View Full Version : Wingzero's Quest for Form and Function

So I've been contemplating on whether or not should I make a build thread of my car and finally convinced myself, its time. My goal with my car is to make it a daily driven, take it to the track when I want to, but still has form for when I go to car shows and events. Basicaly Form=Function.

Current list of Mods:
Drilled/Sloted front disks
Weapon-R Dragon intake
NGK spark plugs
NGK wires
Penzoil 5W-30 (10w-30 in the winter)
Megan Racing headers
Megan Racing Exhaust
K Sport Kontrol Pro coil overs
Motegi Racing MR-122 18" x 8
5speed transmisson swap
Exedy stage 1 clutch
OEM Flywheel
Megan Racing Short shifter
'02-'03 tail lights

Ok, to be honest, I was conned into buying my 2001 6G72. I was looking at buying a DC5 type-s when my mother somehow convinced me that four doors and a bigger back seat was better -__- not to mention when I was getting a quote for insurance, the DC5 was damn near $350 a month because I was purchasinhg my first car and I was 19 at the time.

Heres The Decepticon after I inexperiancly threw on some rims from an Audi A4 and an Audi A6 because I knew nothing about bolt patterns at the time lol. but it still looked good though.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/47731156941564946160208_zps649b835f.jpg

Days later after getting some expert advice from a friend I quickly threw my steelies back on until I could affored a real set of rims. So for about 3 years it looked like this
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/36966443721646494362812_zps5c8f3b3f.jpg

Then before I got my Motegi's, I re-paited my calipers green. Because lets be honest, everybody does red. I'm different (in my 2 Chainz voice) lol

In December 2010, I bought my Megan racing headers. I let then sit in my closet until I was able to get an exhaust kit as well because I wanted to do a full exhaust and didn't want to go under the car more than I had to.

2012 is when Things got real.

For my 23rd birthday my mom said "This is gonna be your last big birthday present and then from here on out your getting clothes. Your getting too old to be getting expensive stuff!" lol so I asked her to give me $200 for the rims I wanted. Instead, she went ahead and bought me the rims with a set of Nexen tires. BEST. MOTHER. EVER!!!!

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/IMAG0372_zpsc022e73a.jpg

Right before my mother bought me my dream wheels, I was looking into getting a set of coilovers for the Decepticon. I ran across a post on ebay of a guy parting out his '01 Galant that blew a head gasket. And would'nt you know, he had a set of Ksports on his G and he was selling then for $400!!!! I could'nt let that opportunity pass so I hit him Up and set up a payment and shipping arrangement. I'm a broke college student on the come up so I make deals when I can.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/40301510150688771761495_zps7632459e.jpg

About two weeks pass after I get the rims and my coilovers finally arive at the door step and it was like christmas all over again LOL. I waited until I had a day off from work to install them and tweek the hight to where I felt it should be.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/426291_10150699166596495_619321494_11238946_788772 169_n_zpsddaa64e9.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/IMG_20120502_170741_zps6152087f.jpg

My mom's birthday was about a week after I instlled my coilovers. ME, her and my littler brother are out getting lunch and we passed a Mini dealership and there was her dream car. A Mercedes SL500. we stop to check it out and it was actually a SL600. I convinced her to try to get it but she didn't think she could but I said just try. Here's the Decepticon stalking all the little Minis lol
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/8807e82c7f5d11e1a39b1231381b7ba1_7_zps364f9671.jpg

Some months pass and a new track opens up about an hour away from my house called AMP, Atlanta Motorsports Park. A friend tells me that if we go help set up the tire walls they give us free track days. We rushed up there and earnd our 2 track days.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/IMAG0085_zpsc876c96e.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/IMAG0073_zps6bb3c537.jpg

After dreaming about doing the 5speed swap in my car since 2009, I was finally able to make the Decepticon come alive. But before I did the swap, I decided it was time to start getting rid of the fake wood looking plastic trims and put some color into the car. So here's where I've left off.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/1343660654871_zps41982c13.jpg
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/1349474402889_zpsfdb8df8d.jpg

Then I was ready for the swap. Now before I get bombed, I know some of those parts actually don't go to a V6, trust me I found out the hard way -__- thank God for summit and their return policies lol
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/IMG_20120803_171609_zpsecec55cf.jpg

I dont actually have the tools to do the swap so I gave it to the shop I was going to at the time and they were nice enough to do it for me. The guy really didnt know what he was doing even though I gave him all the links to TGC. But three months later I finally got my baby back. I couldn't be more happy about the swap. Best mod I've done to my car ever.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/IMG_20121004_161757_zps0ae6fd19.jpg

After doing the swap, Forged Performance was having their annual open house and dyno day. Instead of $200 for three pulls on the dyno, it was $50. I jumped on that shit when I heard it just to see what the car was pushing. after the pulls here are the results
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/IMG_20121013_130727_zps71e521ab.jpg

Waiting in line for his turn.

I really don't do decals on my car but heres the few I had to have on my car.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/PhotoGrid_1346864878455_zps76fd61be.jpg

Remember whenI went to go check out that SL600 with my mom? Well every first sunday here in Georgia, theres a meet called Caffeine and Octane. Its where all the big ballers and old hotrod guys show their beast off to us commoners lol. Heres the Decepticon next to my mom's '05 V12 twin turbo AMG SL600 and an Aventador. somebody tell my mom to get off my car lol
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/IMG_20121202_104456_zpsdad642d6.jpg

This decemper I finally got my exhuast kit. After having a set of headers in my closet, it was time to install them bad boys. Me and my dad spent a weekend doing it, ran into some problems but Black8GV6 was nice enough to help me out with my questions.

Nice job so far getting a little more excitement out of the 6g72. A diamante manifold swap would be an easy and notable upgrade at this point.

Thanks. I was actually gonna do that next once I figure out how to get the cells to stop popping up from doing the 5speed swap.

The coolant reservior doesn't hold pressure so you wouldn't have noticed temp changes.

To me it looks like someone need some room to work near the motor mount and let it rest near the exhaust manifold while it was hot.

Wingzero
01-08-2013, 03:13 PM
Actually my radiator blew and the cap wasnt on good enough and somehow all the hot coolant and heat blowing through the hose melted that huge hole and most of the original hoses. shit got real lol.

So I found this lip for what looks like a 7G VR4 and was thinking about geting it for my 8G. I think it would look pretty good. Also about to order some more goodies for the Decepticon too.

Great progress with the car, and nice snag on the suspension. Love my KSports!

If you want to make the most of the exhaust and stuff, get yourself a Tactrix 2.0 cable and get that thing tuned. That alone makes a big difference for the performance even for a stock motor with just an intake, add the full exhaust and a manifold swap (the stock ones on this platform suck), and you can get better responce out of everything.

Wingzero
01-24-2013, 07:44 PM
Thanks man. I want to lower it more but I'm not investing in anymore oil pans lol. I was waiting for it to not be cold anymore to go get another intake manifold and throttle body.

Got another goodie in the mail today. My Megan Racing short shifter came. It only took me about 10min to install. Now I'm just waiting for my Evo 8wing to finally come in and I think I'll be looking into paint.

Before you install the evo 8 wing test fit it and take pics. IMO the wing will look out of place if you do not have a body kit. The taller the wing the lower the car needs to be to the ground (with a body kit).

Thanks for the advice. I will definitly test fit it before i go along with paint and I don't think my car can get any lower lol I'm already 2 1/2-3inches off the gronud in the front alreadylol. I bought a black wing because I thought it would look better with the color of my car now and later when I paint it white. The carbon fiber on the wing needs to be resurfaced anyways so I'll have some time to get the fitment for the wing just right.

I'm currently in the process of wet sanding the fading down. I started off with a 2000grit paper because I've never sanded anything down before but it it didn't mank too much of a differance so I'm gonna get either a 1000grit paper or one step lower.

This is a serious advice, don't install the spoiler yet wait until you have the body kit on or if you don't want a body kit just forget about the evo spoiler. it looks better that way without the spoiler. IMO

You have a nice build going on keep it nice and clean.

I got my front lip spliters from ebay yesterday. Test fitted them and it doesn't look bad. I just need to either get another front bumper seeing how mine is all warped and bent from being so low. I'm thinking about wrapping them with the carbonfiber vinyl wrap.

Finally got a warm day here in Georgia and no rain for awhile so I took advantage of the weather and painted my bumper and installed the front splitters. I think it came out preatty good and it looks a bit more aggressive too.

driving in the rain was no joke on these things. They only lasted about 7months. I do some hard driving here and there on some down hills and uphills not to mention all the terrible roads we have down here in atlanta. my alignment is all messed up too.

4g63lover
02-28-2013, 10:50 PM
Get the alignment done! That dangerous as F*** driving around with an alignment that bad. And don't blame it on the height, our cars have rear toe adjustability and front camber and toe adjustability. No matter how low you are the toe always goes back to spec.

If the rear eccentrics are frozen I'd suggest rotating the tires every oil change.

Wingzero
03-01-2013, 01:32 PM
Lets get somethings striaght, I'm cool with all the litte pokes here and there about things like my tires bc I too have a sence of humor about things. I also know the seriousness of the situation as well. I know having tires like that aren't the best. But as I've stated before, I'm a college student with not too much money to play with. The last few mods I've done was all thanks to uncle sam. I've already set money to the side and even dipped into my savings to get things like new tires. What 99% of yall don't know is that for damn near 8months between the years 2011-2012 my car was in the shop for lots of major engine, chassis, two blown auto trannys, 13 broken/rusted studs replaces, a broken front axel and way too many things to mention that NEEDED to be done to the car. Ask anyone that knows me, I really didnt even own my car from December 2011 to october 2012. Most of my friends and my mother even said I should buy another car but I actually grew so close to my car I couldnt bring myself to even get another Galant.

I do respect and take note of all the veteran G owners and I've been on TGC for a good while now so I've watched, learned and took heed of many problems, issuses and other things that may have or could have been a future problem. As for the modifications I've done, I again, respect and take note of everyone's opinions on what I should or shouldn't do. I've been on TGC for awhile now and you can ask anyone that knows me that I do not go with the pack. I may do some things that most don't understand but trust me I do everything with a perpuse. Take the Evo wing for instance; I have a close friend that feels like most of you when it comes to spoilers of any sort of nature. his take on it is "if it didn't come with the car, it doesn't belong on the car." And to some degree I also agree with that. But heres where I stand; I do plan to take the car to the track after I feel like the engine, suspention ect is up to spec to take it to the track but I do a lot of mountain Uphill/downhill driveing with my car. In my experiance with the car I like that my car has good balance upon corner exits but upon entry I feel like I need more weight in the rear of the car seeing how its nose heavy. So how I'VE compensated with this is I have kept my spare tire in the trunk, I have two speaker boxes in the rear but only one 10'' type R in one and Ive made another my tool box so I'm never without my tools. but When I go to the track I'v been told that even though everything is secrued properly that I would have to take everything out before I enter the track. I had no problem with that and my set up in the rear allows for easy removal when need be. So I've taken my liking to the Evo wing on the G and wanted to install it for the extra weight with or without anything in the trunk. Even my friend agreed that its understandable to want more weight in a front heavy car. But again I don't have a problem with anyone suggesting what should or should'nt be done but If you don't like it then cool keep off the build thread. I happen to be one of the few that actually likes the oem '00-'01 US front end. And with eveyone going "JDM" I choose to go a complete different route to the build of MY car.

ON another note, Got two new tires today =D I'll be replacing the other two hopefully before formula D Road Atlanta

I contemplated getting those Kumho's (can't remember the exact name, I wanna say Ecsta AST or something like that) but I went with the Ecsta LX Platinums for longer life and quieter tread, I'm in a pure street car though. Build it how you want, just be safe with it, that's the only criticism I'll ever throw anyone's way (for the most part).

Well it's been a busy week or so but I found some time to get out to fan fun and get some things done. Oh and I got tint too lol 35% in the front 20% in the rears. All it needs now is a new TGC decal to cap it all off. (someone make this happen!!!! lol)

you really think adding a 25 pound spoiler on a 3k+ pound car is going to affect your handling at all???????????

plus maybe like 20 pounds of downforce lol.

and im not trying to be mean at all just giving you some perspective.. and i kinda agree with what others have said.

bruh I know for a fact that a wing makes no differance on a front wheel drive platform and downforce has nothing to do with the wieght adding issue at all. I more looking for how the wieght shifts in and out of turns. but its what evs tho

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me you got the alignment done. Unless you did the tint yourself, the $100 MAX alignment should've taken priority over the tint.

I've been where you're at dude, I'm not going to sit here and tell you how you should mod YOUR car. But for GODSAKES, get an alignment. If it's wearing the tires out that quickly, you are driving a DEATH TRAP.

^^This is all considering you havent got it done yet. if you have, then good for you.

I'm Getting the alignment done this week. The tint was done bc I bought a coupon off groupon months ago and almost forgot about it. But I get a bounus check this week so I might also get new tires for the front too.

I'm also getting black headlights too but the alignment is first priority. I'm having it done at the Kaufman next to my job wile I'm at work so I don't have to wait.

Well, went to get an alignment today and found out both left and right tie rods are loose. So it looks like the alignment is gonna have to wait another two weeks or so until I can order both the inner and outer tie rods. Does anybody know of a good high quality brand I should order or am I just better off going to autozone and just getting both inner and outer tie rods?

Cant believe you have been driving with loose tie rods, and you mention "cornering and the rear needs to be weighed down".

When it comes to modding maintenance is always first.

Just to let this be known, You cant tighten the tie-rods on an 8G. Once they are loose, they are junk. If you havent gotten them replaced yet, Moog tie-rods have never failed me. I have my tie-rods doing the "Y" from YMCA on my 8G because of the height and they are still as tight and solid as when i first bought them. Of course I make sure I shoot some grease in them with a grease gun everytime I have her in the air.

On a more lghter note, your ride looks pretty good. I was wondering how those splitters look outside of their eBay ads. Contemplating them for my Lancer. I am glad you stayed away from the EVO wing, it looks like you are going with a much cleaner look from the last pictures.

Thumbs up on the lifetime alignment service and on the wheel. Although I would have gotten a black wheel to keep the coloe scheme you have going on.

"REAR TOE IS MAXED OUT.. WILL NOT GO INTO THE GREEN WITH ALTERED SUSPENSION" That looks suspicious too me. I'm fairly low and I can still dial in my rear toe to where I want it. Not only will this continue to wear tires rear toe can be dangerous depending how its set, if you have toe out that thing has the potential to jump all over the place on you.

Shouldn't have gone with the PZ900's. I work at firestone and customers usually come back for other ones or simply complain. And that toe issue sounds fishy as well. Try going to a different location.

I'm fine with the tire so far its not too shabby compared to my khumos. But I'll give you a better update on them after MOD. I will take it to another Firestone though to get the alignment redone but so far no troubles with the current set up.

Hey guys just popping in to annoy you a bit and check in with y'all. I've been busy with life as usual but I am back up and running. Here's my new car that I bought for my birthday.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f30/wingzero33/IMG_20140124_231917_zpsq1uvcpta.jpg (http://s44.photobucket.com/user/wingzero33/media/IMG_20140124_231917_zpsq1uvcpta.jpg.html)

Its an 06 and still in the original motor. It has 116xxx miles and only had one owner. I do know about the heavy maintenance the rotary requirea but I believe I can handle it. I do plan to buy another Galant again as I do miss my old G but the next one will be even more bad ass performance wise than my last. But for now I'm living the rotary life.

So you can't afford to maintain or modify a cheap/reasonably gas efficient Mitsu, and you replace it with a rather high mileage RX8? Have fun with 13-19 mpg, checking oil at each fill-up, risking engine death from carbon buildup (which is likely on a car with higher/likely highway miles) and that just costs more to own in general.

Homeboy, you done messed up.

While rotary is not my cup of tea, 116k for an 8 yr old car is no very high. Don't know about the carbon build ups on those cars or their mpg's. Just don't run cheap gas for sure.

Congrats on the car.

1) Avoid flooding the engine with fuel..you will have a VERY hard time getting it started, 2)change oil & check oil regularly and use the good stuff not the cheap $hit, and 3) do not perform an intake induction cleaning service other than cleaning the TB(see number one)

15k/year, higher than the national average.

All rotaries are gas hogs, just a natural consequence.

^Not a cheap/easy car to own, nor is it one for lazy people/those who do not do preventative maintenance.

IE: Probably not good for someone who let their tires get down to this:

Sorry to ruin your little rant blue but actually that was my only real mistake when owning my Galant. Granted, it could have been worse but none the less my only real mistake. Other than that, I changed the galants oil every other month and checked the levels constantly until it was time to change. I flushed all my fluids many a time, trans, coolant system and even replaced the freon just for the hell of it. I've also been looking at getting one of these for quit a while now and have been on the RX-8 club reading all the new owner sections back and forth, hell I've been to the Mazda dealership just to pick the brains of the master techs on good rules of thumbs on how to maintain and take care of a rotary engine. So I think I'm pretty well equipped with information and help around where I live if I run into any problems or need help with anything. But thanks for the 2ยข though:thumb_rsvd::thumb_rsvd:

^^The second link in Cody's post had a very long, informative must-read for any new or prospective RX-8 owner, and within that link was this one paragraph in red that absolutely tells the tale for me and would keep my lazy ass out of a Renesis-powered vehicle:

If possible engine failure makes you that uncomfortable and/or paranoid, then this is not the car for you. You have to accept the issues or ownership will turn into a nightmare. It still could anyway, but your mindset going in is far more important than statistics. The more prepared you are, financially and mentally, the less of a problem any of this will actually be for you.

Now I'm not saying you shouldn't have bought what you wanted, but I hope you're prepared. They paint a bleak picture for pre-2009 8's and you are gonna have to stay on top of that thing! Congrats and good luck, because they supposedly drive like a dream!

The Renesis is a decent engine, could been a better engineered though. The RX8 drives almost like a Miata since they are build on share platform.
Using quality fuel can reduce carbon build up in a rotary but the oil lubricated apex seals don't help. I wish the Renesis had a higher compression, peripheral intake ports, and GDI
