picked this 2003 up for real cheap.

after going over the engine, and noticing the sound of no compression, i pulled the timing cover to inspect the timing belt, and notice a freeze plug laying on the cam gear, and a freeze plug missing on the head, so after that ordeal i sptarted to work on the spark plugs and wires, the wires were broken and melted inside the plug wells. and a spark plug missing on #4 theres my no compression sound i was hearing), check for spark and fuel and all is good there.

going to have to replace the head, most likely

Look at all that rusty water residue by the coolant overflow tank. That plus the spark plug wires being fried, I'd venture to say she's been cooked. DOHC in the plans perhaps?

Other than that she looks clean :thumbup:

um how should i put this, some one put tint on the out side and it was removed, i have a buddy who will remove all the tint for me and retint it
no dohc swap just yet, that will happen when i put my built motor in.
i still have my old head from my old build,

Yeah that's salvageable....

So what exactly am I looking at? Did the metal in between the valves melt? Is that friction damage, say something was banging inside the chambers? I overheated an engine once, and I had small cracks between the combustions chambers and it was warped, but that was it. I've never seen one fried like that before. So what is that?

My uncle seems to think it was nos. I have a hard time believing that since i see no signs of it on the pistons and intake area. Thr pnly thnk i can think of is it over heated really bad from the freeze plug that popped out of the head. Later tonight ill remove the intake mani and do a wet leak down test. All in all the head gasket was fine. It was the original since 03 same with the timing belt

Nitrous runs cool, motors that blow on nitrous usually do so because of internals (bearings, rods, pistons) failing not overheating. Also theres no nitrous installed in that bay, and realistically no random person squeezes nitrous in this kind of car.

To me this looks like the regular carelessness of an overheating engine. I would trash the longblock assembly and get a motor from a yard then go about doing maintenance to it to get it going. One sure of the extent of the damage that was done. Maybe you can source an 03-05 eclipse engine and manual tranny combo and drop that in.

The real question is what caused it to overheat initially, it probably has other cooling system issues.

I got lucky then. I drove on a cracked radiator for two weeks in my old G, I never noticed my temp going up. Then again, I topped off my radiator and tank every morning and after two weeks I replaced the radiator and all was well. Also, I put that bish on jackstands and ran it with the radiator cap off for an hour to make sure all the air got out. Perhaps that didn't happen with this car and they just said "fuck it."

I ran several events with a cracked top radiator tank and never overheated, it would stay cool at about a gallon low, wouldn't leak either! At least not until I decided to fill it up all the way.

Get feeling better dude, it's warming up so all kind of crap is going around.

Marc, I had a couple embarrasing stop lights where the steam would start to vent, but I never had any temp problems. I never got above 210F according to my scantool IIRC, it was just barely into the 200's.

Well i found the cuase. One of the exhausr valve is stuck open, due to a bent valve. Ill post pics soon.

Ok so here my hypothesis on what really happen. One of the lfters on cly #4 exhaust side got rock hard. Kept the valve open that it added to much fuel into the system and the 02s saw to much richness and leaned out the injectors to maximum. It got so hot, it burned all the valve seats. Ate away material on the head and made it get so hot it started to over heat and popped out a frezzplug in the head. And over heated and lost compression in the head due to burnt valve seats.


Thats my answer.

I will still be going over this carefully and will be checking rad amd tstat.
New water pump (well semi new), T belt ext

this is the reluctor wheel, cam sens cylinder, what ever you want to call it
when using a 99-01 head and installing it on a 02-04 you need to switch this out or you will get a cam and crank code same goes if you use a 02-04 head on a 99-01
in short term use the correct cam sens thats the same yr as your car

i do plan to go back and soder all my connections that i made, i left my power probe at the shop and wanted to fire up the car so this was a quit solution at the time.

the the outlander intake and evo TB i also had to rewire it by switching all three connections, real simple if you know anything about electircal.


here a video of it running, it sounds loud now but after it idleing for 45 min it quit it self down abit, now all i need todo is figure out my throttle cable do a oil change, finish the interior and do fix a few issuse with the a/c, put a few miles on the motor and trans and then the fun begins

good work man. Good thing you knew about the cam reluctor. I bought my G without knowing the head was replaced at some point. Had no idea why I popped that code. Eventually figured it out and it was a simple $30 fix.

Not alot of people now about it. I have a neighbor who is a master tech ask me why he was getting these codes on a 3g awhile back. He told me he did a head job, and i simply showed him. And he was mind blown, he chased it for 2day trying to figure it out. I laughed at him handed him a beer and said "now you know" cone back the next day and handed me 50$

havent done much to the new G in the past week, found out i have a bad wheel hub in the rear, and finalized everything under the hood, still need to finish the interior but that will be soon, more important thing is ill be going on vacation next week and ill be installing the turbo but for now heres some pics of the engine bay all cleaned up

The goal is to be there with it and be turbo, i have everything ready. Just need to prep my old oil pan for oil return. Grind down the compressor housing so it wont hit the starter, and install it.

So i have a water and oil feed kit i got fron ebay. Its for an evo. Oil feed is a -4an line. But all the a.n. fittings i have i can run a -6 but ill be choking it down to a -4 for 10in. Will his be ok or should i run -4 all the way or -6 for my oil feed

So i have a water and oil feed kit i got fron ebay. Its for an evo. Oil feed is a -4an line. But all the a.n. fittings i have i can run a -6 but ill be choking it down to a -4 for 10in. Will his be ok or should i run -4 all the way or -6 for my oil feed

well i got more work done to the G, turbo is fully installed, decided not to use an AFPR, still have a list of things to install, i have a deadline to have the car at my shop this friday to weld up the exhaust, parts are on order as well, and my boy alex talked me into using the evo oil filter housing,

got the last bits for my oil system, my dumbass drilled threw the a/c condenser when i was mounting the IC , good this is i have a brand new one hanging in my garage, also on a good note, when i go to test fit my JDM heads it hits a a/c line going from the condenser to the dryer, so im gona have to tweek that line if i want a/c and use the jdm heads.
all in all still have plenty todo,

install the evo oil filter housing
install fuel pump
and finish the interior
and exhaust work

Im to cheap to buy a evo hood.
After the tune it will be brakes, suspension, and wheels. Then it will be body, im in no rush right now.
Ill wait patiently for the right price. I already have a set of drilled and slotted rotors(new) that i need to get from a former member (150$), pick up rear calipers amd backing plates and dual pot front calipers(75$). Suspension is going to be stagg struts(150$) on a set of ebachs or teins (100$)if i can find a set used or new for cheap
Hopefully ill have all that before August


But i do need to take my main daily off the road due to a bad tranny and possibly bad head gaskets. So if we can start tuning real soon that be great..

Dang my bad I didn't check up on the thread. I want to get $800 for them, they are basically new. Selling the wheels too, those haven't had any miles on them just tires mounted and dismounted. Trying to get $500 for those.

Well i made a trip out to orlando saturday and had a great time meeting up with other galant owner.

On the way there i only had two issues.
Car will over heat if i do more then 80mph with the a/c on

And after long trips doing 80mph i loose oil pressure.
On the way home i took the long amd slow way home and i had good oil psi.

Oil i used thinned out since it go hot after a long drive

All in all. Need to run a thicker oil and not 5/30 and run an oil cooler

Not that it will make a world of difference, but do you think removing the weatherstrip for the hood near the wiper cowl will let some heat out? I mean its free lol. I did it to my car cause its not a show car and the motor got dirty prior to anyway. I just left small sections above ground wires on the firewall, and removed the rest.

I'm sure you'll need better solutions but maybe it will be extra insurance

Turbo car needs a little thicker oil, remember oil goes through the turbo which is hot, 5-3 is already thin as it is and will only get thinner, switch to a 40wt or if in warmer climate 50wt, but first see how it does on the 40wt. You'll see an increase in oil pressure as well. As far as temps go, make sure the fans are working properly, turbo cars run hotter so it may be a good to to upgrade to that evo all aluminum radiator.

I was told by a few members i dont need a oil cooler. If i get my hands on an evo oil cooler with lines ill add it(running evo oil filter housing), as for the radiator i have a evo one doing nothing. It will be getting installed this winter. Right now im working on getting all my brake parts and send them out for powder coating. Buddy of mine will be doing that for free.

An oil cooler is never a bad thing, especially if you live in a warm climate. The benefit of having the evo 8 oil filter housing and a cooler that is designed to work with it is that it has a thermostat in it that allows your oil to warm up to proper operating temp before it circulates in the cooler. Just food for thought

Trust me i plan to get one. I live in fla and i already had issues with oil thinnng out and getting hot.

Keep am eye out for me if you come across one

I don't have one, and the highest I have seen my oil temp get is 230ish, and I probably should get one before Autox season just to be safe you know.

Just picked this up for real cheap, needs work, but its nothing i can handle.

Its a vis carbon fiber hood. It is painted black because the clean went bad on it over the 5yrs that the previous had it. I plan to sand it down and color match it.
