You can try a bunch of low budget attempts to get rid of the light but it points to a bad pre-cat and bad IAC valve.

What can be done? I need to get it fixed soon to be able to pass smog check here in NV.

Replace the parts I just mentioned.

Any idea how much the parts might cost me?

IAC at a junkyard ~ $25 and a brand new one ~ $300, get a junkyard one.
If it's the pre-cat get it from the junkyard, a new one would be pricey.

Or, to get you pass smog, do the spark plug anti-fouler trick. Google it if you can't find it here, it's universal for P0421 issues. However, if you don't replace the precat at some point, it will get worse, start to clog and cause drivability issues.

I don't know a trick for the IAC other than replacing it.

Ok, i'll definitely get an IAC from the junkyard. Might be a dumb question, but how could i tell if its a good one? Just as long as its clean?

Also, looked into other threads on here, found a link to a "fix" for p0421 here: http://www.club3g.com/forum/performance/55284-how-fix-ses-error-code-p0421-about-5-bucks.html
I understand this will only fix the CE light but will it be enough to pass the smog check? Id then replace the pre-cat in the near future.
Edit: forget the second part, didnt see your post lol. But thats what youre talking about right?

usually it takes a few drive cycles to come on. your upstream and downstream o2 sensor graphs will mirror eachother and itll throw the code. how exacly did you clean out your cat though? if you have a secondary cat and you just shoved a screwdriver down there the pieces of the primary cat will probably clog the secondary causing one big clog. just a head up. anyway, idk what kind of tests they do in NV but here in ny they just check for codes and readiness. if you just clear the codes they readiness monitors wont be ready therefore not allowing it to pass, depending on the year you can have 1 or 2 "not ready" to pass without any current dtc's in the system.

i basicly used a screw driver method and it came out in chunks then i used compressed air to get to the nitty gritty stuf it lookd pretty darn clean when i was finished dont think it will be clogging the second cat

Update:
I did get my IAC replaced about 2 weeks ago, havent had any problems since then & the code is gone. :023:

Still have p0421, gonna try the anti-fouler trick later today. Just want to make sure the bank 1 sensor is the one you can see when you open the hood correct? Upstream right? The one by the manifold?

bank 1 doesnt mean anything on 4 cylinder engines. you wanna look at the sensor number. bank 1 sensor 1 is upstream(closest to the engine) and bank 1 sensor 2 is downstream. if you were to have a v6 it would be bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor 1(both upstream but one is in a manifold monitoring 3 cylinders and then another to monitor the other 3)

as far as the anti-fouler method, you need to do that in the downstream sensor. if you ever watched an o2 sensor graph, youll see the upstream sensor look very wavy. almost like a sine and cosine curve. the purpose of the catalytic converter is to "change" the gases into not so harmful gases. if you look at the graph of the downstream on a vehicle with a GOOD cat, the graph almost looks like a straight line. the ECM then compares these two graphs. if the downstream graph looks just like the upstream, then itll throw your p0421 saying that your cat is not efficient enough in doing its job. hence "catalyst efficiency below threshold". again going back to the v6 scenario, if it had 2 cats off of the manifold and your bank 2 cat was bad, it would throw a p0431(i think) which should be cat efficiency below threshold (bank 2).

well, that concludes your lesson for today. i would like you to complete chapter 3, section 2, numbers 5-25 odd please. just kidding, but i better get some kind of award for remembering this crap off the top of my head or else i quit!

Kyle, Missouri is the same way that you just mentioned. I am a licensed State inspector. Or was when I was working in a shop. Lol. Smog is a completely differ setup where it actually reads the exhaust output. Here we just do safety and emissions testing.

As for the anti-fowling trick, it worked well on my car for about 2 yrs.

Wow man, real informative, i appreciate that. I understand now. Its a good thing i havent got to doing the anti-fouler trick then or else I wouldve put it on the wrong one lol. Thanks again.

no problem OP. let us know how the antifouler works. i personally have never tried it and am curious to see if it does work.

did you have a gutted cat too? its possible that your cat was just on the verge of being not efficient and the antifouler just put a bit of a blinder on the downstream o2. i would love to take a look at the graph of the sensors to see what exactly happens after you install one.

I had the DC header long tube so it deleted my cat altogether.

Nice to see you around te StL Black Dragon. I just got one for 600 also with this issue, I have a parts car right now. Should I just swap the cats to clear the code or try the antifouler trick? Autozone guy said run some cleaner thru the gas and it should clear it so Im driving it to IN Friday with another bottle of cleaner and hopefully that clears it.

If you have a spare cat would it be easier to swap it out or do the anti fouler trick?

@atish25- you in the stl area? If you have a spare cat I'd gut it and slap it on the car. And I'd prob do the anti fouler trick on top of it too. Just a thought.

Yep south county Stl. I have a parts car with a cat that I think is good just didn't know how difficult it was I figured id grab all the parts off it I can use, help yourself its going to the yard in a week. I talked to a mechanic and he suggested the anitfouler also so Ill do both. Just trying to clear the SES for inspection to get plated.
