OK guys, alot of you guys have been asking alot of suspension questions. And before I'd probably link u to the Suspension Review Page ('http://pinoyesv6.galants.com/cgi-bin/suspension.htm') but yea with the amount of members we have, that page is looking really hurt. We need more reviews. So this is where u come into play. I need the following Information from u...
[LIST]
Year (1999,2000 etc) Trim Level (DE ES LS GTZ) and Engine (i4 v6) of your car
Type of Springs Coilovers u have on your car
Type of shocks and struts u have, if any
Camber Kit, location brand if u have/needed one
Type of rims u got. brand, model, size, width, offset, all the info u can give me
What kind of tires u have brand model size
Other things like a strut bar, maybe rolled fenders, chassis stiffening kit that u have, pretty much anything u feel has something to do with your suspension
and finally your review. list any problems u have, praise, suggestion, describe the ride quality etc.
[LIST]

if you've had more than one setup, like u had progress one time and lets say u got h&r the second time, list two different review. also yea in the review, lets say u upgtraded your suspension for example "yea the ride quality totally got better when i got new struts" don't f orget to add things like that

Note: All comments and posts not answering the following questions above will be deleted. This thing is serious and i don't want it getting off topic by people asking questions on suspension setups here. Also Please try to follow the format that i had set, makes it easier for me to update the page.

1 more thing, hey craig, hopefully this thread works out better that that one u started, and gives u all the info u need

I have a 1998 ES (4G64)

Spings: Skunk2 coil-over for the Galant 1994-1998

Struts: KYB AGX adjustables for the Galant 1994-1998

STB: Ractive Strut Tower Brace for the Eclipse 1995-1999

Camber: Intrax kit for the rear

Stock rims and tires.... For now

BTW I had to shave the bump-stops down about 3 inches for the coils to fit right an ride nice.

Tokico Performance Struts (rear only)

18 x 7.5 inch Motegi MR7 rims

Kumho 225/40ZR18 tires

=> I NEED some aftermarket struts for the front... the ride is very bouncy and hitting any kind of potholes or bumps makes you wonder whether or not the car is going to survive (but that could be because my car nearly didn't in NY last year with the same setup minus the rear struts, ick.) Cornering is superb, the car literally sticks to the road, even after raising the car back up a couple inches after putting the kit on, and adjustable ride height is splendid and relatively easy to do.

Camber kit: none (yet?)
Stock 14" wheels w/ 185/70-14 tires for now
will upgrade to 17x7 w/ 215/45 or 215/40 next week

Very nice cornering, goes exactly where I want it, with little body roll. Very little dipping on take-off or braking.
Definitly stiffer ride, have to go slower over speed bumps.
I love the new ride! I can't wait to go autocross!

I hope it doesn't get too harsh after upgrading wheels/tires.
Need to upgrade because stock size all-season tires get no grip, can't keep up with new suspention.

Review: Very pleased. Took 12 hours to lower, siezed bolts, had to go out to replace all four blown struts (stock), other minor difficulties. Back tires were way out of camber, but it rode great. Installed STB, was amazed at the improved handling a simple little bar does. Realized the back tires were wearing really fast, installed a camber kit. That trough the alignment right out, was actually afraid to drive it on the interstate. Got it aligned, drives great. I have gotted the Mardi Gras beads hanging from the rear view to swing out to about 45 degrees a couple of times.

I just got the wheels and tires a few months ago. I love them. I got the wheels from Jeg's, and they're awesome. I wasn't sure about the gummetal, but, when I put them on, I loved them. Plus, I haven't seen too many people with the gunmetal. It's cool to be different I guess. I got the tires from Discount Tire Direct. The Paradas work great in the rain...they seem to funnel away all of the water. The whole wheel and tire package ran me about $1250 to my door.

For people who are contemplating KYB - These are going to be stiff even at the softest setting. The Dunlop Sport A2's are very good all around tires and handle extremely well in snow/ice. Definitely not gooey performance tires.

Comments: Of coarse I love that it's lowered, although the Eibach's could be a little lower. I personally did not achieve the ride comfort I was hoping for with the AGX's, although that could be because my driver's-side adjustment dial doesn't turn at all( it's stuck on 2). Ride quality could also be do to the weight of my Alba's?

Review -
Putting these springs on my car was EXACTLY what I was wanting. The front and rear dropped perfectly. The stance looks more agressive. The handeling of the car is so much better now and has a very solid feel. These springs are perfect to keep daily driveability in your car while making it more agressive around the turns.

I had the following on a 2001 ES V6

H&R sport springs
KYB AGX all around
GTZ control arms and stabilizer bars
Eclipse front strut tower bar
Energy Suspension bushing kit - full
Firm front & rear motor mounts

Ride was pretty kidney crushing, but wasn't unbearable. Take a ride in an M3, Evo, or Audi RS 6 and you'll see what I mean...my car rode just a tad softer. It handled great even on my factory tires, but there was absolutely no warning as to when you have reached the limit. Very dangerous for people who wanted to drive my car hard without my experience.

Review: Ride is bouncy, rough and kills your back on highways; extremely noisy. HIGHLY recomend replacing struts with performance shocks. Car handles like its on rails on sharp turns. Extremely controlled and definatly has excellent handling. Amazing stance, despite fact oil pan is 2" off ground. Not for speed bumps and dips. Once again, handles like a dream.

...and since I forgot to write a review

I am more than pleased with the suspension setup I have right now. The KYB's mated with the Progress springs offer and aggressive but not too low stance. The Bridgestone tires have a high grip and they don't wear TOO fast. My roommate has a 94 talon tsi awd, h & r springs, kyb's all the way around and Kuhmo Ecsta Supra tires. I can hang with his ass through the twisties, although on the open i'm smoked. The car handles like a dream and the ride is to be expected from a sporty suspension. Not cadillac like, but when pushed performs very well.

I like the ride a lot. It drives real tight. I like the performance drive and don't find it tight at all. I believe that the original GTZ suspension was much the same. I would like to the set the front shocks a little tighter, but over all I love the ride. The drop was good. A half inch lower would be perfect. I didn't have to redo the camber. Obviously with the rear the tires will wear faster but with 8*8.5 and a 42 offset I was looking at major rub.

I think it works out to about 5 inches lowered when it is down.
All the way up is 1.5-2" below stock.
No camber kit, Can't use it or the wheels won't tuck.
19x8 ADR wheels, don't know the offset, but they work.

The car rides great with about 50psi all the way around. If you turn up the dampening on the shocks it really handles well.
Not to mention, when it is laid out, people love it.

I did measure prior to the install. The rear only went down about .5" but the front went down about 1.2". I hope the settle down some more though. The measurments after install showed both rears the same and both fronts the same, every wheelwell measurment prior to install were all different. So now I know the car isn't leaning at all.

I drove it today for like 80 miles, mostly highway. WTF!!!!!!!!!!! I've missed this for the last five years. It drove mint and I didn't even go for the alignment yet. Set on 2 all around. Its very tight and blows the stock stuff away big time. Bounce is fine, not too much. I really am impressed with this setup, it's like a whole new car.

In regards to the shocks - Overall it rides pretty nice, bumpy, but that what I like, I want to feel the road. There is no more body sway on corners and when braking...it acually rides better than my dads Vette Z06...well, almost https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif When I get back to Chicago, I'm gonna set it on 2 front, 3 back. I would suggest that anyone gets these shocks from www.performancepartsstore.com, talk to jessica and tell her you want the Club3g group buy price of 335 shipped. These are the best

I just had the KYB AGX's installed yesterday and man what a difference compared to stock. Tight on corners, bumps and dips are no longer annoying and even seems to react to my gas pedal a little better at the line (could be my imagination).

This is a helpful thread. I need to replace my rear and want to go with KYB.. how much better is the AYX over the GR-2. I'm only asking cause of the cost difference. Is there a performance problem if I just upgrade the rear?

Ok, new setup I got a week ago. Got the TEIN basic dampers installed and have ridden on them for a bit now to try them out. At first the shop put me too low. Pissed me off cuz I told um how high I wanted it and they just decided to put it lower on their own. I had it slammed with the 19's, tire was tucked and it rubbed a bit. Back was same but didn't rub. Now I have it set at about 1/2"-3/4" about the tire. The new look compared to the Eibach Pro's I had is awesome. Front gap was still too much for me and now I'm happy.

Ok ride...they are brand new and I notice they're a bit stiff, but I'm pretty sure they'll loosen a bit and it'll be better. Our streets are absolutely horrible up here so that makes a difference too. Overall, good reaction off of potholes, cracks, fucked up places in the road. Not too rough, but for some reason making my cd player skip now. Bumps are much better than the Eibach/stock shock setup. Like I said, they react quick and for as low as I have it, and with the 19's its overall not that bad in my opinion. You'll never get a smooth ride with this type of setup unless you spend big $$$$. Like i said, I had the shop do it, so no help on install from me. Oh yeah, I may require a camber kit for the rear. Raising it helped, and I may raise it a tad more, but lookin like its gonna need it. Front is straight though. I plan on postin pics here soon. Wanna get my visor installed and take all new pics for everyone to enjoy. Any questions anyone might have, feel free to PM me and i'll do my best. peace

Not too bouncy, and works fine for now. No major complaints. Seems I've gotten somewhere between 2-3" actually out of this combination when compared to some stock 7Gs around town. Most definitely better than the stock springs I had before.

I have an '01 Galant ES i4

I currently have Intraxx springs and I would like to say that these springs really SUCK. From the very minute I had them installed it was one wild ride. Everyone tells me that my struts are probably blown but I have experienced this bouncy ride right from the very moment they were put in and it has not gotten better or worse over the 1 1/2 yrs i've had them, it's the same exact sucky ride. I originally had stock tires when it was installed now is have 18" chrome and it is still the same. So i'm looking into purchasing something else really soon.

update on my suspension as well

Eibach pro kit on KYB AGX struts. no camber kit, tires dont lose tread quickly enough to need one. front upper and rear lower strut bar. 17x7 wheels with Toyo Proxes T1-S in front and Khumo Ecsta ASX in the rear. handles great, but with quick back and forth manuevering (i.e. driving through cones) there's way too much body roll. i miss the coilovers, but i'm glad i can get over speed bumps. it's less edgy on high speed turns and exhibits more control, but again, way too much body roll.

me too! i just lowered on Friday. have some minor vibrations, still not sure if it's because of the common driveshaft issue or alignment. time (aka tire wear) will tell. ooo i just wanna go driving all the time! haha

simple setup:
Tein S. Tech
KYB GR-2

planning on getting the 3g eclipse strut bar. still waiting until i have more cash so that the ~$50 won't seem like anything since the bar isn't that necessary.

edit: oh yeah, the ride. the ride is very nice, higher quality like. like a bmw or MB. but a teeny bit bouncy on the bigger dips and the aforementioned minor vibration at certain speeds. otherwise its super.

The front springs were difficult to install. The dead coils made the use of cheap compressors impossible. Had to buy hydraulic compressor to finish the job, but was still cheaper than paying a shop to do it. Handles excellent, even with current H-rated 15" tires and factory alloys. Car is exponentially more confident on the freeway... needs more anti-sway though.

Ride was actually pretty good.
But had to replace the Eclipse struts after about a year and a half. I would recommend just putting the extra money in for the galant parts if you have them.
Didn't Rub
Didn't have to roll Fenders
Topped out veeeeeery rarely.

MY CURRENT SET UP

1999 Galant ES
Springs - Tien S-Tech Sports Springs (3G Eclipse GS Application)
Supposed to be
1.8 front (actual was about 2")
1.2 Rear (actual was about 1.3")
Struts - KYB GR2
Shocks - KYB AGX (set to 2)
Rims - 18" Alero Dyno Stars
Tires - Falken 225/40/18ZR
Strut Bar - Freedom Design
Camber - Home Depot Camber Kit - 4 washers per bolt.

http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/6/web/402000-402999/402847_106.jpg

Ride quality decreased with the new rims.
It's noticibly on turns stiffer with Strut bar. (not sure i like it)
Camber was not needed intially, became very noticible later.
Low Profiles tires did not rub.
Had to roll fenders.
Top out veeeery rarely.

Overall
Very agressive drop...i love how it looks.

Definitely firmer and harsher ride with this setup, but body roll is significantly reduced. Handling is greatly improved. The car also looks much better without the huge wheel well gap. It dropped more than the Tein specification. I'd say about 2" in front and 1.7" behind.

No. The brackets that would mount to the Eclipse's firewall will not mount to the Galant's firewall on the account that the Eclipse's engine bay is about 2-3 inches shorter. The brackets on my bar just sit there, it isnt really noticeable. I thought about using a dremel to take them off, but im too lazy to mess with it.

is there any drilling of the firewall involved with the installation of this part?

No. The brackets that would mount to the Eclipse's firewall will not mount to the Galant's firewall on the account that the Eclipse's engine bay is about 2-3 inches shorter. The brackets on my bar just sit there, it isnt really noticeable. I thought about using a dremel to take them off, but im too lazy to mess with it.

stock struts on tein springs are holding up pretty nice dispite driving on nyc streets for 6 months so far. wish my front end could be 1/2"-1" lower. tho i scrape on 10% of driveways already

Suspension Techniques rear swaybar

Energy suspensions full bushing set, including engine mounts

Autocross tires
Crager Soft Black 16X8's with 12mm offset

Avon Tech Ra's 225/50/16's Next season I will hopefully be out with a set of Hoosier A6's in a 255 or a 245

Summer set
Currently mounted on the stockers, will be on 16X7 cragers next year

Hankook RS-2's in a 225/50/16

Winter set
Currently unmounted but will go on the stockers soon

Pirelli PZero Nero M+S's in a 205/55/16

The avons ride like a buckboard but R-comps will do that, they handle great, another common attribute to these tires. The Hankooks are awesome, although they wont last too long, but riding them only in the summer helps. The sidewalls are a bit softer than what I would like them to be, but that keeps the kidneys happy on the road. After being on the Avons and the Hankooks the Pirelli's feel just too soft and unresponsive but that will be similar to any other all season I go with.

The Suspension Technique rear bar is amazing, the car rotates so well and just feels totally neutral. I can kick the breaks, on course, through a turn and get it to sharpen up the corner, its soo much better than how much push I used to get.

I really need some non-drop or minimal drop springs with a really hard rate, I'm talking approx. 400-500 Lbs/in, if someone knows where I could find something like that it would be greatly apprechiated.

get in touch w/ road race engineering (RRE). their suspension guru, john mueller, can help you out... one way to get the springs and drop you want is full coilovers w/ custom spring rate either w/ JIC FLT-A2 (http://www.roadraceengineering.com/jicinfo.htm) or TEIN SS-P (http://autosportstyle.com/shop/mitsubishi-20002005-eclipse-6cyl-incl-4cyl-tein-coilovers-ssp-tein-super-street-dampers-p-40025.html) . you could even call ground control (http://www.ground-control.com/) and get them to make you a set of custom rate adjustable perch springs.

JIC FLT-A2 $2000 installed (top of the line for our platform, used in full race cars)
TEIN SS-P $1500 installed (i have these)
GROUND CONTROL custom rate probably $500 installed (but ur gonna need struts since the high spring rate will turn your OEM to slush)

you might also want to look into chasis bracing from D3 (CSK). i also have this.
and a RRE strut tower brace (i have this too but it is no longer in production and was limited edition to begin w/). if you can't get one i suggest the OEM strut brace for the 3G, the other ones on the market (besides the DCsports [I4 only right now] and CARBING [expensive]) are basically for decoration since they pivot at the mounts.

... and since ur autoXing, u probably need to upgrade your brakes as well, but that's a whole 'nother conversation.

If your spending that much, go with the Jics. I wouldnt buy the SSPs, you cant adjust the rebound seperately from the compression. So you either have high rebound and low compression or the other way around. With the Jics, you can adjust them seperately which is nice. Or if you have DEEP pockets, look into Hot Bits coilovers, they are amazing and of pure race quality.

the compression and rebound on the TEIN SS-P go stiffer and softer together in sync just like the JIC FLT-A2. the difference is the adjusters on the TEIN's are all on top (16 levels) whereas the JIC have them on the bottom for the front and on the top for the rear (15 levels); neither set are independently adjustable for compression/rebound. the main advantage of the JIC's is they are body length adjustable (ala TEIN FLEX [not available for our platform]) so you can raise/lower ur car w/o changing preload and travel. i wasn't aware they make HOT BITS for our platform.

seth98esT
11-10-2006, 11:55 PM
They make Hotbits for 2g, not sure for 3g. But Im sure they could, they do a lot of custom setups too.

And maybe thats what I was thinking of is the preload on the Jics is not affected from rebound and compression adjustments.

I was sort of dabbling with the idea of the jic's but lack of funding is a bitch. I was looking to get something cheap in the way of springs to tide me off until I get the funds for a full jic set. I thought the D3 chassis stiffening kit came with a front stb, that attached to the firewall. As I've previously mentioned I already have a rear sway bar, and the thing actually got away from national trophiest Tim Herron, who has previously driven the car. He was telling me that without it, it should have pushed like a mother through that corner, and that was kind of what he was expecting it to do. I'm just happy that my drivings gotten into the 1 second range behind a national driver. With the 255's next year, if I can pull it off, combined with a 5spd should put me into STI/EVO territory, or at least locally.

the d3 stb is made for a 3g eclipse (if u didn't allready know, the 3g eclipse and 8g galant are built on the same platform and 90% of our suspension parts are swapable), it will not reach the firewall on our 8g's.

6G72gearhead

I didnt think of that, I know the firewall is extended on the eclipse. Would there be any method for ridgedly making an extention bracket of sorts.

it's been thought of but nobody is sure if the 8g firewall is structurally capable of being an anchor point for bracing.

6G72gearhead
11-12-2006, 08:30 PM
It depends on how much the strut towers flex, I might have a solution to figuring this out. But I would mount it to the seem on the firewall that should be a strong point.

My Idea to see how much they flex. drill a piece of sheet metal to fit under one of the bolts on either strut tower. Connect a rod on either side, pvc tubing would work to. then with the smaller rods attatched to the strut towers, connect them with a larger tube that allows the rods to telescope inside of it. Take and secure the larger tube to something that wont allow it to move at all, as any movement of this piece will flaw the results. Now on the small rods mark a ring all the way around where the larger tube starts. then get two markers and secure them on the larger tube with the tip of the marker riding on the small rod, then with a different colored marker, mark a ring where the marker tip rides. Do this on both sides. Then go drive the piss out of it with a full tank of gas and then look at the results.

Think of what I have done as a dampener. With the dampener in its still position, we have marked where the piston shaft is in relation to the outer dampener tube, also we have a marker riding on the piston shaft, marking its up and down traval, we also have a mark where the marker is placed while at rest.

Now we would know how far the strut towers flex, and can then make a more educated discision as to whether or not the firewall can hold up.

Compared to the standard setup, I found the suspension to ride so much smoother.... cornering is a breeze now and stopping distance has decreased.

All an all, the TEIN setup is the best I have come across for the Galant. I used to work for mitsubishi, and most of the other setups I came across were far too hard and the car jumped all over the road.

I'm looking into a camber kit for the car in the coming months, so I'll keep you posted

OEM everything with the exception of:
Megan Racing 3G eclipse front upper strutbar.
eBay rear lower tiebar.
(dry months) Monderra 20" steel/chrome Blackhawk wheels on Nitto NT-555 Z rated tires (225/35ZR20 90W).
(wet months) 5Zigen 18" alloy Super Six wheels on Nitto NT-SN1 winter rated tires (225/40R18 92V).

Worlds better than 100% OEM already. I'm learning to love my 5Zigens over the bigger and heaver Monderras. I'm thinking about switching to 18" alloy wheels all the time on the road and just put the chrome on for shows and such. The NT-555 tires are the coolest tires I've ever had the pleasure to drive on. They stick when you want them to and seem frictionless when you don't.

Next upgrade is either going to be the D3 chassis stiffening kit or Tein Superstreet dampers with the EDFC. Thinking I need to replace my strutbar with the Tein/Carbing one with the master brake cylinder stopper.

Home Depot Rear Camber Kit.

Comments: The ride is really close to factory. I would recomend that you go with KYB struts. I didn't because I had brand new struts installed 4 months before. But cornering is 100x better and stopping distance was reduced 11 feet. I'm happy.

how are the megan coilovers with 19's? do you have enough meat on the tire to hit a pothole and not have to worry too much? I am looking at some 19" TSW's and a megan coilover kit, but i am not 100% sure if that is what i want to do, i wanted to find input about megan coilovers and 19" rims.

Review: The ride was bouncy with the shocks/struts set at 2. I turned them up to 4 front and rear and the ride has smoothed out significantly. The car handles very flat on the street, but can use better brakes, steering and an LSD of course.

Plans:
17x8 Evo Wheels w/ 235/45ZR17s
Evo Brembos front and rear
Evo 8 rack and pinion- The car needs a quicker ratio.

Car rides firm and nice. Slightly stiffer or very close to evolution 9 ride with current settings. Car feels much more neutral than ever.. Acceleration feels slightly improved from take off and shifts.. Car doesnt squat as much.. Torque steer is much more manageable atleast in my situation.. The car does not take bumps very roughly but u will notice the road more.. The car feels more planted during highspeed turns and overall the car feels like a sports car now...

TEIN super street dampers with pillowball upper mounts
INGALLS camber kit in the rear
3G Eclipse OEM front strut tower bar
D3 DESIGN chassis stiffening kit
Addco rear sway bar
225/40 18 Yokohama Parada spec 2 tires

Now I have the same as above except:

I just recently swapped out my Teins for H&R springs with KYB AGX shocks/struts all around. My rear Tein dampers were blown out and one of the front pillowball upper mounts appears to have some play in it. I have the AGX's set to 2 in the front and 4 in the rear. I'm actually very surprised at how much smoother the ride is and yet the handling is still really nice. I also have Sumitomo HTR Z III tires now. As much as I loved how well my Yokohama Parada spec 2's gripped the road, the Sumitomo's grip very well and at the same time have less road noise and are much more comfortable. Both tires are pretty good in the rain.

With the H&R springs, I wish the front dropped just a slight bit more, but I can deal with the slight fender gap considering how comfortable the ride is now.

I got a 1995 galant s, max speed coilover, kyb gr2 struts, 16" ADR wheels, and 50 series tires.
The ride isnt to bad. tight on corners, but bouncy due to blown struts in rear.
I had a buddy with a 94 gs. he had eibach sport springs and koni struts. with 17" enkei wheels. That car rode like a dream. to bad koni struts are so damn expensive. I would deffinately recomend that setup.

1- Those tires are too small for your car
2- Suspension for 06+ Eclipse works for your car iirc

How do you like your setup? Is your ride more bouncy or stiff? Also, how is your handling once you get the STB? Planning to get the same setup for my 02 with 18x8.5 Motegis on 225-40-18 in a few months.

alright. It's just that I heard megans start making a clunking noise after some use and not sure if thats the same from every coilover or? I like the ksport setup and haven't heard much from d2 setups.

Just hoping to hear from people that like or dislike them from their experiences with them.

Isn't there a street series and a pro/racing series for each coilover?
I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to suspension setups.

I think it's why D2's went to the black coating. Not sure if they fixed it through that, though it is true, the purple D2's seem to rust a lot.

Their basicly the same but still a lot of diffrences. U cant compare them to eachother. The only thing they have in common is the "tube" and springs.
If u look at pics they are very much a like

F.ex a friend of mine has D2 on his 200 and its full of rust and he only drives at summer. I drive with my K-Sports all year arround in 2 years without signs of rust :)
The gaskets gave up after 50.000km ++ but thats good quality too last that long
Im guessing the paint job quality is worse on teh D2s

I would recommend getting Teins instead of K-Sport/D2 for every day use since they dont have potholes and such on tracks. Dont know the prices in the US but i can get Teins from U.K for almost the same price as K-Sport/D2 in Norway :)
Teins have some coilovers designed for street use so they last longer since they are softer on the softest settings among other things :)
If u live where they have good roads and ur on a track on regular basis they would do just fine :)
Over here it so bad roads on the west coast of Norway so Teins would make things better for me :) Gonna overhaul my set of K-Sports and then sell em and get Tein with EDFC :)

springs:megan racing
struts:kyb gr2

this set up sucks!!! springs are way to soft and the struts are not strong!!so i recommend just going with a full coilover set up like ksport or megan racing.d2 is like a ebay part.my friend bought the d2s and they blew in 6months!!!
