Shift solenoid is probably going out, or that particular synchro is worn out. I'd check your fluid first to see if it's low before I start changing parts.

search up shift flair...there is a TSB out for it, happens a lot on the F4A51 transmission. Mine's been doing it for like 2 years

here:

This is a mechanical issue, not PCM related. It is a 2-3 Shift flare that Mitsu has a TSB out for. TSB-05-23-004REVII.

This is the beginnings of your auto killing itself.

Don't feel bad, all automatics eventually kill themselves, its just a matter of how soon they do it.

You will notice it going from first to second next and then slowly you'll start noticing it just taking off the line

OP if you want to fix that problem then here are a few links with 5 speed swap info in them as a general idea of what it takes:
Goosey's:
https://www.thegalantcenter.org/showthread.php?16557-8G-Auto-to-Manual-Conversion-DONE!-**UPDATED-02-03-06**&highlight=8g

Maddock's:
https://www.thegalantcenter.org/showthread.php?34842-How-To-6G72-5-Speed-Swap&highlight=8g+5+speed+swap

and I'm in the process so if you have any questions LMK, I may not be able to answer them all but I'm figuring it out as I go...I could at least tell you about cost an stuff since everything on here is a few years old

Do a tranny flush and you'll probably be fine. If it's really that gone it'll flare for years before it actually takes a dump pending your wavespring doesn't decide to pop.

Or the trans pump doesn't shatter, but even cracked they'll work for awhile. That is what happened to my last auto.

Really depends on how you drive it.

Mine has been limping around for 2 years but I drive pretty modestly. There is the occasional 100+ pull but you'll be fine for a bit like these guys said...they are extremely well versed in these cars ^.^

I'm inclined to state that the abuse you subject yours to is a bit steeper than most. Lol. They sometimes even last with a popped wavespring so long as the chunks don't make it into the pump. The one auto I pulled that had shift flare issues was pounded into oblivion and the fluid fried out so bad it came out like syrup and smelled like melting latex. There was no red left at all.

I had a chunk of wavespring go through my pump which merely cracked it, you could see where the section of spring go wedged into the pump. It cracked right by it and the fluid leakage caused it to erode a channel through the crack. It was pretty entertaining to pull apart.

Other than the spider gears in the diff I'd have used all the frictions and steels, as well as the other hard parts. So it was taking it well, the wavespring killed the pump and that was all she wrote.

My buddies th400 in his pulling/race truck had a very pretty multicolored torque converter come out, it was painted pink when it went in. The applies where close to steel on steel except for the band which had worn completely through, thus causing the need for the rebuild. That reminded me why I don't work on auto's, the dog wouldn't come in the garage it smelled so bad.

Oh yeah. There are two smells in the automotive I simply cannot tolerate. Burned auto transmission and old power steering fluid.
