Saturday I plan on buying a 5 speed Trans from a 98 eclipse 2.0 I don't know what trim it is but it has a sun roof and a spoiler if that helps.... My worry is that the eclipse has the 420a and ive read a few times that the Trans from the 420a wont fit the spyder cuz of the spyders orientation but the 420 and galants orientation is the same motor on the passenger side Trans on the driver side

Does anyone know
1. What is the model # of the the 5 speed Trans and
2. Will the Trans bolt to my motor (4g64)

DON'T buy anything, DO MORE RESEARCH.

You need a 5 spd trans from a 00-05 2.4 4g64 ECLIPSE. The 420a is a completely different engine, that trans doesn't even fit the 4g63 eclipses let alone the 4g64's, even if that 98 eclipse had 4g63 it wouldn't fit your 2.4 8g.

EDIT: I found some threads that helped me, read them over several times, I didn't know anything about cars when I did my 5 speed swap (and still don't know much), I asked questions on TGC and READ ALOT. I would have a spare car to use, my swap took awhile because I didn't know what I was doing, plus my fuel pump died at the same time and had to pin point down that issue.

Theres more threads over on the 3G Eclipse site that will help. Read alot and have all the parts before you start.

Guess I have to put off this project. Guy confirmed its the 420a motor. Anybody know where to get a 7bolt 4g63 or 64 5-speed Trans between Jersey and northern Virginia for like 300

try http://www.car-part.com/

Nothing will be in your price range. You're price range you'll have to pull it off yourself from a junkyard. Plus if you pull it yourself you can get EVERYTHING you need.

You don't use the 2G trans, however you can use the flywheel/clutch, starter plate and starter (space out 1/8") everything else is pretty much from 3G's. I pulled a swap myself from a yard that was about an hour from me, got there with a friend to help around 9am and by 11:30am I had paid and was loading up.

Last I checd the 63 and 64 blox are the same only diff is the cranks, one has a longer stroke. Why wouldn't I be able to use a 63 5 speed on the 64?

Because the 64 in the 8th gen galant was rotated 180 degrees as opposed the the 63 from a 2g eclipse it would be backwards.

Oh misunderstanding. I wasn't talking about the 2g eclipses

The trans from a 4g63 evo 8/9 is the one that bolts up to the 64 but other things need to be modified to convert it to FWD or make a 8g AWD.

^ok. They only 5 speed 63 transmission that I know off hand that will bolt to a 4g64 is an evo 8 or 9 one. Now, with that being said, it does take work to make it fit and function like a fwd transmission. You would have to use a block off plate on the tcase mount side of the transmission, and you would have to open up the tranny, and weld the diff together I believe.

The ONLY transmission that is plug and play so to speak is the 5 speed from any 3rd gen I4 eclipse. then you can use a 3g clutch setup, since the eclipse and galant pretty much have the same drivetrain and suspension setup.

a 63 transmission from the 2g eclipse will not work because the engine is rotated 180 degrees. Our transmission is on the drivers side, 2g's and 7gen galants transmissions are on the passenger side

Exhaust_Power was able to use the Hyundai Sonata/Kia Optima 5 speed. He even did a write up for it.
