So I am finally back in the game! After a few years of being without a Galant I have returned! I have a ton of things that i want to do to this one. Although i wish i still had my Dolphin and rear VR4 bumpers. But oh well, time to start fresh.

And here is the suspension thats going to replace the trashed one thats in the car now...

Awesome, I would sand that rust off the hats on the coilovers and put a few coats of paint on before installing them.

So, just curious, but from the pic does anyone know anything about that suspension?

Looks like KYB GR-2s with sleeves, but not sure what kind of sleeves hopefully not eBay

2002BlackDragon

How about the springs? Think they are stock?

Springs are definitely not stock, look at the front ones. The stock front springs are wider.

Please dont run thar suspension setup, looks very unstable and dangerous.

I dont know if you're looking to lower the car but the most cost effective thing to do for now is use the KYB struts on the stock springs. Then bury those sleeve overs 6ft under ground.

So your saying that I should use the kyb but not the springs or sleeves? Are these not coilovers? I'm little/lot confused on what I got here.

Blue8g
02-17-2014, 12:17 PM
I wouldn't use that suspension setup, but I would just never advocate cheaping out on suspension at all. I've learned my lesson from cheap off-brand coilovers and just lowering springs on OEM/OEM-replacement dampers.

2002BlackDragon
02-17-2014, 12:22 PM
Well, the car has blown struts and shocks now. So this will at least take care of my inspection. Are the kyb not any good either?

M-Rod

After being abused by those cheap coils, I would be surprised if those struts are not blown.

2002BlackDragon
02-17-2014, 12:55 PM
Not what I wanted to hear. Anyway of checking without mounting to the car?

Sent from my Z796C using Tapatalk

oakrdrs187
02-17-2014, 03:27 PM
A quick way of check is remove the sleeves and springs and push the rod down, the release it and it should come out at a similar pace then how it went in.

Blown shocks will allow the rod to go in rifht away without back pressure and then it will virtually not want to come back out since there is no pressure in the shock.

BlackDragon, don't take all the negative comments about those specific sleeves to mean that all sleeves are bad.

The ones on your dampers are just junk. If I were you I'd stay on your blown stock stuff (as anything you buy used will likely also be blown or near it) and just save up for something that will actually last. Why work/spend twice?

When my rear gr2s blew, the struts had oil on em, that had a distinct smell..almost like baby oil but a lil more solvent like. I'm now on gr2s in the front and agx in the rear. The fronts managed to survive, so I never switched to agx. I'm on springs btw. Besides the rears blowing I don't really have anything bad to say about kyb..I mean I could only expect so much from an oem replacement. Now if I had the agxs to begin with, and they blew as fast, I woulda been upset. Because when I had agxs all arojnd on my 240sx, they lasted over 3yrs until I totaled it. Also ran springs on that car. Rockauto has good prices if you need kybs..also google rock auto discount code. Usually 10% off ones floating around

I have only put 76 miles on the car since I bought it about a month ago. I never made any sounds. After putting on exhaust and fixing inner and outer tie rods I took it for a spin to make sure the alignment was close. Seemed fine then but that's when I noticed the oil light came on while sitting at idle. Then I went to go have it reinspected so I could get tags and about 2 miles out from the inspection station it started to make a horrible noise. Had it towed to the station.

He called earlier and gave me the run down. He said that there was a rod in the lower end that sounded like it was about to come apart, tons of metal in the oil, and that while watching it on the computer the temp would spike after about 2 min of running which he thought may be due to cylinder head being lifted.

I just don't have the funds available to buy and swap a motor.

When you buy a car you change the oil first thing after you get it home, no question, ever. Your experience is a prime example as to why.

Also goes to show, if your oil light is on PAY THE FUCK ATTENTION AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

2002BlackDragon
03-19-2014, 12:49 PM
Wait a sec... I have 5 yes in a shop. I'm not fully retarded. The problems that exist would not have been solved by changing the oil. The problem is I was suckered on craigslist for buying a car with a shit engine in it. The oil in the car wasn't black, just a little darker. The cylinder head was a temp issue. More than likely why the temp gauge didn't work. Chalking it up as a total lose right now. Just trying to figure out if I'm junking it or dropping in new motor. Found one out of a dodge stratus for $500 with 94xxx on it. Just have to figure out if I can come up with the money.

2002BlackDragon
03-19-2014, 12:51 PM

if I had to do it again, I will install my motor from the bottom, so much easier! But if I had to remove a junk motor, I would just jack the car up, and unbolt everything, and just let that sucker drop LOL. (That is if the block has a whole in it) just remember though, just because the motor is "junk", doesn't mean that you can't use anything off of it in the future aka block crank(if its not marred) ect dude.

Was going to say, you'd need to weld up some things in the engine bay, Dion (deeznutz) did it a while back but he had to change a mount point in the bay and had to be precise with his welds. More trouble than it's worth IMO, especially since an Evo head swap can be done on a 4G64 if performance is what you're after.

Manual swap is a must for these cars, they really come alive with that third pedal and a stick.

Well guys, here is an update... car is gone. Ran into some major issue with my paycheck. Really haven't gotten paid in over a month. Found out 6 days after the fact that county decided to tow my car from the garage lot because it wasn't tagged. I call them to find out that the bill is just under $500 for tow and storage and increasing daily. Since I have no paycheck right now until the fix the issue I can't do anything. And when they do fix my check I have to catch up on all my bills. So the car is a loss. What really sucks is all of my tools are in the trunk with my jack and stands and everything. And I just put the new exhaust and about $200 worth of parts into it.

I feel like my balls were ripped out through my ass hole. It sucks soo much. If my girl friend didn't blow all the money I had set aside for it it would have been towed long ago and avoided all of this. Sucks soooooo bad. And I'm stressing hard core.

Sorry to hear man, keep your head up and keep moving forward as hard as it may be. Any way you could ask for your tools back? Its not like they had store them seperate if they were in the car, it was just the car itself. You know what I mean? Hope it works out

Has a few issues. Needs inner tie rod on passenger side and wiper blades to pass inspection. Needs a tune up. Transmission shifts a little hard, especially when shifting into reverse. And it seems like the key doesn't work in the door. Lol

OK guys, got some questions and looking for opinions. So I have been working on the main stance items for the car and some of its issues and was wondering what you guys thought. Here is my list:

EGR valve- throwing a couple codes (not sure which ones since the guy at Autozone was a douche) and was told that the EGR needed to be cleaned. What would I use to clean it or is that not an option. And I also thought about deleting it all together. Do I just need to remove it and use a block off plate or is there more to it?

Hard shift in the trans- so it shifts kinda rough and its even worse when shifting into reverse. Could this be a simple issue? Or should I start sourcing 5speed parts?

intake manifold- so since I have to remove everything to do the spark plugs I was thinking I might go ahead and do the upgraded 74 intake and tb. What's your thoughts on this?

Other than a few other minor details, the car seems to be doing great.

Oh wait, one more thing... I smell gas. Not from outside the vehicle, but while driving. I'm not sure where its coming from either.

Solved the fuel smell issue. The black ring on the fuel pump was barely on. Got almost 2 full turns. And both hoses weren't on fully.

Good luck, there are many components of the EGR system, I would go to a different store, have them pull the codes and right down the codes, that might make it easier in your search

Hard shift in the trans- so it shifts kinda rough and its even worse when shifting into reverse. Could this be a simple issue? Or should I start sourcing 5speed parts?
First check the trans mount, front mount and rear mount since all three are on the trans, but I would start finding the 5 speed parts, thats how mine went

intake manifold- so since I have to remove everything to do the spark plugs I was thinking I might go ahead and do the upgraded 74 intake and tb. What's your thoughts on this?
I have the 6g74 IM and TB, I would say skip it, just keep the 6g72 IM and TB, save your money. If you want power you can actually feel then do the 5 speed swap.

2002BlackDragon
08-15-2014, 10:01 PM
Yeah, my buddy is a manager at another Autozone so I'm gonna have him run the code. I just wasn't in that town when I had it ran.

I'm deff looking into the 5speed swap. Thinking I'll just go that route instead of putting money into the auto box.

And I'm not really looking at putting power out right now, but is the 74 im and tb not really worth the upgrade? I always thought they were suppose to be good ones for this motor.

There are some gains to be had with that intake and throttle body. Stock automatic V6's typically dyno'd around 150whp/160wtq. A friend's automatic V6 with the 74 manifold and throttle body made 161whp and I can't remember the torque number, but I believe it was around 170'ish.

The manual swap will net you more power, around 180whp/185wtq. It just depends how simple or complicated of a task you're up for, and how much you're looking to spend when weighing between the two upgrades.

So I have seen the several threads about what's better and the color of things, but all I care about is performance. What is the best spark plugs and wires out there for the 72? Looking at buying really soon and want to get the best I can. NGK wires? Double platinum plugs?

Sent from my Z796C using Tapatalk

Neo8G
08-20-2014, 07:10 PM
I used a set of NGK Iridiums on my Galant and 05 Maxima. A little pricier but worth it imo. Even the 3.8 I'm working on will get a set.

6G72gearhead
08-20-2014, 08:55 PM
A double pointed platinum is a waste on our engines. Since our engines use a distributor system they fire from the electrode to the ground electrode (the tip), so a single point of platinum on the electrode allows it to not erode as fast. With a waste spark system, like on a GM3800 V6, the coil fires 2 cylinders at the same time and it fires the cylinders directly, there is no distributor in play. Since it fires 2 cylinders at the same time, one is being fired from the electrode to the tip, and the other is firing from the tip to the electrode. Since the most erosion occurs on the firing end of the plug a point of platinum on the electrode and the tip are used, giving you the double platinum.

There is a little more to it then that, but that gets you the gist of it.

I'd recommend an NGK Iridium if you aren't interested in changing plugs often. If you service the car frequently I'd use the regular old copper plugs from NGK.

2002BlackDragon
08-21-2014, 03:48 AM
Awesome advice! Then I'll be getting the NGK Iridium plugs. How about wires? I have seen some that come in a larger gauge. Does that matter? Or am I good sticking with NGK wires.

Get NGK wires, consider no other option. The quality for the money is above any other option on the market and anything better is overkill. As far as plugs get either NGK iridium IX's or denso single platinums, Copper is for cars that see plug changes with the seasons or more. Also refresh the cap and rotor.

6G72gearhead
08-21-2014, 02:27 PM
^^^ As he said, remember, you won't get hotter spark out of low resistance wires. Most of the time all you'll accomplish is getting some wicked radio interference. The reason for this is the spark gap acts kind of like a resistor, so once you produce the voltage needed to jump the spark gap, a factory wire with 7k ohms per foot resistance is suddenly insignificant. NGK wires will get the spark to the plug without creating a bunch of noise through your stereo.

2002BlackDragon
08-21-2014, 03:08 PM
See... I got the stereo noise now. Never knew what caused that. And this is a dumb question, but what do you mean refresh?

When I refer to a 'refresh' on a car it can vary to an extent. When I refresh my racecar I do plugs, fluids, inspect brakes, belts and anything else that may need attention. For built race engines they may need a refresh between events, which can mean taking the engine down and inspecting the internals and replacing rings and bearings. Its more of a routine maintenance that is more involved then what a normal car would see for the purpose of keeping the performance level up to what is needed for competition. Some components may still be in spec and perfectly suitable for the purpose of a normal car, but under extreme environments they are replaced in order to avoid failures.

and the ones you posted don't have an EGR bunge so you will have a check engine light and have to block off your egr system.....can throw a filter on the pipe instead of blocking it off but pretty sure you still get a cel since its free air instead of recirc exhaust...and you'll run lean
