Could be a blown head gasket or tons of other things https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif

yeah i have the same problem my friend just replaced the valve cover gasket, distributor o-ring, distributor cap -n- rotor and the spark plugs and now it just smokes when i first start it up after it warms up some it stops so i guess it is a gasket for me not sure yet but doesnt smoke like it did before

One thing to check: If you let your engine idle when its warm, and it starts smoking after 5-10 minutes, its most probably the valve stems that need to be replaced.

I'm going to be looking into it tomorrow on my car - I don't know if the head has to come off for seals to be replaced - if anyone has info, please share.

the heads don't have to come off but you will need to keep the valve up with compressed air from a compression tester fitting into the spark plug
hole and keep the combustion chamber filled with air.

Thats an excellent idea! thanks, I'll do just that!

to do the valve stem seals, you have to remove the valve springs. if you take off the retainer (valve keeper) to remove the spring, then the valve falls into the cylinder and unless your piston is all the way up, you can kiss that valve good bye. to prevent the valve from falling down when you remove the valve keeper, you fill the cylinder with air by taking a fitting from a compression tester and attaching a shop air hose to it and if will keep the valve floating so it won't fall in. you do your seals and re-attach the springs and keepers and then you remove the air from the cylinder and it will not fall because the retainer is back on. btw, you must remove the camshaft to do this
btw again, if you don't own a air compressor and are not mechanically enclined, really enclined, do not attempt to do this repair.
How many miles dawg?

i got about 104500 miles and i want to learn all of this shit myself but that WAY too complicated for me so fuck it ill let it burn oil

at that many miles, it's probably your rings anyway.
go to thicker oil and forget about it.

that what i think im gonna do but thanks ne ways

Mine has 155K miles and the rings are fine, I checked the compression and its high and even in all 4 cyl.. 105K miles isn't much at all - if you changed the oil, the rings should be fine.

Also, a friend told me that it would be impossible to put the retainer back on the spring once you take it off because the springs are too strong. is that true? Have you done the valve seals without taking the head off yourself?

thanks

tell your friend to buy some new tools https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif it isn't difficult to push the springs down by yourself AT ALL but should your friend have trouble then he could buy one of the three thousand tools made to compress valve springs to ease intstallation of putting the retainer back on the valve springs. And i have done valve stem seals many times without removing the head on motors such as the cadillac v8 Northstar motor, the GMC 6L big block, the 3800 series II found in basically every car gm makes and on my friends b16 japanese honda block.
Good luck. btw it is possible to have perfectly good compression and still burn oil due to blow by from piston rings. there are seperate rings for compression and oil
