 16g ones except the bolt holes are bigger. The weird thing is all the mitsu family turbos td02-td06 should be using the same flange.

So big thing today. Some of you may know about "krank vents" if you dont they are essentially a one way valve that modifies the the oem PCV system to prevent air from entering the crankcase through either the PCV valve or the intake hose.
The PCV system is there to remove "blow-by" (unburnt fuel-air mixture that "blows passed" the piston rings on the compression stroke) from the crankcase before the gases can contaminate the engine oil or increase the crankcase pressure.
Positive crank case pressure can cause smoking turbos, blown out dipsticks, piston rings that wont seat properly..etc. The problem exists because the NA pcv valve was never designed to block boost from entering the crankcase. Once boost hits, air flows back through the pcv valve and pressurizes the crankcase causing the before mentioned problems.

Lesson over, I had bought a kit of "specialized" one way valves from a company called ET-Performance. Great product and worked like a charm on my evo. I started getting some puffing from my exhaust on the tumbler so I immediately knew what was going on. However I didnt want to spend $110+shipping for something I saw as glorified one way valves. I had a company make some one way valves to my specs out of billet aluminium and got them today. Popped them in and lo and behold they work exactly the same. They have barb fittings so all you do is splice them in line and youre done. If any of the boosted guys are interested let me know and I can have some made for you too if you want.

mko
02-11-2013, 08:10 PM
PCV valve is a PCV valve bro it works the same way for all cars. Any PCV valve should close when positive pressure (boost) is present at the manifold regardless its a turbo or n/a application. If yours didnt seal then you had a faulty valve.

Anyways, good call on aftermarket one-way valves. I've never trusted the stock PCV valves and always backed things up with one way valves.

And Im glad that you're keeping the stock PCV configuration - thats the way to go. I never liked the vented/breather catch cans for the way they worked.

Here's a little info:

Ivory8g
02-11-2013, 08:24 PM
Thats a very informative video so people can visually see what is going on unknowingly.
I agree mine is most likely failing/has failed. Personally I have never seen an na motor pcv valve block out boost. For that matter turbo cars that have bigger turbos and stock pcv systems have the same damn problems. Thats how blow by happens. All the oil pooling in intercoolers and what not. They will all eventually fail lol. These vents were made to handle 70psi day in and day out and have super strong seals on the inside. The stock pcv can fail all it wants I'm good :)

^^I think like the V6 valve covers, the early 8G-A (1999 and some 2000 model years) just said "Mitsubishi 16 Valve" where every year after that had the "2.4L 16 valve" stamped valve cover. It's funny, the 4-cyl guys want the newer one, and the V6 guys want the older one, especially those with 6G74/75 engine swaps (false advertising lol).

Pvc valve. Um. Why u dont get a 02-03 valve cover, get a AN Fitting and get a vent oil catch can.
My setup
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/02/13/e9u3yvyb.jpg

Because this setup is not correct for a street car where the engine spends 80% of the time under vacuum. Your setup only vents under boost and it doesnt evacuate crank case vapors under vacuum.

That isnt going to work very well bro. You want to mimic the stock system as much as possible. a vented catch can does just that. vents those gasses to atmosphere under boost so your crankcase doesnt get pressurized but instead is wide open. I dont want any smoke coming out of a catch can underhood. The stock system and one way vents are superior as the valves work together an pulls vacuum (very important for nice and tight piston rings) and shuts off the crankcase under boost. Mitsubishi engineers spent a lot of time engineering what will last the longest and what is most efficient. No need to re-invent the wheel in my eyes :)

isaurio i think he did, hes waiting for the paint to dry

edit; also what yr valve covers say mitsubishi on them? i came across this when i was working on my buddys 3g and grabbed another VC and the YARD and didnt notice it till i installed it?

I've been trying to figure out this vented catch can business for a couple days now. I ended up keeping the stock PCV Then routing the house to the catch can then to the valve cover breather and I capped off the nipple on the manifold. I deleted the intake nipple.

I used to run a sealed can from the PCV to the can to the manifold and never had an issue. I'm curious if the new setup will work. If it doesn't, Marc expect a phone call because I am going to need one of those one way valves haha.

Soooooo you guys should know by now when I get quiet I'm up to no good lol.

I pulled up to Mondo's house to put on the valve cover and intercooler piping, he talked me into spraying the bay so we pulled the motor out and I start seeing writing on the motor. Wtf straight up junkyard engine. So we pull the motor and spray the bay.

Pulled the timing cover off of the old motor and wtf?
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/The%20Tumbler/horriblegunk.jpg
Gunk that looked like rtv all over the engine in there. OMG. Made the executive decision to pull the damn thing out and swap in a spare block that Mondo had from his eclipse.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/The%20Tumbler/oldblock.jpg
cracked the motor open and holy crap did it smell bad *barf*
I started noticing problems starting up and tuned most of it out. now its clear why. crank sensor was covered as well as everything in the timing cover. Honestly I think someone killed a block in the car and put a junkyard motor in the car and and threw on a new water pump and timing belt in it. Flexplate was marked on up to the head on up to the engine block itself. Poor car. I was the best thing that happened to it. Thermostat was a jacked as well. seal was waaaaaay too big. We called it a night and hit it the next morning

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a84/hakkeshou/The%20Tumbler/goingin.jpg
Mondo freshened up the block out of his car.
We cleaned up everything in the engine. Painted the head the same grey that I used on the valve cover. Painted the block black. Re-routed the throttle cable. Put on the slim fan for the radiator. Sprayed the bay completely with bedliner. Deleted power steering and a/c as well. Put the head on, torqued the headstuds and retimed the motor. Put it all back together and put it in the car. 20 hours of no sleep and a finished car ......

So on the performance front my next goal is further increasing my efficiency. my next project is a diy 100% water or 50/50 water/alcohol injection setup. I weighed e-85 and water air intercooling and several other options and this is the route I'm going to do. free power/knock reduction/steam cleaned engine? yeah I'm down. I probably wont even need to touch my tune and and still gain power. its going to cost a fraction of what the name brand kits cost and have the same reliability.

Thanks man! Me too. It oddly adds aggressiveness to it!

I removed the ugly coolant resevoir and replaced it with a catch can haha! It really opens up the bay. Didnt get to play around with it too much. Eventually I'm going to replace it with something nicer.

Once it gets warmer and I have some free time I'm pulling the wastegate and coolant overflow and painting em to match and tucking lines.

So I turned the boost to 16 psi on this motor and whoa. front end gets squirrely like its about to lift if the road isnt perfectly straight.

Decided I was sick of hitting 86% injector duty cycle.
So I modded my injectors....

Bottom left is stock with the restrictor cap. Bottom right is after I dremeled the welds holding the cap to the injector body and pulled it off.
This is why both times I've gone with the suby 440's because they are pnp and can be modded to 860's in a matter of minutes.

some of the seals we JACKED! replaced all of those. Still have yet to log a pull of course since I just did a quick rescale and change on the latencies. LOL its funny to see my injector scaling go from 401 to 835 in 30-40 minutes

So will the fuel spray out ok, like does it still atomize the fuel without that restrictor on it? I'm no one's expert on injectors, just curious.

Yeah man no joke. I'm good on injectors for $60

Yeah man the spray pattern is a pretty nice cone pattern. Its literally just a metal sheet with holes over the actual injector.

So I thought this mod upped the flow to about 740-750 for some reason but my scalar is definitely 835. I had to pull fuel out like mad. Looked it up and they apparently do flow 860cc and most subarus are using scaling 783-835.

Yeah I know huh?
A LOT of people dont know about this. It somehow got buried on nasioc and people forgot about it or something. I was in Ivory at the time and planning boost when this discovery was found. Luckily. LOL

You know, I heard about this awhile ago my self, and when i got my 440s I was going to get them flow tested and cleaned, and talk about my flow options,

Damn if I would've known I would've stuck with the 440's and not messes with resistor boxes and shit.
