I am have checked out the trouble codes for the trans and came up with the following:

40
85
45

the 85 and 45 repeat. I have not been able to find out anything about these codes. I got these codes by checking between pins 12 & 6 for the trans control unit.

By the way, the ecu didn't show any codes.

Any help in finding out what these mean will be greatly appreciated.

buy the service manual of your 1991 galant at the dealer and you see the different codes. i have a 1988 galant so mine might be different.

I finally did get a line on a manual for this car. All of the codes are spelled out for the engine computer as well as the tranny computer. This took care of the main problem. It now shifts normally and runs fine with the exception of no overdrive. When it shifts into overdrive it just drops into neutral. I'm going to open it and take a look at the valve body and make sure all is ok.

i got the dealer replace my overdrive, it cost me $400 but that was 100,000 miles ago and it is still working fine. they replaced the overdrive assembly/kit and replaced the overdrive cover. they cracked the overdrive cover and ATF leaked liked crazy, they covered it under warranty and replaced it with a new one. putting the oil seals of the O/D cover is tricky because if not placed properly, it will leaked and no amount of tightening the cover will prevent it. that is probably why it cracked. it has 190,000 miles already and runs great, pulls and accelerate briskly, too.
