ok i dont kno if this has been brought up before so if it has, im sorry mods, feel free to lock the thread, but could someone tell me the main differences btwn the Galant 5 spds and the Talon/Eclipse/Laser turbo 2wd 5spd trannies? for example does the galant have taller gears? is the galant 5 spd as weak on a modded engine as the automatic trannie? how much HP can each of these trannies safely handle?
thanks in advance

1g/2g trannies are stronger. they have shorter gears i believe and they redline at 7500ish rpm. a 2g tranny will bolt into a galant, not sure if it will bolt onto a 4g64, but we can use 2g trannies with 4g63ts in the galant

I could be wrong, but I'm 99.9% positive the 2g turbo trannies will bolt up to the 4G64.

there is a website that details the swap, but it's on my comp at work.

That's proof enough for me https://www.thegalantcenter.org/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif

Each tranny is designed to handle the stock horsepower for that car so..
4g64 tranny = 140
4g63 tranny = 135
4g63T tranny = 175

(HP is estimated, don't jump on me about it)

You get the idea, all can be stronger with better clutch plates and such. I can't estimate if one is geared higher than the other as I have never driven a M/T Galant. I can tell you that my buddies 1g Talon is geared rather short IMO but the RPM range makes up for it.

A quote from Busher Racing

"I then started a project most people “laughed” at. I was going to build the ultimate DSM, a DSM that would no longer break driveline parts. I back halfed a 1991 Talon, installed a Chevy 12 bolt rear end and a powerglide transmission. The car made a few test runs right before the 1998 Shootout. It has run a best of mid 11’s"

It's faster now...

Talk about a tranny swap
