for jdm 8gs, the 'g' in 'vr-g' should stand for 'gdi'. early jdm 8gs can be broadly categorized into vr-g (1800cc), viento (2400cc) and vr-4 (2500cc). after the facelift, 5a/t in 1999 was introduced for viento. viento used to represent better interior and exterior specificaiton.

in 2001, the 1800cc gdi engine was upgraded to 2000cc. 2400cc viento and 2500cc vr4 were also discontinued. now only 2000cc gdi and 2000cc viento are sold in japan. https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif
