The day has come when I finally started to turn the wrench on my "new" Galant, so here comes the build thread or diary, and lots of sleepless nights.

For those who don't know, I owned a Kalapana Black '01 GTZ for 10 years, till someone most likely on the phone while driving put an end to that. (She ran into me from the back with 60ish mph while I was standing in a line.) It was fun car that I enjoyed working on, this is what it looked like in it's last phase:

Needless to say I was pretty depressed. This happened back in January, and for several months I was trying find an other one. I was tempted several times to just move on. Than last Saturday I purchased a '02 GTZ. Here it is in it's stock, faded glory.

First I actually passed on it bc I thought it needs too much work, but thinking it through I came to realize I need to stop being lazy, as I can do what it needs, and have the parts. (I bought the '01 back from insurance.)

The bad: cancer. It is my favorite mitsu color however so good base for a repaint in the end.
The good: completely rust free southern car! Makes a huge difference.

So the idea is to swap over the parts from my old GTZ, finish what I started (6g75 swap), pull off an other JDM conversion and paint it.

I started on it today and made a small progress. First I wanted to to swap the suspension and the brakes. Didn't get as far as I wanted bc of the rain but completed the front.


I've been running Megan coilovers with 8k Tanabe springs up front. It made for a nice ride, but the springs will have to be recoated or replaced in the future. Still have the Megans too, but I'm not sure what directions I'll be going. New boots are also in order. Lower portion of struts have been re-powdercoated.

Nice transformation, would have been nice if you could salvage the bumper and radiator as well. Was your previous 8g 5spd converted or auto? Reason I ask is I thought some auto trannys are cooled by the radiator and to use an aftermarket rad, you need a seperate cooler.
Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I just thought I recalled reading that somewhere, but not pertaining to galants.

Yes, the oem radiator has the cooler built in for the auto trans, so if you remove it you need a separate one. I converted to 5sp however.

One of the things that bothered me about '02 is the interior. It's worn badly, so I decided to swap it completely. Between my day offs I started to pull parts from '01 in the nights.

Front and rear are pretty much done, still need to pull the seats, headliner, doorcards, sw and carpet.

Today I finally got to the rear shocks. First however I rebled the front brakes and installed these lifesavers while at it. The best is you can pick them up at any parts store. ***Update: they leak on both my Brembos and the Baers. Don't get these if you are shopping for bleeders.***

On the suspension what was a pita: the camber bolts. Two of them even stripped on '01 during reassembly and the bushings were so old that they just didn't line back up, till I wedged a BFP into the suspension, sat on it, and in a monkey kind pose started wrenching. Set me back hours but I made some new friends in the neighborhood... Makes me appreciate '02 even more = no rust.

After a while the rain stopped. The brake lines I had to leave on '01, so stock lines for now. The speed bleeders were also a pain on the Brembos. While on the BAERs they worked great, on the evo brakes I'm suspecting they are going to leak, as it feels like it took too much force to close them. Will see.

Swapping out the cluster for the white one. The newer blue one was cool, but I like the '01 better and it's a perfect match with my defi gauges. For me this was a straight forward swap, I just switched out the ODOs, everything else was the same. Yepp, also swapped the stock cd players for the win.

Sorry, for now, I'm keeping both steering wheels. I'm going to use the 3G one till I figure out if the EVO airbag can be wired properly. This won't happen till next spring probably.

I also realized that the cluster swap needs to be revisited, and the circuit boards will need to be switched. My gas light comes on when I open the doors...

Added fun of the day: the WM battery that came with the car died, so I ended up buying an Optima Redtop. I had one in '01 for 7 years, and had the trunk set up for it. But I'm curious to see, those of you who have the battery in the back, where did you route it? I had the cable exit the engine bay by the headlight, and would like to do a shorter run this time around.

Exactly..always like builds with custom work and or less common parts like the defi and greddy gauges.

Question by using oem carpet, it just drops right in right? If so I might look for a cleaner one than mine at the yard one day, if it seems worth the money/time. Gave my car a good vac today and a few spots still slightly annoy me..all previous owners fault lol

The bezel for the switch is a from a Mirage I found at the yard. It was prewired for the mirror and had the bezel with a blank in it. The switch snaps right in, I just turned it sideways. I might mold it and paint it later.

As far as the carpet goes, it's not hard to do at all. I don't know about finding a clean one at the yard, but you can get an aftermarket one for under $150. I don't know about the quality or fitment on those, but I'm sure there are a few on here who went that route.

Not much update otherwise, I spent the day wrapping up the interior and troubleshooting my brakes. Like suspected, the speed bleeders were leaking, so I'm going to replace them with OEM brembo ones. Also, the pistons on the rear Brembos seem to have a hard time returning. I'm going to see if the oem bleeders/getting rid of the air finally will help with that, if not rebuilding the calipers is next. I'll be upgrading the lines and probably build the front Brembos too at the same time.
Also sanded/buffed up the headlights for now so I can end the day on a happy note.

This month went by fast. Things slowed down a little bit as I got into a new position at work, and 4th qrt keeps me busy, but the good thing is once it's over, I'll have more time for the car. I really want to pull the engine and trans from 01 before the year is over, but I'm not sure if I can pull it off.

With that said, I cleaned up my ADDCO swaybar and endlinks. When I got the car back from the insurance, it looked like hell.

Talking about the brakes, I ended up pulling the rear Brembos for a rebuild and put back the stockers for now, so 2 weeks ago I could start driving the car to work. Waiting for the rebuild kits, I started to clean them up. Technafit ss lines also arrived a week ago.

Everything looks great and just keeps getting better. Can you tell a diffrence between the 3g bar and the Carbing? Figured the Carbing might have an advantage by being a solid 1 piece construction and the master cylinder stopper.

A good friend of mine once put some links together similar to those, they're just custom made, lengths with swivel hardware. Where he go the stuff I have mo idea... he even uses the joints when fabbing traction braces/bars.

Sorry for the delayed reply, 4th quarter, the Holidays, and the cold pretty much stopped me doing anything to the G. The endlinks I put together myself. You can source the spherical parts and such from www.midwestcontrol.com, and I like to get my ss bolts from boltdepot.com. It's fairly easy, if you need help, I have my shopping list somewhere.

Looks like the biggest metric standoff thread sizes they have is M5 though. They do have them in aluminum or stainless steel.

That was pretty good packing. I know how you feel about finding a deal on brand new oem parts. Like how I felt when I scored a deal on a new oem lip for my old s14. The first time I scraped it, it definitely hurt on the inside. At least in your deal you don't have to paint.

I had a short timeframe, so the goal today was to strip the engine from all wires, manifolds and fuel setup etc. I'm doing this in a one car garage, so everything begins with moving stuff around.

Good bye PWR rad, bent and cracked a weld. This was for an EVO V, so it places the upper coolant to the driver side. The lower tabs on the radsupport have been rewelded. With some adapters I fabbed up the factory driver side fan was retained but the pass side had no chance. (Heavy metal clunker anyways.) I was going to use a slim pusher, but the temp was fine so I never ended up doing it. Small detail, but the rad also clears the JDM heads perfectly. I think I'll do an EVO V setup next as well.

Diamante upper intake mani, Diamante throttle body, Accel wires pulled. The fuel setup was 440cc Bosch injectors, machined down to fit into the VR4 rails. Too bad the 3SX loop will have to go. Lower intake mani was from a 6g73 Cirrus, with this setup the injector height came out perfect, no extra spacers needed.

Disconnected the cats and muffler, than wrapped it up for today. I will need to drop the rest of the exhaust (really looking forward to it on jackstands), drain the trans and pull the axles, than it's party time.

Dropped the full exhaust a couple days ago. Finally the catback is out, it's an Injen 3" for a 3G Eclipse with modifications.

After that, I pulled the axles. I found that unlike it's suggested in the manual, leaving the BJ connected and disconnecting the hub from the strut is easier. On the other side I even left the caliper and rotor in place, a lot quicker. The service manual calls for special tool, but didn't need it for the tie bar joint either, a punch and a hammer did the trick.

The driver side axle put up a fight on the trans side, so I said forget it. The pass side is easier, bc once you unbolt the two bolts holding the intermediate shaft's bracket to the block, you can use that to tap it out, like suggested in the manual.

And there it goes. Pulling the engine and trans together was not horrible, but definitely tricky on the transmission mount side. I found that taking out all mounts but the pass side, and jacking up the driver side a little bit helps.

Me, I just realized I never even took a decent picture of Titanium Pearl, so I'll be overcompensating. Besides, the dealer sticker on my windshield said: Collectors Edition, so I guess these are classics now :)

This is my new 2003 GTZ in Sterling Silver Metallic, with only 101k miles.
It spent it's entire life in Florida, so no rust whatsoever, and has the cleanest record I've seen so far. It's in really good mechanical shape, even the A/T is super smooth. Drove it straight home without a single issue.

Its is indeed a clean car.



You can tell it got serviced by little things like the wires on the front, the vac line on the fpr and the ziptie on the map sensor. Things like that just happen while handling them. I say its a plus because they did at least plugs and hopefully timing belt.

Started on the interior. Not so long ago I scored a 3g Infinity setup in brand new condition. I really only needed the speakers but in the lot came a hu, 6cd changer and amp - good for spares. Only difference between the 8g and 3g amps are the mounting brackets btw, swap the case and it would be good to go in the Galant. The N810 will be mounted to serve as an mp3 player. I like old Nokia's.

Thanks! Plans for the long run are full Kouki Vr4 conversion again, 5sp and 3.8 with boltons. Right now I want to finish the interior and swap the suspension/wheels/brakes in next.

That's the one thing I don't have. All 3g/8g's seem to blow those first (than the front speakers), and I don't even want to replace it as I believe it contributes to cracks in the dashboard. With that said the EVO X and some Endeavors are running a 2 Ohm system as well, that's where I would look for better replacements.

Interior swap done, jdm mirrors done. The inside cleaned up nicely. Suspension swap also done. Installed the BAERs again as well, the BREMBOs will be probably the last thing on the list. Took the car to my favorite HONDA dealership for an alignment and brake fluid flush, man it feels great to be lowered again!

Found a manual 02 Lancer. I knew that the EVO sw swap is plug and play on Lancers of the same gen, so I pulled the clockspring too but left it there as they wanted too much for it. Took the pigtail tho. As I was cleaning the parts at home, I got suspicious: tested the pigtail with my '01 Galant clockspring and it went right in... hmm.

This is what I get for not doing my homework: turns out that while all Lancer clocksprings have the same connector on the air bag side, the other side changed in 2002 May:

SO if your Galant was built before 2002 May, and you want to use the EVO8/9 steering wheel, get the pre 2002 May Lancer clockspring. It's not only pnp, but you can keep the cruise control too if you want to. Part number MR301706, yellow clip.

If your Galant was built after 2002 May, use the EVO/Lancer clockspring from 2002 May up and it will be pnp. No cruise control, but it's easy to find even on ebay for dirt cheap. MR583930, green clip.

In case someone also wondered if you can use the Lancer/EVO steering column so no welding would be involved, it's a no go. Lancer column on top (too short), Galant on bottom. The combo switches seem to be physically interchangeable.

Rotors are directional. Not all of them can be installed the same orientation as he installed them. It is all depending on the production of the rotors.

Since my last post, I've been pulling apart '02 and boxing up things. Beauty of this process is that I really come to learn these cars inside-out: at this point I took apart every single thing - twice.

Almost forgot about the flywheel before putting my first engine away. Figured I take it off after work one night as a quick 15 minute thing. Turned into a 2 hour project as I had to dremel down one of the flywheel bolts, gotta love it.

I needed to do something different, and as I'm big on recycling, I decided to gut both my broken USDM and JDM heads. All of them pretty much broke in the same places: mounting tabs and the corners, but the lenses/bezels stayed intact, so I wanted to save them.

I figured why not do the new heads as well, I already have the tools out. Sealed them back with Hondabond and loaded them up with Silverstars. I like the Hondabond bc it seals perfectly and holds strong, but with heat it's workable again.

Took a little time off and actually decided to relax, but then it was time to jump right back to it. I really want the '02 gone by September, so focused on that today.

First thing first, I still had the gas in there: used the factory pump to get rid of it. I never realized before how usefull the factory tire wrench is, I use it all over the place and it's the perfect tool to remove the fuel pump assembly without damaging the ring.

Dropped the rear brake assembly for someone doing the disc conversion. That's all to it, looks like a super simple swap for you guys with drums.

Scored a pair of Koito JDM 3rd gens with harnesses. I still have the wiring harness I built for my old ESDEPOs so I could switch it. That way they'd lit up just like the USDM and I could use both white sections as reverse. I ended up liking the JDM way, so just wired it as intended. I missed that behind, still needs a bumper tho.

Also Make sure that secure those fog lights cause when i bought my bumper kit the fog lights did not have have not housing to install them. Had to take a metal wire to connect them to the fog lights and install them to the chassis.

mines fell off and i drove over them and damaged them had to buy a new pairs that costed me like 70 dollars used and Quite cheap here in the middle east in Jordan for JDM PARTS Evo parts to the ass and the front bumper I bought was less than 183. Dollars hope you got a good bargain on yours.

I've had to make brackets for all the JDM fronts I've done

Well, this is how I'm doing mine, and it always works.

The lower "legs" still clip into the headlights, I just had to widen the holes about 5mm on each side. The middle one could stay, but I just cut it off as it doesn't clip into anything.
The top legs I cut off, flip them and switch them, than glue it to the grill in the right spot so they clip onto the radsupport. I switch them, so you can release them from the sides easily. You also have to trim back the grill in those spots a couple mm first.
The grill is made of ABS, so I get ABS cement from a hardware store for gluing.

EVO 8 sw mounting plate was cut and sent out with a 1G DSM hub to be welded. Apparently not the easiest way of doing this, but kudos to Spdracr for making it work.

This might be the first time I've said this but please keep the pinstripes. Especially if the mirrors are staying black. Car pulls it off so well.

If you can, post your thoughts on the crystal vision h3s in terms of whiteness and brightness. I tried h4 philips white vision briefly in between hids, and they didn't live up to the claims I feel.

Trust me, after the difficulties I've experienced with hids I know what you mean about the convenience and simplicity of halogens. Nice knowing both headlights are gonna turn on for sure and not flicker lol. I ever find a pair I feel are decently bright and white I'll probably never look back towards hids.

I've been using ddmtuning HIDs for years and only once the bulbs blew (one only blew) but that was after few years of using them and I'm still using them till today with zero issues.

As things starting to slow down at work, and even the weather got warm for today, I was thinking this might just be the time to start finishing up the engine. Than on the way home, I get a CEL, and the car starts to slow down... Oh snap, here we go again. Pulled the code on the spot, P0734.

So there's my weekend program: I'll be checking/swapping around the easy parts first: speed sensors, solenoids etc., than if it's still a no go, I guess it's time for the 5sp to go in.

Yepp, that's it. It could mean a lot of things, but in the end I figured it's done for. I had this happen to my '01, I'm fairly confident it's going to be a pump failure just like the last time, but had a tiny hope it's something simple.

I replaced the input & output speed sensors, they checked out. I popped off the cover to pull the solenoids, and they are all good. No big metal shavings in there, but at this point I figured if I have to dig deeper I might as well just do the swap. Some pics for those who need to do a solenoid replacement at one point, or replace the valve body. It's really easy.

I have most of parts I need for the swap, but I do need a new clutch. Back in the day I used to run the Exedy Stage 1 kit. Some people skip it bc they think it's an OEM replacement basically, but it is actually a decent upgrade for just bolt ons.

Stage one pressure plate vs OEM. Having had run both with the same disc, I can state that the Stage 1 does have more clamping force. It also has a "step" on the inner side of the ring which the oem doesn't. Must be for weight savings lol.
The pp has MBC595 stamped on it, after some research it turns out this is Exedy's oem pp for the 2nd gen Mitsubishi RVR 4g63T (1998-2002) known in Europe as the Space Runner. Mitsubishi part# MD771746.

OEM disc vs Stage 1, back in the day. The OEM was 224mm OD iirc, the Stage one is 237mm. It is in reality an OEM Exedy disc, made for the FD RX7. (part# MZD069) Too bad these are not easy to find anymore separate for cheap.

Too bad upon placing the EVO disc onto the PP I realized that it doesnt lay flat on it. The hub hits the forks on the outside of the springs, the EVO disc is just too thick in that spot. I guess the search continues for an inexpensive fullface solution.

I'm open to suggestions! I'm trying to avoid puck style discs, lets say like this one:

Looking for something that can handle some extra power from the 3.8, but will not drive me crazy while in heavy traffic. Reinforced organic sounded good to me. With the kevlar ones I heard it's easy to glaze them.

My setup would have been the Exedy Stage 1 pressure plate with an ACT disc. I just happen to already have an EVO disc from them) but I know they make one for the Eclipse too. I'm just not settled on that as while I know their old discs were Exedy based, my understanding is that the new ones are of a different design. I'd like to maintain a factory style hub. I know, I'm picky :)

The gold tool on my wrench is a factory vac hose clamp. It's ziptied to the wrench so it acts as a spring, keeping the swivel head at a 135 degree angle - almost perfect for the job.

I was considering that, the prices are good too. Do you have a pic of your disc by any chance? I read it somewhere that the center part that sits on the input shaft is not as deep (if that makes any sense) as the exedy ones, which kind of concerns me.

Maybe u can. I know u can buy the disc alone. I just bought a stage 4 disc to upgrade mine since stage 2 thru 5 use the same pressure plate.

For now, I gave in and ordered the correct ACT disc, part # 3000308. On a side-note, man ACT got expensive. I'll see how it works with my Exedy pp and go from there.

Some parts arrived:New axles thanks to Advanced Auto, and Motul for the trans. Used to run Redline MT90 per Sheptrans, but seeing how Wavetrac suggests the Motul, I just went with that this time. At the same time fedex misplaced my Fidanza friction kit for the flywheel, so that slows me down again. I don't have much luck with fidanza it seems like, as they also were no help in getting new flywheel bolts.

In the meantime I figured I clean up my old motor mounts, 2003 will have 1 or 2 blown probably anyways plus the trans mount of course. On my 2001 I used to run Deyeme Racing fr & rr, they look good as new. Than when my engine side went I replaced that with a Prothane insert. I also have the stock 2002 mounts for comparison.

All done: engine side and trans side consist of two halfs, they are easy. The front and rear are a 1 piece design, managed to push it in by hand and a rubber mallet, while feeding the lip in with a flathead. Sidenote: the sleeve for the rr mount has an ID of 12mm, vs the OEM's 10mm, so it will need an extra sleeve. I'm using the Deyeme mounts for now anyways.

Thanks! Wetsanded 300/400/800/1000 than 3M polishing compound, by hand. Normally I would get rid of bigger casting marks with 120 on a dremel, than a 220 by hand first.

The ACT disc arrived. My excitement quickly faded away as I opened the box... yepp, after measuring it, it's a solid 225mm. This should have been a 240mm disc, at least that is how it's advertised everywhere. The old ACT discs used to be built on the MZD069, my suspicion is that they switched to the factory 3G disc to save money. So this one went back to ACT, and I ordered yet another full Exedy Stage 1 set instead.

Resolved another issue: when removing the flywheel I had to drill out one of the bolts. Fidanza was no help in sourcing replacements, but after some digging, found my answer on Club3G. Credit goes to Buddhalawton who has an impressive 75 build over there. I'm sure this info will be useful for others too, as the factory flywheel bolts are too short (fidanza supplies their kit with a set of longer ones).

Talking about Fidanza, Titanmotorsports was nice enough to send me a replacement for my first, lost package, and they made sure my friction plate arrived in time too. Great customer service!

As there wasn't much I could do before emptying the garage, I started to mess with the Lancer shifter panel. Ended up cutting it and molding it into the 8g bezel. It will need to be filled, sanded and painted, but it's not on the top of my list right now, more of a time killer project for lonely nights.

Dropped the transmission. This time I took it out from below while holding up the engine with the hoist. I was a little bit hesitant with not owning an actual transmission jack, but it worked just fine with my trusty alu one. Having a bunch of extra factory jacks came handy too. It looks like it's the TC this time that went bye.

The thing that made me super mad: out all three cars this is the first time I have an axle frozen into the hub (ripped boots don't even surprise me). I had to undo the whole knuckle and the tie rod end was stuck too. Bought a new hub, I guess till the clutch makes it here I'll try to drill/cut/beat this thing up so I can at least have my knuckle back.

I was thinking about that, but decided against it. Reason one, time was pressing and my dealer never has anything in stock. For two, I simply refused to throw more money at it, as I already found more things I want to fix at the same time, and it seems to snowball very fast money-wise. I did get it out - it cost me some drill bits as my dremel couldn't really handle it, so I started to drill holes by the splines, and setting it on fire again randomly to the point where it let go finally. Just need to clean up the knuckle now.

Got the manual trans out from it's cozy corner where it was sitting for the last 2 years and gave it a good clean, than installed the trans mounts.

Put in a new TOB, happened to have one from Comp Clutch handy. I remember reading about someone having a problem getting the release fork shaft out as there's no room to tap it out if it gets stuck. Here's my solution to that.

Wasn't that bad, I do wish the fasteners would have something else instead of the Phillips head, but I guess this is what the design allows. They are definitely one time use only, and fidanza supplies you with a new set with the plate.

On a different note, putting BACK the trans without help or a trans-jack is definetly a no-go.

that's good, a while ago I thought I would do the same to save money but I couldnt bust them loose. The fasteners felt like they where about to strip so I stopped and brought it to a machine shop instead, in the end with the extra machine shop cost it would've been cheaper to buy a new one.

Wow, what a month! But I'm back.

We had a baby, our 3rd one, so things got wild a little bit, especially being on one car. Than my computer decided to self destruct as well, so after years of being casual, I literally went dark - lots of info and pictures yet to be recovered.

However, the progress didn't stop. After trying to muscle the trans back in, I made a quick run to HF, and bought their scissoring trans jack. Best $90 bucks I ever spent, the trans went back in no time.

It's common knowledge but I've never seen pictures of the difference, so here it goes. First pic: my old MT axle with the AT IMS below. Second: AT intermediate shaft (x2) vs the MT, showing the difference between the length.

Sanded down the dr knuckle while at it and repainted it with VHT, than installed my new hub.

On the other side, once I mated the trans to the engine, I got the itch: that engine needed some loving. The previous owner clearly got the 60k service done, but I questioned some of the parts used. Like coolant was leaking by the TB, bc someone decide to ditch the factory spring loaded clamps and used worm-gear ones instead. Undoing a VC bolt, it revealed that they redid the seal, but it was already leaking.
So I pulled the mani, rapinted a valve cover and installed a new gasket set. Ditched the noname wires while in there, and installed factory Sumitomo ones. At least they did Denso PT plugs. Replaced the rad hoses and clamps. Installed my Diamante manifold and TB next. I still need to cut a blockoff plate for the cc canister as it had to be scalped to clear the strutbar. Cleaned up the wiring a little bit, but unlike on my '01, I save the real effort for once I have the 3.8 in there. Filled it up with the Motul, and that's when I discovered the that the dr axle is not sealing properly. The snapring had to be replaced, and it was good to go.

Car is running and shifts perfect, I just need to finish wiring the VSS and align the front again. It is so nice to drive a manual again, I really missed it. I have to say running around with no hood on and seeing people's faces was also priceless :) Of course it's back on the car now.

After a week of driving around with a GPS I got tired of looking at my non moving speedometer needle, and decided to dive into some wiring
diagrams / FSMs .

For those not aware, the problem is this:
All '02+ A/T cars have an Input Speed Sensor and an Output Speed Sensor, while all pre '02 and all M/T cars have a Vehicle Speed Sensor on the trans.
If you swap a M/T into a '02/'03 Galant (or auto Eclipse), without some wiring, you loose the speedo and odo.

Now I'm sure others have overcome this before me, but while it's really simple, I have not seen it posted on the forums so I figured I share:

On ISS/OSS cars, the 2 speed signals go to the ECU, than the ECU sends 1 signal to the gauge & the OBD plug.
On VSS cars, the speed signal from the engine bay goes straight to the cluster & the OBD plug.

In the engine bay, the small grey plug with 3 wires on the AT, goes to the Output Speed Sensor. Cut the plug and wire your VSS pigtal to it like this:

AT harness: / VSS pigtail:
Black -><- Black (ground)
Black/White -><- Black/Blue (power)
Green/Yellow -><- Yellow/Black (signal)

Now again, the ECU doesn't know what to do with this signal, so we'll bypass it in the cabin.
On your harness going to the ECU, cut the following two wires and connect them:
Connector C61 (Green plug), PIN 104 - Green/Yellow wire
Connector C59 (Orange plug), PIN 80 - Yellow/Black wire

Interesting. I suppose your method is probably the more "correct" way to solve the issue versus what I did when I manual swapped my '02 Eclipse.

What I ended up doing was taking power and ground from the input speed sensor pigtail to the speed sensor on the manual trans. Then for the speed signal, I ran a wire from the manual's speed sensor into the interior with the shift cables and tapped it into the wire that runs to the speedometer at the large white connector (C-17)

... for a Defi Tachometer. I truly have mixed feelings about it, but it will probably grow on me. On one end I hate the inyourface/markedto11k/gigantometer, on the other side ever since I installed the EVO steering wheel, I cant see the factory tacho, the wheel covers it perfectly above 2k. Sure, it's not a necessity, but it annoys me big time. The Defi tacho at least is a great unit, matches the rest of my gauges, and I like the oldskoolness of it. If I can find a VSD one day I might switch it up, in the mean time I guess I'm a ricer lol.

The 3M vinyl is pretty forgiving, but that bezel was too "deep". I had to cut small pieces for the inner corners.

Hello again TGC! Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans - so true. With that said, after a long forced break, I'm finally, back at it again. The Galant has been super good to me since the 5sp swap and gave me no issues, so I enjoyed it as it was for a while. I was sitting on a set of brembo calipers that I started to rebuild, it's time to finish it. Scored a pair of drilled Brembo rotors, and decided to try something new for pads. I vote sexiest package for brake pads ever.

One thing that was holding me back from doing the swap was the fact that the factory pistons were cooked in the front calipers completely. I found 40mm pistons but had no luck with the 46mm ones. In case you wonder, the part #s for oem pistons on evo parts websites are wrong. I tried them from awdmotorsports and they looked like pistons for a single pot caliper. Not only that, their customer service is horrible, even known it was their mistake, took a month to get my money back - never shop with them again. So I finally broke down and got stainless pistons from racingbrake. These things are superb. They also had the crosspipes I needed.

Well you know, I've gone through the total loss situation myself, and I learned the hard way that sometimes it's not about the car. A lot of the time it's about you, or your ability to recover and move on from loss. I learned that I'm not good at letting go, so my car is still here. ;)
Unfortunately for me, my wife is an enabler, so I started bringing home one a week until I had five Galants and an eclipse. It's never been my wife I've had to worry about, shes the one finding these things for me. It's my father in law and my landlord. Lol. Just don't give up. Too many of these cars out there to give up.

Decided to go with EVO sized tires (235/45/17), it's definitely an improvement in grip and ride quality. The rear fenders will have to be rolled. The fronts are actually fine but I did cut the lower portion of the fender liner as it was rubbing on hard turns. No issues since, and I like the easier access to the brakes this way. Might put in a splash guard later further towards the bumper. Got a nice poke, but have Vr4 S-Type fender flares on the way to remedy it. Talking about bad luck btw, I bought my wheels in pairs from two different sellers and what do you know, one of them decided not to ship them and gave me the runaround for a week. So now I'm after 2 more BBS wheels and am driving around with the EVO V's in the back, yey, I guess bc racecar... Otherwise the brake conversion is done. I really like the endresult, but now I remember why I went with the Baer bbk back in the day.

More parts came in, started mocking them up. I guess I'll be painting here shortly - paint is also getting thin on the car, might turn into a fall project. I'd love to hear from people who have the kit how they went about getting seals for them, as mine are all dried out and cracked of course. I wonder if there's a car here in the States that have a close enough shape to steal it from. Still need a VR4 rear bumper and extensions.

Also made some changes to the interior. Said goodbye to this guy, always hated it anyways. At one point later I might have one back in the carr. It actually looks like it can not be obtained from my usual mitsu parts source anymore. Anybody using an aftermarket carpet? Fun fact: this monster weighted 14.2 lbs.

Also pulled my driver seat and replaced it with this one. It was in the car when I bought it actually, but at that time I just put in my full '01 interior. It's a manual, SRS, leather seat. I never seen one before, and suspecting it's a dealer Frankenstein creation, someone please let me know if these exist in the wild. I finally got tired of the electric seat and while it's no proper sport seat, it is lighter by 10.5lbs. So in the end, good day to loose 25 lbs :)

Well, so much for "next week". Took me exactly 2 months to sort out the rear wheels. I bought 2+2 from two separate sellers and the second seller bailed on me. Than I bought an other pair, and instead of good wheels I got two that were not only curbed but also bent. With the money recovered and lesson learned, bought the last one from TAE in Tampa, and the wheel made it here faster than Irma with no surprises.

Had to take a picture of the last one as I rarely see the IX BBS in this finish, almost felt bad about repainting it.

Good thing in the bad, I learned a lot about wheel repair in the process. Big thanks to my local Kwicksilver: they can straighten a wheel as long as the damage is not on the face, and did a really good job refinishing them. They worked fast, extremely professional and friendly, and reasonably priced.

Since I wanted to roll the fenders slightly, bought an ebay fender roller. It works great, as long as you are willing to modify it. The arm is too long for anything lowered. I took it apart and cut off about an inch from both parts, just right above where the black adjusting knob screws in. Can't beat it for $40 bucks.

base on my experience, you can perfectly line up the rear flares especially when your fenders was already rolled and put your side skirt, too.

I remember reading long time ago when Cali was making these that the montero seals worked with the fender flares. I have a set of Cf ones that I want to install and been meaning to look up the seals for them

After sitting on this engine for years, decided it's time to pull it out of the corner of the garage. I kind of want to find a beater before I pull the engine from '03, but in the meantime I'll get it ready and finish what I started 7 years ago - not kidding. This 3.8 came out of a 2005 Galant GTS with 55k miles on it. Back in the day I ripped it apart, cleaned it up, repainted the block and such. Inside looked great. Bolted the heads back, new gasket, bolts etc., and it's been sitting on the stand ever since. Still going to be a slow process, but I also have a slightly different goal with this build: I have a 6 years old now, who has gasoline in his blood: it's a shared project. If I show him a part, he can now locate it in the FSM and tell me the torque specs for the the bolts. So nothing that hasn't been done before, but lot's of pics as usual.

The other end of my favorite tool is a crank pulley holder tool btw :) Just for fun I weighted both the 72 and 75 pulleys and there is a 1lb difference. Makes me think while not a whopping weight saving that you would get from an aluminum pulley, but this is also dampened, so it could be a basic upgrade for a 6g72.

Retained the 75 lower timing cover - the ps belt is running right across the timing marks now, so I chopped it off and patched the hole with an aluminum plate. I might grab a 74 cover if I make it to the yard any time soon. Also used the 72 side mount engine bracket.

Started to play with the lower mani setup - I think I have too many of these laying around. From the top to the bottom: stock 75 setup, 6g73 lower with Diamante rails, 3sx loop, 440cc bosch injectors (my old 72 setup), stock 72 setup and new 74 lower on the left. Goal is to get it running on the 75 injectors than maybe switch to 440cc wrx ones. For now mounted the injectors, rails, an fittings - waiting for a new loop. Sidenote: the felpro o-rings that came with my gasket kit are junk imho, rather surprising as I always use felpro on just about everything and they were always good quality so far. Sticking with factory o-rings this time.

8g crank sprocket/trigger wheel/sensor from the 2002. Will use the 8g dizzy as well, but wouldn't mind utilizing the 9g COP setup down the road - need to research.

You will need the Montero ECM/PCM and overlay three wires for the use of the COP. Tractix 2.0 for tuning.

Are you running no crash beam? I trimmed mine to make the bumper fit and I still never replaced it after I went with the vr4. Still half the thickness as the original one!

No crashbar atm, honestly didn't even try to make it work - after two accidents, I consider them useless paperweights, especially on lowered cars. I really loved the Vr4 rear as well, especially because of how it flared out on the bottom, but I always thought that none of the factory rears go low enough anyways compared to the rest of the car with decent sideskirts -if that makes any sense - something I plan on overcoming on this one with a custom lip. My ultimate favorite is the old erebuni / cyber rear like what Censee has, maybe because the design is really borrowed form the EVO V - but I could never get myself to buy a fiberglass bumper.

So is the difference between the normal international verison rear bumper and the vr4 rear bumper, is the lower part where the vr4 stuck out a little more and needs the extension to go all the way towards the rear wheels? looks like if I'm not getting the side skirts, it'll be kinda awkward to do the vr4 rear, and vrg is the way to go...... (correct me if I'm wrong :) )

Yes, you pretty much got it right. The Vr4 rear flares out on the bottom, and on the sides it's wider to flow with the rear extensions. It also has more depth to it. I agree, If you are not going to do sideskirts, I'd stay with the VrG rear. It also has those vents kinda of like the usdm rear but more pronounced, and of course a nicer exhaust exit. Never seem to have enough time to go as fast as I'd like to, but made some more progress before the engine goes in: for one, moved the battery to the trunk. Now I know probably like a million people have done this before me, but I never seen proper pics how to run it in a Galant, so here goes my contribution.

Instead of buying a full kit, I pieced mine together. For a box I used a Moroso one, if it's good enough for the NHRA & SCCA it's good enough for me. For cables, I actually raided 3 BMW's in a yard some years ago. Old E30's have a trunk setup form the factory, and pulled some extra from some 525's that had it under the rear seat, as I knew one cable is not going to be long enough for the G. Reason I went this way is they are quality, cheap, and have some great OEM accessories coming with them. They are also a 2/0 cable in typical BMW overkill fashion. The pile:

Also grabbed the BMW junction boxes. For building the cables to my needs, went with Fusion lugs. They are ready to solder out of the box with a propane torch. For the battery side fuse, using a Stinger Marine grade breaker.

Drilled a hole behind the factory bulkhead by the driver side footwell, and used a crossmember bushing as a grommet, perfect fitment. Than ran it to the front through the factory opening behind the headlight. Disassembled the factory fuse, well, ended up drilling it apart. I wanted to keep the factory fuse and wires, and since the E30 cable has a battery post end to it, I just flipped the Galant's connector. Just need to find a nice cover for it, otherwise done.

I have the xml for 80930005 along with the corresponding ROM. Edited that to at least do some comparisons but certainly things are off as load, rpm shows wrong in some tables. I was also wondering if anyone knows where the 80930005 came from, as I couldn't find it referenced in any service bulletins. 80930006 is the only ROM ID I see associated with the 03 GTZ ECU (MR578712)

I know, not a lot of us messing with things like this anymore - I could ask someone write the def file, but was hoping one of us would have it already and I could start messing with it. With that said, I figured out all my Fuel, Air and Timing maps along with most of the Idle related ones, but still have some things to find, like the limiters.

I have most of the 4cyl ones but I don't believe I have saved any of the v6 ones.

Only thing left is to figure out the periphery bits so I can get rid of the auto transmission codes. I'm also looking for a GTS ROM as I need the #482 MAF settings from it. Used to have it back in the day, but my old laptop is paperweight right now, and most old links are down.

I guess I should re-register on Club3G, I haven't been there for years so my account is locked lol.

Got wrapped up with work for the last several weeks, not to mention the related drama ahhh. (Anybody hiring?) Anyways, finally made some progress.

Got a new fuel pump to replace my EVO IX pump. I'm pretty sure it would be plenty enough, but found an EVO X pump for a deal I couldn't pass - even better output and perfect fitment.

The 3.8 is in. After years of doing this I finally figured out what is the easiest way to put the drivetrain back in lol. Lower engine in (with no AC or alternator). Slide in trans from side. Mate them. Lift in place. Hmmm, kind of like how the factory did it... haha. It seems I also tend to forget about parts that I own and have stashed away after all these years - for example I realized that I have a 75 alternator (110amp) already - so switched back to the 75 engine mount and ac bracket and it was all good to go.

Still some ways from done, but starting to look like a car again.

Haven't been this excited in a looong time, really looking forward to tomorrow.Do you better pictures comparing the evo x pump to the stock one? What filter does the X uses? Fitting the evo8/9 pump is a pain in the behind since it's slightly taller and doesn't use our half circle style filter.
